NRAblog loves to talk to NRA Volunteers, and we try to introduce our readers to as many of these dedicated patriots as possible. During the smallbore prone phase of this year’s National Matches, we were able to chat with three couples.

The Herringtons

Lloyd and Phyllis Herrington, are no strangers to Camp Perry. “She’s been volunteering 11 years, and I just got my 10 year pin this year,” Lloyd told NRAblog. He said they read NRAblog and he believes they may even have been featured here already. When we thanked them for their dedication to the National Matches, this couple said they wouldn’t spend their summer any other way.

“In the 1960s Phyllis competed here at the Matches,” Lloyd said, “then we started raising a family, and here we are now, married 52 years, with great grandchildren.”

Phyllis has been teaching Hunter Education for the past 14 years in the state of Ohio. “She was honored with a Governor’s award for outstanding service, which they rarely give out,” Lloyd told us proudly. “She’s small, so all her guns are cut down in size,” Lloyd said. “Our grandkids all started with her guns.”

The couple, who teach Right To Carry courses in Ohio, typically volunteer for both the pistol and smallbore rifle phases.

It’s hard to believe another year has gone by. The volunteer program changes and grows each year, and this year was no exception. We had a lot of new faces join our ranks, and we lost some long time family members as well.

Our volunteer program continues to grow with the help of online networking like Facebook, and all the NRA programs have benefitted and expanded because of you. But we will never forget those who have come before us, who helped to pave the way.

To all our dedicated and hard working NRA volunteers, past and present, we thank you for keeping the 2nd Ammendment and the shooting sports alive. Best wishes from the entire NRA staff for the upcoming holiday season. •

The Waldrons

Neal Waldron of Springfield, Ohio, knows his face is somewhere in NRAblog’s pictures of the smallbore rifle competition this week. “You’re the only photographer whose picture earned me a compliment,” he joked with NRAblog’s Lindsey Morgan. “My buddy called and said he saw me on the blog, and he said, ‘you were the only one with a huge smile.’”

“I’m like, ‘man, it’s Camp Perry!,’” he said emphatically. “Of course I’m smiling!”

Waldron told us he feels more at home here at the matches than in his own neighborhood. “These people understand me,” he said. His wife Pamela joins him in volunteering for the duration of the National Matches. “We enjoy meeting people from all over the world,” Pamela said. “Some Australians we met a few years ago will be here soon.”

The Waldrons are trapshooters who have never shot competitively. “I think when

the bullet goes off there should be something you can eat,” he said, smiling. His family enjoys hunting deer, grouse, and squirrel. “Squirrel has a wonderful, wonderful taste,” he said. “We eat a lot of them. My grandfather calls ‘em tree rats, but he ate a lot of them, too.”

The Koenigs

Richard and Paula Koenig drive their 29-foot camper all the way from Missouri to help out at the National Rifle and Pistol Matches. “I’ve been an NRA member all my life,” Richard said. He also volunteered with the NRA Bianchi Cup this year, which is much smaller than the National Matches but also much closer to his hometown.

While Richard prefers serving as a Range Safety Office, Paula prefers the air-conditioned indoors.

“It gets hot out here,” Richard explained. “I think Paula’s taking a break this afternoon, but she was working at the NRA Memorabilia Store earlier, and she’ll spend some time in the volunteer office too.” •

“I’m like, ‘man, it’s Camp Perry!,’” he said emphatically. “Of course I’m smiling!”

In 2009 we introduced the new NRA Volunteer online Facebook page, and since then we have gained over 255 friends.

Why do we love Facebook? Because it allows our volunteers to stay in touch and up to date with all things in the volunteer world. Staff loves Facebook because it’s free and allows us to alert you to new opportunities instantly.

We currently have over 2,000 volunteers that help out on a yearly basis with NRA programs. Don’t get left behind, join us on Facebook today!

In the above two examples and most other volunteer duties, no experience or pre-qualifications are required. But at the NRA Airgun Range, only NRA-certified firearms instructors, coaches or range safety officers are allowed to work the firing points. Everyone, especially young people, are encouraged to test fire any number of B-B guns, air rifles and pistols. Needless to say, the range is a busy place, but a lot of fun for the instructors, too!

These and many other assignments are primarily covered by volunteers each year. And because the NRA Annual Meeting moves to a new city each year, we are always in need of new volunteers. We were in Pittsburgh just seven years ago, so hopefully we’ll have some familiar faces join us there. But we’ll need quite a few new volunteers to fulfill the necessary positions. Fortunately, a number of volunteers who have helped in the past found it so enjoyable and satisfying that they travel every year to the new site. And so staff has some “old hands” available to help train new volunteers.

The 2011 NRA Annual Meeting will be held in Pittsburgh on April 27 to May 1 (including setup days). Set up and other preparations for volunteers take place starting on Wednesday. If you are interested in volunteering your time, we would be glad to have your help. The 2010 NRA Annual Meeting in Charlotte, NC was once again a record-setter. As documented many times, volunteers are absolutely essential to many of the NRA’s programs, activities and competitions. And the NRA Annual Meeting is certainly no exception. In fact, without the volunteers the meeting as we know it just couldn’t happen. And this past May, the volunteers were simply outstanding in Charlotte.

The volunteers were asked to do more in Charlotte, and to do it bigger and better than ever before! And those of us who were privileged enough to work with them can attest to the fact that they answered the call. Because of the facility layout and the expected attendance, we needed more volunteers than ever. And did they answer the call! More than 400 volunteers gave the NRA in excess of 4,000 hours of their tireless efforts. It was amazing! And greatly appreciated by all of our NRA staff. Thank you all!

