We see through the lens of our family origins and cultural experiences. The great art galleries of Europe reveal centuries of humanity’s cultural prejudices in projecting onto Jesus personal, nationalistic, political, and racial identities. Many in my own country, the United States, have created a partisan Jesus who sides with their own political interests. In the comfort of our well-appointed sanctuaries and the security of our doctrines, we forget that Jesus was a member of a marginalized and persecuted minority. He spent the first two years of his life as a refugee in Africa due to the campaign of genocide initiated by King Herod. His mission was seen as heretical by the religiously correct and as subversive by the Roman political forces that occupied Palestine. Tradition tells us that all his disciples, except the Apostle John who died in exile on the Island of Patmos, suffered martyrs’ deaths for their allegiance to this man and his mission. I am writing this book during the season of Lent. There is no better time in the Christian year to reexamine our response to Jesus’ invitation, “Come, follow me” (Matthew 4: 19). It doesn’t take much simply to profess our belief in Jesus. But it is a far different matter to take seriously the words of the One who tells us, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me ” (Luke 9: 23). The Lenten season is a sobering reminder that the journey with Jesus leads to a cross. Jesus reminded the crowds that showed up motivated by self-interest, miracles of healing, and free food to count the cost of discipleship (Luke 14: 25-33). He con- cluded by saying, “In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples” (verse 33). I will be sixty-three when this book is pub- lished and a serious Jesus follower for over forty years. I have to deal, on a daily basis, with the luring sirens of materialism, the lustful passions of appetite, and the blinding comforts of living in that small percentage of privilege, in a world where a child dies every four seconds from a hunger-related cause. If you’re finding it difficult to be who God needs you to be and who your family believes you to be, know that you are not alone in your struggle. I look forward to continuing this journey with you. Together we will dare to dispel the illusions about a benign Savior who only taught us nice ways to live, who lives eternally to serve our personal needs and then takes us to heaven when we die. Jesus is so much more than this! Let’s rediscover the rebel who came to initiate the radical movement of God that will “bring good news to the poor, . . . bind up the brokenhearted, . . . [and] proclaim release for captives” (Isaiah 61: 1 CEB). Jesus asks all of us, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matt. 16:15) Perhaps this study can help give us more clarity about our answer. Until later….grace and peace to you! Rik

REKINDLING THE FLAME

THE THE THE

VILLAGE HERALDVILLAGE HERALDVILLAGE HERALD

During the month of March we will do an all-church study of Renegade Gospel: the Rebel

Jesus, by Mike Slaughter. The chapter themes will be the themes for Sunday morning

worship, and they will be fleshed out more in depth during the weekly small group

meetings. Here are excerpts from the intro of Mike’s book:

Let’s be honest. Most of us have taken the Jesus of history and recreated him in our

own cultural, political, ideological, theological, and denominational bubble. This is so

easy to do. We see through the lens of our family origins and cultural experiences. The

great art galleries of Europe reveal centuries of humanity’s cultural prejudices in

projecting onto Jesus personal, nationalistic, political, and racial identities. Many in

my own country, the United States, have created a partisan Jesus who sides with their

own political interests.

In the comfort of our well-appointed sanctuaries and the security of our doctrines, we

forget that Jesus was a member of a marginalized and persecuted minority. He spent

the first two years of his life as a refugee in Africa due to the campaign of genocide

initiated by King Herod. His mission was seen as heretical by the religiously correct

and as subversive by the Roman political forces that occupied Palestine. Tradition

tells us that all his disciples, except the Apostle John who died in exile on the Island of

Patmos, suffered martyrs’ deaths for their allegiance to this man and his mission.

I am writing this book during the season of Lent. There is no better time in the

Christian year to reexamine our response to Jesus’ invitation, “Come, follow

me” (Matthew 4: 19). It doesn’t take much simply to profess our belief in Jesus. But it

is a far different matter to take seriously the words of the One who tells us, “Whoever

wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and

follow me ” (Luke 9: 23).

The Lenten season is a sobering reminder that the journey with Jesus leads to a

cross. Jesus reminded the crowds that showed up motivated by self-interest, miracles

of healing, and free food to count the cost of discipleship (Luke 14: 25-33). He con-

cluded by saying, “In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you

have cannot be my disciples” (verse 33). I will be sixty-three when this book is pub-

lished and a serious Jesus follower for over forty years. I have to deal, on a daily basis,

with the luring sirens of materialism, the lustful passions of appetite, and the blinding

comforts of living in that small percentage of privilege, in a world where a child dies

every four seconds from a hunger-related cause. If you’re finding it difficult to be who

God needs you to be and who your family believes you to be, know that you are not

alone in your struggle. I look forward to continuing this journey with you. Together we

will dare to dispel the illusions about a benign Savior who only taught us nice ways to

live, who lives eternally to serve our personal needs and then takes us to heaven

when we die. Jesus is so much more than this! Let’s rediscover the rebel who came to

initiate the radical movement of God that will “bring good news to the poor, . . . bind

up the brokenhearted, . . . [and] proclaim release for captives” (Isaiah 61: 1 CEB).

