PARISH OF SETMURTHY

The Parish

Setmurthy is the smallest of the nine Binsey Team Parishes and is situated on the south side of the river Derwent. It is a rural area with several farms and an adult education centre (Higham Hall), a few guest houses and Bassenthwaite sailing club. It has a population of approximately 90, a mix of working and retired people, with 44 on the electoral roll.

The Church Building

The first reference to the Church is in 1225. It was rebuilt in 1794 and then restored in 1870 when the tower and belfry were added. In 1903 the baptistry was built. The font is dated 1661 and in the late 1880’s the Misses Hoskins, sisters of the Vicar carved the decorations on the pitch pine panels. There are several attractive stained glass windows, all being memorials to the Fisher family, formerly of Higham Hall. The church is a Grade II listed building.

The Churchyard is surrounded by old yews and has many ancient graves and headstones. Early in the year it is a picture with snowdrops, followed by a carpet of wild daffodils in the Spring.

Worship in the Parish

Services are held on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, Holy Communion from the Book of Common Prayer and a Common Worship Morning Prayer. The average attendance is 16.

Other Information

A short distance away is Setmurthy Parish Hall, formerly the village school which closed in 1934. The PCC meetings are held there, plus Coffee Mornings, Evening Classes and other fundraising and social activities, at which all are assured of a warm welcome.

MONTHLY LETTER

Dear Friends,

As I write this we are enjoying beautiful summer weather, and I for one feel happy and grateful to see the sun. There will be others feeling thankful , perhaps for the chance to get the silage in, or to do those garden jobs which are difficult when everything is wet.

Whether it is sunny or not, this is a time of year for enjoying the occasional day out, visiting or sightseeing, a time perhaps for a few days away from home. It is easy to be thankful when things are going well, perhaps a new job, or a holiday coming up, or meeting up with friends.

But there are times when we feel that things are not going as well for us as they should. We have worked hard, done our very best but we still don’t feel at peace. We take care, but still there are dreadful unexpected surprises. As Christians we believe that God loves us and promises to lead us into the fullness of life. It doesn’t always feel like that!

One way of looking at it is to see our life as a continuing journey; a journey of emotional development and spiritual growth. It’s not automatically the case that we feel fulfilled even if we have a successful business or an Ideal Home. We can’t shut out the problems and wickedness of the world or the challenges and pain we meet in our own lives.

The life‐ journey we are on will open our hearts to things we never expected, and develop qualities in us we never knew we had. There’s a very famous book about this sort of journey, that hasn’t been out of print for over four hundred years, John Bunyan’s ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress. It is one of the most widely read books ever written in English, Perhaps it would be a good summer read? There are many versions of it available these days. There’s even a lovely one for children with pop‐up pictures and a board game; ‘Go with Christian’ by Linda Parry with illustrations by her husband Alan.

As we go on our own journey we can be confident that God is with us at the start and at the end of our travels and ready at all times to guide us if we give Him the chance. That really is something to be thankful for.

For all who want to know more about their faith whether you are already confirmed or are looking at Confirmation. Going and Growing in Faith – this will be for those younger in years. Big Lunch 2013 - thank to everyone who came and supported this event. The children enjoyed the face painting and the treasure hunt and everyone enjoyed the food! Donations of £95 were received for the CFM Cash For Kids appeal.

Christian Aid - thank you to everyone who supported Christian Aid week this year. You helped raise a wonderful £375 for disadvantaged people throughout the world.

Annual Gift Day - this will be on Saturday 7th September and is a chance to contribute towards our work in the area and maintaining the church and churchyard for the whole community. This year we’re having to do repairs to the church tower and we’ve also had to deal with several unstable trees in and around the church and the old church so all contributions will be especially welcome.

The church will be open from 10am-5pm for you to call in, have a chat (and a prayer if you wish) and to leave a donation.

Hands Together Flower Festival - we are holding a joint fund raising event with Torpenhow parish over the weekend of 5/6th October and the Allhallows theme will be “A Countryside Community” depicting rural life and fellowship in our parish.

Parish Room news :

The annual Duck Race held on the 28th May and arranged by Alison and her team, has again proved a great success. Even though it was a rather cold and showery night £259.47 was raised for the Parish Room Refurbishment fund. Thanks to all concerned.

