My friend Mark went to his fishing buddy’s funeral and sat next to his widow Janet. At a quiet moment toward the end of the

service, Mark asked Janet if he could say a word. She agreed. He stood up and said “plethora” and sat down. Janet put her hand on his arm and said, “Thanks. That means a lot.” It takes a plethora of people to make OLLI what it is. And they each give “a lot.” OLLI teachers share their profession or their passion, and they do it for NOT “a lot” of money (free). That is what keeps OLLI alive, fresh and enlightening. Our Education Committee juggles “a lot” of teachers, topics and classroom slots to provide a plethora of choices for our members each term. OLLI Governing Council and committee members share their wisdom and insights to assure OLLI’s soundness and progress into the future. Our technical people did “a lot” to make on-line classes a reality and keep the learning going for “a lot” of students in spite of the Covid restrictions. The OLLI staff made a plethora of things happen without sharing office space. They transitioned to phones and emails to coordinate work from home and assured that we did not lose even one of our terms. OLLI marches on. Last but not least, OLLI students gave “a lot” of support and encouragement to the changes we made in the last year and a half. Many (not “a lot”) in-person classes are now returning to the campus and other locations. Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of OLLI is that OLLI members make “a lot” of new friends as they learn “a lot” about “a lot” of topics. I have met, and been helped by a plethora of good people in my six years editing The SUN. Other priorities require my time now so I am resigning from my position with OLLI. This is my last column. I hope that each of you know that you are essential parts of OLLI and continue your support. Thank you for making me feel at home with OLLI. I will see you again.

es - we are looking for a leader to fill this position. The Communications Editor is also a member of the Gov-

erning Council and attends monthly meet-ings. This might be the time for a 2 person team to take on the SUN publication! Your experience might be in writing or it could be in organizing stories, coming up with the layout or creating art work. The OLLI staff has experience in creating the booklet - assistance is needed with content and keeping the timeline in place. Contact Becky if more info is needed.

room 101 is hanging by a slender thread and dependent on the ever vigilant services of Carl Curtis. We will need to raise significant funds in order to put our finances in good order. To quote Mr. Micawber from Charles Dicken’s David Copperfield...“Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditures nineteen pounds, nineteen shillings and six pence, results happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditures twenty pounds, ought and six, results misery.”

In addition to our new hybrid system, we will also be celebrating our 25th Anniversary on January 9, 2022 at the Pointe events center in the Pyramid. We have many reasons to be proud of our first 25 years of OLLI at CSULB. One of the focal points of that celebration will be our very own Sylvia Manheim. She was one of the original founders of the Senior University at CSULB back in 1996. I hope that all of you plan to attend that festive event. We have much to be thankful for as we head into the holiday season 2021-2022. The newly elected Governing Council is energized and confident that OLLI at CSULB will be a big success. The one key ingredient that is needed is YOU. We need your participation and contributions to put us over the top.LET’S DO THIS TOGETHER

The OLLI school year is well underway both in person and on Zoom. We are adapting to the COVID rules of engagement, with the vast majority of our in person

attendees fully vaccinated and wearing masks while indoors at classes. It is heartening to see familiar faces and hear distinct voices despite the myriad of masks making many of

us difficult to recognize. We are slowly winning the war against this ever-changing virus but will need to continue to play by the rules of science and common sense. The COVID pandemic has certainly resulted in the creation of a new way of life. Our social and business interactions have changed

dramatically in the past two years. Not all of the changes have been for the better. We still need in person human interaction. OLLI at CSULB has tried to respond to these changes in a positive manner. The introduction of remote learning via Zoom has been well received by many of our members. Zoom is likely to be in the OLLI repertoire for the foreseeable future. We are investing in a hybrid system of communication with our members to maximize our ability to reach all of them regardless of how they want to attend classes. The hybrid system is expensive but deemed necessary after extensive review by our technical committee lead by our webmaster Ed Dignan. Our existing audio-visual system in

During this time of pandemic, many of us have been gathering on Zoom. We are now com-ing back to “in-person” classes while observing

pandemic protocols, but there are others in our com-munity who, without wifi or internet capability, have remained isolated for almost 2 years. We are interested in seeing if there are any in our OLLI community who would be willing to reach out to someone who is as yet unable to participate in OLLI. We'd like to try reaching out by making occasional tele-phone contact with people and helping them to feel a part of the greater community. Running into some-

one in the hallway, or visiting over a cup of coffee in the cafeteria, has long been an invaluable part of the community-building that is OLLI. Even under these reduced circumstances, we would like to see our com-munity maintained. A personal contact through the telephone can really help! If you feel this is something you are will-ing and able to do, please contact Becky or Lee in the office (562-985-8237) , and we will see about matching you with an isolated community member. Please also let us know of anyone who needs a friendly call!

