Miami Marlins Donate $30,000 to Miami Dade College to Establish Miami Marlins First Generation Scholarship

The Miami Marlins continue their commitment to serve the youth of South Florida with a $30,000 donation to Miami Dade College (MDC) through the support of Marlins ownership to establish the Miami Marlins First Generation Scholarship Endowment. The program will provide financial support to qualified undergraduate MDC students who are the first in their families to attend college. The endowment generates student awards for scholarships in perpetuity.

MDC is the most diverse institution in the nation and serves more than 120,000 students. The college's eight campuses and outreach centers offer more than 300 distinct degree pathways including associate and baccalaureate degrees, career certificates and apprenticeships.

"With a commitment to empower South Florida youth, we are excited to partner with Miami Dade College to provide support and opportunities to deserving individuals from our community," said Raquel "Rocky" Egusquiza, Executive Director of Miami Marlins Foundation. "Many of our community's leaders have graduated from Miami Dade College, and we want for that tradition to carry on for years to come."

"We are thrilled to receive this generous gift from the Miami Marlins that will surely contribute to the success of our students for years to come," said MDC Interim President Dr. Rolando Montoya. "Being first in your family to obtain a college degree is a life-changing accomplishment and has the potential to inspire others to do the same."

The announcement was made following yesterday's Miami Marlins' MDC Day, a virtual pregame event for all MDC students, faculty, staff, alumni, and more. The special event was held in advance of I AM MDC Day, which is celebrated every year on September 6, the day MDC first opened its doors 60 years ago. I AM MDC Day celebrates MDC's rich tradition of elevating the community and changing lives through education and opportunity. The day of giving and school pride also raises critical funds for scholarships and programs for students. In 2019, a record total of $2 million was raised on I AM MDC Day! MDC's acclaimed Miami Book Fair goes virtual, Nov. 15-22 By Community News Releases September 22, 2020

Miami Book Fair

Miami Book Fair 4<\, .400 VI Miami Dade College "

For the first time in 37 years, Miami Dade College (MDC) will transform its iconic

Miami Book Fair (MBF), a weeklong celebration of books and writers in

downtown Miami, into a free virtual event from Nov. 15 to 22.

The virtual Fair is the continuation of a proactive effort to remain socially

engaged, even as we practice physical distancing, per local and state guidelines.

Since the onset of the pandemic, the Fair has remained connected to the world

through a stream of interactive online events that include conversations with

authors, the annual Miami Writers Institute, The Little Haiti Book Festival, and a

Speak Up: Teen Creative Writing workshops, among others.

"Transforming an event that has been exclusively in-person for more than a

generation has indeed been challenging, but the opportunity for growth through

digital delivery of programs is also motivating for us," said Lissette Mendez,

MBF's programs director. "Over 37 years, we have built a Miami Book Fair that

represents diversity of subject matter, diversity of presenting authors and

diversity of fairgoers. We have built a program that introduces more than

20,000 children each year to books and writers, instilling in each of them a love

for reading that will support their educational pursuits.

Our mission is to engage our community through inclusive, accessible,

programs that promote reading and support writers. Though we will be online,

we will still be the Miami Book Fair, and we look forward to gathering in person,

once again, when the conditions allow."

This year's growing list of more than 200 authors and moderators includes

headliner Canadian poet, novelist, literary critic, essayist, teacher,

environmental activist, and inventor Margaret Atwood (Dearly: New Poems,The

Handmaid's Tale,The Testaments).

As in years past, the Fair will feature programs in English, Spanish and Haitian

Creole representing fiction, politics, history, memoir, comics, poetry, among

other genres, as well as an extensive program for children and teens.

Signature programs, such as "Evenings With..." and the IberoAmerican and

ReadCaribbean programs will return, and even the beloved Children's Alley,

dedicated to providing fun, learning activities for children, will have a digital

home. In addition, the Fair will prominently showcase Florida authors.

The virtual Book Fair Marketplace will feature booksellers and other vendors, in

place of the popular Street Fair weekend. And of course, you can order a copy

of this year's commemorative poster created by award winning children's book

author, illustrator, and creator of Disney's animated series, The Replacements,

Dan Santat.

A free and simple registration is all that will be required, and users will receive

email notifications about programs and activities as they become available, plus

practical tips on how to navigate the website, create a watchlist, and more. All

MBF programs will be available on a schedule to be published prior to the start

of the Fair. Although the Fair site will not be fully operational until programs are

complete and ready for viewing, the registrations page is open. Audiences can

sign up to get updates and program drop schedules at

miamibookfaironline.com.

9/21/2020 Miami Book Fair goes virtual in response to coronarvirus pandemic - Orlando Sentinel Jt-AV C IVV VV

MIAMI — This year, the colorful tents won't spring up overnight on the streets lining the college campus. Swarms of authors, readers and students won't flock to downtown Miami for the busy street fair weekend, lining up for signings and loading up tote bags with books.

