At the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) we are dedicated to presenting the perspectives of women and supporting points of view rooted in Canada’s rich and culturally diverse communities. NFB producer Annette Clarke, based here in St. John’s, has a distinguished track record of working with women fi lmmakers, and of telling stories that matter to audiences inside and outside our borders.

This year’s large pile of submissions offered us some welcome surprises, such as a remarkably accomplished set of fi lms from Spanish fi lmmakers, around whom we have dedicated one of our evening screenings. Israel continues to produce amazingly challenging material, intellectual and

persistently critical of political impasse. Australia almost always makes us laugh. Scandinavia respects its elders, and so on. The USA continually reminds us that there is more to the screen than Hollywood’s version of reality. And you will certainly notice the sheer strength of the entries from Canada and this province, a sign of the continuing maturation of the industry, national and local, and the emergence of an entirely new generation who have been mentored by the pros. Importantly, the entire program is scaffolded by very fi ne homegrown material.

We sure hope you enjoy as much as you can partake of. All we ask, in keeping with this year’s theme, is that you see and hear – by the sea, right here. Thanks so much for your enthusiasm and support. Now let us entertain you.

We are 22 years old now. The festival marches on, more necessary than ever.

Whenever I am writing up the program notes I think of all the things I want to say in this message. But when I come to actually writing it I see that there is far too much to communicate, and not enough space to put it all in. That said, the main message surely just be: watch as many of the fi lms described in this program as you can. You won’t be sorry. We are once again very proud of the way that the whole program has come together. Consider that our active, hands-on, eyes-on volunteer board of directors watched 468 fi lms this summer. The lousy weather helped, but this was still a daunting task, and at times we didn’t think we would get through them all. At one exhausted point, a new board member forcefully declared to the rest of us that she found it to be a sheer privilege to be exposed to so many outstanding and carefully crafted works of fi lm from all over the globe. That observation, so confi dently asserted, sure reminded us of the truth of the value of this experience. It is always a privilege to be in this position, to hold so much rich material in sight.

It is also a privilege to work with so many committed women who have dedicated so much of their time to watching and then assessing the submissions. There are few labours we love this much. Why else would we bother? For me, the board is a model of how such different women can work and play well together. Consensus always comes after hard discussion and lots of feisty exchanges, not to mention much warmed-over take-out. But ultimately we proudly own the program, sure of our choices, sad to have had to reject many others, and excited about sharing the results with our audiences.

Back for her second year in a row, Roberta Munroe, award-winning fi lmmaker and former Sundance Short Film Programmer, is ready for another round of short fi lm love! Our very own go-to short fi lm expert, author of the best-selling How Not To Make A Short Film: Secrets From A Sundance Programmer, will provide an overview (for the newcomers) on how to properly structure your script, and how to produce, cast and accomplish successful post production of your fi lm.

Returning fi lmmakers will get an even more in-depth look at how and where to submit to fi lm festivals (and where not to submit) and of course you’ll get a complete guide to the wide, wide world of Short Film Distribution. Roberta will also share some of her favourite short fi lms she’s seen over this past year. This is an opportunity not to be missed!

Beat Down

Our festival is proud to open with another thoroughly homegrown feature production, a debut achievement for Deanne Foley whose shorter gems have always found a place on our screens. BEAT DOWN is, not surprisingly, a comedy, a signature move by the St John’s director. Foley has always produced wry and slyly amusing stories about girls growing up, and BEAT DOWN capably extends her favourite theme into a full-blown narrative. Marthe Bernard (Republic of Doyle) plays the unsinkably feisty Fran, a young woman with vague dreams and a restless heart. Dad, known as Whitey, is a former wrestling champ who forbids Fran from entering the ring at any time. As played by the familiar Robb Wells (Trailer Park Boys), Whitey is profane and overbearing and, as one would expect, hilariously emotional. He fervently wants to save Fran from a broken heart and will curse anyone who gets in his way, but a girl gets what a girl wants. BEAT DOWN boasts a fi ne tag team of actors, with Andy Jones, Mark O’Brien, Tony Nappo, and Janet Kidder rounding out the A-Show. The script, penned by Foley and her trusty pal Iain MacLeod, exploits the clichés of the underdog story with fresh attitude. With Pope Productions in her corner Foley is bound to take home the championship belt. Ultimately, what you see on the screen is a legit hit—a knockout with a clean fi nish. Bravo to Foley for giving us such a fi ne main event.

