WEEKLY RESOURCES Sunday, March 4 New Creation Kids (NCK) is a ministry of Gulf Coast Community Church New Scripture Memory Program See page 2 for details. Jesus Was Anointed This week we start a new unit, Jesus Saves as we prepare for Easter. We will start out in Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; and John 12:1-8. Each of these accounts notes Jesus’ anointing six days before Passover. Jesus was in Bethany, eating supper at Simon the leper’s house. Since lepers were social outcasts, Simon may have been healed from his leprosy by Jesus. Jesus and His disciples attended the supper, as did Jesus’ friends Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. While Jesus was reclining at the table, Mary broke open an expensive alabaster jar of pure nard, a fragrance imported from India. Alabaster was an expensive form of marble. Alabaster jars were intricately crafted and sealed so that to open the jar, the owner would have to break it, and the perfumes or oils within the jar would be used immediately. Mary could not pour out a little bit of the nard and keep the rest for herself. Out of sincere and total devotion, Mary poured all of the nard onto Jesus. In stark contrast to Mary’s display of love, Judas Iscariot reacted with indignation. In Matthew’s account, the other disciples also wondered why Mary had not sold the nard—worth about a worker’s yearly wage—and given it to the poor. John states that Judas was not altruistic; Judas was in fact pilfering money from Jesus’ ministry. (See John 12:6.) “Leave her alone,” Jesus said. “She has kept it for the day of My burial” (John 12:7). The disciples would have plenty of time to minister to the poor, but Jesus would die in less than a week. Mary probably had no way of knowing what her offering of love and devotion would have signified, but Jesus said that from that moment on, people would remember what she had done for Him. Unlike the rich young ruler who thought the cost of following Christ was too high (Mark 10:22), Mary believed that Jesus holds more value than costly perfume. Mary’s actions were not wasteful but worshipful. By allowing Mary to anoint Him, Jesus showed that He is more valuable than anything. Jesus knew He would soon die for sinners, be buried, and rise from the dead on the third day. Those who trust in His death and resurrection will receive eternal life. This is the BEST NEWS EVER! New Scripture Memory Program

See page 2 for details.

(See John 12:6.)

“Leave her alone,” Jesus said.

New Scripture Memory Program Our new program will focus on the Gospel Project curriculum's unit verses. This will give our kids several weeks to memorize the unit verse and allowing NCK volunteers to teach the verse within the context of the lesson. Our curriculum is set up in four quarters: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Each quarter is divided into units which typically span four to five lessons but can be as short as three. Attached are the Spring quarter’s verses. It also includes the lesson titles, the unit Christ Connection and description, and the unit verse in scriptural context so you’ll know what your kids are learning.

We will also send scripture cards home with the kids at the beginning of each unit, so be sure to check their take-home bags. We are also working on a reward system to encourage the kids and will share details soon.

If you are not currently attending church in person and would like your children to participate in the program, email me at [email protected] when you child(ren) have memorized a verse and I’ll make sure they receive a prize!

Did you know we have an NCK Facebook page? (Click here.) It is a private group, so the first time you visit the page you’ll have to wait until our administrator gives you access—normally within 24 to 48 hours. You can find the verse along with a weekly resource pack that includes a summary of the lesson, a read-out-loud Bible Story, discussion questions, and activity and coloring pages. You'll also find links to the weekly video. We post and email the resource pack out every Friday.

4/04 Jesus Crucifixion and Resurrection Christ Connection: God’s plan for redemption is fulfilled through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ Unit Description: God’s plan for redemption, which began before creation, culminates with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus was welcomed as King but less than one week later was crucified by the people. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection made it possible for people to have a pure relationship with God. Romans 6:6-9 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be rendered powerless so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, 7 since a person who has died is freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him, 9 because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over him.

Title Bible Story Matthew 26:6-‐13; Mark 14:3-‐9; John 12:1-‐8 Read the bolded text for younger kids.

