Driendl is one of Austria’s most respected architects. His buildings show a quality level that is seldom reached. Not only do they withstand a second glance, but they even require it. Catchwords like "wit" and "innovation" might here give an approximate description of his abilities. His buildings feature on the cover and are in the table of contents of trend setting architecture journals such as GA, AD, Abitare, and others.APOPwohnen is a very individual book in which Georg Driendl, in cooperation with specialists, covers the entire range of the topic "living". Like in a theatre play, he divides the topics into acts and gives each actor a second name. An extract: orchid: architecture; bay-leaves: money; oak wood: construction authority. The book offers a monographic overview on Driendl‘s residential buildings and is thus a response to the large international demand. In the same time, the architect arranges an experts’ dialogue filling with life the totality of residential theories.

International Research Handbook on Values Education and Student Wellbeing
EDITORS: TERENCE LOVAT, The University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia; RON TOOMEY, The University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia and NEVILLE CLEMENT, The University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia
ISBN-13: 978-90-481-8674-7PAGES/ILLUS: XXX, 870 p., HardcoverPRICE: approx. $539.00AVAILABLE (US): June 2010
Informed by the most up-to-date research from around the world, as well as examples of good practice, this handbook analyzes values education in the context of a range of school-based measures associated with student wellbeing. These include social, emotional, moral and spiritual growth – elements that seem to be present where intellectual advancement and academic achievement are being maximized. This text comes as ‘values education’ widens in scope from being concerned with morality, ethics, civics and citizenship to a broader definition synonymous with a holistic approach to education in general. This expanded purview is frequently described as pedagogy relating to ‘values’ and ‘wellbeing’.This contemporary understanding of values education, or values and wellbeing pedagogy, fits well with recent neuroscience research. This has shown that notions of cognition, or intellect, are far more intertwined with social and emotional growth than earlier educational paradigms have allowed for. In other words, the best laid plans about the technical aspects of pedagogy are bound to fail unless the growth of the whole person – social, emotional, moral, spiritual and intellectual, is the pedagogical target. Teachers and educationalists will find that this handbook provides evidence, culled from both research and practice, of the beneficial effects of such a ‘values and wellbeing’ pedagogy.
SELLING POINTS: Shows that values education is essential to effective schooling Links the effects of values education to all the important educational measures Shows that values education is a worldwide, contemporary phenomenon Shows that values education fits well with updated brain and pedagogical
research Illustrates that values education is a means to holistic student and teacher

Human activity has resulted in changes to atmospheric chemistry and land cover, and caused serious decline in biodiversity. Modifying biogeochemical cycles leads to complex feedbacks. The future climate will have impact on food security and agriculture, water supply and quality, storm and cyclone frequency, shoreline stability, biodiversity and the future of biological resources. Earth scientists might be asked to forecast any potential abrupt or environmental surprises. A sound knowledge of the Earth System will improve the chances of achieving this, by developing climate models that will reduce the degree of uncertainty in regional climate prediction. This volume sets out a framework of research issues that show how the Earth sciences contribute to a better understanding of climate change and suggests where future research will best contribute to the wellbeing of society.

Although they cover most of the surface of our planet, the oceans are still largely unexplored. Yet they provide some of the only detailed records of conditions on our planet back into the deep past and are arguably going to play a fundamental role, by responding to the atmospheric engineering experiment the human race is presently carrying out, in our future. The volume describes what is known about the Earth´s oceans, from the internal structure of the plates which make up their floors to their role in climate control. It examines their potential for providing living and non-living resources and the threats posed to them by mankind´s activities.

Nearly everything we make or build, and nearly all the energy we use, comes out of the Earth. Modern society is increasingly dependent on mineral and fossil energy sources. They are non-renewable, they differ in their availability, in the cost of production, and in their geographical distribution. Growing demand have begun to restrict the availability of these resources. The Earth is not running out of critical mineral resources - at least for the near future - but the ability to explore for, and produce, those resources is being restricted in many regions by competing land use, as well as political, and environmental issues. Extraction of natural resources requires a clear focus on sustainable development, involving economic, environmental, and social/cultural aspects. Although we do not know what the most important resources will be in 100 years from now, we can be quite certain that society will still need energy and a wide range of raw materials. These resources will include oil and gas, coal, uranium, thorium, geothermal, metallic minerals, specialty and industrial minerals, including cement, raw materials, rare-earth elements, water, both surface and groundwater. A global approach to these and related questions is called for - an approach that, with appropriate international collaboration, could be achieved within the triennium of the International Year. Some global mineral resource assessments, involving inter-governmental collaboration, have already been initiated. The International Year of Planet Earth will help focus attention on how the geosciences can generate prosperity locally and globally, as well as sustainability issues in both developed and developing countries.
SELLING POINTS: The book provides guidelines on how to ascertain whether resource scarcity or
abundance poses a threat to sustainable development It discusses how our improved knowledge of valuable geological resources can help
with better planning, governance, social stability and advancement It examines to what extent geo-methane and methane hydrates can contribute to
global energy production, and what may be the possible environmental impact