Gardening Club news :

The Plant Sale held on 19th May has so far raised £380

At the meeting held on 11th June the members, greatly assisted by Alan and Mark (AKN Simply Wood of Threapland) made their own window/tool/multi purpose box. It was a busy, fun night and all members went home with the completed article. Many thanks Alan and Mark.

The next meeting of the Gardening Club will be held at 7.00 pm on Tuesday 24th June at High Melbecks, Bassenthwaite - by courtesy of Marlene and Brian - who have kindly invited us to view their gardens North Lakes Foodbank Thank you for the response for food items which con-tinue to come into the Methodist Chapel. There is a box in Sainsbury's now in Cockermouth; also Tesco and Asda are providing boxes as well as some other shops. New Distribution Centres have opened recently at Wigton and Maryport. Since the Welfare changes in April, Foodbank is ex-periencing a big increase in requests for help.

Bassenthwaite Parish Council meeting Thursday 6th June 2013 The PC is now up to it's full complement of nine councillors which is a pleasing situation as the council had been running below complement for well over twelve months.

One parishioner attended the meeting specifically to discuss item 9 on the agenda; Children's Play Area. The suggestion was made that part of the village green could be fenced off and play equipment installed there. This in addition to re-installing equipment on the North side of the beck.

As such a major change to the village green would need support from the whole community no action will be taken until the parish plan questionnaires have been returned and analysed. The parish council do urge everyone to complete and return their questionnaires as this will have a direct bearing on future actions.

The parish room committee are formulating requirements for the updating of the parish room and these will be presented to the council at a future meeting. Watch the notice boards for the agendas.

The beck will not be dredged to remove gravel as the authorities feel that any removal would only result in rapid replacement and not be productive.

A request had been received to purchase part of the Pinfold but the PC were unanimous in not wanting to sell at this time.

The council also voted for an annual charge for parking on PC land where parking is deemed appropriate. The next meeting is 4th July in the parish room at 7:30 pm.

Wedding Belles The churchwardens and PCC of Boltons would like to thank all those who contributed to the success of the Wedding Belles festival. In particular those who donated the initial funds for the event and those who provided and arranged the dresses and christening robes, did the flower arranging, provided and served the food, grew and sold the plants, stewarded the church. So many people contributed in some way and we are pleased to tell you that we raised about £2000. Thanks again to you all.

Report on the Annual General Meeting & Annual Parish Meeting held on Tuesday the 14th of May 2013 in Boltons Primary School, Bolton Low Houses. Cllrs. J Bush, M Grainger, I Ridley, J Bowness, D Oldham, J Havelock, R Benson, M Renwick & A Pitcher were in attendance. Also present were: Cllr Fairbairn (Cumbria County Council) & E Clark (Clerk).

AGM. Cllr Alan Bowness was re-elected Chair and Cllr Malcolm Grainger Vice Chair. Cllr Jenny Bush was re-elected as Boltons representative for the Northern Fells Group. The Receipts and Accounts for 2012/13 were approved and signed. Finance: Receipts - £1760.57, Payments – £1802.51 – which included donations to Boltongate Church for grass cutting & the Northern Fells Group. Correspondence: Cumbria Playing Fields - Affiliation Fees, Great North Air Ambulance - Thank you for Do-nation, Trading Standards – Nominated Neighbour Scheme, Allerdale Borough Council – SHLAA Final Re-port & Police & Crime Plan 2013-2017. IREBY BOWLING CLUB We will commence bowling again in the Globe Hall on September 10th, when we will look forward to seeing all our members for an enjoyable winter of bowling. Just contact either John Chester 016973 71668, or Eva Wilson 016973 43608 for more details A Lakeland Dialect competition was held at Woodlands Hotel in Ireby as part of the Ireby Music

Festival in May. An audience of about 40 enjoyed listening to 15 or so competitors who entertained with a variety of poetry, tales and songs all spoken in the dialect of their areas. There were some wonderful examples and the winner - who picked up a £25 cheque courtesy of the Lakeland Dialect Society - was Jim Parker from Dean, west Cumbria. Louis Green of Ireby won the under 25s section and a game Mark Lee from Torpenhow won the English speakers' class after having a go at reading a piece by Ethel Fisher of Seaton. The Lakeland Dialect Society - (to join, call 016973 71710) - hopes to have another competition next year so, dialect speakers, get practising. Ireby YFC would have been 70 years old this year, so there is a re-union being organised. Friday 27th September at New Stocksman, Syke Road, Wigton CA7 9NS. There will be a meal at 7.30 pm followed by entertainment. No letters will be sent to individuals – so please pass the word around former members and take this as your invitation. PLUMBLAND

