EDITORIAL Dear Friends, Each child feels the necessity of belonging to a group. We need to provide the opportunity for all the children to participate in a team event in their life. It could be any event where they can get a group experience. Don Bosco Anbu Illam did give one such ex- perience for them to participate in human chain, sports, scouts, cultural competitions and celebrations. Thus they have a chance to bring out their best potentials as a team. They learn the follow- ing skills in their life through team building efforts. They learn to communicate with each other and accomplish the task in a more successful way. TEAM Together Everyone Achieves More. Children learn to work together only in a team. It fosters collaboration and innovation. Any team works hard to bring out the best in a creative way. It also gives them a celebration, fun and motivation. After a podium finish in any major tournament and competitions usually their energy level is dou- bled. Team bonding activities will improve their performance in studies and work place. I thank our DBAI team and all the club members of our shelter homes for their contribution. I thank sincerely everyone who were involved in team building and programmes in the month of November. Don Bosco Anbu Illam management, staff and children wish everyone a very happy Christmas and bright New Year 2018. Mental Health in Work place - DBAI Staff Animation On 4 November, 2017 DBAI staff had a day of animation on the theme ‘Mental Health in Workplace.’ The session was handled by Mr. Thaddeus, Associate Director, Niraivagam (Don Bosco Institute of Psychological Services, Chennai). Inputs on mental health, healthy work culture, practical tips and simple exercises were taught to them in simple terms and practical ways The staff actively participated in the seminar and made the most out of the day.

Children educated on ‘Good Touch and Bad Touch’ Students of Don Bosco Hr. Sec. School, Gedilam, Vilupuram, were given a day of awareness on Good touch and Bad touch, Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) and Child Rights by our DBAI Childline team on 4 November, 2017. The students and staff were addressed separately on the theme. More than 1500 children were reached out to through this timely initiative.

Seminar on POCSO Act The social work department of Loyola college, Chennai organized one day seminar on The Protection of Children form Sexual Offense (POCSO) Act on 11 November, 2017. Child representatives and Mr. Ashok, our DBAI Staff, attended this seminar that dealt on care and protection of Children and guidelines on POCSO Act, 2012.

Workshop on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy The counseling team of DBAI participated in a workshop on ‘Cognitive Behavioural Therapy’ (CBT) organized by Niraivagam on 11-12 November, 2017 in Chennai. The workshop had 52 active participants from different settings. It had focused on fundamentals of CBT, CBT for anxiety and depression. We are sure the theories and practices of the workshop will help our counselors in rendering quality services to our deserving children.

Investiture Ceremony for New Scouts Eight of our new scouts received their scarf during a scout investiture ceremony held on 6 November, 2017. The event was presided over by Fr. Thamathiruthuvam SDB, in the presence of Fr. Joseph Leo SDB, the Director. With the new scouts the strength of the troop has risen to twenty eight.

Inauguration of New Centres for DB-ICSC Project On 16 November, 2017, three community centers were inaugurated for DBICSC project at Iyopdhikuppam, Ondikuppam and Pallavan Nagar. They will be used for the purpose of animation and community activities. The following day children from our target areas participated in an awareness campaign to promote the cause of child rights. Slogans on Child Rights were raised during the event to create awareness among the general public. More than 500 people were given awareness through the event.

Childline Se Dosti Week 2017 The Childline unit of DBAI together with its sister institutes in the city organized a week long celebration to mark the Childline Se Dosti week from 13-19 November, 2017. Through a variety of activites like Suraksha bandhan, Human chain on Child Rights and Protection, Debate on online safety for children, competitions between centres and school awareness programms, more than 2000 general public and school children were given awareness on the need to ensure a ‘safer childhood’ to every child.

Project Visitation – Welcome Mr. Georg

Mr.Georg Muller, the Project Manager, Don Bosco Mondo – Germany, visited DBAI on 24 November, 2017 to evaluate the status of Don Bosco Intervention in Coastal Slum Community (DBICSC). He was given a traditional welcome by the staff. Fr. Joseph Leo, the Director introduced the project team and report of the works carried out in the intervention areas were presented by Mr. Jeya Prakash, Assistant coordinator of the project. Mr. Georg shared his views and expressed satisfaction over the current

status of the project. Accompanied by the team, he visited two of our target communities at Iyopdhikuppam and Ondikuppam and interacted with the beneficiaries.

Mega Talent Show – A Platform To Perform

The Rotary club of T. Nagar in the city organized in view of the silver jubilee of their club, a mega level talent hunt on 22 November, 2017 giving 64 NGOs in the city a platform to bring to limelight many hidden talents of the poor and deserving children. 28 participants from DBAI took part in the various onstage and offstage events conducted and bagged many prizes. The mime our children staged won second place among many entries.

Scout Patrol Leaders Orientation Camp Leader representatives of DBAI scouts completed their district level Patrol Leaders Orientation Camp conducted in Don Bosco Hr. Sec. School, Pannur, between 24-26 November, 2017. They were part of 350 scouts who participated in the training programme and were given training in leadership skills, tent making, crafts, scout anthems, common songs in scouting, camp fire and general knowledge.

DBAI Celebrates the Parents of Salesians The parents of the priests, brothers and sisters working in Don Bosco Anbu Illam were invited and honored during Mamma Margaret day celebrated on 25 November, 2017 at Bosco Illam, MKB Nagar. There was a Solemn Holy Eucharist followed by a short cultural programme and felicitation to appreciate and thank the parents of the Salesians.

