SYMPATHY

We offer our sympathy to Mrs Appledore, Ian and family on the passing of Ian’s father, a loved father, father-in -law and grandfather.

We also offer our sympathy to the family of Mrs Margaret Kennedy. Mrs Kennedy passed away recently. Mrs Kennedy was a former teacher of music at St Mary’s School. She volunteered for many years at our school and we are most grateful for all that she taught our students.

We are also grateful for the time our students spent with Mrs Kennedy during their visits to Wattle last year.

MOTHER’S DAY

Thanks to all those mums, grandmothers, great grandmothers and other significant females in the students’ lives for your attendance at our Mother’s Day Liturgy, gift making and lunch last Friday. We hope you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day.

Thanks to the staff and students who prepared the food for lunch.

DOLLY’S DREAM and ELLI MARTHA FOUNDATIONS

Students and staff wore something blue last Friday to stand together against bullying for the first “Do it for Dolly” day, a day created by Tick and Kate Everett, parents of Dolly. Dolly took her own life at age 14 after extended periods of bullying and cyberbullying. The day seeks to raise awareness about the seriousness of bullying and its devastating effects.

Funds raised for “Dolly’s Dream” go towards many projects such as introducing cyber safety workshops and eSmart programs into schools and lobbying for tough penalties for cyber bullies. Thanks to Hailey for bringing this to our attention. Students were invited to wear something blue, Dolly’s favourite colour, and to make a gold coin donation. Thank you to Tammy and Emma who donated over 100 blue cupcakes which were sold to raise extra funds. Thank you also to all the students, staff and families who made a donation. $182.50 was raised for Dolly’s Dream Foundation and the same amount, $182.50 was donated to the Elli Martha Foundation. Thank you everyone for your generous donations.

The children will be leaving school at 9.30am and we will be returning before the end of the school day. Please watch for permission notes etc. The children may wear their winter sports uniform. They need to bring their snack and drink bottle. Hot roast rolls will be provided for lunch. If your child does not eat/like this option they need to bring their own lunch.

NAPLAN At the time of writing this newsletter our experiences with NAPLAN ONLINE have been quite positive. We have completed Writing and Reading and today, Conventions of Language. We have had some minor technical difficulties but the students have taken these difficulties in their stride and have been patient whilst we sort out the issues. Well done. All children have approached these tasks in a relaxed way. We need to remember that NAPLAN is just one snapshot of our students’ learning. It is another piece of data, but remember please, only one piece of many that make up your son or daughter’s learning profile. The computer or person marking the NAPLAN tasks does not know what a beautiful child you have - we do! We ask that our students give the task their best effort which every child has done. Great effort. We will conclude our NAPLAN tasks with Numeracy on Monday.

Later this year we are proposing to take all the children to the theatre production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The show will be playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne. We are currently investigating the logistics of making this happen. The date we are attending this production is Wednesday November 13 . More details to follow.
