“Honestly, I was kind of surprised by my emotional reaction to it,” said Russo. “It really did mean a lot.

“Back years ago, I had a nicer sized stable. It was mostly claimers, but they were some good horses, and the barn was running well and showing good results. The problem is that it was expensive to run the barn the way I was running it and to continue to get results. It was basically where my barn was operating under water and it just wasn’t working, so I downsized. From there, I was working for Jenn and Joe Bongiorno for a while, and I was working outside the business as well to make sure that I could handle my personal and family commitments while still keeping a foothold here until I got another opportunity to put some more horses in the barn.”

After reduced starts in 2018 and 2019, Russo was poised to start anew heading into 2020. But like many others, he was dramatically impacted by the pandemic. Horses that Russo had either just recently acquired or had just recently trained back down had their routines thrown off by the ups and downs of the disruption and not knowing when racing would resume. Even in that interrupted year where Russo notes in retrospect he may have done things differently, he still posted a more typical number of 181 starts.

Perhaps snake bitten of sorts through recent years off the track as well as on the track going back to his Prospector Hanover being interfered with in the 2000 Woodrow Wilson, “The majority of the emotional aspect of that race was mostly all the work that goes into getting to that point,” said Russo. “I’ve been programmed to be disappointed in these races. I’ve been in a few races for that type of money, and I’ve been third in almost all of them and had shots to win but never this strong of a chance with Voukefalas. These opportunities don’t happen every year and to win one of those, it’s a great thing.”

Jordan Stratton has driven Voukefalas in every start since the colt’s second baby race, and despite a 1 for 41 record as a driver at the Meadowlands heading into last Friday, his drive in the NJSS final was flawless.

“I didn’t for one second have a discussion with Jordan about the race,” said Russo. “He told me the week before that the others can’t beat him in the final (a race where he overcame trouble and closed in :25.1). He knew what he wanted to do and so there was nothing for me to say to him. And he did absolutely the right thing; he put the horse in the spot you need to be in.”

In that race, Stratton moved Voukefalas to the front in a race where the half mile was posted in :54.1 When Tetrick popped the two-hole early with race favorite Lifes A Puzzle, the three-quarter time came up in 1:22.3.

“The fractions were something that because he hadn’t done it on the front end previously they were something that I noticed, but in reality – and I mean this with the utmost respect – when that horse pulled the two-hole at the five-eighths I knew the race was over because that’s all my colt needed to let him know

that it was time to race. That doesn’t mean that the other horse couldn’t have gone by, but Voukefalas is very good and he wants to pass horses and he wants to fight them off. I felt very good about the way my colt was going to respond.

“When Jordan qualified him for me in his second baby race – and not because the horse won – the horse has very strong pull and he wants to do things whether you want him to or not. And Jordan has a very soft pair of hands, and he was kind of able to make the horse do what he wanted instead. When I saw that qualifier, I knew that Jordan would be a great driver for him. And he made it known that he wanted to drive the colt and that he was possibly going to have to pass a drive in the Yonkers Trot to drive him in the first NJSS leg. He never wavered about wanting to drive the horse, and to have a guy that believes in the horse – Jordan makes plenty of money at Yonkers and doesn’t need to shoot over to the Meadowlands for one race — but for him to believe in the colt and want to be associated with him, that was more than fine for me.”

Another element of the personally and professionally gratifying win for Russo, is that he picked out — as a $11,000 bargain 3-year-old and — campaigned and later bred the dam of Voukefalas, Inittowinafortune, at sale in 2013 for owner Pagonas.  Inittowinafortune earned just shy of $700,000 between 2012 and 2018, including a mark of 1:49.3 taken at the Meadowlands during her 5-year-old season.

Inittowinafortune’s first foal was a filly born in 2019 (American Ideal), which preceded by one year Voukefalas in 2020.

“I first bred her to American Ideal because of American Jewel; very similar breeding,” said Russo. “Inittowinafortune is by Cam’s Fortune, who is a full brother to Camluck. And American Jewel was an American Ideal out of a Camluck mare. So, that’s why I bred her to American Ideal the first time. And that horse, Artemida, is a sweetheart of a filly but unfortunately is very small and got too weak last year and we had to stop with her.

“When they brought Lazarus to New Jersey, I felt good about him.  I was a little apprehensive just because I had never seen him in person and got mixed reviews about his size. But Bettor’s Delight is a great stallion, maybe the best ever. And I felt good knowing that in my back pocket I have a great mare whose strength was desire. She was a small mare, and

I knew her speed was going to eventually show up somewhere in her foals. Even if it didn’t work out the way that it did, we could have had the option to race against other Lazarus’ in a closed circuit in New Jersey where we could make some money for a couple of years.”

It remains to be seen how Voukefalas progresses from here, but Russo had been a believer in the horse long before last week.

“I’ve had this horse in training for eight months and I can’t explain how good of a horse he is,” said Russo. “He’s never even been beaten in a training mile and I’ve never put a whip on him. All I’ve done for eight months is try to go slower than he’s wanted to go. He’s an extremely fast horse. His class will be determined over the next year, but he’s an exceptionally fast horse.”

Voukefalas is entered Saturday in an Arden Downs stake at The Meadows as part of the Adios card.

Honestly, I was kind of surprised by my emotional reaction to it. It really did mean a lot.

On the fast trackRyan Napierala on maintaining The Meadowlands’ lightning fast oval.

by Debbie Little

Without the track, there’s no racing. And without The Meadowlands’ Ryan Napierala, there’s no track.

Napierala, director of racing properties and track, has been in charge of grooming the speedy mile oval for almost a decade and it’s a job he loves and, perhaps, was born to do.

Napierala, who turns 42 next week, was raised by his grandparents, Chuck and Sharon Sylvester, so he spent a lot of time learning the business from the Hall of Famer that he refers to as “dad” or “pops”.

“I’ve been going to The Meadowlands since he won his first Hambletonian [with Mack Lobell in 1987],” said Napierala.

