Getting Around 出行

On Foot 步行Meandering is one of the best ways of experiencing the capital city. Look LEFT before you cross the road, because cars drive on the right in Beijing.

By Bike 自行车Getting around by bike is convenient and pleasant in Beijing, where there are around 10 million bicycles. Most streets have wide, well-defined bike lanes and bikes can be rented at many hotels and bicycle-renting spots. Bicycle Rental provides dozens of locations for bike renting. Dial 800 810 5917 (8 a.m.–8 p.m.) for details.

By Bus 公共汽车There are more than 24,000 buses running on 750 routes in Beijing, and 40 percent of them are new and cleaner models. Most buses numbered between 1 and 100 operate within the Third Ring Road. Buses with 9 as the first number run between suburban and urban areas.

IC Cards 市政交通一卡通

Smart IC cards (yikatong) can be used to pay for buses, subway rides and some taxis. The cards can be purchased and topped up at some subway stations and bus stations. Travellers must pay a 20 yuan deposit for the card and can put as much as 1,000 yuan on it. The fare is deducted automatically with a simple swipe of the card over a machine.

By Subway 地铁The subway is a good way to avoid traffic jams in Beijing. There are eight lines in operation in Beijing. The subway runs from 5 a.m. to midnight daily. Subway stations are marked by blue signs with a “D” (for ditie, or subway) in a circle. Tickets cost 2 yuan, regardless of destination. IC cards may be used on the subway. Maps showing stations exits are located at the centre of every platform.

By Taxi 出租车There are more than 67,000 taxis in Beijing. All the taxis in Beijing are equipped with meters. Flagfall is 10 yuan (for 3 kilometres) during the day and 11 yuan from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. The cost of

a ride is 2 yuan per kilometre, 3 yuan after 15 kilometres. From 11 p.m. until 5 a.m., the cost of a ride is 2.4 yuan per kilometre and 3.4 yuan after 15 kilometres. Have your destination written down in Chinese. Say ting che to stop. Ask for your receipt by saying fapiao. Look to the rear of the taxi, especially in bicycle lanes, before opening your door to avoid be struck by a cyclist.

Useful Information 常用信息

Internet: Beijing is a very Internet-friendly place for travellers with laptops. Most hotels provide in-room Internet access. Calling: You can make local and long-distance calls from your hotel or any public phone on the street using an IC calling card, available at convenience stores and newsstands. A shenzhouxing card, which can be found at all newsstands, is a good choice for your mobile phone to make local calls. China country code: 0086 Beijing city code: 010 Shanghai city code: 021 Currency & Exchange: The Chinese currency is officially called the yuan, and is also known as renminbi (RMB).The best place to convert your dollars into yuan are at a branch of a major bank, such as Bank of China or HSBC.ATMs: Your best bet for ATMs is the Bank of China, which accepts most foreign cards. HSBC, Citibank and ICBC have lots of branches in Beijing, and accept all major cards with English instructions.Useful to Know

Tipping is not required, and locals simply don't do it. You don't need to tip in restaurants or in taxis.Travellers can easily find restrooms on the street, in office buildings, shopping centres, supermarkets, hotels and restaurants. Some local restrooms do not have toilet paper, so carry packets of tissues and anti-bacterial hand wipes with you.Business cards are a big deal. If possible, have yours printed in English on one side and Chinese on the other (your hotel can often arrange this). Proffer your card with both hands and receive the other person's in the same way.On leaving, you're not allowed to take out any antiques dating to before 1911. Antiques from between 1911 and 1949 must have an official red seal attached. There is no sales tax in China. Hotels charge a 5% tax; bigger, joint-venture hotels also add a 10% to 15% service fee. Some restaurants charge a 10% service fee. Drink only bottled, boiled, or purified water and drinks; don't drink from public fountains. Avoid vegetables and fruits that you haven't washed or peeled yourself.
