Introduction

ReadaloudFirst Day JittersbyJulieDannebergtoyourstudents.

Afterreading,askstudentstoraisetheirhandsifthebook’sendingsurprisedthem.(Themaincharacterinthestorywastheteacher,notastudent!)Invitethemtosharewhythey,theirclassmates,ortheirteachermayfeelnervousaboutthefirstdayinanewclassroom.Encouragethemtoshareideasofwaystoovercomethisfeeling.

Procedure

1. Invitestudentstositonthefloorwithyouandformacircle.

2.Holdingtheballofyarn,tellstudentsthattheycanchaseawaythefirstdayjittersbygettingtoknoweachotheralittlebetter.Talkaboutmakingnewfriends.

3.Invitestudentstosharetheirnamesandoneinterestingfactaboutthemselves(e.g.,somethingtheylikeorenjoy,aspecialskillortalent,wheretheywentonvacation).

4.Begintheactivitybyintroducingyourselfandsharingsomething.(Forexample,say,“MynameisMrs.Thompson,andIliketoplaytennis.”)Thenholdontothelooseendoftheyarnstringwithonehand.Withtheotherhand,gentlyrollortosstheyarntoastudentacrossthecircle.

5.Thestudentwiththeballofyarncontinuestheexercise,statinghisnameandsharingafactabouthimself.Herollstheballtoanotherstudentwhileholdingontothelooseyarnstring.(Studentsmayneedreminderstoholdontotheyarnstringbeforerollingtheball.)

6.Thegamecontinuesuntileachstudenthassharedhernameandaninterestingfact.

7.Attheendofthegame,pointtothetangledyarnthatconnectseveryoneinthecircleandaskstudents,“Whathavewemade?”Explainthattheclasshasmadeaweb.Say,“Thiswebshowsuswhatourclassroomislike.Eachofusisuniquewithourownspecialinterestsandabilities.Wearealsoconnected,becauseweareallinthesameclassthisyear!”

Guided Practice

1. Printthepuzzlepiecetemplateontowhiteconstructionpaperforeachstudentintheclass.

2.Giveeachstudentapuzzlepieceandprovidemarkersorcrayons.Havestudentswritetheirfirstnamesontheirpieces.(Youcanalsodothisaheadoftime.)

3.Encouragestudentstodecoratetheirpuzzlepieceswithwordsandpicturesaboutthemselves.Youcanalsoprovidestickersinavarietyofthemes(e.g.,sports,animals,cartoons,hobbies)forstudentstouse.

4.Afterstudentsarefinished,cutoutthepiecesandfitthemtogetherasyoustaplethecompletedpuzzleontoabulletinboardtitled“WeAllFitTogether!”or“OurClassIsaPerfectFit!”