The Miami Book Fair is not coming to Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus this fall. But that doesn't mean there won't be a book fair.

The COVID-19 pandemic has done what 9/11 and Hurricane Andrew couldn't do: It forced the fair, which began in 1984, to cancel its annual weeklong book frenzy at the college for the first time in 37 years. But the show will go on virtually and for free.

The transition from live to virtual fair, which will feature programs in English and Spanish, has been a painstaking process, says program director Lissette Mendez.

"I feel like I'm building the bridge across the Grand Canyon as I'm walking," she said. "It's like: Put the board down, take a step, put the next board down, take a step. ... It's a work in progress."

So what will an online book fair look like? Mendez says she and her team have benefited by learning from fairs that had to cancel events earlier this year. That means a blend of pre-recorded events and livestreams, possibly recorded interviews with authors and live Q and A sessions. Some events will be available on the website for one night only; others may linger online longer.

All the usual genres will be represented — fiction, politics, history, memoir, comics, poetry, Caribbean works with a focus on Haiti — in addition to robust children's programming.

Mendez envisions it as "Netflix for books" accessed through a new and upgraded website. You'll sign in with your email and create a password, and the site will take

Tale," "The Testaments").

More than 171 English-language authors have signed up so far and 8o Spanish-

language authors have signed up, with more to be added over the next few weeks.

The website is expected to go live sometime in September, at which point you can

create a watch list of the events you're hoping to see and sign up for emails letting

you know when new authors have been added.

Aside from a fundraising chat between novelists Ann Patchett and Emma Straub,

both of whom also own independent bookstores, the events will be free.

That's great for book lovers but financially rough for the fair. Not having to fly

authors to Miami from around the country saves the fair some money. But the loss

of ticket sales for "Evenings With..." events and the street fair and losing sponsors

due to the COVID-19 pandemic has been costly.

"One of our biggest sponsors is Royal Caribbean," Mendez says. "Other sponsors

haven't been able to commit or can only commit half the amount they usually do.

The story on the financial hit is not finished yet. There are still grants and proposals

outstanding that could help us. But we're down 5o percent from what we would

usually need.

"At the same time we're making sure that the technology is where it needs to be, and

that is not without cost. It's expensive, as anyone who has ever put together a

website knows."'

Still, despite the complications, Mendez says the upgraded website will be useful for

the next in-person fair, which will hopefully return in November 2021.

"We could use it in the future to highlight authors for a much larger audience,

people who aren't able to travel or come to Miami or leave their homes," she says.

Ultra, the Calle Ocho Music Festival, the Doral Food & Wine Festival and the Miami Beach Pride Festival were all canceled or postponed this year because of the coronavirus.

Could the 38th annual Miami Book Fair be next?

Nope.

The book lovers extravaganza known for its colorful pop-up tents that invade downtown Miami with hundreds of authors found a creative alternative—a free online event.

"It's going to be an online experience like a Netflix-style website," said Lissette Mendez, the MBF's program director.

The Book Fair, which will run from Nov. 15-22 with a mix of prerecorded and live-streamed events, will feature more than 171 English-language and 80 Spanish-language authors from

Joseph, a Haitian American historian and author of The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Award-winning Canadian author Margaret Atwood known for her novel, The Handmaid's Tale, will kick-off the festivities.

All the events will be hosted on a new website that works similar to a streaming service: attendees sign in using their email and create a password to open a list of programs, panels and conversations that allow the user to create a custom page of events they want to attend. When the viewer clicks on an event, the link takes you to Crowdcast—a live video platform for webinars that looks similar to YouTube.

The website, which is not live yet, currently lets prospective attendees sign up for email updates about the MBF and will eventually allow them to receive author lineup reminders.

Mendez said that although the Book Fair won't be on campus, attendees can expect the same top-notch program as always.

"This event is going to be exactly the same," Mendez said. "We will be having the same kind of authors, and a variety of topics and genres for all ages."

Staples such as the popular Evenings With author series and live Q and A sessions will go on virtually. Speakers will include something for everyone with screenwriters, poets, journalists, and cartoonists slated to participate.

And although the Street Fair won't be happening, there will be Street Fair booths on the website and a marketplace so attendees can buy books and authors' merchandise.

Sofia Ramirez, a sophomore at Kendall Campus who attended last year's festival, thinks that going virtual was the right move.

"As avid readers, we need some sort of literary entertainment which the Book Fair provides," Ramirez said. "It allows a wider audience from all over the world to attend this event and to visit the different speakers and events."

Not having the Book Fair was never an option, Mendez said.

Canceled or not? Updates on 10 major fall 2020 events in South Florida

By Ben Crandell, South Florida Sun Sentinel 1 day ago

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the calendar flips officially to fall, in South Florida a season typically rich with a bounty of cultural festivals and open-air entertainment. These days, still gripped by COVID-19 concerns, not so much.