I got good at it because I got tired of being yelled at, because bad tracks are out there. They’re a dime a dozen… I learned to get the rocks off the track and learned to make it springy, so the knees didn’t have fluid on them. I got insight from one of the best on what they want and then I just kind of ran with it. It’s tough when your dad’s Chuck Sylvester and he’s trying to show you something in harness racing. You better pay attention.

“Pops and Carl Allen helped me along the way a lot. And Clint Warrington. He was just a track wizard. He was absolutely one of the best.”

In the late 1990s, Sylvester owned and operated Magical Acres, a training facility in Chesterfield, NJ, where Napierala honed his skills.

Napierala remembers being 15 and in New Jersey for the summer to get his driver’s license.

“And pops said, ‘If you can’t drive a water truck, you can’t drive anything,’” said Napierala. “Then, I think he put me on a bulldozer out in the infield. I think we were digging out a pond. The equipment and all that is just natural to me and I kind of fell in love with it. It’s my niche.”

Rod Allen, Carl’s son, remembers being stabled at Magical Acres and Napierala being good natured.

“I don’t doubt that [my dad] put Ryan in the grater alongside him,” said Allen. “He just loved to run that machinery. He probably got more tutoring from my father because he did run a lot of heavy equipment and he put our own track in and he wasn’t shy about giving [Ryan] his opinion of how it should be, I do remember.”

By 19 or 20, Napierala was responsible for the track at Magical Acres.

“I got good at it because I got tired of being yelled at, because bad tracks are out there,” said Napierala. “They’re a dime a dozen.”

Sylvester was a visual teacher and would take Napierala to watch when the vet would draw fluid out of a horse’s knee,

Harness Racing Update

Harness Racing Update | Page 9 | July 29, 2022

which meant the track was too hard, or, he would have him look at a horse’s beat up feet to show there were rocks on the track.

“So, I learned to get the rocks off the track and learned to make it springy, so the knees didn’t have fluid on them,” said Napierala. “I got insight from one of the best on what they want and then I just kind of ran with it. It’s tough when your dad’s Chuck Sylvester and he’s trying to show you something in harness racing. You better pay attention.”

Trainer Noel Daley has been stabled at Magical Acres for quite a while and is currently in Sylvester’s original barn.

“[Ryan’s] actually got the right temperament for the job,” said Daley. “He might get the abuse but he doesn’t appear to worry about it. Horsemen aren’t afraid to express their opinion, so if you want to be a trackman, you need to have a thick skin. It’s good to see that he’s gone on with it and made something of it.”

This is definitely the busiest time of year for Napierala with the Meadowlands Pace just about two weeks ago and the Hambletonian a week from Saturday.

Unless you live close to The Meadowlands, you may not be aware of the deluge that happened between 2 and 3 p.m. on Pace Night, but Napierala remembers it well.

“We anticipated the rain, what we didn’t anticipate is that it was going to be four inches of rain in like an hour,” said Napierala. “When the rain’s that bad and it’s moving the material, the screens are catching it and pulling it over to the next little indent and if you do it enough then you take away the washouts. A lot of tracks have to stop to fix their washouts, which normally we don’t have to do, because the track’s that good. That afternoon, there were washouts over the entire track, which never happens.”

As the sun came out and the track started to dry, Napierala and his crew began to cut the track, reopening it, to give it a little cushion. And even though local weathermen were saying the rain was done, Napierala was wary.

“I check a million different things out there for weather, which I think is going to give me PTSD one day,” said Napierala. “There was more rain coming so I started retightening it but it was a good surface. It wasn’t too hard at all and kind of worked out to be really good and really fast.”

When it comes to Bulldog Hanover’s world record mile that night, Napierala gives credit where it’s deserved.

“People are like, oh it’s the dirt,” said Napierala. “The dirt is the dirt, it ain’t got nothing to do with it. There’s no motor in the dirt, the motor’s in the horse. The track was tight because we had rain in the area and it’s a fast track when it’s tight like that, but I don’t like to take anything away from that horse. He just did something that was next level.”

Hambletonian Day is too far away to know for certain what the weather will be, but no matter what happens, Napierala will be ready to roll.

“It is the hardest day by far because my guys start at 8 in the morning, because it is Hambo Day,” said Napierala. “There’s no other day in harness racing that matters that much. That’s the epitome of the sport. If we have to be there from 6 in the morning until 10 at night that day, it doesn’t matter, we’re there.”

Allen had a thought about Napierala’s chosen profession.

“The two worst jobs on the track or in harness racing is the trackman and the race secretary, because you can’t please everybody,” said Allen. “Whenever a horse goes lame, it’s always the track. It’s not that they’ve been trained too hard or they have the wrong shoes on, it was the track.”

When you consider how fast miles have been this year at The Meadowlands, at least in part, it was the track.

The stats, numbers and events that got us to the 97th Hambletonian – Part 1by Bob Heyden

1. Each of the last 12 Hambletonians has had at least one first-time Hambletonian driver. Lucas Wallin 28 and Mattias Melander 23 drove in the past two years.

2. The last eight Hambletonians have gone to four Swedes, three Canadians and one American-born trainer.

3.  Todd McCarthy can be #5 on the Hambletonian all-time list of Mc-winners if he is victorious this year. In 1931, Dick McMahon won with Calumet Butler. In 1992, Mickey McNichol won with Alf Palema. In 2019, Bob McClure with Forbidden Trade and in 2020 Andy McCarthy won with Ramona Hill.

4.  This year is the 10th anniversary of Linda Toscano and Tim Tetrick getting their first Hambletonian (Market Share). It is the 20th anniversary of Chuck Sylvester’s last Hambletonian (Chip Chip Hooray) and the 30th anniversary of Alf Palema the first ever Hambletonian winner with just a lone victory that year.

