1 Description and operation of the dosimeter/ radiometer

1.1 Functionality of dosimeter/radiometer

Rodnik 3 micro processing dosimeter/radiometer (hereinafter referred to as the dosimeter/radiometer) provides measurement:

1.5 Safety precautions

Please read this manual carefully before using dosimeter/radiometer and observe strictly safety rules and regulations. Failure to comply with these rules may result in dosimeter to suffer a malfunction. Our company's warranty does no reach the cases, arise as a result of non-compliance with the measures listed below.

● Protect the dosimeter/radiometer against humming blows and various mechanical impacts on the housing, which can lead dosimeter/radiometer to be damaged or to suffer a malfunction. ● Do not clean the dosimeter/radiometer's display with abrasive materials. ● Do not expose the dosimeter/radiometer to direct sunlight or high temperatures for long periods of time. ● Do not allow foreign objects penetrate to the interior of the housing. ● Do not allow housing of the dosimeter/radiometer to be exposed to various aggressive agents, chemicals, solvents, acids and alkalis. ● Do not allow the dosimeter/radiometer housing to get wet, it is not a waterproof device.

Do not attempt to repair the dosimeter/radiometer by yourself. There is a step up voltage inside the housing 400 Volts. The dosimeter shall be provided by authorized institution. ● If you do not plan to use the dosimeter/radiometer for a long time, remove batteries from the battery compartment, as it affects an electrolyte leakage. ● When installing the batteries, strictly observe the polarity, otherwise the dosimeter may suffer a malfunction. ● Do not use or store the dosimeter/radiometer in dusty or contaminated premises, or near open flames sources. ● When measuring objects contaminated with radioactive substances, it is recommended to place the dosimeter/radiometer in an expendable plastic bag.

1.6 Design and operation of the dosimeter/radiometer

The dosimeter/radiometer is structurally designed in full plastic shockproof housing in the shape of a white monoblock unit. SBM 20-1 Geiger-Muller gas discharge counter is used as radioactivity detector. There is an electrically operated circuit board with electronic components, as well as batteries. The operating principle of the dosimeter/radiometer is based on calculation of pulse-recurrence frequency ingoing from the counter per unit time. This pulse-recurrence is amplified, normalized in duration and amplitude, and then fed to the microprocessor, which in turn performs automatic processing, various calculations, averaging of the measurement results, and displaying it on display. The microprocessor controls the audible and light alarm, various duties to be performed, performs self-diagnostic check, and provides the accumulation of measurement results. The algorithms of operation provide continuity of measurement process. The dosimeter/radiometer has an internal non-volatile flash memory that allows you to save all settings without batteries.

2 Preparation of the dosimeter/radiometer for use

2.1 General information

● When purchasing a dosimeter/radiometer, it is necessary to check its configuration in accordance with paragraph 1.3. ● You should carefully read all sections of the user manual before you start working with the dosimeter/ radiometer. ● If radioactive substances get on the housing of the dosimeter/radiometer, its background count may be overstated. ● It is necessary to regularly make sure that there is no excessive background and measure the dosimeter/ radiometer background count in different places. ● In case of dosimeter/radiometer housing contamination, decontamination should be performed without immersion in decontaminating solutions.

Attention! After a long period of storage of the dosimeter/radiometer in a cold premises or transportation in winter conditions with a temperature below freezing point, it is advisable to keep it at room temperature for several hours before operation.

2.2 Operation

The dosimeter/radiometer is supplied with two built-in AAA batteries. To turn on the dosimeter/radiometer for the first time, you should do the following:

● Remove the dosimeter from the package. ● Press the control button.

If the dosimeter is supplied without built-in AAA batteries then it is necessary to do the following to turn it on:

● Remove the dosimeter from the package. ● Use a screwdriver to unscrew the four screws and remove lid of the battery compartment. ● Install the batteries observing the polarity. ● Place back lid of the battery compartment.

Test mode should be activated while installing the batteries. All the working segments should be shown simultaneously on display for three seconds.