OLLI On the Road Again by Barry Bosscher

“ Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” — Mary Ritter Beard, historian

In December, 2019, OLLI sponsored a trip to Riverside’s Mission Inn to view the beautiful holiday lights. Little did we know at the time

that would be the last OLLI trip for two years. The Travel Committee has been succesful orga-nizing another trip this year! The travel company OLLI uses, Good Times Travel, has been offering both day and multi-day trips since this past summer. They are doing so with strict COVID 19 guidelines and protocol. You may visit their website for more information. Due to the popularity of the 2019 Mission Inn trip, which quickly sold out, we have again sched-uled a trip with Good Times Travel to the Mission Inn for December 16. This, of course, is subject to COVID conditions. Good Times will shortly be taking reservations for the trip. We are confirmed for a full bus of 54 passen-gers. A restaurant has been reserved. Because there are

several multi day trips over that period, the agency has finally been able to find a trip leader for us. They will prepare a flyer for us as soon as everything is con-firmed. Look for an email or notice about the trip.

Get in the Holiday mood!

OLLI in the New Year Increasing Our Diversity One of the challenges OLLI faces in the new-year is to increase our diversity. Long Beach is a very diverse community – as is CSULB; how-ever, the OLLI demographics do not reflect that diversity well. What can we do to change that? How do we better attract – and meet the needs of – Asians, Hispanics, People of Color? We can start by having a conversation. If you are interested in being part of a study group to address this need, please contact Becky or Lee in the OLLI office or send an email to [email protected]. Contributed by Carolyn Estrada.

Improving Your Windows Skills This class is for Windows users who want to know how to get the most out of their computer’s operating system. It will review where your Windows computer puts your photos and documents, how to back up your computer and keep it safe from viruses and malware, and how to sync data. The class will include a discussion of the new Windows operating system, Windows 11.

New Tech Classes for Winter 2022

In the last few years you may have seen people using small cameras that were mounted on helmets or bikes or even on dogs. These action cameras can

take videos of someone riding down a hill, walking through the woods or a variety of other activities. This

term Perla Gutierrez’s Shoot and Edit Videos class will be expanded to include action cameras, like GoPros. You’ll learn what they are used for and how to use them to shoot videos.

Chris Wisniewski is offering a short course with

three new topics: Apple Shortcuts, Automation, and

Focus Mode on your Apple Devices. Apple Short-cuts let you automate actions that usually take several or more steps and makes it take just one. You might make a shortcut that lets several people know that you’re running late for a weekly event, or one that opens a music playlist with one tap. The options are endless. You'll also learn how to customize the new Focus mode.

Computer Security and Password Management Workshop Are you one of those people who have your online passwords written on little pieces of paper that are scattered around your computer or tucked into a small notebook? Or maybe you use the same short pass-word for most of the web sites you visit? Using a pass-word manager makes it safer to go online because they generate a random and long password for each web site you visit. All you have to remember is just one master password. In his new three-week workshop-Chris will tell you how password managers work, how to choose a good one, how to get start-ed, then guide you through the process. The workshop will also include how to use the new Focus mode.

Getting Away from the CSULB Campus We are very thankful to have developed good community locations for OLLI classes. When the music makers wanted to continue through the pan-demic days, they found a spot outdoors at Recreation Park. The Jam session and the Guitar II class meet

there weekly. The Recorder class also meets at Whaley Park. For now we are waiting to schedule at the Pine Ave. classroom.

Our 5 Week Short Story class led by Mona Panitz has found a home at the Alpert Jewish Com-munity Center. They are enjoying the safe and cozy Boardroom to hold their discussions.

The new location at St. Isidore Historical Plaza now is home to the Longevity Stick, Tai Chi Chih and a few other classes. Try out a Ballet Folklorico class which has found a very appropriate setting for Winter. Yes - the Parking can be better at these off-campus locations. We hope you will still attend classes on campus when the topic entices you to come back "home" .

OLLI in-person again

This warning comes form the university IT division. It’s good information for all of us.

Phishing is one of the primary methods cybercrimi-nals use to obtain your login credentials and per-sonal information to commit fraudulent activities.