This graduate-level textbook presents a detailed exposition of key mathematical tools in analysis, which will appeal to students and professionals across science and engineering. Every topic covered has been specifically chosen because it plays a role outside the field of pure mathematics, so although the treatment of each is mathematical in nature, and concrete applications are not delineated, the principles and tools presented are quite useful when exploring the computational areas of physics and engineering. A central theme of the textbook is the structure of various vector spaces (most importantly, Hilbert spaces) and expansions of elements in these spaces in terms of bases.Readers are expected to have a solid understanding of linear algebra, in Rn and in general vector spaces.

If you have not already heard about solitons, you will sooner or later encounter them. The soliton, a solitary wave impulse preserving its shape and strikingly similar to a particle, is one of the most fascinating and beautiful phenomena in the physics of nonlinear waves. In this engaging book, the concept of the soliton is traced from the beginning of the last century to modern times, with recent applications in biology, oceanography, solid state physics, electronics, elementary particle physics, and cosmology. Indeed, on the descriptive and historical level, only some knowledge of high school physics and mathematics is needed. At a higher level, for understanding the elementary theory of oscillations and waves, the reader can intuit much from the numerous illustrations and perhaps skip the formulas presented. But to appreciate the deep connections in this book between apparently different and diverse phenomena and ideas, the reader must be able to follow elementary mathematical computations.
SELLING POINTS: Main concepts and results of theoretical physics related to solitons can be explained
without using much mathematics Extensive advanced appendices for the more advanced user

Gynecologic specimens are frequently submitted for intraoperative consultation, primarily as a basis for making immediate treatment decisions. The extent and type of surgery often depends on the result of such examinations. Frozen section evaluation is primarily performed to confirm the presence and histologic type of malignancy, as well as to determine the adequacy of resection by examining the surgical margins. Frozen sections are accurate for clinical use during gynecologic surgery, with low false negative rate and lower false positive rate. The accuracy in general surgical practice is reported to vary from 91.5 to 97.4%, but it is lower in mesenchymal tumors, in which mitotic counts are critical, and in ovarian mucinous tumors, in which extensive sampling is often needed. In such instances, it is imperative to defer the diagnosis until additional examination is feasible. Frozen Sections in Gynecologic Pathology will consider the application, indications, contraindications and limitations of frozen sections in gynecologic specimens, as well as the causes of false-positive or false- negative frozen section results. Each organ will be considered separately, since intraoperative consultation plays a different role in each part of the genital tract. Indications on how to handle and gross different specimens will only be considered in as much as it relates to frozen section and gross consultation carried within the frozen section laboratory.

A Passion for the PlanetsEnvisioning Other Worlds, From the Pleistocene to the Age of the Telescope

SoftcoverPRICE: $34.95AVAILABLE (US): April 2010
In this volume, the first of a trilogy, Sheehan starts with observational astronomy’s profound and lasting effect on his own life, setting the points of embarkation for the journey to come. He travels across the historical landscape seeking the earliest origins of man's compulsion to observe the planets among the hunter gatherers of the upper palaeolithic, and traces the evolving story from the planetary records of the earliest cities, to Pharonic Egypt through to Hellenistic Greek astronomy culminating in Ptolemy. The necessity to observe played its part in the perceptual changes wrought by the Copernican revolution, as well as the observational advances achieved by such extraordinary characters as Tycho with his sharpest of eyes, and his luxurious practice of total astronomy. The two epochal advances published in 1609, both born through planetary observation, namely Kepler's discovery of the true nature of the orbit of Mars and Harriot and Galileo’s observations of the Moon, have a pivotal place in this account.