There are three short beeps of different tones and the LED lights up three times. The mode is designed to check the performance of all segments of the display, LED, and acoustical radiator. 2.3 Use of the dosimeter/radiometer

● Turn on the dosimeter/radiometer, by pressing the control button briefly. The dosimeter/radiometer will show the battery charge level for one second and switch to the "MEASUREMENT" mode. ● Switch between the "MEASUREMENT" and "CLOCK" operating modes, by pressing control button briefly. ● Turn off the dosimeter/radiometer, by pressing and holding control button for more than 2 seconds. Until the "OFF" message appears on the display. After that, you need to release the button. ● Switch to the "SETTINGS" mode, by pressing and holding the control button for more than 4 seconds. Until the blinking time appears on the display. After that, you need to release the button.

2.4 Visual and sound indication

Red LED and audible sound are used to indicate the current level of radiation background in the dosimeter, in addition to the display. The red LED is blinking:

● by registering photon or particle; ● by pressing the control button; ● blinking periodically when the radioactivity threshold is exceeded. Acoustical radiator emits:

● acoustic click by registering photon or particle; ● acoustic click by pressing the control button; ● periodic tonal acoustical beep when the radioactivity threshold is exceeded.

3 Operating modes of the dosimeter/radiometer

3.1 Operating modes

● "MEASUREMENT" mode ● "CLOCK" mode ● "SETTINGS" mode 3.2 "MEASUREMENT" mode

When the "MEASUREMENT" mode is turn on, the "B" pictogram is briefly displayed pictogram "B" on the display and the battery charge level is indicated as a percentage from 0% to 100%.

The "MEASUREMENT" mode is main operation mode of the dosimeter/radiometer. There is a continuous radioactivity measurement. The measured value in mSv/h is constantly displayed on the display.

Attention! In accordance with its biological effect on humans, 0.10 mcSv/h corresponds to 10 µR/hr.

Every second, the information is updated and the dosimeter/radiometer generated an audible and light signal for each received quantum.

The scale and the position of the decimal point on the display are automatically switched by the microprocessor depending on the level of radioactivity. Display range level is from 0.01 to 999.9 mcSv/h. If the level exceeds the threshold value, the "Δ" pictogram will appear on the display in the upper-left corner. And there will be a periodic light and audible signal.

It indicates that the level of radioactivity is higher than normal and you should pay special attention to it or leave the area as soon as possible. The dosimeter displays values of and higher than 999.9 mcSv/h up to 1999 mcSv/h. At these levels, the readings on the display will be slightly underestimated from the actual value of the radioactivity. From the design feature of the detector, it has a nonlinear transfer above the level of 999.9 mcSv/h. If the value of the radiation level exceeds the maximum measurement limit of the dosimeter/radiometer – 1999 mSv/h, the display shows the abbreviation "-OL-" (Overload).

In the dosimeter/radiometer the automatic monitoring of the meter's operability is provided in the "MEASUREMENT" mode. If it suffers a malfunction, "Er1" (Error1 – Error 1) abbreviation instead of the radioactivity level will be shown on display.

The message indicates the need dosimeter/radiometer to be transferred to authorized service center.

Attention! If you want the dosimeter/radiometer to work in the "MEASUREMENT" mode without replacing the batteries for up to 10 years under normal radiation conditions, you need to go to the dosimeter menu and turn off the background sound of quantum hit. By briefly pressing the control button, set the "dash" symbol, which means that the sound of the quantum impulse is disabled.

3.3 "CLOCK" mode

By briefly pressing the control button in the "MEASUREMENT" mode, the dosimeter/radiometer will switch to the "CLOCK" mode. The time will be shown on the display.

In this mode, the level of radioactivity is continuously monitored and a periodic light and audible signal is shown on display when the threshold level is exceeded. The dosimeter provides the ability to automatically switch to the "CLOCK" mode from the "MEASUREMENT" mode. By default, the dosimeter/radiometer switches to it after 5 minutes after switching on. The transfer time can be changed or disabled in the "SETTINGS" mode.