The time was coming to celebrate the Passover. Every year, the Jewish people gathered together to remember a special event that happened long ago. When God’s people were slaves in Egypt, God did great things to rescue His people. God showed the pharaoh that He is in charge, and the pharaoh let God’s people go. God had used Moses to lead His people out of Egypt and to the promised land. God did not want the people to forget that time, so every year, the Jews had a feast. Many Jews traveled to Jerusalem to get ready for the special time. Six days before the Passover feast began, Jesus went to the town of Bethany. Bethany was near Jerusalem, and Jesus’ friend Lazarus lived there with his sisters, Mary and Martha. Lazarus was the man Jesus had raised from the dead. Jesus went to His friend Simon’s house for a meal. Jesus was reclining at the table when Mary, Lazarus’s sister, came to Him. She had a jar of very expensive oil. The oil smelled good, like a perfume. Mary broke open the jar and poured the oil on Jesus’ head. Jesus’ disciples were very upset! They thought Mary had wasted the expensive oil. The oil was worth 300 denarii—about a year’s pay. One of the disciples, Judas Iscariot, said, “She could have sold the oil for a lot of money, and then she could have given the money to the poor!” Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor; he said it because he loved money. In fact, he was a thief. They told Mary that she had done the wrong thing, but Jesus spoke up. “Leave her alone,” He said. “She has done a very good thing for Me.” Then Jesus explained, “You will always have people around you who are poor, but you will not always have Me. Mary has poured oil on My body to get it ready for burial.” Jesus said that wherever the gospel was told in the whole world, people would also hear about Mary and what she had done. Christ Connection: Pouring the very expensive oil on Jesus was not a waste, it was worship. By allowing Mary to anoint Him, Jesus showed that He is more valuable than anything. Jesus knew He would soon die for sinners, be buried, and rise from the dead on the third day.

Key Passage: Romans 6:9 … because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over him.

Big Picture Question: Preschool: What does it mean to honor Jesus? Honoring Jesus means to treat Him with respect.

Elementary: What did Mary show by pouring oil on Jesus? Jesus deserves to be honored and worshiped.

Bible Story Review Preschool/Kindergarten 1. What was Jesus doing at Simon’s house? (eating a meal) 2. Who came to Simon’s house with a jar of expensive oil? (Mary) 3. What did Mary do to Jesus? (Mary anointed Jesus.) 4. Who thought Mary had done a silly thing? (Jesus’ friends) 5. What did Jesus say about Mary anointing Him? (“She has done a very

good thing for Me.”) 6. What does it mean to honor Jesus? Honoring Jesus means to treat

Him with respect.

Elementary Kids 1. In what city did today’s Bible story happen? (Bethany, Matt. 26:6) 2. Jesus was at whose house? (Simon’s house, Matt. 26:6) 3. What did the woman pour on Jesus? (very expensive, fragrant oil; Matt.

26:7) 4. Why were Jesus’ disciples upset? (They thought she wasted the oil, Matt.

26:8) 5. What did Judas say Mary should have done with the oil? (sold it and given

the money to people who are poor, Matt. 26:9) 6. Why wasn’t Jesus upset with Mary? (Jesus said she had done a good

thing, Matt. 26:10) Additional discussion questions. 7. Mary could have sold the oil and used the money to help people who are

poor. Why do you think Jesus said Mary had done the right thing by pouring oil on Him instead?

8. Jesus said Mary anointed Him for burial. What was going to happen to Jesus? 9. Why should Jesus be our greatest treasure? 10. How can we show our love for Jesus?

Christ Connection God’s plan for redemption is

fulfilled through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Mary anointed Jesus with her most expensive oil.

Mary worshiped Him. Jesus is most important, and He deserves to be worshiped. Jesus knew that He was going to die to rescue people from sin. He would be buried and then rise from the dead.

Jesus is Anointed** arms out like a cross every time you say Jesus** point up every time you say God** hug self each time you say love

One day Jesus was invited to a special party.

A woman who wasn't invited came to the party. She knew that Jesus

is the Forever King (put on a pretend crown) and she wanted to

worship Him.

The women bent down in front of Jesus. She started crying (wipe

your eyes) because she knew that she was a sinner (arms in front of

face) and she was sorry for her sins. She cried on Jesus’ feet and then

wiped His feet with her hair. Then she poured perfume on His feet. All

of these things showed how much she loved Jesus.

Jesus told her that she was forgiven of her sin (arms in front of face).

Jesus had made her clean from her sin.