Since our last letter for the magazine we have lost a very faithful member of our congregation, Muriel Jean Rudd, aged 97 years. It was only a matter of weeks before moving to Park Lodge she felt unable to go to Church, as, in her words, “the path was very long.” Muriel also had a very long path, coming as a bride to be from South Africa in 1947 to marry Frank whom she met doing war service. Never having seen snow they came to Penrith in one of the worst snowy win-ters, Muriel only having summer clothes to wear. She led a very interesting working life and also found time to be President of the WI for many years, enrolling member of the Mother’s Union and supporting many things in the village. Frank and Muriel had 2 sons, Alan and Duncan. With Duncan and Liz only living a few doors away, as Muriel got older and not quite so independent he walked the track many times a day from No 1 to No 15. This he did with much love, patience and many laughs. A job well done.

Chris Hird and Jenny Wilkinson married at St. Cuthbert’s on a very cold and very wet day in May. George Harrison and Natalie Hillier were married in June on a lovely sunny warm day. Congratulations to both couples. The PCC would like to thank all the people helped and supported the Bothel Sale in June. The sum of £270.75 was raised for Church funds. The next PCC meeting will be held on Thursday 11th July at 7.30pm in the Vicarage CHRISTIAN AID: I would like to thank all the people who collected the Christian Aid envelopes in Blennerhasset, Bothel, Torpenhow and Whitrigg. Bothel Gardening Club was entertained this month by Kevin Preston talking on Sweet Peas. Kevin showed his dedication to the subject when he told us he spent 5 – 6 hours a day working on the plants. He sows 5000 seeds; plants out 1200 once they have

grown, then nurtures them to show standard. He sows 22 different varieties and need up to fifteen perfect ones of twelve of the varieties to put in the shows. Last year’s wet weather meant that he did not have enough stems reaching his high standard required to enter any show, but the previous year he was the National Champion. He is hoping the weather is kinder this year and he can show again. He brought for the club members to buy a selection of his sweet peas and a variety of perennials to tempt members. Norman Brayton thanked Kevin and his wife, who ran the computer programme, for a fascinating talk. The Summer Show is on Sunday 14th July. Schedules have been distributed Blennerhasset & Baggrow Village Hall Summer Fair – July 20th 11am – 5pm Planning is well underway for the Summer Fair on July 20th and we are still looking for prizes for the raffle & tombola as well as willing volunteers to help with events on the day.

There will be a host of fun things to do for all the family throughout the day including a Dog & Pet Show on the Village Green & a Duck Race on the River. Activities on the Sports Field will range from a family three-legged race to egg & spoon; welly wanging to an inter-village tug of war. The Cricket Club are organising a Kwik Cricket tournament for under 11’s. There will also be a walking treasure hunt around the village and a chance to test your knowledge of the village with a village quiz.

Tea & light refreshments will be served in the Cricket Pavilion & there will be a Produce & Craft Show in the Village Hall as well as Tombola & Raffle.

Torpenhow Brownies

Thank you to all who have supported the Brownies in their endeavours to raise funds for the Shelterbox appeal. They have raised £600 which is enough to buy one Shelterbox and as this magazine goes to press they are part of the way to purchasing a second box, any more donations gratefully received.

There will be some places available in September for any girls aged 7 to 10 who would like to join 1st Torpenhow Brownies. We meet on Tuesday evenings from 6.00 to 7.30pm in Torpenhow Village Hall and the girls enjoy games, crafts and lots of other activities. During the last few months they have per-formed short plays for their parents and for the congregation during the St Michael's Family Service and have raised money for the ShelterBox charity. They also join with other Brownie units in the area for events such as Brownie Revels and Thinking Day. Summary of the Annual Meeting held on 14th May, 2013 - Village Hall, Bothel Present: Cllrs. S. Austin, P. Bunting, G. Bowe, M. Story, N. Todhunter, R. Watson, J. Mounsey, Allerdale Borough Council, A. Bowness, Cumbria County Council, 1 parishioner.

