Exhibit categories rangefrom creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources,vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules forspecific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell UniversityCooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thurs-day. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 9th from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm atthe fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judgedbased on the capability of the youth, and not by comparing one youth and/or exhibi t against another(referred to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Someexhibits will be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. THE CCC CONTINUES TO REACH FOR THE STARS. The Salem Courthouse CommunityCenter’s newest club, the Salem Astronomers, is in its second year and continues to grow inpopularity. Under the direction of Bill Frederick, the club has attracted much interest and has agrowing membership. The club meets at the CCC at 7 pm on the third Wednesday of each monthwith the objective of sharing a common interest in astronomy and learning more about the cosmos.Bill is a hands-on club director emailing members daily with updates so they can navigate their waythrough the night skies. CAMBRIDGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM THIRD SUMMER PROGRAM.Wednesday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. the Cambridge Historical Socie ty & Museum will hold the thirdn a series of summer Wednesday night programs at the Museum on Broad Street. Mr. Ken Gottry, aocal historian, will speak of his project - the history of the Yellow Brick Road celebrating its 100th

nniversary. In the 1800s the flooding of Blair’s Brook (now Owl Kill) made Main Steet and Springtreet impassable for days even after the briefest of showers. The East End and West End werehysically, politically, and economically separated. In 1913 the village voted to pave Main Street

with yellow bricks. While the project served its ultimate goal of uniting the two communities, it alsomphasized their long-held sense of independence. Following in his father’s footsteps, Ken Gottry, araveling computer consultant, dabbles in local history. Ken will relive the village’s history, culminatingn the construction of the Yellow Brick Road by his great grandfather, William Hitchcock. Come outn August 14 at 7:00 p.m. and hear Ken relive this important event in the history of Cambridge. The

Museum will open at 6:00 p.m. for tours with refreshments to follow.

NINTH ANNUAL CARDBOARD BOAT RACE Hudson Crossing Park presents its 9th AnnualCardboard Boat Race on Saturday, August 10th (rain date Sunday, August 11th) at Fort HardyPark Beach on Route 29 in Schuylerville from 8am to 3pm. The first race launches at 1pm and bestphoto opportunities are between 12pm and 2pm. Admission is free for spectators. GHOST CARAVAN REGISTERING GUESTS FOR TOUR

OF THURMAN SITES; Thurman Station Association (TSA),

announces that registration is now open for participation in itsAugust 17th “Historical Hauntings of Thurman Ghost Tour: A

Journey through Time” ($20). This ghost caravan will meet atThurman town hall and wend its way to four sites in that town

where paranormal activity has been experienced and recorded bySally Feihel of Adirondack Spectral Investigations. Feihel, whoorganized her group to provide free help to property owners who

seek explanations for otherwise inexplicable happenings in theirhomes, will lead a morning and afternoon tour that day.

The morning group will assemble at 10 a.m. at Thurman townhall, and guests will follow Feihel in their own vehicles to four

sites where they will hear about the investigations conducted

there and be encouraged to open themselves up to the sensationof lingering presences. Ride sharing is encouraged, due to limitedparking space at sites. The afternoon group is asked to arrive at

town hall by noon, and from noon to 2 p.m. both groups will beserved light refreshments and see a demonstration of the evidence-

collecting equipment used by Feihel and view some of therecordings taken at area sites. The afternoon tour will caravan out

at 2 p.m., returning at 4. Feihel encourages those interested tosign up early, and will offer a discounted fee of $15 for those

registering at Thurman Station Showcase on July 27 (1883 StonyCreek Road, Thurman, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or a discount of $3 tothose signing up in July at Thurman Monday Night Concerts in

the Park, 7-9 p.m., at Veterans’ Memorial Field, 311 Athol Rd.,

NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washing-ton County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores inWashington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in trans-portation are documented by period photographs and artifacts.Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers whoalso remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences.Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the ChamplainCanal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south toAlbany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved toaccommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways todispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included woodenboxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, nocorrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothingof plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and dis-tance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores

would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cartwith horse could be rented by an individual or small businessfrom a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoachescould carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and somemail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general storesprovided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stockingthe General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednes-days and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through No-vember. THE BATTLE OF BENNINGTON TO BECOMMEMORATED. The Battle of Bennington, fought onAugust 16, 1777, will be commemorated at the New York StateBennington Battlefield Historic Site on Friday, August 16, startingat 7:00 p.m. The ceremony will be conducted by members of Chapters of the Empire State Society Sons of the AmericanRevolution, The National Society Daughters of the AmericanRevolution and other local historic groups in cooperation with

the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and HistoricPreservation. The commemoration includes a wreath-layingceremony and a salute with a blackpowder cannon modeled onthe one from the Revolutionary War. The Commemoration of theBattle will continue on Saturday, August 17, from 10:00 a.m.until 5:00 p.m. with a display of art and other material related tothe American Revolution by members of the Sons of the AmericanRevolution and Daughters of the American Revolution. TheBattlefield is located on New York State Route 67, approximatelythree miles east of the intersection of New York State Routes 67and 22 in North Hoosick, New York. The Battle of Benningtonwas fought in the then area of Walloomsac, N.Y. and was asignificant victory for American forces. It paved the way for theimportant American victory in the Battle of Saratoga in Octoberof that year. The Battlefield site offers information about theBattle and wonderful views of the surrounding area. It is open tothe public, free.

RE: ORAL HISTORY PROJECT The Warren County HistoricalSociety will be conducting oral history interviews during the RuralHeritage Festival and Youth Fair at the Warren County Fairgroundsin Warrensburg, NY on August 10th. The Warren CountyHistorical Society is searching for individuals who would like to

participate and are specifically interest in talking with individualswho have some knowledge in three specific areas:· World War II Memories: We are looking for individuals whohave memories of The Home Front during WWII (1941-45). Doyou remember Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the election of 1944, andFDR’s death? Also do you remember V-E Day and V-J Day,rationing, victory gardens, movies, songs, etc.?· Fairs in Warren County: We are interested in talking withindividuals who remember the various County Fairs inWarrensburg – and perhaps other locations – through the 1960s.· Churches: We are looking for individuals who have an interestin the importance of churches in the development of a community.It would be especially interesting to learn why a particularcongregation formed in a particular community, and what influencethe peopleof the church had on the community, and the role of the

church in creating a gathering place for people to meet for social