5. It’s been 34 years since any driver has won the Hambletonian consecutively — 1987-1988 John Campbell.

6.  The following 12 drivers have won a Meadowlands Hambletonian without ever being favored in any Hambletonian final: Scott Zeron (twice), Mickey McNichol, Roger Hammer, Bob McClure, Trevor Ritchie, George Brennan, Ulf Thoresen, Ben Webster, Bill Fahy, Ron Waples, Jack Moiseyev and Eric Ledford.

7. Eight is enough. Sires who have won multiple Hambletonians at the Meadowlands, are: Super Bowl (5), Muscles Yankee (3), Speedy Somolli (3), Valley Victory (2), Andover Hall (2), Pine Chip (2), Balanced Image (2) and Speedy Crown (2).

8.  Chapter Seven looks to be the third sire to win two Hambletonians — with a filly. He had Atlanta already and has Joviality S in this year. If so, he would join Stars Pride

(1958 with Emilys Pride and 1966 Kerry Way) as well as Peter Volo (1930 with Hanovers Bertha and 1932 with The Marchioness).

–9. Forty-one Meadowlands Hambletonians (18-of-41) have been sired by a Hambletonian winner.

10. Seven different years Tim Tetrick has won a Hambletonian elimination.

11. 1981 was the only year in Meadowlands Hambletonian history that trainer/drivers got all five checks: Ray Remmen, Howard Beissinger, Carl Allen, Archie McNeil and Mike Zeller.

12. Rebuff and Joviality. Never before have the two Hambletonian favorites been the two freshman Breeders Crown winners from the year prior. Note: 1988 was shaping up that way, but Valley Victory got a virus that ended his career and Peace Corps was short in the dead heat year.

13. Ake Svanstedt looks to join Per Eriksson and Jimmy Takter as Swedes with at least three Hambletonian credits.

14.  2022 is the 35th anniversary year of Takter’s Sir Taurus debut in the Hambletonian (no money).

15. Ray Schnittker remains the only driver to make over $1 million in purse money in his first three Hambletonian drives.

16.  Tim Tetrick (Rebuff) will become the first driver to compete in the Meadowlands Pace and the Hambletonian in the same year 16 straight times (2007-2022).

17. In 2006, the then fastest ever Hambletonian elim winner (Here Comes Herbie, 1:52) got no money in the final. In 2004, the dominant elim winner Tom Ridge, also got no money come final time.

18.  Andrew McCarthy had quite the Hambletonian Day in 2020 when he won with Ramona Hill in the big one and five times on the day — kind of like David Miller with Triple Crown winner No Pan Intended in 2003 at the Jug with 10 wins on the card.

19. Trainer/drivers have won the Hambletonian seven times in the 21st century and 48 times in the 20th century (55-for-96 overall — 56 per cent).

20.  Bill O’Donnell’s 1985 Hambletonian Day will forever be tough to top. The same day he set the Hambletonian mark of 1:54.3 with Prakas, he also set the all-time race mark of 1:49.3 with Nihilator.

It’s said that life takes you to unexpected places, but it’s love that brings you back home again.

Such is the case with the intrepid Christian Giallorenzo, who currently works in New Jersey for the Ake Svanstedt Stable as a trainer, a general manager, and just about everything else a multi-talented and trusted horseman could do in a top-tier racing stable where excellence and integrity mean everything.

It’s very hard to find anyone in the harness game who doesn’t know Giallorenzo, but some backstretch die-hards, especially those on the East Coast of the United States who can harken back to the late 1980s, wonder why Giallorenzo went missing for nearly 30 years. How did a Pocono Downs backstretch brat, a kid who was working everywhere, all the time, vanish into thin air only to return nearly three decades later working at the top of the game in harness racing? How did this happen?

It’s an interesting story that began in Huntington, NY, a small city on Long Island where Giallorenzo was born and raised.

“My parents divorced when I was a kid, and my father (Lou Giallorenzo) took me on weekends to Pocono Downs where he worked as a driver and trainer. I think I started working with harness racehorses when I was about 7 or 8 years old,” Giallorenzo said.

“When I got a little older, I started spending entire summers grooming, jogging, and training for my father and for other people stabled at Pocono Downs. I dropped out of high school when I was 15 and went to work for Roy Marohn at The Meadowlands and I lived in the racetrack dorms. After that, I went to work breaking babies in Florida for a guy named Bill Lambertus who I knew from Pocono. I think I was about 19 at the time. I did this back-and-forth thing for about two years, but it was difficult, and I was lonely, so I went back to Pocono Downs.”

Not long after returning to Pocono, Giallorenzo got his first job as a trainer working for Per Eriksson in Florida and New Jersey.

“Working for Per Eriksson was my first job as a second trainer,” Chris said. “That’s when I became addicted to trotters. I always was partial to trotters but breaking and developing juveniles for Per, in a stable that was dedicated exclusively to trotters, is when I realized that was the way to go. That’s what I wanted to do, but then I got sidelined by what was supposed to be a vacation in Sweden with my girlfriend who was Swedish.”

“Sidelined” turned out to be an understatement, and that’s where the mystery of his disappearance begins.

Giallorenzo took that vacation with his girlfriend, but he didn’t come back – not for a long time.

Though he may not have realized it at the time, Giallorenzo’s dream was coming true, but like all worthwhile dreams, it came true in the long and serendipitous way most worthwhile dreams are realized. His vacation in Sweden landed him 6,000 miles from home in a country he didn’t know, hearing a language he didn’t understand, and where the only person he knew was his girlfriend.

“I’d lined up a training job with the famous Finnish trainer Pekki Korpi back in Florida, but when I realized I wouldn’t be going back to the States, I had to rethink my options,” Giallorenzo said.

“The next thing you know, I ended up in a town called Linköping. In a few weeks I started working at this place where they repaired and maintained camping trucks or caravans. It’s not what I wanted to do, but it was a job.

“I started learning to speak Swedish formally, but the thing that worked best, especially when I worked around older people who didn’t speak English, was to speak whatever Swedish I could to my co-workers and insist that they spoke Swedish to me. I assume I must be good at languages because I learned it quickly.

