The Senate is now considering dangerous legislation that would

usurp Ohio’s right to set its own standards for those who are

allowed to carry a concealed gun in our state. The Thune

Concealed Carry Amendment, which could be voted on in the

Senate today, would require Ohio’s police of!cers to recognize

concealed carry permits issued in other states, even if those other

states have far weaker laws than we do.

We mayors strenuously oppose any federal attempt to strip our

right to set standards for carrying concealed guns. Doing so

would threaten the safety of our police of!cers by making it far

more dif!cult for them to distinguish law-abiding gun owners

from common criminals. It would also make it easier for gun

traf!ckers to sell illegally.

Here in Ohio, the legislature has adopted sensible and constitutional

standards for issuing concealed carry permits, including allowing

law enforcement of!cers to use their own discretion to decide

whether a person is a substance abuser or is in danger of becoming

one. Given the fact that in the last 10 years, 15 police of!cers have

been killed by gun!re in Ohio, we believe the right thing to do is

to preserve this critical of!cer discretion.

Ohio also denies permits to anyone who was convicted of a

misdemeanor resisting arrest charge within the past ten years.

And, in fact, Ohio has decided not to recognize the permits issued

by 29 other states.

The Thune Concealed Carry Amendment would overturn that

judgment and usurp Ohio law, undermining many of its safeguards.

Senator Voinovich and Senator Brown: We urge you to stand

with us and law enforcement organizations like the International

Association of Chiefs of Police and the Major Cities Chiefs

Association to !ght this attempt to usurp Ohio’s right to set

its own public safety laws.

Senator Voinovich: we appeal to you especially, because as

Governor you always stood up for reasonable, common sense

restrictions on concealed carry permits. We ask you to continue

to support public safety by opposing this effort to gut the

laws Ohio has on the books.

Today, 450 mayors across the country – including 50 mayors

right here in Ohio – are asking you to stand with us to protect

Ohioans and protect our right to determine our own public

safety laws. Will you stand with mayors and police chiefs to

protect Ohio’s laws?

Sincerely,

Mayors Against Illegal Guns