3.4 "SETTINGS" mode

To enter the "SETTINGS" mode, hold the control button for 4 seconds until the blinking time appears on the display. In each section of the SETTINGS menu, its short name and value are blinking alternately. To change the value, you can by short pressing of the control button. To move to the next section of the menu, hold the control button for 4 seconds. When you go through all the sections of the "SETTINGS" menu, the "SAVE" label is briefly displayed on the display, which informs you that all the changed data is saved in non-volatile flash memory. After that, the dosimeter switches to the main "MEASUREMENT" operation mode.

"SETTINGS" Menu

"Time setting" – setting the clock. "Time setting" – setting the minutes. "ADJ" (ADJUSTMENT) – compensation accuracy of the clock. "AVE" (AVERAGING) – measuring time of radioactivity level. "LEV" (LEVEL) – alarm activation threshold level. "PUS" (PUSHBUTTON) – impulse sound duration by pressing the control button. "QUA" (QUANTUM) – quantum impulse sound duration of the. "SHU" (SHUTDOWN) – auto power shutdown. "ALA" (ALARM) – turns on/off the warning siren. "LED" – enables/disables the LED blinking. "FAC" (FACTORY) – reset to factory settings.

"Time setting" section – setting the clock.

By briefly pressing the control button, set the time in hours. "Time setting" section – setting the minutes.

By briefly pressing the control button, set the time in minutes. "ADJ" section – compensation accuracy correction of the clock.

Select a value from -31 to +31 by briefly pressing the control button. One step is ± 1 second for 3 days.

"AVE" Section – time of level measurement of radioactivity.

By briefly pressing the control button select the measurement time in the range from 20 to 300 seconds.

"LEV" section – setting the threshold level of alarm switching on.

By briefly pressing the control button, select the alarm threshold in the range from 0.25 to 10.00 mcSv/h. The "dash" symbol indicates that the threshold level is not set. "PUS" section – duration of the sound impulse of pressing the button.

By briefly pressing the control button select a time from 5 to 100 milliseconds. The "dash" symbol means the button sound is muted. "QUA" section – duration of the quantum sound impulse.

Press the control button briefly to select a time from 5 to 100 milliseconds. The "dash" symbol means that the sound of the quantum impulse is disabled. "SHU" section – auto time shutdown.

By briefly pressing the control button, select the shutdown time in the range from 5 to 60 minutes. The "dash" symbol indicates that the shutdown time is not set.

"ALA" section – enabling /disabling the siren.

By briefly pressing the control button select:

● "on" – The audible siren is turned on. ● "OFF" – The audible siren is turned off. " LED " Section – LED on/off.

By briefly pressing the control button select: ● "on" – The LED is turned on. ● "OFF" – The LED is turned off. "FAC" section – Reset and factory reset.

By briefly pressing the control button select: ● "on" – Set the factory settings. ● "OFF" – Do not set the factory settings.

If you select the value "on", then after exit this section, the microprocessor will set the factory settings, which are specified in Table 3.

4 Batteries charge control

● If the battery charge drops in the "MEASUREMENT" mode and is in the range from 0% to 20%, the "B" pictogram starts blinking in the lower left corner of the display. At the same time, the dosimeter/radiometer remains full operational capability.

● If the battery charge reaches 0%, the "B" pictogram is displayed and the "Lo" symbol appears on the display.

The dosimeter/radiometer stops producing audible and light signals and does not display the level of radioactivity. In this case, both batteries must be replaced at the same time.

To replace the batteries, you should do the following:

● Use a screwdriver to open the lid. ● Install the elements observing the polarity. ● Place back cover of the lid compartment.

Attention! The manufacturer shall not be liable for the malfunction of the dosimeter/radiometer, caused by improper use of batteries. Applications of a different standard size or the use of elements that differ in rated voltage.