“Kids in Sweden today learn English in school, but the older men I was working with came from a time when the schools didn’t teach English. Gradually, at a job where I was surrounded by people who spoke only Swedish, I learned the language to the point where I became fluent.

“In fact, now that I’m with Ake, I sometimes translate for him when we have our weekly meetings. Ake speaks English well now but sometimes he comes upon a word or phrase he doesn’t know, and I fill it in for him. I guess you can say that another part of my

job in the Svanstedt Stable is working as an interpreter or a translator. My Swedish friends joke about how I speak Swedish with a New York accent, but that’s gradually fading.

“Anyway, after two years in Linköping, I started getting my life together. You know, the normal things. I found an apartment and got set up in general. My girlfriend and I had a baby, my daughter Sandra. She’s 27 now and training to be a police officer in Sweden. Later on, we had two more children; my son David who’s 16 and my son Kevin who’s 20.

“We were content, but the weather was tough, at least for me, or tough enough that I had to get used to it, which I did. Living in Sweden was much more laid back than it is here in the USA. On the job you get about seven weeks of vacation per year, and a lot of paid sick days. I know that when I worked in the States that there was practically no such thing as a vacation or a paid sick day – especially if you worked in racing.”

Despite the cushy aspects of working a job in Sweden, it didn’t take long for Giallorenzo to ditch the Winnebago repair gig. He

found a training job with the great trainer Roger Grundin – a master reinsman who is one of the most famous names in Scandinavian harness racing.

“Working for Roger Grundin at that level, and I did that for a few years, I started to understand that there was a huge difference in the way they train horses over there,” Giallorenzo said.

“I mean, I already knew that the Swedes had their own system for training, but the obvious thing, the thing that really stands out, is that pacers do not exist over there, and no one has any interest in them. The training itself is more about conditioning the horse. You jog and train longer distances and you do it on softer tracks. The horses become very socialized because they jog in large packs. It’s not unusual for 10 to 20 horses to jog together. It’s totally different in a way that’s hard to describe. You don’t see it, but you feel it. It’s like my life experience in Sweden in general. If you don’t live it, you might not get it.

“You have to understand that harness racing in Sweden, and in all the Scandinavian countries, is like baseball in the United States. It’s a national pastime. It’s an important part of the culture. Everyone you meet knows about harness racing. Horses become celebrities. It used to be like that in the USA, but now it’s not.”

After 20-some years, Giallorenzo started thinking about coming back home to America, but he had a family to support. Sadly, his partnership with the girlfriend who took him on this long vacation, came to an end. Still, he had three children who needed him and any thought of leaving for America was put on a shelf.

“Not long after my breakup, I met my current wife, Camilla,” Chris said. “We got married and had two more children. My son Justin is now 11, and my daughter Jaquline is 10.

“Camilla knew that my dream was to return to America, and she encouraged me to do it. She told me to do it before I got too old. So, I got everything set up in Sweden for my whole family and lined up a job with Erv Miller in Pennsylvania. My plan was to work for Erv and then, as I set myself up over here, I would send for my wife and children… and that’s what I did.”

Giallorenzo returned to the USA in 2012 and began working with Miller.

“I was surprised to see that racing in the United States was about the same as it was when I left, but I had to readapt. Erv Miller is an old-school trainer, but it was like learning to ride a bike for me. I never forgot the old ways. My biggest trouble when I came back had nothing to do with going back to American horse training. The real trouble was that when I returned to America, I found out that I had no credit score. I didn’t exist. Renting an apartment and utilities is almost impossible when you have no credit score. I had to live with Erv until I could straighten that out.

“Things finally worked out and I sent for my wife and my two youngest children, but after only two years, we had to return to

Sweden because my wife’s father was sick. I came back in 2019 and went back to work for Erv.

“Right after that, I heard about an opportunity to work as a trainer for Ake Svanstedt and I jumped on it. I love it here and it was the greatest move I ever made. Ake is beyond exceptional. He is beyond great in terms of horsemanship. He sees things that no one else can see. We have about 80 horses in our barn, and he knows everything about each one of them. It’s amazing how he’s on top of everything that’s going on.”

On the day we spoke to Giallorenzo, he was returning home from The Meadows where three of the many horses in his charge had raced. His day had started at 4 a.m. with the long ship to The Meadows and now, returning to the Svanstedt Stable late into the evening, he was happy to report that all three fillies, Virgin Mary S, Ebbies Lady, and Red Light Lady had finished second in each of their Pennsylvania-sired events.

“I love these three fillies and I love my job,” Giallorenzo said. “It’s easy to say that maybe I am using this experience to eventually go out and have my own stable. I mean, that’s a possibility for every trainer who works for a top stable, but I’m in no hurry to move on. I’ll stay here another 10 years or more and be perfectly happy.

“It’s the perfect place for me. I’m back home in the USA, but as far as the horses go, I’m kind of still in Sweden. I love my wife, I love my children, and I love my life. I couldn’t possibly ask for more. It’s really a dream come true even though it took a long time.”

Okay, so now we know all about the mysterious disappearance and reappearance of Christian Giallorenzo. He simply went on a very long vacation to Sweden and returned with some priceless souvenirs – beautiful family, a full heart and a full life.

That’s a nice vacation, isn’t it?

The rise of reluctant catch driver Jordan Rossby James Platz

Jordan Ross did not have aspirations of becoming a catch driver. In fact, after the loss of his grandfather and horseman, Graham Ross, he stepped away from the business for a time. The Covington, TN native was lured back to harness racing a few years ago, and the 24-year-old is gaining valuable experience in the bike and producing wins. Racing at Harrah’s Hoosier Park Racing & Casino and the Indiana fair circuit, Ross is putting together a banner season.

“I love it, it’s been going well at both the fairs and Hoosier. I’ve just been driving better all around. Just getting more comfortable being behind horses and learning how to rate a horse,” Ross said of his improved statistics. “I’m learning which horses like to be on the front and which do not. I’m getting the feel of it, and that has a lot to do with it.”

