Geography• The Study of earth and of the ways

people live and work on it is known for “geography”.

•The word geography comes from the Greek word “geographia”

which means “a description of the

earth.”

The two main branches of Geography are:

•Human Geography•Physical Geography

Human Geography• Is the study of how people and their

activities vary from place to place. It encompasses political, economic, and cultural factors.

Physical Geography• Is the study of how Earth’s natural

features vary from place to place.

Geographers• are scientists who study the earth. • Their attention is focused on the

spaces that places occupy. • They also deal with location of the

places and their relationship to one other.

Five Themes of GeographyIt was developed by the

united States’ National Council for the Social

studies.

Five Themes of GeographyLocation

LocationMeans where something is.

Absolute Location is important factor in studying a place. To determine absolute location, geographers use a network of imaginary lines around the earth.

Equator• Is an important

imaginary line that circles the earth midway between north pole and south pole.

Northern Hemispher

e• includes all of the land and water between the equator and the North Pole.

Southern Hemispher

e• includes all of the land and water between the equator and the South Pole.

•Geographer study the location and distribution of almost everything on the surface of the earth. One could easily locate a place by using the lines of latitude and longitude.

Latitude• Is made of horizontal

lines on a map or globe that measures the distance north or south of the Equator.

•Geographer consider the two lines of latitude as important indicators. • The Tropic of Cancer• The Tropic of Capricorn

The Tropic of Cancer

• Which is located at 23

The Tropic of Capricorn• Which is located at 23

Are vertical lines that measure the distance east and west of the prime meridian.

Absolute Location• The lines of latitude and longitude cross one another, forming a pattern called a grid system.

• This system is formed by lines of latitude and longitude that make it possible to find the absolute or exact location of a place. By using degrees and minutes, one can pinpoint the precise spot where one line of latitude crosses one line of longitude.

Relative Location• Is a way of locating a place in

relation to other places. • The distance between meridians is measured in degrees-the same as the distance between lines of latitude.

• The location of a place using the grid of longitude and latitude is known as ABSOLUTE LOCATION.• RELATIVE LOCATION is

important in understanding historical events. Relative location refers to the relationship of one place to another.

Place• This refers to the physical and

human characteristics of specific location. The physical setting of an area, its landforms, climate and resources are aspects of a place.

• It can be described in terms of its land, water, weather, soil, and plant and animal life.

Human-Environment Interaction• Geographers have been

trying to understand the relationship of places on earth to people and to other places. All places have advantages and disadvantages.

• People attract people for different reasons. It could be the ocean, a river, or a lake. Some may be attracted to sunny areas.

• Geographer are interested in the people’s way of adapting to their environment, like wearing light clothing in hot places and warm clothing in cold places. People changed their environment, like building an irrigation system to change a dessert into a farmland.

Movement• Movement in geography has

made a special impact in history because of the people’s way of living and the transfer of goods or ideas from one community to another.

• Movement has now become a daily part of our lives. People used automobiles, buses, subways, and commuter trains to move from one place to the other.

• The movement of people caused the movement of goods, information, and ideas. People are interdependent, relying on each other for goods, services and ideas.

Region• Geographers and historians

used the word “region” to refer an area with definite character.

• A region may be defined by it’s physical characteristics such a s land type, or plant and animal life.

Geographers also divide the world into regions based on human characteristics such as :• Politics• Region• Language• Economics