© Jim Rassol / Sun Sentinel/South Florida Sun Sentinel/TNS Fans enjoy the 2016 Tortuga Music Festival. Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Here's where things stand on 10 signature events scheduled through the end of the year, from the Tortuga Music Festival, Moonfest and the Miami Book Fair to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and rescheduled Delray Affair.

1. Tortuga Music Festival

There will be no Tortuga Music Festival in Fort Lauderdale in 2020. The popular springtime country-music beach bash originally set for April 17-19 was postponed to Oct. 2-4 and then canceled altogether. The next edition of Tortuga is now slated for Nov. 12-14, 2021. The lineup will be identical to the one planned this

2. Delray Fall Affair

When virus concerns scuttled the 58th annual Delray Affair, set to take over downtown Delray Beach April 3-5, organizers made the best of things, moving the event to October and rebranding it as the Delray Fall Affair. Similar in scope — a celebration of food, art, music and community rolling over 10 city blocks — the inaugural fall event was set for Oct. 17-18. But now that gathering, too, has been canceled. The Delray Affair will return April 9-11, 2021. Visit DelrayAffair.com.

But it's Lagoa's background as a Florida Cuban-American that could have the most salience for Trump. His reelection hinges on the too-close-to-call battleground state, where his campaign has made outreach to Hispanic voters a top issue, worrying some Democrats.

"If the president picks Barbara Lagoa, they will be dancing salsa with joy in Hialeah well past November," said Gaetz, referring to Lagoa's home town, a blue-collar majority Cuban-American city that borders Miami and leans Republican.

Lagoa, a 52-year-old Columbia Law School graduate and mother of three children, emerged this weekend as a leading contender to take the Supreme Court seat held by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, the liberal stalwart who

died Friday at the age of 87.

Lagoa is no lock for the post, however. She's a relative unknown compared to the favorite of Washington's

conservative establishment anti-abortion groups, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who became a darling of the religious right after her bruising federal confirmation fight in 2017. Barrett and Lagoa are both high on the president's short list for the post, officials with knowledge of the process told POLITICO.

In contrast, Lagoa's views on abortion are little known. She had no high-profile rulings on the matter in the nearly 500 decisions she wrote as a state appeals court judge or in other decisions during her brief time on the Florida Supreme Court justice and, since late last year, a judge on the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

However, when she was vetted for her federal judgeship, she told the Senate she considered Roe v. Wade the "binding precedent of the Supreme Court" and "settled law" — echoing phrases used by Justice Neil Gorsuch and Justice Brett Kavanaugh when their nominations were being vetted.

"For lower court judges, all Supreme Court precedent, including Roe v. Wade is settled law," she wrote in her questionnaire. "If confirmed, I would faithfully apply this precedent and all other precedents of the Supreme Court."

Indeed, Lagoa's confirmation vote for the 11th Circuit last year had a much more bipartisan reception, 80-15, than the 55-43 vote on Barrett's appointment to the 7th Circuit.

Saturday One of the Republican advisers to Trump who spoke to him about Lagoa said the president was particularly receptive to the message about Lagoa's background. As the child of exiles who fled Castro's Cuba on what were known as "freedom flights" in 1966, Lagoa's story aligns with the themes echoed at the GOP convention, which featured two Cuban Americans on consecutive nights waxing poetic about the American dream and the horrors of totalitarian socialism.

Trump plans to campaign in Florida. He plans to stop Thursday in Jacksonville and then is scheduled to head to Miami, where some of his Florida advisers hope he announces Lagoa as his pick. Trump said he expects to nominate someone this week.

"We know Democrats are going to vote against her, even though they voted overwhelmingly to confirm her to the federal bench before," the Republican said. "Democrats always play the race card. Well, we can as well. What are they going to tell Hispanic voters in Florida about rejecting a Latina for the high court?"

Democrats say they have an easy answer: the rushed vote for a confirmation shouldn't happen. Instead, they say, the Republican-led Senate should follow the same precedent it set in 2016 when it refused to take up President Barack Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland, before a presidential election. Trump won, thereby ensuring Garland never got a hearing.

Lagoa would bring some legal baggage with her to a confirmation hearing. Lagoa came came under fire recently for refusing to recusing herself from a case in which the federal appeals court upheld a Florida law that rpbuirps felons to nay off their court fines and fees

before having their voting rights restored. The law was passed by the Republican-controlled state Legislature after voters approved a constitutional amendment that ended the state's lifetime voting ban for most felons.

Lagoa and another judge on the appeals court previously sat on the state Supreme Court when it considered how to interpret the amendment.

Sen. Kamala Harris was among the co-signers of a letter that criticized Lagoa for not recusing herself from the federal case. Harris, who was later picked as Joe Biden's running mate, would cast a vote in the upcoming Supreme Court confirmation hearings.

Desmond Meade, executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, said Lagoa's action on the felon voting case shows she is more interested in a political outcome than the law.