Dean GilletteLast week, Jordan Ross drove Jusmakinyalook to victory in

her Indiana Sires Stakes test for sophomore trotting fillies at Harrah’s

Hoosier Park.

Ross made his first starts as a driver in 2015 and 2016, lining up behind the gate five times each year. That first season he collected a quartet of third-place finishes. The next year, he notched three wins, each on the Indiana fair circuit. Fast forward to 2021 and the young driver collected 49 winners in 422 starts, with purse earnings of $490,376, each a career mark. Ross is on pace to break each of those standards. He has already surpassed his win total of last year with 60 scores in 315 attempts. His $445,906 in purses to date put him in line to exceed the $500,000 milestone for the first time.

From an early age, Ross was immersed in racing through his grandfather, who campaigned horses in Illinois. Graham Ross operated a modest stable, serving as owner/trainer, and his grandson spent a good deal of time around the barn and the racetrack.

“He had a pretty big stable. We had a stable of 15 or 20 horses at times. We raced Springfield, Balmoral and the fairs in Illinois,” Ross said.

When his grandfather died, Ross took a sabbatical of sorts. It was Larry Poindexter, a close friend of Graham Ross, that encouraged Jordan to come back to the business. Poindexter purchased a couple of horses, sending them to trainer Robert Taylor. Taylor and his father were also friends of Jordan’s grandfather. Upon his return, Jordan went to work in Taylor’s barn.

Harness Racing Update

“Larry bought a couple of horses and brought me back to it. That’s when I started helping Spence (Taylor). He let me drive here and there, and I fell in love with racing again,” said Ross.

The up-and-coming horseman would have been content to work as an assistant trainer, but Poindexter suggested Ross drive competitively, an idea he was reluctant to pursue. The owner, also from Covington, was persistent, though, and the two struck a deal.

“Larry talked me into it. I told him that if he bought the colors I would try it. He said, ‘Well, if I buy them, I get to pick the colors.’ I said okay, that’s fine,” Ross said. “We’re the Covington Chargers, and our high school colors are purple and gold with a lightning bolt. Larry’s a big basketball fan, so he just went with the hometown colors.”

Ross and his unmistakable gold lightning bolt are visiting winner’s circles with increased regularity. Last season, the reinsman finished in the top five on the Indiana fair circuit as a driver. A chance opportunity steering trotting filly Swan Fine Lady for trainer Mervin Schmucker in 2021 led to a new relationship that is paying dividends.

“Actually, Doug Rideout started with her and he had one in there with her. Mervin asked me to drive her and I won with her and he stuck with me and gave me a few more to drive.

We clicked that way,” said Ross.

He guided Swan Fine Lady to victory in the $25,000 Governor’s Cup Championship at the Indiana State Fair last August, winning by more than two lengths. Ross picked up another championship victory with Northern Network, a sophomore pacing colt owned by Poindexter and trained by Taylor.

“I’ve been trying to get a little better each year,” he said of increasing his success at the fairs. “When I started out at the fairs I would get a start or two every now and then.”

This season, Ross and Schmucker have teamed for 15 wins on the fair circuit. The driver currently ranks second in the standings with 37 victories, registering wins for multiple trainers. At Harrah’s Hoosier Park, he is slotted 15th in the standings, with 18 wins – the same number he collected in the 2021 meet – and just over $270,000 in earnings. His biggest win of the season came last week in Indiana Sires Stakes action, where he steered the Taylor-trained Jusmakinyalook to a 1:53.4 score July 20 in a

$47,500 division for sophomore trotting fillies. Ross counts the daughter of Pinetucky, which he works with daily at the barn, as his favorite horse.

“I’m going to have to go with her, just because she’s not an easy horse to get along with. She’s kind of a complicated horse to drive, so she gives you a challenge. She’s not really a handy horse to drive,” he said.

Jusmakinyalook provided Ross with his first Indiana Sires Stakes win last season as a 2-year-old. This season, she missed the board in the first leg and raced second twice before breaking through for a win in the top series.

“She had a couple setbacks where she made a couple breaks. She’s just been a little hot, a little warm. But we’ve got her figured out now,” Ross said. “Last week she was just awesome. She raced good and got the job done; she was really nice. She’s in there with some pretty tough horses.”

Jusmakinyalook isn’t the only filly Ross had piloted to victory in stakes action. Three days after his Hoosier Park score, the driver guided favorite Apple Valley to a 1:52.4 triumph in the $50,000 Plum Peachy championship at Hawthorne Racecourse. The Major Bombay sophomore, trained by James Molitor for breeder and owner Michael Perrin, won by a length and a quarter.

If that were not enough, Ross is also training a freshman pacing filly he considers “pretty decent” that he co-owns with Poindexter. RNR Lucky Vida, sired by Luck Be Withyou, has a win and runner-up performance in two starts, taking a mark of 1:52.4 at Hoosier Park her last time out.

“My goal was to do better than last year. As long as I can get better each year, that’s my goal,” Ross said.

Mission accomplished.

Larry (Poindexter) talked me into (driving). I told him that if he bought the colors I would try it. He said, ‘Well, if I buy them, I get to pick the colors.’ I said okay, that’s fine. We’re the Covington Chargers, and our high school colors are purple and gold with a lightning bolt. Larry’s a big basketball fan, so he just went with the hometown colors.

Heidi Saner already making a name for herself in Iowaby Chris Lomon

Her career in the race bike has just started, but Heidi Saner is already showing plenty of drive.

Less than 10 starts into her standardbred career, Saner, daughter of longtime trainer John Saner, and the girlfriend of fellow driver Jason Telfer, has already made a name for herself in Iowa racing circles.

She wasted little time in announcing her arrival onto the local scene, finishing third in her milestone first official start, the one that came at Bloomfield, a half-mile oval in the city of the same name, on July 12.

