Thermal Fly Height Control – How it Works
Maintains consistent spacing between the read/write heads and the recording disk• Improves overall data integrity, drive performance and reliability
Nominal read/write element protrusion before TFC adjustment

Hitachi Breakthrough – IrMnCr Read Head Sensors
IrMnCR has enabled a 2X improvement in precision & sensitivity of the read process
New alloy combination & process• Iridium-manganese-chromium (IrMnCr)
• Dusting of Ruthenium
• Super hot, ultra-high magnetic field oven
Increases hard drive’s ability to read data reliably in extreme conditions• Temperature variance – hot or cold
• Humidity
• Shock
Result: The most reliable hard drive read-sensor technology

Ultrastar A7K1000 – True Server Pedigree
Specifically designed for servers and multi-drive arrays• Mature, tried and tested design with proven field reliability
• Five platter design ensures that we deliver leading edge quality and reliability, not just leading edge capacity – this is very much a traditional server approach
Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) technology • Dramatically reduces the effects of vibration which is always present in multi-drive
arrays
• Optimizes performance and reliability
Designed to outperform and outlast the competition• Benchmark winner
• Top choice for server and controller vendors when they display their products at trade shows
• Tested 1.2 million hours MTBF specification
• Five year warranty

Rotational vibration is a particular characteristic of multi-drive arrays• Can cause a standard hard drive to seriously under-perform as the heads have difficulty tracking
accurately and can even lead to the RAID controller reporting the drive as faulty.
Hitachi’s RVS technology ensures the Ultrastar A7K1000 keeps on performing• G-sensors on the drive monitor any external vibrations and forward a signal to the actuator that
controls the head’s position. The actuator then compensates for the disturbance. In this way, the head is able to ‘ride’ the vibration and stay on track.