Script consultant and author Dr. Linda Seger joins us for this year’s Women’s Film Festival all the way from Colorado. Since 1981, she has consulted on over 2,000 scripts including over 75 produced feature lms and television projects. Her client list includes TriStar Pictures, Ray Bradbury, William Kelley, Linda Lavin, Suzanne de Passe, Tony Bill, as well as production companies and writers from six continents. Dr. Seger has authored nine books including Making A Good Script Great and The Art of Adaptation: Turning Fact and Fiction into Film. She has turned both of these books into world-renowned seminars, and we are honoured to have her here to deliver them.

Adaptations have long been a mainstay of Hollywood and the television networks and many award-winning lms have been adaptations of novels, plays, or true-life stories. At the centre of this dramatic Israeli film is Hannah, still mourning the loss of her brother who had been killed three decades ago in military service. As must transpire for all Israeli youth, Hannah’s son must eventually answer the call, if reluctantly, to duty. This action generates Hannah’s ritual return to her brother’s grave, a place to which she retreats to grieve all over again, and perhaps to ward off dangers that might befall her son. Deaf, and gripped with a deep sense of loss and anxiety, Hannah turns to dance to help express her feelings. What a piece of work is this! This is a film about the artists who designed the tapestry and the women who sewed it, a 67-meter piece of cloth representing the history of French settlement in Newfoundland. This is a story scarcely known, let alone sewn, a 400-hundred-year-plus history of conquest and culture. This is a project lovingly woven on film by the tenacious filmmakers, Barbara Doran and Jerry Mackintosh, who know a good epic when they see one. PHANTOMS OF THE FRENCH SHORE, in other words, is a gorgeous celebration of a gorgeous fabrication. The documentary also explores the creative source of the cloth, artist Jean-Claude Roy and designer Christian Roy, who in turn were inspired by the famous Bayeux Tapestry of over ten centuries ago. Almost as long and just as important, the Conche Tapestry embroiders a colourful and long neglected narrative into history. But unlike the case of what’s down on the Bayeux, we now have this beautiful film to acknowledge the artists’ dream and the community of women who gave it such a colourful life. Vive le difference!

In effect, with SCENT OF STRAWBERRIES we can walk through the looking glass to appreciate what’s on the other side of the fiction. There we find the facts of identity, memory, and loss. A powerful lesson of both films is the therapeutic power of art. Watching these films might not stop the Middle East conflict but it does help us find a way to understanding it in its most personal and human dimension.

There is no one else on Earth like the formidable Ingrid Veninger, an “authentic new voice in Canadian fi lm,” according to TIFF this year. Slovakian-born and Canadian-raised Veninger is typically found working as

a writer, director, producer, actor, or any combination thereof. She took her fi rst role on screen when she was just 11 years old and had a full-time role on CBC’s For The Record by age 16. She moved from acting to producing in 1989, when she optioned Margaret Atwood’s novel, Cat’s Eye, for the screen. In 1991, she was the Assistant Director for Atom Egoyan’s The Adjuster, and she produced two multi-award-winning documentaries for Peter Mettler, Picture of Light (1994) and Gambling, Gods, and LSD (2002). In 2000, she graduated from Norman Jewison’s Canadian Film Centre.

Operating under the manifesto, “nothing is impossible,” she founded pUNK Films in 2003. pUNK has produced six shorts and fi ve features to date, including MODRA, Veninger’s fi rst solo feature that was selected by the Toronto International Film Festival as one of the best top 10 Canadian fi lms of 2010.

But along came a performer and teacher named Fides Kruker, who, appropriate to her name, brought Kazumi to trust himself by drawing him out and encouraging him to live his dream to sing. Well, you’ve never witnessed anything quite like Kazumi in full melodious freedom, singing, among other tunes, “Tracks Of My Tears” to astonished bystanders. Each performance is simply awesome, a meaningful, inimitable cry of feeling. What dignity he brings to every expression! It’s better to break plates than to play it safe, Kazumi says. Who could argue with that? Music soothes this remarkably likeable man. Be humbled and smile. See this likeable film.