Her partner on that day was Beach Bum Harley, a 2-year-old pacing son of Beachtrea—Aries Angel, owned and trained by her father.

The odds – it was a non-betting affair — were stacked against the driver and the colt bred by Spring Haven Farm in Utica, OH, but the duo managed to finish third of four against more seasoned competition.

“So, I’m in there with a 2-year-old, and the others are seven- and eight-year-olds. My horse, the fastest he had gone at that point was 2:14, and the other horses were in the 1:54 and 1:56 range. But we all crossed the finish line at what seemed to be the same time and the race went in 2.03.3. You want to win, but that was such an amazing effort on his part. He really stepped up and showed a lot of heart.”

The pair’s next start came at Monticello on July 21, a non-betting race with a purse of $1,000.

This time, it wasn’t a close finish. And this time, Saner and Beach Bum Harley had a picture-perfect ending to their journey together.

“I’m still smiling about it,” said Saner, of the milestone win for both horse and driver. “It wasn’t really a close finish, the other horses were a bit of a ways back, so that was a good feeling all around. It was exciting. That’s the moment you always hope for and when it does happen, it’s just as good as you dreamed of.”

In many ways, Beach Bum Harley happens to be the perfect fit for Saner.

What he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in spirit.

“I like driving the smaller-type horses. The smaller ones, I always seem to get along with them better. They have the same amount

Harness Racing Update

of drive as the bigger ones, but for whatever I reason, I tend to get along with them better. He’s off to race in Ohio now because he’s not Iowa-sired. I’m very grateful to have started out with him. He’s a smaller horse, so that makes me happy too. He and I will always have a special connection.

Perhaps the best thing Saner has going for her so far in her career is a willingness to learn her craft.

While some athletes could be swayed by their early success, that’s just not her style.

“I still do get a little nervous before I line up before the gate, being around the other horses. Usually, I jog or train them by myself, so this is a totally different scenario. But it does get easier with each start.”

It was in the last five or so years that the thought of sitting in the sulky began to occupy Saner’s thoughts more regularly.

In 2021, she made the decision to earn her driver’s license.

“I’ve wanted to drive for a long time, but I was also so nervous. Finally, last year, I thought, ‘Okay, I’m ready.’ So, I got my license and I just love it.”

It’s also helpful to have a long association with the standardbreds and to a person who knows the industry well.

“My dad has been part of the industry my whole life. He raced out in Illinois, in Chicago and all the big tracks, and then moved to Iowa. He got out of it for a little bit and then back into it about 10 years ago. The last six years or so, he’s had his own horses. I help him out almost every day, jogging horses, cleaning stalls and all of that.”

Saner isn’t shy about asking for advice or being open to hearing it.

Support is easy to come by.

“My dad, he’s always giving me tips. He’s very, very smart about all of this stuff. I listen to everything says. My boyfriend, he’s the same way. He’ll tell me if I’m doing something right, something wrong, if I need to change up something. But both of them have always been there for me and have really helped me.”

The biggest challenge when she’s holding the reins happens to come before the field is sent on its way.

With each start, however, that particular challenge becomes a little bit more manageable.

“Going to the starting gate is a bit tough right now. One horse, Midnight Celebrity, I’ve driven him twice now, and he’s huge. I was a little intimidated driving him at first because he really wants to get going and I have to hold him back at a bit. By the end of the race, my arms were like jello. But that’s only helped me get more comfortable, having those different experiences with different horses. That’s what you want and that’s what you need to grow. They all teach you something different.”

Soon enough, in a little less than a month’s time, Saner will be sporting a different look than she currently does om the racetrack.

Her racing colors have been ordered and she’s counting down the days until they arrive at her front door.

“The colors I picked are purple, black, and white. Purple is my favorite color, and I just thought the black and white would look nice together with that.”

Bu the young horsewoman from Iowa is looking to make more than just a fashion statement in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Saner, a Certified Medical Assistant, who also works at a local hospital and an area nursing home, will look to keep her early momentum going.

An open mind, staunch support from her boyfriend and her father, combined with an optimistic outlook, are an ideal trifecta for the new driver seeking to establish herself on the racetrack.

“Life is good. I just want to keep getting better, learn as much as I can, and get better every day. I really love what I do. I’m happy I made the decision to become a driver.”

I’m still smiling about it. It wasn’t really a close finish, the other horses were a bit of a ways back, so that was a good feeling all around. It was exciting. That’s the moment you always hope for and when it does happen, it’s just as good as you dreamed of.

Adare Castle is a once in a lifetime horse for Etsell and Co.by Austin Stanton / OSS publicity

The average price for a yearling at the 2020 Harrisburg Sale was $38,215. Adare Castle was a $10,000 purchase for trainer Mark Etsell and his fellow owners. That $10,000 yearling has turned into the best horse Etsell has ever trained.

“Everybody just feels fortunate that we have this filly,” said Etsell. “You can’t order them this way. They don’t come along often, if ever. We feel very blessed with it, and we appreciate it. It’s probably the only one we’ll have like her, and we are enjoying the ride.”

After a sensational 2-year-old season where she won 7 times in 9 starts, the Muscle Mass—Pacific Edge daughter with over $750,000 in earnings for Etsell and co-owners Robert Newton, Graham Hopkins, and Peter Porter, has come back at three without missing a step. Her record is 4-1-0 through five starts in her sophomore campaign.

“The biggest reason for her strong comeback is we never over raced her at 2,” said Etsell. “We kept it pretty minimal.”

That’s about to change as stakes season kicks into full swing across Ontario, with two more Ontario Sires Stakes Gold legs, the OSS Super Final, Simcoe, Casual Breeze, and Elegant Image stakes on the horizon for Etsell’s star pupil.

“When they’re racing every week, their schedule gets changed. It’s not as much work, and a little bit more paddock time,” said Etsell. “The biggest thing when we hit the busy schedule will be to keep her happy and not overwork her.”

