Before being elected Mayor, I served on several City boards and commissions, and became the � rst African-American Chairman of the Board for the Bessemer Area Chamber of Commerce. DISTRICT 1-DAVID VANCE
David Vance is serving in his � rst term as representative for District 1. Vance is a graduate of John Carroll High School and Xavier University of New Orleans, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science.
Vance is an eight year veteran of the U.S. Army, a former state probation and parole o� cer and served formerly as a YMCA Youth Program Coordinator.
His community involvement has included membership in the NAACP, services on boards for Always Reaching Children (ARC) and Neighborhood of Winners (NOW), and a� ending church and neighborhood meetings. He also enjoys mentoring youth.

Chester W. Porter is serving in his � rst term as representative for District 2. Porter is a graduate of Hueytown High School. He has a� ended Je� erson State Community College and Jacksonville State University. He also a� ended Real Estate School at RealtySouth.
Porter is currently an Operations Specialist in the Corporate Information
Systems for Coca Cola United.
His community involvement has included being an active member of the Carver Civic League, founder of the 13th Educational Enrichment Program (EEP) and an advisory board member for the FBI Multicultural Board. He is a member of New Pilgrim Baptist Church.

DISTRICT 3-SARAH BELCHER
Sarah Belcher is serving her � � h term on the Bessemer City Council, having � rst been elected in 1994. Belcher is a graduate of Wenonah High School and a� ended State Vocational/Technical School, now known as Lawson Sate Community College, and Miles College.
She is a retired nurse having worked at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital,
St. Vincent’s Hospital and the former Lloyd Noland Hospital in Fair� eld.
Belcher is a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where she is president of the Usher Board and works on various church commi� ees. She has a long record of community involvement including having been a member and ambassador for the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce and serving on boards of the Bessemer Advocacy Center and the Red Cross, among others.

Donna � igpen is serving her � rst term as representative for District 4. � igpen is a graduate of Oak Grove High School and a� ended Je� erson State Community College and Bessemer State Community College, now Lawson State’s Bessemer Campus. She is a realtor with RE/MAX Advantage in McCalla.
� igpen is an active member of Canaan Baptist Church on Morgan Road in Bessemer. Her community involvement includes service with the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce, Bessemer Board of Realtors, Birmingham Board of Realtors, Birmingham Chapter of Women’s Council of Realtors (president in 2011) and the Southeast Bessemer Neighborhood Association.

Jesse Ma� hews is serving his fourth term as representative for District 6. Ma� hews is a graduate of Hueytown High School and a� ended Lawson State Community College, Bessemer State Community College and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
He is currently employed by Alabama Power Company.
His community involvement includes serving with the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce and the Concerned Citizens of Bessemer. He is also a member of New Bethlehem Baptist Church where he serves as a deacon and youth advisor.

Cleophus King is serving in his � rst term as the representative for District 7. King is the youngest person to be elected to the Bessemer City Council and is the current Council president pro-tem.
King is a product of the Bessemer City Schools System and is currently enrolled in the University of Phoenix, where he is majoring in Business Management. He is a licensed funeral director.
His community involvement includes serving as a member of Bessemer Citizens for Change, the NAACP, Brothers in Christ and 100 Black Men. King is also president of the Bessemer Library Board.

Chamber Ambassadors Are Ready� e Bessemer Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors is a group of dedicated local volunteer leaders who are always ready to serve as the vital public relations arm of the Chamber, representing the Chamber at public events and as the backbone of the Membership enhancement and retention programs. � ey are available to help our business, education, and civic groups with their public events.
Ambassadors are individuals who are motivated, enthusiastic, and articulate. � ey are prepared to meet with visitors, local businesses, and various forms of the media. Each volunteer possesses excellent leadership qualities and represent with pride the Chamber and their employing business. Ambassadors make a daily commitment, promote Bessemer with con� dence, and invest their time in the area. Not only their time but Ambassadors are ready with ideas, positive outlooks, networking skills, and various individual talents. � ey are a TEAM representing the best of Bessemer.
� ey are the key resource in extending hospitality in the Bessemer area and are experienced in business, community, and promotional arenas. In order to serve as an Ambassador, the volunteer must be a member of the Chamber or employed by a member business, meet minimum expectations, and be ready to participate in the various Chamber programs and events.
Annual goals of the Bessemer Chamber Ambassadors include: sponsor PRIDE activities, support educational e� orts in local schools selecting two to directly support, raise funds for scholarships, be personally involved in networking at all Chamber events, be hosts/hostesses for all Chamber events, recruit sponsors and new members of the Chamber and its programs, and be there at groundbreaking/ribbon cu� ing/grand openings. � e Chamber Ambassador is ready to work for Bessemer and to help you be ready to do business here.

