COATINGSAUTOMATION

TECHNOLOGICAL OFFER IRT Saint Exupéry develops new multifunctional coatings application by 6-axes robot for saving non-recurring, recurring costs and reducing manufacturing cycle as well as increasing performance (weight, curved surface, high resolution pictures).

This platform is able to be adapted for all conventional

tools by:

> activation and surface preparation > spray applications > curing> control > specific new devices for coatings could be also easily adapted like ink jet printing.

This is a competitive advantage at IRT Saint Exupéry for elaboration of FAL Paintshop, OEM’s Material and Processes Design Offices expectations.

• 6 axes robot• 0 < v < 11m.s-1• Arm length: 1450 mm• Repeatability: 0.05 mm• Dedicated software for specific applications

(i.e. ink jet printing)

• Paint Booth dimensions: 4000 x 2960 x 2870 mm• Option for tracking & locating

MARKET & NEEDSThe automated coating application device is key to develop digital factory of tomorrow and smart structures. The request for a durable solution is focusing on new robust, agile and fast technologies. As such, automation is the best solution.

Thus, our new automation process for UV curing and jet printing technologies offers elaboration capacities for today and tomorow coatings.

Benefits:

> cycle time reduction, RC and NRC savings,

> flexible customization for curved surfaces,

> VOC reduction,

> durability (compared to adhesive films),

> thickness, weight & fuel savings.

PAINT APPLICATION SPRAY GUN• High volume, low pressure for accuracy, aesthetical results, reliability and high transfer rate• Best control in layer-thickness compared to other technologies (airless, airmix)• Nozzle : 1 mm• Compatible with all current paint used in the aerospace industry

FIRST RESULTS

The first technological results are on the automation of multifunctional coatings, with the proof of concept demonstration with the partners done on:

Set up of automated painting, UV-curing and ink jet printing systems for aircraft decoration on specific positions of representative A320 curved panels,Capability of synchronisation between the robot and the different effector devices (ink jet print heads, spray gun, UV-curing LED lamp,…),Nb: Preliminary performances have already been assessed by the Innovative Coatings Platform of IRT Saint Exupéry.

ROBOT & PAINT BOOTH• 6 axes robot• Compatible with others Final Assembly Line (FAL) paintshop activities (surface preparation before painting, post application quality control,…)• 3 curved panels 1.2m x 1.2m (radius of curvature representative of A320 fuselage)• Robot speed (0,005 to 11 m.s-1)

Tool: Maximum load with guaranted repeatability

9 kg

Range of Action 1450 mm

Repeatability 0.04 mm

UV CURING SYSTEM• High accuracy UV-A

source (395 nm)• Peak Irradiance:

16 W.cm2• High power for the

selected wavelength• Air cooled and

optimised energy consumption

• Emitting window: 150 ± 1 x 22 ± 0.5 mm
