Downhole Electric Cutting Tool (DECT)

Mechanical Interventions

The DECT is a pipe severing tool that meets industry demands for safe, reliable, high precision cutting operations without using dangerous chemicals or explosives.

DescriptionThe DECT cuts oilfield tubulars with precision control leaving a machine shop quality finish. The remaining pipe can easily be fished using industry standard techniques, removing the need for subsequent clean up operations. The depth of penetration can be accurately controlled preventing damage to external casing strings, and enabling Packer retrieval operations to be undertaken.

The DECT can be deployed on mono-conductor wireline. Depth correlation is achieved by means of an analogue CCL, or by incorporating a no-go device into the toolstring.

Tool operation is controlled by a notebook PC and surface control panel. Once the tool is positioned on-depth, anchors are set and the cutting operation is initiated. The rotating cutting head is located at the bottom of the tool. During the operation, cutting speed, cut penetration, and downhole microphone response are monitored in real-time, and provide a clear indication of a successful cut.

The Free Point tool measures torque and stretch to accurately locatewhere drillpipe, tubing, or casing is stuck or partially stuck.

Description The Free Point Indicator is an electromechanical assembly designed to accurately measure torque or stretch in harsh conditions. The basic Free Point tool assembly consists of bow spring or magnet, upper and lower anchors, and a sensor section to determine stuck point. Additional components that must be run with the Free Point tool assembly are: sinker bars to overcome the holding ability of the anchors, a collar locator (CCL) to determine depth and a slack joint to relieve weight above the tool assembly when at the correct depth for making a measurement.

Caged Fullbore Flowmeter (3 arm CFBM)

Production Logging Tools

The Sondex Caged Fullbore Flowmeter is run at the bottom of the Production Logging tool string. A large diameter impeller accurately measures downhole flow rates with coverage over a large cross-section of the casing.

DescriptionThe tool has a three arm, spring-loaded cage that centers the spinner in the middle of the flow and supports tool

weight in deviated wells. The spinner runs on precision bearings, its rotation is sensed by zero drag Hall effect

detectors, allowing the measurement of very low flow rates. Normal output is 10 pulses per revolution with directional

indication. The spinner and cage assembly collapse down to tool diameter when running through tubing restrictions

to prevent damaging the blades.

Features• Injection and production flow profiling• Measurement of low flow rates• Leak detection and cross-flow• Interchangeable mechanical sections to match casing size from 4 1/2 - 9 5/8 in.• Combinable with other Ultrawire* PL Tools• Connects to either a Flowmeter Electronics (CFBE) or a Capacitance/Temperature/Flow Tool (CTF)• Modification kit available for connection to 1 3/8 in. CTF• Lockable spinner for high rate injection wells (standard feature for 9 5/8 in. tools)• Solid impeller shafts for very high rate wells

Caged Fullbore Flowmeter (6 arm CFBM)

Production Logging Tools

The Caged Fullbore Flowmeter is run at the bottom of a production logging tool string. The spinner blades and cage assembly collapse down to tool diameter, enabling it to pass through tubing restrictions without damage.

DescriptionThe tool has a six arm, spring-loaded cage that centres the spinner in the middle of the flow and supports tool weight in deviated wells. A large diameter impeller measures flow rates with coverage over a large cross-section of the casing. The spinner runs on precision bearings and its rotation is sensed by zero drag Hall-effect detectors, and the signal from the sensors is converted into a flow rate measurement. The low mechanical threshold of the tool enables it to be used in low flow rates; normal output is 10 pulses per revolution with directional indication.

Features• High deviation and horizontal well logging• Injection and production flow profiling• Measurement of low flow rates• Leak and cross-flow detection• Interchangeable mechanical sections to match casing sizes from 4 1/2 to 9 5/8 in.• Combinable with other Ultrawire* PL Tools• Connects to either a Spinner Electronics (CFBE) or a Capacitance/Temperature/Flow Tool (CTF)• Modification kit available for connection to 1 3/8 in. Casing Collar Locator (CCL)

Production Logging Tools

The Sondex* Casing Collar Locator (CCL) responds to changes in metal volume, such as pipe collars and perforations.

DescriptionAs the tool passes a collar, or changes in metal volume, lines of magnetic flux between two opposing permanent magnets are disturbed. This causes a low frequency voltage or Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) to be induced in a coil, mounted between the permanent magnets. Finally, the signal is converted by a voltage-controlled oscillator for recording in the Ultrawire* section of the tool.

Features• Combinable with other Ultrawire production logging tools• Depth control in casing or tubing• Location of casing or tubing damage• Confirmation of perforation depths or intervals

Oilfield Technology

Production Gamma Ray (PGR)

Production Logging Tools

The Production Gamma Ray (PGR) tool measures the naturally occurring radiation that is emitted by various formations to determine lithology. Radioactive scale can also be detected.

DescriptionAll PGR tools are compact, rugged and combine excellent sensitivity with high resolution. Gamma rays are detected by a Sodium Iodide scintillation crystal, amplified and counted, then sent to the appropriate telemetry tool. The detector is temperature compensated to minimise drift from the photomultiplier tube.

When calibrated, the difference between background and calibrator levels establish a ratio between raw counts and API units, allowing a calibrated display to be presented on the log in API units.

Features• Combinable with other Ultrawire* production logging tools• Depth correlation• Lithology determination• Identification of radioactive scale• Tracer monitoring• Gravel pack when used in conjunction with a gamma source• Also available in Dualconn version (1 11/16 in. tools only)

The Continuous Flowmeter Spinner is run at the bottom of a PL tool string to monitor downhole fluid flow rates. Each model should be chosen to optimize the measurement and enable passage through completion restrictions.

DescriptionThe spinner is mounted on precision roller bearings and turns as fluid passes by, this rotation is converted to signal pulses by zero drag Hall effect sensors. The pulses are then used to calculate flow rates and fluid direction (up or down flow); the flowmeter requires very little energy to initiate motion and is ideal for low flow rate surveys. The design and mechanical construction of the spinner assembly have been optimized to cope with very fast flow, sand production, and high viscosity liquids. Each model has a different size housing and impeller, and should be chosen to suit the well completion and flow regime.

Features• Flow profiling in complex well completions and

• Spinner ported shroud or open cageoptions available

• Connects to either a Flowmeter Electronics (CFBE)or a Capacitance/Temperature/Flow tool (CTF)