Nestled in the lower foothills of the Appalachian range lies Jones Valley. Distributed throughout this area was black gold – no, not the liquid kind, but rich seams of coal. � e ingredients for an industrial iron and steel making center, which would rival any in the United States, were in close proximity - iron ore, coal, and limestone. Rail lines crossed the area thereby providing easy movement of raw materials, people, and � nished products. A city called Birmingham was emerging and blast furnaces were do� ing the landscape.
Armed with a vision, a blueprint of a well laid out city to be called Brooklyn, and investors with at least $100,000 each, Henry Fairchild DeBardeleben (son-in-law of Alabama’s � rst millionaire Daniel Pra� ) embarked on his mission. On April 12, 1887 the � rst lots were sold, totaling more than $400,000 by the close of the day—the City of Bessemer was born! Henry had changed the name to something more appropriate for iron making (Sir Henry Bessemer in England had invented the Bessemer converter which changed the iron/steel making process). By the end of the � rst year, Bessemer’s population had grown so rapidly, the town was dubbed “� e Marvel City”.

Construction of roads, houses, churches, and businesses to meet the needs of the workers and the new residents was started in earnest. � e young town of Bessemer also bragged of � e Hotel Montezuma; dismantled and shipped by rail to Bessemer, this building was actually the Mexican Exhibit at the1884-1885 New Orleans Exposition. DeBardeleben even had the forethought to care for future generations by establishing a park in the downtown area. Today, an original Viquesney Dough Boy Statue which honors those who paid the ultimate price in World War I is the focal point of DeBardeleben Park.
A local newspaper of 1900 predicted that by the year 2000, the city of Bessemer would stretch 100 miles. By the 1920s Bessemer ranked the fourth largest city in Alabama and persisted in ful� lling that earlier newspaper prediction.
Life continued in Bessemer. A search through old Bessemer newspapers reiterates the fact that history repeats itself with each generation. Newspapers reported good news, bad news, and a lot of advertisement; today television and other electronic devices provide the same type of information. Births, deaths, and weddings occurred; the � u bug seemed to transcend the years; accidents happened; elections were held; government o� cials were at odds; businesses came and went.
Over the years, however, poor leadership at local, state, and national levels brought recessions, depressions, and other economic woes to Bessemer. Fires destroyed many early landmarks, while heavy reliance on a few industries brought economic downturns as more jobs were outsourced and demands for some products dwindled or disappeared.Tannehill Valley: Covered Bridge

By the 1980s, Bessemer had reached 33% unemployment. Diversi� cation of industry became the buzz word for survival. And diversify she did! New industry was recruited and small businesses were encouraged to grow. Jobs returned and the city once again began recovery from yet another recession.

In 1973, Medical West became part of the Carraway system and was renamed Bessemer Carraway. In 2002, the hospital became UAB Medical West when it joined the UAB Health System. During the last one hundred and � � y years no community in the southern part of the United States has relied more on industrial production than the Birmingham-Bessemer Alabama region. It truly has been the lifeblood for growth for the entire region. And to a lesser degree that is still true however there has been great diversi� cation of the workforce in recent years. Currently the strongest industrial and distribution growth numbers are in the West Je� erson County/Bessemer area. � is growth is based on a number factors including: many available sites, existing buildings, utilities on site, great transportation access, a high quality work force, excellent labor-management relations with existing industries, very reasonable cost of doing business and most importantly very pro-business oriented governments.
� ere are presently thirteen industrial/business parks located
within ten miles of each other in the Bessemer area. � e parks range in size from 9 acres to 740 acres and are very diversi� ed, and eleven of these parks are owned by private owners or by the city of Bessemer and have space available for upscale o� ce operations, warehouse-distribution facilities and heavy and light manufacturing. Many of the parks have rail access.
In addition, the Je� erson County Economic Development Authority ( JCEIDA) maintains and operates two large parks in the Bessemer area. � e JCEIDA properties, known as Je� Met, are � rst class operations that have a high quality clientele. Companies such as Home Depot, Mercedes Benz, Wells Fargo and Blue Cross-Blue Shield call Je� Met home. Of the two JCEIDA parks, Je� Met Lakeshore is primarily an o� ce oriented data center site with approximately 120 acres available for development.
