E-Learning: Strategies for Delivering Knowledge in the Digital Age by Marc J. Rosenberg When e-learning becomes the learning strategy, December 29,2000 Reviewer: Harald Nygaard (see more about me) from Oslo Norway Rosenbergs book is a must for anyone who plans to develop a learning strategy for the corporate world, but applies also to the changing perspective on learning in general. By having you ask yourself many important questions during the pre-planning and planning processes, pitfalls may be avoided. Too often the technology gets the blame when something goes wrong, but often the preparatory work (analysis of culture, purpose etc) has been handled too lightly. Rosenbergs strategically important questions may assist in allieviating these problems. In addition, several "E-learning Journeys", the experiences and reflections of corporate learning executives, are included to add on to the "usabilityu-value of Rosenbergs writings. The book is organized into three parts: Part I The Opportunity - which includes several definitionslclarifications of central concepts and a brief historical overview of e-learning. Part I1 New Approaches for E-Learning - in which CBT, WBT, Knowledge Management, Performance Support etc are presented and combined to meet the needs of a changing learning community. Part III Organizational Requirements for E-Learning - has a very practical approach to planning the cornapny's e-learning strategy, in addition to including very important discussion of success factors as well as why e-learning projects fail. All in all, a book that may be read and read again as projects develop.
E-Moderating: The Key to Teaching andLearning Online (Open and Distance Learning Series) by G i y Salmon For more than distance education ...., August 10, 2000 r Reviewer: Nancy White (see more about me) from Seattle, WA USA Although this book is aimed at those teachinglfacilitating in a distance learning setting, Salmon's advice and approaches are sound and right on target. The last third of the ook, "resources
The Key to,Tcaching and Learning O d C i n ~ . .
for e-moderators," is terrific for many online facilitation settings beyond distance ed, especially distance teams/workgroups, communities of practice etc. Some may find them a bit conservative for more free-wheeling social spaces and virtual communities. But her advice rings very true to me. I particularly enjoyed the case studies and examples sprinkled throughout the book. I foun myself nodding, taking notes and putting stickies in the book - a sign that this is a book I can come back to and use again and again. I plan to reference it in my next online facilitation course! Nancy White
The End of Homework : How Homework Disrupts Families, Overburdens Children, and ~ i r n i i Learning by Etta Kralovec, John Buell Book Description In 1901, homework was legally banned in California. By 1960, assigning homework to our children carried apriority equal to national security. Todav, few auestion the need for home<ork in & e ~ a r i n ~ children for their future. 1 1 How did d i s dr&atic change happen? In this first book to auestion the value of homeworz, Etta Kralovec h d John Buell lead us through the history of the American classroom. They tell stories of students who come home to overworked parents and domestic responsibilities faced with hours of work that can effectively be taught in the school. In assigning massive amounts of homework to students, teachers and schools are essentially abdicating their responsibility to teach. The authors forcefully advocate for protecting the leisure time of children, who need a balance -often missing in today's world -of work and play that allows them to prepare for their futures in work and in citizenship. Most important, they offer a way for schools to accomplish the difficult task of educating our children without the bind of homework.
SCHOOLS THAT
LEARN I Schools That Learn: A F i Discipline Fieldbook for Educators, Parents, and Everyone Who Cares About Education by Peter M. Senge (Editor), Nelda H. Cambron McCabe, Timothy Lucas, Art Kleiner, Janis Dutton, Bryan Smith Book Description Created by bestselling author and MIT Senior lecturer Peter Senge and a team of educators and organizational change leaders, this new addition to the Fifth Discipline Resource Book series offers practical advice for educators, administrators, and parents on how to strengthen and rebuild our schools. Few would argue that schools today are in trouble. The problems are sparking a national debate as educators, school boards, administrators, and parents search for ways to strengthen our school system at all levels, more effectively respond to the rapidly changing world around us, and better educate our children.

Abstract Cooperation Among Universities and
other Educational Institution Dr. Siham AbdulRahman Sawaigh
The purpose of this descriptive study was to shed some light on the concept of a partnership between the university and pre-schools that offer training to the students of early childhood education. The analysis of this partnership, according to theoretical research, was based on 3 major areas: (1) mutual ob- jectives and benefits, (2) communication, and (3) mutual trust that exist be- tween university and schools. The sample consisted of 135 subjects from 5 preschools that offer training to the students of King Saud University. The sample was divided into 2 groups: 59 subjects representing group I (university teachers and their stu- dents), and 76 subjects representing group I1 (teachers and administrators of the preschool). A scale of 60 items, covering the 3 major areas of partnership, was devel- oped to measure the kind of relationship that exists between the university and the preschools. The validity and the reliability of the scale was tested before collecting the data. And the data was analysed by using T-test and one-way analysis of variance. The results revealed a significant difference between the two groups in the areas of mutual objectives and benefits, and mutual trust expressed by group I1 (preschool teachers and administrators)
Study of Breast feeding patterns In Syrian Society Dr. Faiz Qintar
Breast feeding is the focus of interest in many of the recent researchs. How- ever, relatively speaking, only few studies on breast feeding patterns in the Arab world have been published. This study uses data from a previous sur- vey conducted during 1997-1998, which examined current patterns of breast feeding and infant age problems at the time of weaning as noticed in an ur- ban society of Damascus area (Syria). In the study, 331 participant mothers were recruited whose infants were recently weaned. Results showed that the majority of infants were breast fed (95.5%). Where- as 4.6% of them were bottle fed and 20.5% of the mothers used both formu- la and breast to feed their infants, 82% of the children remain breast fed even after the end of their first year of age. The average duration of breast feeding was 14.53 months (+I- 5.11). Supplimentary diet was initiated be- tween 4-7 months. The socio-economic characteristics and the educational level the mother is likely to influence some aspects of breast feeding
Educational Counselling in Lebanese public schools Dr. Azzah Baydoun
This study reads through reports of case studies of 104 elementary and com- plementary students. Each report was presented by a part time educational counselor posted in a Lebanese public (state) elementary or complementary school from one of the six Muhafazats of Lebanon as a part of a more com- prehensive report describing her or his counseling activities for the school year 1998-1999. Data describing relevant students traits, causes of referral and methods of intervention are tabulated and form, together, a basis for in- vestigation into (1) the theoretical frames of reference that govern the coun- seling practices, (2) the sensitivity of both theory and practice towards prob- lems and difficulties encountered and (3) their potential efficiency in dealing with them. The study is concluded by formulating recommendations (that rely on available and limited human and material resources) aiming at im- proving this unprecedented experience in Lebanese public schools.