Etsell has had success with trotting fillies before, his most prolific being Blossom Seelster, who made over $370,000 in 74 starts along with Fleur Collins, winner of a Champlain division in 1992, and Scent of a Woman who won a Peaceful Way division in 1994.

Of his three most successful female trotters, only Blossom Seelster went on to race in the Breeders Crown, something that might on Adare Castle’s calendar if she continues her winning ways into October when harness racing’s championships come north of the 49th parallel to Woodbine Mohawk Park.

She is not already staked to the race, and would have to be supplemented, but it has been discussed by Etsell and his partners.

“When that comes around, we can make that decision a week ahead if she’s healthy and racing good,” said Etsell. “She’s got enough money made so if we need to throw some at that, we can.”

But there is a lot more racing for the prodigious filly between now and the end of October when the Hambletonian Society’s event rolls into town.

Her next start is planned for August 15 at Grand River Raceway in an OSS Gold leg where she will be hard done by to top her performance from 2021 when she set a track record of 1:57.1 for two-year-old trotting fillies in a Gold winning performance.

One thing you can be sure of is that her owners will be in the stands cheering her on and soaking in the ride of being part of such an amazing filly.

“They’re having a ball. They don’t miss many races,” said Etsell. “They realize that these are once in a lifetime things. You don’t plan on grabbing one of these horses every year.”

Erv Miller trainees repeat in ISS action for freshman filliesby Emily Gaskin / Harrah’s Hoosier Park

After posting impressive debuts in the opening round of Indiana Sires Stakes action, trainer Erv Miller’s 2-year-old pacing fillies were back in the spotlight at Harrah’s Hoosier Park Racing & Casino on Wednesday (July 27) as they made another clean sweep of the stakes action on the card. Two $68,000 divisions of Indiana Sires Stakes were featured on the evening/s card as the fillies squared off in the second round of their six round series. Fillies from trainer Erv Miller’s barn finished first and second in both divisions.

Beauty N Grace, with driver Atlee Bender in the bike, made her second trip to the winner’s circle in her second lifetime start in the opening division — scoring impressively in 1:51.1. Beauty N Grace benefitted from a pocket trip while her stablemate Sleazy Mama, driven by Trace Tetrick, dictated fractions of :27.1, :56, and 1:24.1. When the field turned for home, Bender tipped Beauty N Grace from the pocket and stablemates battled all the way to the wire. Beauty N Grace was a two length winner over Sleazy Mama while Polks Image and Peter Wrenn rounded out the trifecta. Sent off as the 8-5 second choice, Beauty N Grace returned $5.20 at the betting windows.

The daughter of Tellitlikeitis—Safta Perry pushed her lifetime bankroll to $69,000. With the victory, Beauty N Grace is now undefeated in two lifetime starts and established a new lifetime best in the process. Beauty N Grace is owned by R. Ruffolo, Bowie Racing, L. Willinger, and R. Howles and was bred by Victory Hill Farm.

Not to be outdone by her stablemate, JKs Lucky Lou turned in an impressive performance of her own to capture the second split of the stakes action in a new lifetime best of 1:51.2 with driver Trace Tetrick in the bike. JKs Lucky Lou is now undefeated in three starts this season.

Dean GilletteJKs Lucky Lou (Trace Tetrick) set a 1:51.2 lifetime best winning her Indiana Sires Stakes division for 2-year-old pacing fillies on Wednesday at Harrah’s Hoosier Park.

Tetrick sent the 3-5 favorite to the front from post seven and she never looked back. JKs Lucky Lou utilized a :27.3 closing kick to hold off a late charge from her stablemate Tell’s On A Roll and driver Atlee Bender. Tell’s On A Roll was forced to settle for second place honors while Layallourloveonme and John DeLong utilized a ground saving trip to finish third. JKs Lucky Lou returned $3.40 for the victory.

With the win, JKs Lucky Lou has now bankrolled $74,000 lifetime from three lifetime starts. Owned in partnership by Douglas Overhiser, Rocco Ruffolo and Rick Howles, JKs Lucky Lou was bred by David Wayne Yoder and Daryl Lehman. Jks Lucky Lou and Beauty N Grace’s victories were two of three training victories on the program for trainer Erv Miller.

TWO-YEAR-OLD TROTTING FILLIES FACE OFF IN ISSTwo-year-old trotting fillies took center stage at Harrah’s Hoosier Park Racing & Casino on Tuesday (July 26) with two $67,000 Indiana Sires Stakes divisions headlining the evening’s 14-race card. It was the second preliminary round of their eight round series.

After a convincing win in the opening round of stakes action, Yo Beth D and driver, trainer, owner Verlin Yoder turned in another dominant performance to capture the first division on the card. Stopping the timer in 1:55, Yo Beth D scored her second consecutive stakes victory and established a new lifetime best in the process.

Leaving from post seven, Yoder sent Yo Beth D to the front and she carved out splits of :27.4, :57, and 1:25.4. Turning for home, Yo Beth D was on top by four and she coasted on to the wire finishing well in hand at the wire. Five Star Photo and Trace Tetrick were second while Marys Magic and Brandon Bates finished third. As the 3-5 favorite, Yo Beth D returned $3.20 at the betting windows.

The daughter of Helpisontheway—Scented Roses pushed her lifetime earnings to $66,250.

In the second division, T’s Pride utilized similar tactics and went gate to wire in 1:56.4 with driver Trace Tetrick in the bike. T’s Pride went to the front and was able to hold off a late charge in the lane from Helpineedsomebody and John Delong to get the win by three-parts of a length. Flo Lashomb and Homer Hochstetler rounded out the trifecta. As the 3-2 co-favorite, T’s Pride returned $5.00 to her backers at the betting windows.

Trained by Erv Miller, T’s Pride recorded her second lifetime victory from three lifetime starts. The 1:56.4 final time was a new lifetime best for the daughter of You Know You Do—Cheetah Hall who is owned by Anthony Lombardi and The Kales Company LLC. The victory was also one of four wins on the evening’s card for driver Trace Tetrick and trainer Erv Miller.