"Justice Lagoa was a leading voice in the recent 11th Circuit Court decision that fell squarely along partisan lines and silenced hundreds of thousands of voters in Florida, who months earlier had been legally able to vote," Meade said in a text. "That decision demonstrated we are fighting so hard for people's lives to be placed over politics, and that should be the attitude of anyone who aspires to serve on the highest court in the land."

Democrats say that Lagoa's decision to join the 6-4 majority that kept the tight voting restrictions on felons could also help rally Black voters because African Americans are disproportionately incarcerated in Florida.

But the racial politics could cut both ways.

"We hope Democrats attack a Latina as a racist," said a Republican who has discussed Lagoa with Trump's campaign. "There's a broad pool of Hispanic voters who will get turned off by that."

And to Democrats who would accuse Trump of playing identity politics, Republicans note that Biden pledged to pick a Black woman for the court.

Black voters account for 13 percent of registered voters in Florida; Latinos 17 percent. Both are bases of the Democratic Party, but Hispanic voters are more winnable for Republicans, in part because Cuban-Americans tend to vote heavily Republican. For that segment of the Latino electorate, Lagoa backers say, her nomination

But there's a group of independent Hispanic voters, many of them Spanish speakers, who can be messaged to and won by Republicans, strategists say, especially

with Biden showing some signs of weakness with Latinos across the state and in Miami-Dade County.

Veteran Democratic pollster and consultant Fernand Amandi, who advised Obama's successful outreach to Latinos and also consulted for Michael Bloomberg's primary campaign, said Lagoa's potential pick would be "a choice pregnant with political considerations."

"It's a play for women, Hispanics and most importantly, Florida's 29 Electoral votes," Amandi said. "Barbara Lagoa is the conservative Cuban version of Sonia Sotomayor."

Jesse Panuccio, a longtime Florida attorney and former third-ranking official in the Department of Justice in the Trump administration, echoed Amandi and said the pick of Lagoa could "energize" an important slice of the Florida electorate.

"I think choosing Barbara Lagoa as a Supreme Court nominee would be the best thing the president could do politically in this state," said Panuccio, who was on the nominating commission that recommended Lagoa for a spot on the state Supreme Court. "It is of course the biggest swing state in the country, everyone knows that."

Pannucio is a member of the conservative Federalist Society, whose members in Florida and Washington are advocating for Lagoa as well.

A DeSantis adviser said of Lagoa that she's "money in the bank" for Trump's Florida campaign.

"She right on the law. She right on the politics. It's a no-brainer," the adviser said.

Lagoa already made history as the first Hispanic woman and first Cuban-American woman to serve on the Florida Supreme Court. DeSantis announced her selection for the high court at Miami's Freedom Tower, which welcomed Cuban exiles and where Rubio announced his 2016 bid for president. One Trump confidante hoped the president would use the venue to make his nomination announcement of Lagoa.

then-Gov. Jeb Bush. Her husband, Paul Huck, served as general counsel to Bush's successor, Charlie Crist, who's now a Democratic congressman and who described Lagoa as "a delightful person."

"She's absolutely charming and struck me as a very good soul," Crist said.

The rapid ascent of the Florida International University graduate doesn't surprise those who know Lagoa.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Becerra, who attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Hialeah with Lagoa, used one word over and over to describe Lagoa: "Star." Becerra recalled during her investiture to the Florida Supreme Court how Lagoa played the lead role of the Virgin of Guadalupe in a school play that remains a running joke for them after decades.

It's Lagoa connections to Miami-Dade — and her role in trying to block President Bill Clinton's administration from sending 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez back to his father in Cuba — that could make her too hard to ignore ahead of the election. The decision by the Clinton administration to repatriate Gonzalez, whose mother died trying to escape from Cuba, reverberated through Florida and may have ultimately cost the 2000 election for then-Vice President Al Gore. Gore lost to George W. Bush by 537 votes in an election that was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Eliot Pedrosa, an attorney who worked with Lagoa on the Gonzalez case, said she was "branded by the experience." Pedrosa, who is now the U.S. executive director of the Inter-American Development Bank, said during Lagoa's 2019 investiture that the case "seared into her soul" a respect for the "rule of law."

Former Miami Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, who fought to keep Gonzalez in the United States and represented Lagoa's home town of Hialeah, said Lagoa's legal record is solid and that her background is "extraordinary" and would help turn out votes as well.

"It's an American story," Diaz-Balart said. "Here's a Hialeah girl who's a great student who made her family proud from the moment she was born. And now she's making the whole community proud."

The Washington post Democracy Dies in Darkness

The latest crisis: Low-income students are dropping out of college this fall in alarming numbers Many low-income students say they don't have good enough WiFi at home to take online courses.

By Heather Long and Danielle Douglas-Gabriel

September 16, 2020 at 11:24 a.m. EDT

In August, Paige McConnell became the first in her family to go to college — and the first to drop out.