At the Annual Meeting, volunteers assist NRA staff in a wide variety of activities and functions. For example, the member registration area is among the busiest. In addition to enrolling new members, volunteers also assist current members with renewals, membership upgrades, address changes and other membership related matters.

Another very busy location that depends on volunteers is the NRA Store. A large variety of NRA “fraternal”

products are available there for purchase. Many items are unique and specifically designed for the Annual Meeting at the host city and state. Our volunteers keep things running smoothly at the cash registers, bagging merchandise, stocking shelves and otherwise helping the members in every way possible.

The 2010 National Championships have come and gone. It is time to look back and assess past events and use that knowledge to plan for the future. From the Match Director’s perspective 2010 was one of the best years that we’ve experienced.

Conducting the National Championships is a daunting task! Planning and executing the Smallbore National Conventional Championship requires planning, manpower, and logistical support. A lot goes on behind the scenes that most never see from the beginning of the budget process to the end of the Championships and the final reports.

Planning begins early and includes both current and long range planning. Long range planning includes looking at least five years in advance, calendarization of future events, and looking at the available budget monies. Current planning includes prior coordination with the Ohio National Guard, State of Ohio, City of Port Clinton, Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), and other local city and state officials, as well as local vendors that are required to make the National Championships a successful event. Several planning meetings occur during the year to ensure that all of the Camp Perry pieces are in place in time for the opening “First Shot Ceremony.”

Staffing the National Smallbore Championships takes a force of about 100 volunteers and 20 NRA professional staff members. Identification and selection of the

staff begins about seven months prior to the matches. The requirements for housing, stipends and pay, food, training, and supervision, must be set in place months before the start of the Championships. Key staff members must be identified and their roles made clear.

The logistical support begins almost after the final match of the previous year. Awards, targets, shooting frames, housing, administrative supplies, and many other logistical requirements go into the planning process that is almost a

year long. Special match items such as t-shirts, patches, and pins for the competitors and coaches must be ready months before the Championships begin. When each phase (Pistol, Smallbore, and High Power) ends, unused supplies and equipment are returned to the warehouse, inventories are made, and reports are written for future planning.

Without volunteer support the Championships would not be possible. During the matches the volunteers build the ranges, staff the ranges, pick up the shot targets, score targets, post scores, identify awards, clean up after the matches, and do many other tasks necessary for the success of the Championships. We are privileged to have volunteers who give of their time and dedicate it to the competitors and to the National Rifle Association.

This year was one of the best years we’ve experienced. It is time to reflect on the event of the year and to take the time to thank all of our volunteers for a job well done! •

My name is Terrell Tillman and I am currently a Junior and Varsity Football player at North West High School in Maryland. In a couple of years I will be attending college and I would like to major in Computer Engineering. I believe my volunteer service at the National Matches will help me in this endeavor.

I started volunteering at the National Matches during the High Power Rifle phase at the age of 14, this year was my second year as a volunteer. I enjoy volunteering because of the experience I am receiving at a young age. I have met a lot of shooters, staff, and volunteers, and have made a lot of new friends in the process. I am looking forward to continuing as a volunteer next year, and thank the NRA Volunteer Dept. for giving me this great opportunity! •

to see every match in every discipline. How cool is that?

I knew several shooters as they have been junior competitors with me. Some of the coaches I had met before, but some of them were new to me. The shooters, coaches, parents, and other volunteers made the week a great experience, but none of that would have been possible without the wonderful NRA staff members who coordinate the whole match. As volunteers, we simply show up and do what we are asked.

So come springtime next year, I plan to be at the Collegiate Pistol Championships again. Who would want to miss all the fun? If you don’t want to miss out either, call NRA and ask to volunteer. They will find a spot for you.•

You can expect to do anything from help with event set-up and break-down, photograph, take event tickets, sell raffle tickets, and more.

Dear Bianchi Cup Volunteer Staff,

On behalf of Tom Hughes, National Pistol Manager, myself and the entire NRA Competitive Shooting Division, THANK YOU!!! The time and dedication all of you have put into helping run the 2010 MidwayUSA/ NRA Bianchi Cup, is what makes this match run in the professional manner John Bianchi envisioned when he started this match with Ray Chapman, back in 1979. The combined wealth of knowledge all of you bring to the Cup each year is only surpassed by the love you obviously have for the sport of Action Pistol. With people like John Gordon, Pat Cooper, Beth Naumman, the De Krygers, the Heddesheimers and the Koenigs, and all of you, this Match is destined to continue growing, and running smoother, every year. For the past, present and future, thank you! •

I became a volunteer almost ten (10) years ago. As a competitive shooter I made the trip to Camp Perry for pistol week whenever I could. Then one year I hurt my shoulder and had surgery with three pins installed; this put me out of shooting for more than a year. Many of you know the incredible annual feeling you get every year before “Perry”. I had to go, somehow the urge to help out if I could not shoot, caused me to volunteer.

My first year as a line officer was a unique perspective from the “other side”. I also shot and volunteered at Camp Perry until I started to get promotions and moved up in the ranks, preventing my shooting at Camp Perry. Some of my friends continue to wonder why I choose to volunteer when my shoulder is fine now and I can shoot respectable scores. I tell them I get more personal enjoyment out of helping others enjoy the event while participating in the management of the event. This year (2010) I shared duties as CRO (chief range officer) on range 3 and very much enjoyed the staff and competitors. •