5 Search and containment of radiation sources

To detect radioactive sources, the dosimeter/radiometer should be laid out in such manner as to the back side via windows of the dosimeter/radiometer is directed to the object being examined. Closer the dosimeter is to the object being examined, higher the detection efficiency will be. When measuring the radioactive fluids contamination, it is necessary to conduct studies above the surface and prevent the liquid from entering the housing and inside the dosimeter/radiometer. Thin, leak-proof polythene bag is useful for avoiding water penetration. The dosimeter/radiometer movement speed along the object should be minimal. The sound and light pulses spacing frequency in the absence of radioactive sources will be constant. An increase in the frequency of the sound and light pulses indicates an approach to the source of radiation. And it will be decrease when dosimeter/radiometer is being moved away from the radiation source. It allows to provide localization of radioactive elements.

To properly measure the radioactive contamination of food, building materials, or other objects, it is necessary to:

1. Measure the radioactive background level at a distance of several meters from the measured object. 2. Take the dosimeter/radiometer as close as possible to the measured object and make a measurement. 3. Compare with the obtained results. If the readings near the measured object are higher, then it has a radioactive contamination.

Attention! Remember that ionizing radiation is statistical and stochastic nature, and, it is necessary to perform several measurement cycles at one point to reliably determine radiation level.

6 Maintenance routine

Maintenance of the dosimeter/radiometer is provided as a matter of maintaining its constant readiness for operation, to ensure maximum service life. It consists in carrying out preventive maintenance and periodic verification of the dosimeter's operability.

Maintenance includes:

● configuration check; ● the dosimeter/radiometer external condition examination; ● dust and dirt removal from the outside surface; ● timely batteries replacement; ● batteries operability check; ● decontamination of the housing.

Configuration check is provided according to Table 1. It is necessary to make sure that there are no chips and cracks during an external examination of the dosimeter/ radiometer. When removing dust and dirt, wipe the display only with a soft tissue. Decontamination of the housing is carried out by cleaning with a soft tissue, moistened with ethyl alcohol in the event if there is radioactive dust on the housing. It is necessary to keep from moisture to the internal cavities of the dosimeter/ radiometer.

7 Trouble shooting

The list of possible dosimeter/radiometer trouble shooting are given in Table 4.

8 Storage

During long-term storage the dosimeter/radiometer should be stored in the warehouse in manufacturer packaging without batteries at an ambient temperature of +5 to +40 °C and a relative humidity of no more than 80% at a temperature of 25 °C. Storage of the dosimeter without packaging is prohibited. The maximum storage period in warehouses since being manufactured is 12 months. The storage premises should be free of dust, acid and alkali vapors, aggressive gases and other harmful corrosive impurities.

9 Disposal

If the dosimeter/radiometer was used in everyday life, it does not pose no hazard to life, health and the environment, so disposal should be provided as usual. If the dosimeter/radiometer is contaminated with radioactive substances and it is impossible to provide its complete decontamination, the dosimeter/radiometer is subject to disposal as solid radioactive waste in by relevant authorized institutions.

10 Transportation

The dosimeter/radiometer in packaging of the manufacturer and in the off mode is allowed to be transported by any closed type of transport at any distance. Packed dosimeters must be fastened in the transport vehicle. The placement and fastening of packed dosimeter/radiometer in the transport vehicle must provide it's stable and reliable position, eliminate the risk of interaction from each other, as well as against walls of the transport vehicle. When transported by open transport, packages with dosimeter/radiometer should be secured from direct exposure from atmospheric precipitation. When transported by water or sea, the dosimeter/radiometer should be packed in a sealed with polyethylene air-proof case with a silica gel dryer. When transported by air, dosimeters must be packed in sealed compartments. During cargo operations, the dosimeter should not be exposed to atmospheric precipitation.

11 Manufacturer's warranty

The manufacturer guarantees correct and reliable operation of the dosimeter/radiometer while the Consumer complies with all operation, transportation and storage rules and conditions, specified in this manual. The warranty period of the dosimeter/ radiometer is 12 months from the date of sale via mass retailer. In the case of absence of a mark on the sale of the dosimeter/radiometer by a trading enterprise, the beginning of the service life is counted from the date of the storage warranty period end. The warranty period of storage is 6 months from the date of acceptance of the dosimeter/radiometer by representative of the manufacturer's Quality Control Dept. Warranty and post-warranty repairs are provided by the manufacturer or an authorized institution. The warranty period of the dosimeter/radiometer is extended for the period of warranty repair. The duration of the established warranty period does not cover batteries. Replacement of the elements is not constituted as a warranty case and is provided at the expense of the consumer.