McConnell, 18, could not make online classes work. She doesn't have WiFi at her rural home in Crossville, Tenn. The local library turned her away, not wanting anyone sitting around during the pandemic. She spent hours in a McDonald's parking lot using the fast-food chain's Internet, but she kept getting kicked off her college's virtual classes because the network wasn't "safe." Two weeks after starting at Roane State Community College, she gave up.

"At my high school graduation, I told all my family I would go to community college. I was trying to better my future,"

McConnell said. "But the online classes really threw me for a loop. I knew I couldn't do it."

McConnell's situation is playing out all over the country. As the fall semester gets into full swing in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, schools are noticing a concerning trend: Low-income students are the most likely to drop out or not enroll at all, raising fears that they might never get a college degree. Some ioo,000 fewer high school seniors completed financial aid applications to attend college this year, according to a National College Attainment Network

analysis of Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) data through August.

The lower enrollment figures are the latest sign of how the economic devastation unleashed by the coronavirus crisis has weighed more heavily on lower-income Americans and minorities, who have suffered higher levels of unemployment and a higher incidence of covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Students from families with incomes under $75,000 are nearly twice as likely to say they "canceled all plans" to take classes this fall as students from families with incomes over $100,000, according to a U.S. Census Bureau survey in late August.

The drop-off in college enrollment is unusual and particular to this pandemic, as college enrollment during the Great Recession grew. Typically, enrollment jumps during economic downturns when jobs are scarce and people look to

retrain. Yet, the opposite is happening now.

Students who are the first in their families to pursue college degrees don't tend to take "gap years" to travel and intern. When low-income students stop attending school, they rarely return, diminishing their job and wage prospects for the rest of their lives. Only 13 percent of college dropouts ever return, a National Student Clearinghouse report last year

found, and even fewer graduate.

"The ultimate fear is this could be a lost generation of low-income students," said Bill DeBaun, the National College

Attainment Network's (NCAN) data director, who put together the FAFSA tracker.

Enrollment trends so far show especially steep drops among Black students and rural White students. These students are facing multiple setbacks: difficulty paying for college, job losses and the public health crisis, as coronavirus cases have hit African American and Hispanic communities the hardest. A new report from the National Student Clearinghouse found summer enrollment fell the most at community colleges and among Black students. Experts say summer trends are often a good indicator of what's to come.

Official fall enrollment data won't come out until October, but education research company EAB has been tracking tuition deposits at Pao four-year colleges, because deposits are a good indicator of whether a student will actually attend. Deposits are down 8.4 percent among families making less than $60,000 a year.

Students from lower-income families and students of color have fueled undergraduate enrollment growth over the past two decades, though they still struggle to complete their degrees. Now many higher education leaders worry the pandemic could be wiping out years of progress.

"We could erase a lot of access gains over the past 20 years in one fell swoop," said Brett Schraeder, an EAB consultant

who put together the report.

When he saw students huddled outside a Sheetz convenience store trying to do their virtual classes on the store's WiFi network, John J. "Ski" Sygielski, president of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, realized just how much help his school would have to provide low-income students if they were to make it through the fall semester.

Like many schools, HACC is predominantly holding virtual classes this fall. Sygielski's team has given out hundreds of computers to needy students and "close to 400" hotspots, but he fears too many students will just give up on higher education as they see family members getting sick with covid-19, losing jobs and struggling to eat.

"I've had students leave laptops in my office at night and pick them up in the morning, because they were afraid they would be stolen at home or used for drugs. Many don't have space to study at home. They don't have equipment,"

Sygielski said.

The pandemic has already wiped out millions of jobs at restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues that provided lifelines for college students needing extra income and low-income families struggling to pay bills. The U.S. unemployment rate was 8.4 percent in August, one of the worst in years, and over 14 percent for Americans who are 20

to 24 years old.

"I spent the last few months focusing on finding a place to live rather than focusing on school," said Roshelle Czar, 26, a junior at Sacramento State University. "Due to an emotionally unstable family dynamic, I do not have the privilege of

going back to an actual home."

Czar lost her job at an ice cream shop when it closed during the pandemic, leaving her without enough to pay rent. As her financial woes mounted, she ended up dropping out of her spring semester classes and moving in with a friend. She's been interviewing for jobs, hoping to earn enough money to re-enroll, but she hasn't landed anything yet.

Among the reasons students are citing for not returning to school this fall: frustration or uncertainty about online classes or changing class formats and content; fear of contracting the coronavirus; and inability to pay for classes after the student or parent lost a job or took a financial hit. This is according to the Census Bureau survey taken Aug. 19 to

Plug. ;j1 Vl 11011belllnllb W1111 QL 1C2lbl 011C dUULL VV111) V116111ally lintinteu LO 6V LV COLIC6e LUIS tall MILL LIICII UeLz1UCU 11VL LV

attend.

Dario Magana-Williams, 18, felt the disappointment of his high school senior year seeping into his freshman year of

college.

