JOURNAL #20 – THE SUN
1. Name one part of the sun.2. Is the sun a solid, liquid or gas?3. How hot was the center of the sun
when it officially became a star?
THE SUN
Objective: Understanding the composition of the sun and phenomena that occurs there.
PARTS OF THE SUN
PARTS OF THE SUN
Chromosphere – layer of the atmosphere above the photosphere
Convection Layer – transports heat by rising currents of hot gas
Corona – largest/hottest layer of the atmosphere (1 million K)
PARTS OF THE SUN
Photosphere – “surface” of the sun; gives off light
Prominence – eruptions on the solar surface
Radiation Layer – energy from fusion in the core moves outward
SOLAR PHENOMENA
Solar Flare – eruption that ejects high energy particles
Solar Wind – hot gases (ionized hydrogen) blow from the corona
Sun Spots – cool, dark areas on the solar surface
THE SUN
Sun produces energy by nuclear fusion
Sun is a gas and rotates at different speeds Equator: 25-27 days Poles: 31-35 days
SYSTEMS OF STARS
Binary System – when two stars orbit each other Our sun IS NOT a binary system