The dosimeter/radiometer is not covered by the warranty in the following cases:

● if the dosimeter or its components have scratches, cracks, chips, loose parts inside the case, color spots on the display; ● storage condition rules transportation and operation of the dosimeter were violated; ● if there are traces of unauthorized removal of the electronic module or attempts to make changes to its design or software; ● in the presence of damage caused by a natural disaster; ● inside of the case, foreign bodies, any liquid residues or insects are found; ● the factory number has been removed or replaced, or it does not match the number in the warranty card; ● the absence of a properly and clearly filled out warranty card, or it cannot be identified due to damage or it has corrections, expunctions, crossing outs; ● should violations in the operation of the product arisen as a result of actions of the third parties or force majeure, repair in an unauthorized institution; ● if there are traces of exposure to high or low temperatures, high humidity.

20 Radioactivity Briefs

Radioactive ionizing radiation is the flux of particles and quanta of electromagnetic radiation, while passing through a substance leads to the ionization of its atoms or molecules. This is a natural phenomenon, always presented in the environment around us. We are constantly affected by radiation in the shape of cosmic rays from outer space. We are constantly exposed to natural radioactive components in the soil and in the building materials of our houses. Alpha rays is the flux of the nuclei of helium atoms. In the air, alpha radiation passes no more than 2 cm, and has a very low penetration power. It can be held up with an ordinary sheet of paper or an outer layer of skin. Alpha radiation is not dangerous as long as the radioactive substance emitting alpha particles do not get deep into a living organism. Beta radiation is a flux of electrons or positrons. Beta radiation has a higher penetration power, it passes into the living organism tissues of the body to a depth of several centimeters. You can protect yourself from it's interaction with a thin sheet of metal, window glass and clothing.

Gamma and X-ray radiation is an electromagnetic radiation that occurs during nuclear transformations or particle annihilation. Gamma radiation has a high penetration power. The air can covers long distance and can only be stopped by a thick lead or concrete slab. Neutron radiation is a flux of neutrons. It is characterized by an even higher penetration power greater than gamma radiation has. In ordinary life, humanity is most often faced with the danger of gamma radiation, so most radiation monitoring devices measure this type of radiation. The measurement unit of effective dose equivalent is measured in Sieverts and characterizes how ionizing radiation affects on biological object. The exposure dose is measured in Roentgens and characterizes the measure of air ionization. The dose rate is the absorbing radiation dose per unit of time, measured in Roentgens per hour (R/h). The R/h dimension is read as an X-ray per hour. To transit from equivalent dose units to exposure dose units, a coefficient close to 100 should be used. For example, for a dose rate of 0.10 mcSv/h would correspond to 10.0 µR/hr. The natural radiation background is approximately 0.10 mcSv/h.

The maximum level for human radiation safety is 0.30 mcSv/h. The dimension of mcSv/h is read as a microsivert per hour- it is a unit of measurement of radiation.

Radiation background levels:

● 0.15 mcSv/h – Natural radiation background. ● 1.50 mcSv/h – The level of radiation background in the aircraft cabin. ● 2.28 mcSv/h – The average permissible background level for workers on nuclear power stations. ● 17.12 mcSv/h – The level of radiation background that dramatically enhances the likelihood of developing cancer.

Human received doses and its consequences:

● 0.002 Sv – Dose that a person receives per year. ● 0.05 Sv – Limiting radiation dose for nuclear power stations per year. ● 1.0 Sv – The dose of radiation disease arisen. ● 5.0 Sv – 50% of those radiation-exposed will die within 60 days. ● 100 Sv – Death will occur in a few hours.