Jesus asks all of us, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matt. 16:15) Perhaps this study

can help give us more clarity about our answer.

Until later….grace and peace to you! Rik

Easter Highlights

This year we are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of

the VUMC Women’s Retreat. We are going to take

some time and reflect on where we’ve been, and

think about what our legacy will be going forward.

Our speakers this year are Rev. Tish Malloy and

Sarah Nichols. Tish was our Senior Pastor when we

began the retreat, and Sarah (her daughter) grew up

at Village UMC. Emily Dimmitt, one of our newest

members and one of the worship leaders at The Well,

will lead music.

The retreat will be at Village UMC and is a one day

event, 8:30 am - 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 28th.

All women of the church and guests are invited to

participate. The cost is $35 and first time attendees

are free. Breakfast and lunch will be served.

Sign up begins Sunday, March 8th.

We look forward to sharing this experience with you!

As we begin Lent, we are

invited to reflect on the

cross and its meaning in our

lives. After taking time for

reflection, you are invited to

create a cross with whichever

art form or building process

that you choose. It can be a

painting, cross stitch, quilt,

metal work, wood work, or

found art. Then, tell us about it.

What was the inspiration for the

piece? What are the building materials or art form that

you used? Most importantly, what does the cross mean

to you? Why is it significant in your faith life?

Please deliver your cross to the church beginning

Monday, March 30th and be sure to have it there by

Thursday, April 2nd. If you have any questions, contact

Kathryn Witzel at [email protected].

Life in Bible Times Beginning March 8 children in grades K-5 will be studying “Life in Bible Times (Mary and Martha)” during

their Amazing Voyage. The Main Idea is “Learning about Bible times helps us understand Jesus and his

teachings. Jesus teaches us in our everyday lives.” The key Bible verse is Luke 10:42, “Mary has chosen the

right thing and it will not be taken from her.” Amazing Voyage gathers at 9:15 each Sunday morning in the

Jungle Room. From there, children go to Art, Cooking, Games, Movies, Science or Storytelling to learn more

about life in Bible times.

Holy Saturday Holy Saturday is a special day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. At Village UMC it’s celebrated with

children, infant through grade 5, having Easter egg hunts by age group, watching a puppet show about the real

meaning of Easter, dying Easter eggs, playing Easter Bingo, creating a craft, enjoying a tasty snack, having their

picture taken with the Easter bunny and registering for prizes. The event will be Saturday, April 4, from 10 to

noon. YOU CAN BE A PART OF THIS FUN MORNING! Plastic eggs and wrapped candy that will fit in the eggs can

be left in the box by Martha’s office. Money donations will pay for prizes for Bingo and drawings. Volunteers are

needed to welcome the children and their families and to assist with the activities. If volunteering is your thing,

contact Martha at the church or Shannon Boyer at [email protected].

UMW Leadership meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9,

at the church.

April 11 will be our own Bake Sale. Even if you are not a

member of UMW, we welcome any baked goods for our sale.

Special Prayers Requested Looking Ahead

In March, Kevin and Dr. Ashley Pojezny (son and

daughter-in-law of Carl & Patti) will be traveling to

Kapsowar, Kenya. They will be participating in a

month long trip to the Mission Hospital there and will

be working with local tribes in the area, most of whom

have limited medical care.

Serving at the Hospital will bring relief to some of the

long-term missionary doctors there, plus allow Kevin

and Ashley to share Christ with the local tribes people.

Here are a few of their prayer requests:

God’s light to be revealed to those in darkness

Wisdom and God’s hand of guidance in medicine

and communication

Protection over them

and the other

missionaries serving

They are excited

about what God

will do on their trip.

On Saturday, April 11, UMM and UMW will once

again combine their efforts for a delicious event!

UMM, then shop the variety of baked goods that will

be offered by the UMW. Start dieting now so that you

can “fully” enjoy this day!

A District Conference meeting will be held

on Saturday, April 18 at 10:30 a.m. at

Church of the Servant.

Deadline for the April 3rd Herald will be

Many thanks to those who helped to make the Silent Gift Basket Auction on Sunday

the 22nd such a success! Just over $3,000 was raised! Thanks to the Basket

Contributors, the cooks, the bakers, the clean-up crew and especially to those who

wrote checks to help us pay down the mortgage at Village UMC!

Burn the Mortgage Committee

From June Tucker:

“My Forever Church,

I feel I should address this to each & every staff, each & every member but suffice it to say,

we so appreciate the memorial to Ken. I truly felt the love of that church and know I will

always have part of my heart there. Thank you again.”

From Punk and Pat Bonner:

“Miss everyone and are certainly thankful for all the prayers, phone calls,

text messages, and all the delicious food that has found our home. Village is awe-

some, but only because of the people who represent the Village. Our love.”

Tom Huber is back!

“Thanks to everyone who pitched in to keep the church running while I was gone. There

are too many to name individually, but you know who you are! I’m happy to be back, and

so grateful to be a part of such a loving group. In love and service, Tom”

I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on

to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said. He was

seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles. Last of all, as

though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him. Apostle Paul, in the first letter to the Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3-8

And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Saviour’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be that Thou, My God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love!