Here are common tips for detecting phishing email.• Don’t always trust the display name. Just because it says it is coming from a name of a person you know or trust does not mean that it is. Double check the email address and en-sure that it is a valid address from a known person. • Be skeptical of urgent, enticing, and alarming content with potential consequences. Emails that create urgency, fear, or threats are usually fake. The purpose is to intimidate you into responding or acting quickly without thinking.• Don’t respond to unsolicited requests for personal infor-mation. Any emails asking to enter or verify personal de-tails or bank/credit card information should be treated with extreme caution.• Don’t immediately follow an unknown link to a website. Emails that provide no content, but a simple button push-ing you to an unfamiliar website should raise a red flag.• Don’t be fooled by short links. Short links are dangerous and don’t reveal the actual website making it easy to hide suspicious URLs.• Beware of emails regarding money. Large financial rewards are often too good to be true. Similarly, do not fall for emails requesting money or payment or to purchase “gift cards.”• Look out for greetings that are generic and vague such as, “To whom it may concern,” “Hello there,” or “Valued customer.”• Closely review the email signature. Check to make sure it is signed by the same person as the Sender or “From” address.• Pay attention to poor grammar and punctuation. Legitimate business emails are usually professionally writ-ten and contain little or no grammar mistakes.• When in doubt, research and contact the company or source directly. It is best to always confirm the legitimacy of the email communication before taking any action.

Thanks to Kathy Winkenwerder and the CSULB IT department for the hints!

Jerome LoebMay 21, 1928 – September 23, 2021 Jerome Loeb, age 93, of Long Beach, California passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2021. Jerome was born May 21, 1928.Jerry was a long time member of OLLI and a strong supporter of the arts and activities at CSULB. Along with his wife Flora, they were front row attendees of the Shakespeare class and enjoyed many other OLLI adventures. They supported music programs and were the first on class at any Opera programs. Flora passed 3 years ago and Jerry missed his partner more than we knew. They will both be missed at OLLI.

"I've enjoyed every age I've been and each has had its own individual merit. Every laugh line, every scar, is a badge I wear to show I've been pres-ent, the inner rings of my per-sonal tree trunk that I display proudly for all to see. Nowa-days, I don't want a "perfect" face and body; I want to wear the life I've lived." (even in this Zoom era)- Pat Benatar, Between a Heart and a Rock Place: A Memoir

Do you believe in volunteers? We do! Volunteers are the heart and soul of OLLI at CSULB, and we are looking for someone to be their leader and advocate.

We have over 150 volunteers at OLLI, and we never want them to think they are less than essential. There are positions currently open for volunteers on the Membership Working Group, the Communica-tions team either as SUN Editor or staff, and also supporting the Educa-

tion Working Group with planning for classes and scheduling them. Most groups meet monthly to look at the services or activities that might be needed for members. Duties could also include partici-pation on the Governing Council of OLLI. Now’s the time to step up and help us support our OLLI activities through volunteers.

If you are you interested, or know someone who might be, contact the OLLI office at (562) 985-8237.

The war between Germany and the USSR was the largest conflict in World War II and resulted in approximately 39 million civilian and military dead and the destruction of most of central and eastern Europe and the western region of the Soviet Union. Does the Opera Chorus Get Accolades too?

presented by

Larry Verdugo, LA Opera community Educator

Attending the opera brings the pleasures of hearing mag-nificent singers and being

thrilled by conductors who can whip up incitement and unite an ensemble with riveting precision. But sharing and, perhaps, filling the stage with excite-ment is the chorus, the voice of the people who rebel, welcome, celebrate, party, suffer, debate, pray or simply observe the action, providing tension and a dramatic sweep a soloist can’t always do alone. But in the wake of the soloists shattering high notes and tearful finales, the audience should also leave the opera house feeling the vital presence of the chorus and its contri-bution to a thrilling evening.

Celebrate with OLLI

Now more than ever OLLI needs your help. Did you know that over 55% of our

new members have told us that they were referred by a friend? We appre-ciate those referrals very much. We count on membership fees and class tuition to support the program each session. Consider referring a friend to OLLI in 2022. An annual membership might be a great Holiday gift and is only $40. Please share The SUN with your friends. In its digital version, it makes it easy to email to someone you know. A printed version can be mailed if you contact the office. Invite friends to join OLLI so they can also experience the joy of learning. We like to say that at OLLI you will Learn More ~ Age Less!

Mark your 2022 calendar for the January 9 celebration of our 25 years! Look for details in the SUN and in newsletters from OLLI. You can al-ways find more information on the website too. www.csulb.edu/olli