Matters discussed included: Cllr. Story and Cllr. Todhunter were re-elected Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively for the ensuing year. Cllr. Todhunter will also continue to Chair the Community Fund Sub Committee. Vacancies: There are two vacancies on the parish council anyone interested in applying to join the parish council should contact the clerk or any parish councillor. Bus Shelters: The two bus shelters recently refurbished in Bothel require re-painting anyone interested in submitting a quotation for the work or would like to discuss this further should contact any parish councillor. Planning: Application received - 2/2013/0244 - Bothel Village Hall, Bothel - New re-placement village hall with associated parking and amenity areas. Pinfold Green: It was agreed that the parish council should continue with the Village Green application but as the process is quite lengthy and complex a separate meeting will be held to discuss this in more detail. Donation: £200 was granted to the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

NORTHERN FELLS GROUP YOUTH INITIATIVE SUMMER ACTIVITIES PROGRAMME 2013 Watch out for the Northern Fells Summer Activities Programme 2013...... It will be on the Northern Fells website and distrib-uted to the local primary schools from approximately the 21st of June. There are lots of new activities such as ‘Bushcraft/Survival skills’, a day of Ghyll Scrambling and canoe rafting, ‘Decoupage’ and ‘Customise your own t-shirt’ as well as many of the old favourites like tennis, cricket and football coaching, sailing and pony riding plus many more. PLUS the creations made in the ‘Felt Pictures’, ‘Felt Jewellery’ and ‘Animals from textiles’ activities can be entered into the Hesket Newmarket Agricultural Show. The activities run from the 24th of July to the 30th of August and are open to 6 to 16 year olds living in the Northern Fells Group Parishes. Bookings will only be accepted on a signed booking and consent form which will be available on the website and on request from the local primary schools. FREE DOG MICROCHIPPING at MILLHOUSE VILLAGE HALL on THURSDAY 18th JULY 1pm - 4pm Dog owners can have their pets’ microchipped for free to help reduce the number of unidentified stray dogs in the district. Eden District Council and the Dogs Trust are working together to help insure as many dogs as possible are microchipped before the governments compulsory dog microchipping legislation comes into force in April 2016. Having your dog microchipped means you are acting responsibly and helps ensure that your pet is easily identifiable if it goes missing. Microchipping does not hurt your dog, no anaesthetic is required and the procedure should cause no more discomfort to your dog than a standard vaccination. Everyone is in for a treat with a good variety of pictures – wild animals, in-sects, flowers, landscapes, birds. Over 250 entries and standards were high. were joined by past members and friends on a visit to Wordsworth House in Cockermouth. Despite living in the county all their lives, some members were making their first visit to this worthwhile tourist attraction!

We were given an introduction to the house, telling us of its history and its residents, and then were able to explore the house and gain further knowledge from the helpful guides around the rooms. The food on the dining table, though perhaps not that appetising showed how the residents dined in Wordsworth’s time. The sun shone for the exploring of the garden and spotting the toys hidden for the children to find! The Wednesday July 3rd meeting at Bothel Village Hall is Barry Kirkbride telling the story of “the last two to hang”. Visitors welcome £2

Plumbland WI 5 members from Crosby joined us in June when we heard a very interesting talk by Penny Dutton on ‘Being a dogsbody,’ not a talk as a few of us thought it would be being able to do any kind of job, but acutely being a dogsbody, which means going into the hills, bogs, screes, woods, getting in a bivvy bag which covered the whole body and waiting there until the search dogs found them. This can happen any time of day or night, summer or winter. A very rewarding job! Penny works for Keswick Mountain Rescue Search Dogs. Gilda won the competition, a small dog ornament, with Helen sec-ond.

Ireby WI Sixteen members and seven visitors had a very pleasant visit to the Pot Place, despite various road closures. The evening began with an interesting talk from the owner about how the place stated up as a pot and garden ornament manufacturing establishment which then changed to a place selling high quality pots which were manufactured elsewhere in the world. He then described the various types of plant pots and gave us tips about how to avoid frost damage to them, how to protect the roots of potted plants and how to make it easier to move plants from pot to pot. After this informative talk, we had a lovely meal followed by a browse round the plants and pots which were for sale. Everyone enjoyed the evening immensely, and our thanks go to the programme secretary, Pauline Bibby Uldale WI Unfortunately, our June outing to Hutton in the Forest had to be cancelled. However, ten members met as usual at Mae’s Tearooms. After a short business meeting we had a Beetle Drive, which was won by Anne Robinson, followed by a quiz, which was won by a team consisting of Angela Marrs, Mary Ritson and Doreen Gleed. We then ended the evening with a welcome cup of tea, homemade biscuits and a good chat.