Getting accepted into George Mason University in Virginia held out the promise of a new beginning away from mom and dad. By the time he graduated from Washington's Capital City Public Charter School in May, that new beginning seemed further out of reach. His dad's hours at the restaurant where he works were few and far between as people stayed home. While his mother's job at a local school helped the family stay afloat, their finances took a hit.

Paying out-of-state tuition to take some classes online and some in-person at GMU no longer seemed reasonable.

"My parents saw no point to paying for online classes," Magana-Williams said. "They didn't think it was worth the tuition and were more comfortable with me staying home. I really wanted the independence, but this is the reality of

things."

Rather than take the year off, Magana-Williams chose to attend the University of the District of Columbia for a fraction

of the cost of GMU.

While some students have shifted from more expensive universities to lower-cost community colleges or state schools, enrollment trends show particularly large drop-offs at community colleges, another statistic that suggests many lower-income students aren't going to college at all during the pandemic.

Enrollment is down 13 percent at HACC this fall, though enrollment is still underway because some classes don't start until later this month. Black enrollment is down 17 percent, and Hispanic enrollment is down almost 19 percent. It's a similar story at many other flagship community and public colleges. Fall enrollment at Miami Dade College is down 17.5 percent so far, with a 16 percent decline among Hispanic students and a 20 percent decline among Black students. Northern Virginia Community College and the City University of New York are down about 4 percent each this fall,

with early data indicating a steep decline for Black students at NOVA.

"The notion of a gap year does not exist for these students. If they don't start attending now, life will happen," said Kim Cook, executive director of NCAN. "They'll help their family or get a job. Then it will not seem possible to make time

for college."

Students who have dropped out of college this fall overwhelmingly told The Washington Post that it was because of virtual classes. They preferred the supportive environment of attending in-person classes and being able to speak with teachers, fellow students and support staff. They struggled to find a quiet place at home to study and many lacked

reliable Internet.

"I just don't see the benefit of me taking online-only classes right now if I'm paying full tuition and not getting the perks I enjoyed the most — access to the gym and library," said Katie Suriel, 30, who did not enroll in classes at Baruch

College, part of CUNY, this fall. "I like the structure of in-person classes."

Suriel has been working full time at a juice company in New York City, figuring it is better to hang on to her job during

what happens with the pandemic and virtual classes.

Without the usual face-to-face reminders from teachers and counselors to fill out applications for college and financial aid and stay engaged in classes, students are falling through the cracks.

FAFSA completions are down 4 percent overall among high school students, but they are down nearly 6 percent among students from Title Ihigh schools, which serve a large number of high-poverty students, according to NCAN's FAFSA

tracker.

The Education Department declined to comment, saying agency officials don't have historical information to know how FAFSA completion or college enrollment will fare during the pandemic.

Kristin McGuire normally gives several FAFSA workshops a month to low-income high school students in California through Young Invincibles, a young adult research and advocacy group. But since the pandemic hit and K-12 classes went virtual, she hasn't been invited to give any talks. Some schools have told her they can't invite her to their virtual classes for privacy reasons.

She has organized virtual sessions on her own and spread the word on social media, but it's not the same. Many questions she gets from parents are about whether it's safe to attend college right now.

"Once families started to hear about the pandemic, they made decisions for their child to wait to go to college," said McGuire, who is Western Region director for Young Invincibles.

Even among students who complete the FAFSA applications, there's been a drop-off in enrollment, especially among students who have been asked to go through the verification process, an extra hurdle that requires families to submit additional paperwork proving identity and income.

Be A Leader Foundation, a college access nonprofit in Phoenix, recently helped a local community college make calls to 400 students who had applied for admission and completed the financial aid forms but had never enrolled.

"When the pandemic hit, we were knee-deep in the FAFSA, cleaning up FAFSA, getting students through verification. Then we didn't have direct access to students at the school level, and it became a challenge to get connected," said Soilo J. Felix, chief program officer at Be A Leader Foundation. "We are seeing a lot of students either not finishing up their verification or completing all of the final steps for enrollment."

For McConnell, who dropped out of college in Tennessee, leaving school means she has forfeited her scholarship. She told her dad she plans to return to college later on, but she knows that loss will make it even more challenging.

"I'm going to try to save up some money, hope to enroll back in school next year or year after that," said McConnell, who dreamed of being an agriculture education teacher. "I probably won't go to community college. I'll probably go to

a technical school."

Deportation of Immigrant Activist Makes Waves at nth Circuit

ALEX PICKETT September 22, 2020

Claudio Rojas (Photo from 'The Infiltrators" via Courthouse News)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (CN) — The nth Circuit pressed the government Tuesday on whether it had pure motives in deporting a prominent immigrant rights activist.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Argentine immigrant Claudio Rojas in February 2319 just before he was scheduled to speak at the Miami Film Festival for his role in "The Infiltrators," a documentary criticizing conditions at an ICE detention facility in South Florida. The film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won two awards.