Wendy J LowerySeven Hundred (Jim Morrill Jr.) won the first of two NYSS divisions for sophomore pacing colts on Wednesday at Batavia Downs.

Seven Hundred, JD win NYSS splits at Batavia Downsby Tim Bojarski for Batavia Downs

The “Glamour Division” of the New York Sire Stakes was well represented on Wednesday night (July 27) at Batavia Downs as 14 top 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings bred in the Empire State lined up in two $59,200 contests.

In the first division, Seven Hundred (Huntsville—Exclamation) took advantage of a perfect trip to score his second NYSS victory.

Twin B Deluxe (Jason Bartlett) went right for the lead while Seven Hundred (Jim Morrill Jr.) and Bounty Hunter (Jordan Stratton) tucked in behind for the journey. The horses remained in single file behind Twin B Deluxe through fractions of :27.3, :57.4 and 1:24.2 before rounding the final turn for home. It was there that Seven Hundred left the pocket, bolted past the tiring leader and held off a fast closing Roll With The Flow (Mark Macdonald) to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:52.4.

Seven Hundred ($9.70) is owned by Rick Berks and is trained by Jake Leamon. Blue Chip Bloodstock and Our Horses Sense Stable bred the winner.

Morrill ended the night with a total of four driving victories.

The second division saw NYSS 2-year-old champion JD (So Surreal—Park N Orchard) look like he’s ready to defend that title as he went gate to wire in victory.

Mark Macdonald left like a shot for the lead with JD while the heavily favored Pleaseletmeknow (Braxton Boyd) also left from seventh and dropped in third. With everyone seated, Macdonald grabbed leather and backed down the second quarter to :29.4, forcing Pleaseletmeknow to come first up just past the three-eighths. The two hooked up in turn three and matched strides in :27.2 to three-quarters,

and then to the top of the stretch. But there, JD forged ahead and separated by 2-¾ lengths at the line and won in 1:52.4.

It was the third win in a row for JD ($5.40) who is owned by his trainer Ray Schnittker along with George Zitone and Melissa Beckwith. Zitone also bred the pacer.

Live racing resumes at Batavia Downs on Saturday (July 30) with post time at 6 p.m. Free full past performance race programs for all live race days can be downloaded by visiting the track’s website at bataviadownsgaming.com and clicking the “Live Racing” tab.

Lexington Selected to conduct mixed sale

Lexington Selected Sales Co. has announced that its mixed sale has returned for 2022 and will be held Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Fasig-Tipton Newtown Paddocks.

The sale follows the company’s annual Selected Yearling Sale, which wraps up Friday night, and comes on the eve of the Red Mile’s 130th Kentucky Futurity.

Entries of racehorses, race fillies and breeding stock are now being accepted. Consignors may enter by calling the company’s Lexington (859-255-8431) or New York (914-773-7777) offices.

“The mixed sale is a logical extension of the yearling market, and all the domestic and international buyers in town always makes it an exciting venue and a great time to sell,” said co-manager David Reid. “It further enhances what’s come to be called ‘The Lexington Experience.’”

Reid also mentioned that owners and trainers shouldn’t overlook the fact that selling quality racehorses and race fillies in Lexington creates what he called “instant capital” to help cover the expense of yearlings that were purchased just days before.

The company’s last mixed sale, held in 2020 during the uncertain times of the Covid-19 pandemic, posted a racehorse average of more than $57,000 and was led by the 3-year-old race filly and broodmare prospect Creature Of Habit at $350,000.

Co-manager Randy Manges agreed the sale’s a natural fit. He noted the entire Fasig-Tipton facility and auction crew is already in place to accommodate an extra date, and that it’s an easy “ship in and sell” for consignors.

Pebble Beach, Beach Glass set for epic battle in Saturday’s Adios

Elimination winners Pebble Beach and Beach Glass will leave from post positions 3 and 5, respectively, in Saturday’s (July 30) $350,000 final of the Delvin Miller Adios Pace for the Orchids at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows.

Connections of the eliminations winners selected their post positions, with Pebble Beach choosing first after winning a draw with Beach Glass for that right. All other post positions were determined by random draw.

The Adios anchors a blockbuster 15-race card that features six Grand Circuit stakes, including the Quinton Patterson Adioo Volo for 3-year-old filly pacers. First post is 11:45 AM, with the Adios going as race 15 with an approximate post time of 5 PM.

While there’s talent aplenty in the Adios field, the race shapes up as another battle between Beach Glass and Pebble Beach, the titans of the 3-year-old colt pacing division, in their season-long struggle for supremacy.

Beach Glass (Somebeachsomewhere—Im With Her), who won the Meadowlands Pace for Yannick Gingras, trainer Brent MacGrath and owner Schooner II Stable, jogged to a 5-3/4-length victory in his elimination. North America Cup champion Pebble Beach (Downbytheseaside—Santa Rosa) was just as dominant in his elimination, scoring by exactly the same margin as Beach Glass did. Todd McCarthy drove for trainer Noel Daley and owners Patricia Stable, Joe Sbrocco, Country Club Acres and Laexpressfoderadeovalente.

Trainer Tony Alagna sends out three (Atlas Hanover, Nautical Hanover, Quick Snap)) in the final while trainer Ron Burke is represented by a pair (Bythemissal, River Ness).

Here’s the Adios field in post-position order with drivers (before changes) and trainers:

1. Atlas Hanover, Andrew McCarthy, Tony Alagna

2. Ario Hanover, David Miller, Brian Brown

3. Pebble Beach, Todd McCarthy, Noel Daley

4. River Ness, Ronnie Wrenn, Jr., Ron Burke

5. Beach Glass, Yannick Gingras, Brent MacGrath

6. Fourever Boy, Mike Wilder, Tim Twaddle

7. Bythemissal, Chris Page, Burke

8. Quick Snap, Dave Palone, Alagna

9. Nautical Hanover, Todd McCarthy, Alagna