Method:First take the holy book and blend until smooth and thick. Turn the hob onto number 5 and add the rites of passage.

After melted, pour the holy book in and stir until a bright yellow colour. Grease the tin with some place of worship and

sprinkle the followers so the cake doesn’t stick to the tin. Next, beat the beliefs and then grate in 10 teachers or

leaders. You can do both if you like. It makes the cake tastier! After beat into a thick (ish), creamy mixture, pour into

the pan. Mix with wooden spoon and pour into the cake tin. Put in the Oven at 160oc for approximately 1 hour.

Take out of the oven when ready and add 5 table spoons of festivals. This brings out the joy and happiness of the cake.

Grate the way of life on top so it can melt on. Take the cake out of the tin and put onto a beautiful plate and wait for it

to cool. By now the way of life should have melted. Finally, put a few religious symbols on top for presentation and pour

out some power into a glass. As you cut through the cake, religious things should come bursting out.

Enjoy your cake with friends and family as you sip a glass of power. By the end of the day you will be full of belief,

power and all sorts of religious things! Enjoy!

SCHOOLS NEWS Bassentwaite School Pupils from Bassethwaite School had a great day out at the Beamish Open Air

Museum this week……

Bassenthwaite School Detective’s Solve Murder Mystery! Young detectives from Bassenthwaite School have solved the murder mystery that was perplexing police in Beamish Town. Mystery surrounding the brutal murder of a train passenger has been spectacularly solved by new special investigators working for Beamish Police. Beamish Police had nothing but praise for the young Bassenthwaite Detectives: they identified the victim and the murderer and were even to identify their addresses.

Beamish Report By Pinja Year 5 On Tuesday 11th June we went to Beamish. We went into Victorian houses and the farm. We bought sweets from the sweet shop. We went on Victorian buses and trams. We went down a coal mine to see how they got the coal. We did a murder mystery. We looked at Victorian bedrooms. We had a fantastic day.

Beamish Report By Zak Fell Year 2 First we got onto a bus at school then we had a two hour drive to get to Beamish. After that we got onto a tram and we went to the town, and we went into some shops like a clothes shop and a car shop and a sweet shop. Next we had our lunch and then we went to a few houses. After that we went into a dentist. Next we got onto a bus and went to the farm. We went up a steep hill and we saw some toilets, not like our toilets today, but just a hole in the floor. We saw some very old farm machinery and lots of it. Then we saw some horses then we crossed a very busy road and looked at the farmhouse. Then we went back to the start and we went into the gift shop then went home.

Ireby CE School: A cricket coach has been working with children in Year 5 & 6. The children will then be taking part in a cricket tournament in July, trying out their new skills!

All junior children are taking part in a drumming workshop and a rounders match with other small schools. This is an opportunity to meet other children and make friendships that will carry on to secondary school.

Once again, we are taking part in the Giant Sleepover, which in in aid of Unicef this year. We will be camping in the school grounds and enjoying a BBQ, talent show and lots more.

St Michael’s Cof E School, Bothel

What an extremely busy time of year in a primary school! Most people think that the weeks before Christmas are full of activity and they are right! But it doesn’t compare to the last few weeks of the Summer term. So far we have taken 22 children on a residential visit to Manchester and the Peak District, hosted an India Day for several other small schools, had two other schools visit us for a superb drama day and had a Pyjama Day where children wore their pyjamas and raised money for our PTA.

Before the end of term we have a KS1 and a KS2 sleepover in school, a KS1 trip to the Sands Centre, a school trip to South Lakes Animal Park, a very special overnight stay at Skiddaw House Youth Hostel for the Year 6 children, a nursery trip to Maryport Aquarium and a trip to Cockermouth to look at the work of the emergency services!

All this takes a lot of work, but I have always believed that such experiences have a very positive and lasting effect on the children. It’s possibly some of the most rewarding work we do as teachers.

Please remember that we have a Community Library here at School and we would love you to come borrow books! We are open between 3.30pm and 5.00pm every Monday during term time and it’s very quiet at the moment. Also, a quick reminder that our grounds are always open and are a great place to relax or play with your children. Please come and use our facilities and make the most of this safe and beautiful environment. The view from the school field is stunning at the moment.

And finally another reminder: we have a mother and toddler group here every Friday morning between 10.00am and 11.30am. It’s a fantastic little group and recently they’ve been making good use of our fantastic and safe outside area. Why not come along and join in? Mr May