"ICE's actions constitute outrageous retaliation," Rojas' attorney, Alina Das, told the Atlanta-based appellate panel Tuesday. "These actions made international headlines precisely because they sent a message: criticize ICE and ICE will deport you."

Responding to some pushback from U.S. Circuit Judge Richard Tallman, a Clinton appointee who normally presides in the 9th Circuit, Das said the lower court dismissed the case prematurely last year.

Das, a law professor at New York University and co-director of the Immigrant Rights Clinic, insisted Rojas' claims of a First Amendment violation should have been heard.

"His deportation itself is unlawful," Das said.

Justice Department attorney Thomas York meanwhile urged the nth Circuit to affirm, saying the claims are judicially barred since Rojas is a noncitizen who has already been deported.

"The government has discretion to execute on that final order of removal," York said, adding the writ of habeas corpus guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution "does not cover the type of relief the petitioner is asking for."

9/23/2020 Deportation of Immigrant Activist Makes Waves at 11th Circuit

U.S. Circuit Judge Robin Rosenbaum took issue with that argument.

"The government has discretion to execute the order of removal as long as it was not for an illegal reason," the Obama appointee said. "There's possibly an outrageous First Amendment scenario where there could be a problem. It seems to me there couldn't be a situation that could be more outrageous than we have here."

York also butted heads with the panel's second Obama appointee, U.S. Circuit Judge Beverly Martin.

"I just find it troubling that it seems that your position is we don't have to adjudicate his claim because we can just go ahead and deport people and then their case is moot," Martin said. "That just seems to me that can't be right."

Rojas out stayed his visa in 2000, making headlines in 2012 after immigration authorities detained him in a Broward County facility where he ultimately staged a hunger strike that led to his release. "The Infiltrators" centers around two activists who purposely turned themselves in to ICE to document the conditions at the facility that housed Rojas.

In the intervening years, Rojas had a pending application for a T visa, which allows victims of human rights abuses to stay in the United States and eventually gain a path to citizenship.

It was not until the publicity surrounding the release of "The Infiltrators" last year that ICE chose to arrest, detain and deport Rojas. Until hi: arrest and deportation, the 54-year-old routinely checked in with immigration officials and maintained a family in Miramar, a small city just north of Miami.

Das argued the government's actions were based purely on Rojas' exercise of his First Amendment rights and not any violation of immigration law.

"[The government] aggressively pursued the exile of a man that otherwise would be the lowest priority for deportation," said Das.

The judges did not indicate when they will reach a decision in the case.

MOVIE TRAILERS Trailer for Psychological Thriller Film 'Huracan' About a MMA Fighter

by Alex Billington September 20, 2020 Source: Vimeo

"It's up to you to deliver" HBO is now streaming this new film, Huracan, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Cassius Corrigan, originally from Miami. This first premiered at the Miami Film Festival last year and just got released earlier this month on HBO - but we're only catching up with it now. Huracan is a psychological thriller about Alonso Santos (played by writer / director Cassius Corrigan), an aspiring mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter who suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder. Legendary UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal, also an executive producer, plays Alonso's final opponent Cain Colon, in this film hailed by critics as so captivating you "can't stop watching." Featuring music composed by Roman Molino Dunn (aka "Electropoint"). The cast includes Yara Martinez, Camila Rodriguez, Steven Spence, and Carlos Guerrero. This looks solid - not just another repetitive MMA drama, there's much more going on in here.

Here's the official HBO trailer (+ poster) for Cassius Corrigan's Huractin, direct from Vimeo:

Huracan is a psychological thriller about an aspiring MMA fighter who suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder. Alonso starts court appointed therapy with pioneering but troubled psychologist, Dr. Villalobos. Through their sessions, Dr. Villalobos forces Alonso to dive deep into his traumatic childhood and uncover the nightmarish event that laid the foundation for his crippling mental illness. Simultaneously, Alonso pursues his one passion — making it as a professional MMA fighter. His coach, as played by Muay Thai world champion Gregory Choplin, senses that unleashing Alonso's vicious alter ego is the key to helping him succeed into the cutthroat sport of MMA, and pushes Alonso to embrace his condition as his greatest strength. Artist Biography by Michael G. Nastos

Vocalist Alexis Cole is an accomplished jazz performer with a sophisticated, urbane style and warm,

resonant voice, well suited to traditional standards and swing. Cole has performed with the likes of Rufus

Reid, Slide Hampton, Ron Affif, John Hebert, and Norma Winstone. Although based in N.Y.C., she

has played and taught in locales worldwide, including teaching at an affiliate of the Berklee College of

Music in Ecuador and as a faculty member in the jazz voice program at SUNY Purchase.

Born in Queens, New York in 1976, Cole grew up in a family with a long history of musical endeavors.