Gutsy Arab-Moslem filmmaker Ibtisam Ma’arana is determined to work for peace. She moves into the heart of Tel Aviv, an unwelcome guest among Jewish Israelis. She intends to film her adjustment, but along the way she falls in love with a nice Jewish boy who has moved to Israel. This good-looking couple blossom in and then struggle with their relationship, the different pressures from their families and the world they are inhabiting being greater than they are. The film is a remarkable slice of life, full of candor and poignant insight. You might think the differences between the couple would be obvious, but what is even more interesting is seeing the pull of attraction. This then becomes a far more subtle expression of the moods and tensions of any evolving relationship, albeit rarely one so tested. If Romeo and Juliet had lived in the Middle East they likely would never have even made the balcony scene. To be sure, there are a lot of balconies in Tel Aviv, platforms from which one can see one’s love coming and going – out of the heavy past and into an uncertain future. We applaud 77 STEPS (the number Ibtisam had to climb in her parents’ apartment) for the honesty of its message and the persistence of its craft.

We adore this film. It perfectly captures a complex cultural reality in a mere quarter of an hour. Effectively shot in real time, the film focusses on a young woman in Tehran who accidentally locks herself out of her apartment—without a head scarf. Compelled to wait for her mother, she is fully exposed on her stoop, vulnerable to hassle and all manner of social reprobation. Does a conversation with a young man who keeps her company help or hinder her situation? There is a brilliant tension here, as we hold our breath, waiting for the wind to pass.

We love its indie vibe, the way it takes its own sweet time with an oddball mother (Veninger) and her vulnerable 18-year-old daughter (Veninger’s own daughter, Hallie Switzer). The two set out for Europe where mom’s film is being showcased at festivals. As with any good journey, it sure isn’t all about the destination. It doesn’t get any more persuasively improv than this, and so we can’t help wondering how much of the cinema really is vérité. We also can’t help but think Veninger made this film just for us—it’s a perfect fit, and now we’re in love.

GRACE is really a testament to the power of education, drawing as it does on the remarkable resolve and native intelligence of this determined little girl. What a piece of work is this! This is a film about the artists who designed the tapestry and the women who sewed it, a 67-meter piece of cloth representing the history of French settlement in Newfoundland. This is a story scarcely known, let alone sewn, a 400-hundred-year-plus history of conquest and culture. This is a project lovingly woven on film by the tenacious filmmakers, Barbara Doran and Jerry Mackintosh, who know a good epic when they see one. PHANTOMS OF THE FRENCH SHORE, in other words, is a gorgeous celebration of a gorgeous fabrication. The documentary also explores the creative source of the cloth, artist Jean-Claude Roy and designer Christian Roy, who in turn were inspired by the famous Bayeux Tapestry of over ten centuries ago. Almost as long and just as important, the Conche Tapestry embroiders a colourful and long neglected narrative into history. But unlike the case of what’s down on the Bayeux, we now have this beautiful film to acknowledge the artists’ dream and the community of women who gave it such a colourful life. Vive le difference!

She is nothing less than a force of nature, a passionate, bold and optimistic woman whose smile can brighten an entire continent. Her determination to educate a new generation to resist the barbarism of cutting is dazzling. It is impossible not to be inspired by her example. This important, at times heart-breaking documentary about sexual trafficking will galvanize you into awareness if nothing else. Bulgarian-born photo-journalist Mimi Chakarova is our new hero, a fearless advocate who dared to inquire into the source, not just the fact, of so much sexual slavery. Her feature film is a must-see not only for what it uncovers and teaches but also for what it accomplishes as a film—in other words, it is a brilliant compilation of interviews with victims and perps, raw, underground footage of dark clubs and alleyways, and of the counties from which so many young women were lured into slavery. Perhaps the most killing irony is that such slavery really took off with the fall of communism. The new so-called free market unleashed a surge of illicit activity in eastern Europe, tacitly endorsed by the authorities in Greece, Turkey, the Emirate, and even by many women themselves. Poverty breeds such atrocious behavior, and therein lies the real culprit. THE PRICE OF SEX paints a complex, sometime hopeless picture, and, yes, it is hard to watch—but one must. Talented siblings John and Marjorie have proudly turned their attention on their remarkable father, Gerald S. Doyle, an extraordinary salesman and Newfoundland patriot. Importantly, Doyle was also something of an early cultural anthropologist, taking his camera all over the province, documenting men, women, and children at work and at play. The footage he left us is nothing less than a brilliant archive of rural Newfoundland, vivid and alive. Of course, Doyle also left us a generous legacy of music, a collection of folk songs that might otherwise have never been known to our fondest musicians. This rich documentary in turn extends the legacy, honouring the man who honoured the people. As loved our fathers, so we love, where once they stood, we stand.
