I appreciate your support and encouragement over the past few months more than I can adequately express, but I will be taking a brief hiatus from doing this column until Jan. 14. Like many transplants, I need to escape this northern cli- mate, but I plan to resume the column with the help of my local contacts. Over the winter this column will only appear twice a month, and I will make every effort to include all newsworthy functions and hap- penings. For local events and news that I may miss you can check out the community calendar. Christmas can be a marvel- lous or a difficult time for people. Please open your hearts and homes to those less fortunate, and you will also feel blessed. Station 40 firefighters in Baysville have been very busy in recent weeks col- lecting from the residents in and around Baysville for the local food banks. Glen Maynard, fire chief, would like to extend sincere thanks and grateful appreciation to every- one who contributed this year, with special thanks to the Thomas brothers and all of the residents of Dickie Lake. The bridge scores for Dec. 10 are: first, Maureen Wilson; sec- ond, Roy Donnelly; third, (for the first time on the board) Kathleen Boyce. Well done, folks. My sincere best wishes to every- one celebrating birthdays over the next few weeks and special con- gratulations to Shirley and Len VanClieaf on their anniversary. You may be getting a little frus- trated by all the snow piling along the roadsides and sidewalks, and you may be a little sore from all the shovelling you have been doing, and you may be fed up with the power failures and brown-outs, but a wonderful thing is about to happen. On Dec. 22 you will have made it past the shortest day of the year. Personally, I almost, but not quite, like that day more than Christmas because it means the days will start getting longer, even if it is only be a second or two a day. I heard on the news recently that this year an extra second is being added to our time on Dec. 31 because the earth is slowing down. A remarkable thing, isn’t it?