Her grandmother on her mother's side, who was a pianist and singer of jazz standards, initially taught

Alexis "Pennies from Heaven" and other American popular songs. Her father, also a pianist, singer, and

composer, gave her initial piano lessons. Moving with the family to Florida, Cole was a member of the all-

county, all-state, and high-school choirs, and attended the New World School of the Arts on a Young Arts

Scholarship, graduating in 1994. She did her first professional engagements as a teenager at a hotel in

South Beach. Initially enrolling at the University of Miami in their jazz studies program, Cole returned to

the New York area, attaining her Bachelor of Music in 1996 at William Patterson University in New Jersey,

tutored by Nancy Marano and Todd Coolman.

New York jazz vocalist with a warm, burnished tone and a bent toward swinging standards.

India Vocal Institute in Mumbai (where she trained in Indian

classical singing). She also participated in the Art of Jazz in Toronto, and was the music director of the

album, Zingaro, which found her shifting from piano accompaniment and working with bassist Jeff

Eckels and guitarist Ron Affif. Two years later, she released her first holiday-themed album, The

Greatest Gift.

Continuing to reinvestigate American popular standards, she focused on the theme of the innocence of

youth for 2010's Someday My Prince Will Come, paid tribute to the late baritone saxophonist Pepper

Adams on 2012's I Carry Your Heart, and channeled sultry romanticism for 2013's Close Your Eyes. In

2014, Chesky Records released A Kiss in the Dark, which featured Cole alongside guitarist Saul

Rubin, saxophonist/clarinetist Dan Block, bassist Pat O'Leary, and drummer Phil Stewart. A

collaboration with guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli titled A Beautiful Friendship followed in 2015, and a year

later she made her Billboard jazz chart debut with Dazzling Blue, a tribute to Paul Simon. CLOSE

9/21/2020 AfriClassical: Refugee Orchestra Project Appoint Portia Dunkley as Executive Director

(Boston, MA, September 14 2020)—Refugee Orchestra Project (ROP) is delighted to announce the appointment of Portia Dunkley in the role of Executive Director, taking over from Allison Provaire who now assumes the position of Director of Operations for the organization. Dunkley joins the leadership team alongside founder and Artistic Director, Lidiya Yankovskaya.

Born to immigrant parents, Portia Dunkley is a native of Miami, FL with Bahamian and Haitian Caribbean roots. Early on in life, she was introduced to the double bass and continued her studies graduating from The New World

School of The Arts in Miami, FL and attended Florida State University where she received both a Bachelor Degree in Performance and a Master Degree in Arts Administration. She currently resides in South Florida where she continues the joy of creating music with her husband, jazz trombonist, Waldron Dunkley and daughter Auriel, who also plays double bass.

In 2017, Portia started Teeny Violini, a mobile music education program for preschools and after-school programs, providing music education services for historically underserved communities, reaching over 600 students from preschool-5th grade weekly through programming. In 2019 Portia was chosen as a Fellow for the SphinxL.EA.D (Leaders in Excellence, arts and Diversity) inaugural cohort. In that same year she was recognized by the Knight Foundation with an Arts Challenge Grant to establish a new South Florida ensemble for her project, Music of the Unsung America, a multi event lecture-concert series that highlights music compositions by Black composers in the shadows of history. This project creates opportunities for Black and Latinx professional classical musicians in South Florida to perform works by Black and other minority composers left out of the "traditional" canon of music.

"I am excited and grateful to take on this new role with The Refugee Project Orchestra. I hope that my work with both with Unsung America and The Refugee Orchestra Project will help build communities of belonging, amplify the voices and creative talents of marginalized artists and inspire young people of all cultures to see themselves reflected in classical music," said Dunkley.

Dunkley joins the organization in what are challenging time for the performing arts in general. The organization has successfully pivoted in recent months, however, to set up a fundraising initiative for its artists where the public are invited to commission original works. One commission has been completed and performed with another four being produced. ROP also performed a short weekend series of open-air, socially distanced concerts in Chicago at the end of August alongside Chicago Opera Theater.

ABOUT REFUGEE ORCHESTRA PROJECT The Refugee Orchestra Project intends - through music - to demonstrate the vitally important role that refugees from across the globe have played in our culture and society.

The project was conceived by conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, who realized in the wake of the Syrian refugee crisis that many of her own closest colleagues and friends were not aware that she - and many others like her - had come to the U.S. as refugees to seek asylum from violence and persecution abroad. Due to the traumatic nature of their experience, refugees are often hesitant to speak openly about their history, and it is common for

zbc Nettlijork

inlci Patricia Mazzei and Adam Liptak The New York Times22 de septiembre de 2020

My effectiveness while on council is reflected in Melbourne's exceptional economic development, job growth, improved infrastructure, environment and revision of ordinances, all was successfully addressed. These same issues affect us today with the additional problem of economic recovery from COVID-19. We need to leverage all funds — federal, state, private — into projects that create jobs from construction to high tech. Labor at every level will spend locally on restaurants, barbers, child care, rents, mortgages — a trend that leads to more jobs. But it cannot, should not go too fast. It must be carefully orchestrated.

hacer tres examenes diferentes; Ingles, Matematicas y Fisica.
