  • Sid didn't like being alone. He was looking forlove and he used every opportunity to escapefrom his home in order to find it. What is strange isthat Sid isn't a person -he's actually an octopus!

    Ten years ago Harry -

Sid was living at the Portobello Aquarium inNew Zealand when he decided to escape for ~

the first time. One night, while everybody wassleeping, Sid opened the door of his tank and escapedSomebody found him a few days later. He was trying toleave the aquarium through a door.

How do animals like octopuses escape from tanks?Well, according to experts, they are intelligent animalsand their brains are bigger than other invertebrates, which explains their escape attempts. They are alsoquick to learn tricks, just like dogs. There are even casesof people teaching octopuses to open jars and playwith Rubik's cubes.

Over the following weeks Sid made more daringescape attempts. He took advantage of the times

when somebody was cleaninghis tank to make his getaway.

    Sid isn'tthe firstoctopus to

    escapefrom thePortobello

    Aquarium.

So what happened to Sid in the end? Workerseventually realized that the 15-month-old octopus wasonly lonely and wanted a mate. They agreed it wastime to return their eight-Iegged friend to nature, so oneof the employees carried Sid to the sea in a bucket. On the way to the water he made one last desperateattempt at escaping by lifting the lid of the bucket.Shortly after, he jumped into the sea and swam awayto freedom.

    THE THAM I S T ^ ^ M W / ; ; flooding

    I

    a) ^

The North Sea floods of 1953 were ene of the worst natural disasters to affect the UK. A combination of storms and high tides caused sea levis to rise over three metres above normal levis. Three hundred people died and the flooding damaged 1,600 kilmetros of coastiine and 24,000 properties.

    RRIER b) .

The river Thames has flooded many times in the past, causing damage and death. But if London fiooded today, it would be difficuit to caicuiate the cost of the damage. IVIany of the capitai's iconic sights on the banks of the river would be destroyed, transport systems would break down and miilions of lives would be affected. This is why engineers have spent a lot of time and money on projects to prevent London flooding. The most important is the Thames Barrier.

    c)

The Thames Barrier crosses the river at Woolwich in the south-east of London. Four thousand people worked on the projeot, which cost 500 million to build and officially oponed in 1984. The Thames Barrier stretches from one bank of the river to the other - a distance of 520 metres. It is the second biggest movable barrier in the worId - after one in The Netherlands. The barrier has nine concrete piers dividing the river into ten channels. At the end of each pier there are large gates which are normally open. If there is a flood threat, the gates will close, shutting off the river within 30 minutes. Since the Thames Barrier oponed, it has been used more than 100 times.

    d)

Engineers believe that the Thames Barrier will protect London from the worst effects of flooding until 2030. However, environmentalists believe that a combination of the increase in sea levis as a result of the melting of the ice caps and more frequent storms caused by climate chango will increase the risk of flooding. If things don't chango soon, the barrier will not protect London for long.

5 Richardson was attacked by a lion.

6 Richardson now works for the hospital and the conservation park.

Kevin Richardson enjoys a very special relationship with lions. He can spend the night sleeping next to a fully grown lion without having to fear for his life. Richardson works as an animal behaviourist but he has become famous as a lion whisperer. Besides lions, Richardson can charm cheetahs, leopards and hyenas. When an animal is behaving aggressively for no apparent reason, Richardson is caLled upon to work his magic. He plays with them, strokes them and cuddles them. He shows them that he means no harm and in no time at all he wins their respect.

Richardson works in a wildlife conservation park in Johannesburg, South Africa. He works with all kinds of big cats but says that his favourite animal is the lion - the king of the jungle. After studying human physiology, Richardson found a job in a hospital. He worked with people who were either waiting for or recovering from an operation. Ten years ago he realized that he could trust a lion more than he could trust another human and he made a radical career move.

The incident that changed his life happened when Richardson had a life-threatening encounter with a four-year-old