DBAI HCL Gurukul Clubs Perform at the National Level HCL Foundation conducted Annual sports fest for Don Bosco Anbu Illam HCL Gurukul clubs. Our children participated in most events and won many prizes. The winners of these events were taken to participate in the National level competition held in New Delhi where they outplayed their opponents and bagged prizes in Kho-Kho, Football, Kabadi and athletic events. They were honored specially by Mr. Newton from HCL Foundation, with trophies and medals on 25 November, 2017. The children who displayed their innovative science exhibits from Kodambakkam and Madurovoyal clubs were also honoured during the event.

A GLIMPSE OF CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATION IN COMMUNITY CENTRES

Drawing Competition to mark Children’s Day Celebrations

Drawing competition was conducted to mark the 128th Birthday of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru’s at six communities of DBICSC project on the topic ‘Child Rights’ and ‘Children and Nation,’ on 16 November, 2017. Nearly 350 children from our target communities took active participation in the event. Meaningful and colorful display of artworks on the theme was the outcome. Thiruvottiyur Boys and Girls club celebrated children Day. Mrs. Rajeshwari, the former headmistress of Dhanlashmi School, Royapuram, presided over the event and oriented the children on the importance of education. 55 children participated in the programme and the winners of the competitions and exhibitions were rewarded during the event. Children’s day and world day of the poor were celebrated together with the evening study centre children of Flower Baazar pavement area, Broadway. During the programme educational materials were distributed to nearly 50 children.

Accenture team visits DBAI

On 12 November, 2017 a group of Accenture team members animated our children for half a day as part of their annual CSR programme. They oriented the students on life skills, the need to take academics se-riously for a bright future. In their short animation they educated them through entertainment by way of tricks, small scale magic's and appreciated the talents of students after their stage performance. The event came to it close with sumptuous lunch.

Caring for the Earth - Our Common Home Nearly 500 children from six YaR (Young at Risk) centres of Chennai province, together with their directors, got together for the first time at the province level to celebrate a unique theme - Caring for the Earth - Our Common Home. The YaR Day was organized by Father Joseph Leo SDB, the province YaR coordinator and the other commission members at Don Bosco Beatitudes, Vyasarpadi, on 26 November, 2017. Father Xavier Pakiam SDB, the Economer of the province, presided over the inaugural event and addressed the children on the theme. It was followed by the guest performance of Mr. Balaji, the cine artist, who invited the children to contribute their share in caring for the mother earth. Mime and Dance competitions were conducted among the YaR centres and together with it the children presented the unique best practices carried out in their respective YaR centres. DBICA, the communication department of the province screened short films on the topic and raised awareness on the need to rise up to the occasion. Mr. Georg Muller, Project Manager, Bonn - Germany, presided over the prize distribution ceremony and presented prizes to the children.

School Awareness in Katpadi Zone Mr. Anbu our DBAI staff gave awareness to schools in Katpadi zone, Vellore district. Awareness on child rights and protection, Child sexual abuse, good touch and bad touch, child marriage and child labour were the areas covered during the campaign. More than 350 children were reached out during the month.

Free Eye camp at Kannagi Nagar A free eye camp was conducted at Kannagi Nagar for J11 police boys’ and girls’ club children and community people on 12 November, 2017. The camp was organized in association with MN Eye Hospital. More than 300 people benefitted through this camp. Those who needed special treatment have been recommended for further treatment free of cost.

MIGRANT YOUTH SERVICES Migrants’ Exposure programme The Servite brothers were offered a week long exposure between 6-11 November, 2017. They were exposed to the life situation and challenges faced by the migrant laborers’ in Chennai city, especially in the construction sites, Koyambeddu market, and brick kiln sites. Fr. Bosco, Mrs. Geetha, Mr. Moorthi, Dr. Bernard Sammy, Fr. Sabastine and Fr.Felix addressed the brothers on Mi-grant Issues and shared with them their experience about their life style, working conditions and the chal-lenges faced by the migrants.

Two Children Home Placed

On 24th November 2017 Bro. Abhay went to Kolkata and Bihar to home place two children who were making a living even as minors. Sunil Kumar, who was working in Tiruppur as a child labourer, and Ashith involved in selling Pannipoori at Tiruchy were rescued and accompanied back to their own home towns. While Sunil was restored and handed over to his parents in Bihar, Ashith was produced in Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Kolkata for further follow up.

Survey on Migrant Domestic Workers Survey on migrant domestic workers in all the slums of Chennai city is underway. The data collection aims to identify and reach out to the migrant domestic workers in the city. More than 100 people have been surveyed to date and this helps the study and understanding of the life situations and the struggles faced by the migrant domestic workers who are working in the houses and in the flats.

Consultation on Skill training for construction workers On 25 November, 2017, the skill training consultation for construction workers was organised at Kovilambakkam by Mr. Pon Kumar, Convener for Tamil Nadu Construction labourers’ central union. A team of consulters were also present to discuss the issues of construction workers and the importance of providing training to the unskilled and unorganized laborers. Mr. Mohan Raj, Larson and Tourbou limited, Deputy Director Ms. Madhav Das, Ministry of Skill Development, President, Builders’ Association, Road contractors, and contractors were present for the training. Relief Works for the Migrants Recent deluge in the city of Chennai witnessed, thrashed the hopes of the migrants working and staying in their labour camps. Their living spaces were flooded with water and they had practically nothing to manage on their own. Don Bosco Migrant Youth Services responded to their need by timely distribution of basic supplies, like, food packets, dresses, and bed sheets. Thanks to the sponsors and well wishers who generously contributed to this noble cause.
