Take home messages 2014 Carefully monitor crops for GPA presence and movement –
flights Should I spray for GPA?
– Entire crop infected with virus = NO
– Patches of crop infected with virus = MAYBE
– Uninfected crop (incl. pulses) adjacent to infected = MAYBE What we don’t know:
– Yield impact from later virus infection• Yield loss can occur from infection up to mid-pod
– But how much? Is it economic to treat?
Take home messages 2015 BWYV and GPA will be around next year
– Virus and aphid is around every year– Visual monitoring still best
• Yellow sticky traps– Need regular sampling and interpretation
– www.entosupplies.com.au
At what levels will depend on interaction between GPA (Pest) – Seasonal conditions (Environment) –Weed hosts, crop hosts (Hosts)
2014 said to be a 1 in 20 or 1 in 40 year event
Take home messages 2015 (cont’d) But higher summer rainfall and drier/warmer
autumns are the projections by climate scientists??
All seed should be treated with insecticide– Scout crops 4-5 weeks after emergence– Use sticky traps to monitor aphid numbers &
movement
Apply Transform if GPA is present and conditions conducive @ 4-5 weeks post-emergence
GPA sampling for resistance testing
GRDC FastTrack Project– Investigate infection cases to see what triggered
them– Require more GPA samples from NSW for
resistance testing– See Don McCaffery
Controlling aphids in canola
Legislation state based In NSW Pirimicarb and Transform are the ONLY
two products registered for control of aphids in canola
GPA has resistance to pirimicarb – further testing to occur in 2014
The honey bee industry are justifiably concerned– Communication is the key
