Principal’s Message

I am pleased to welcome you to the 2007 edition and, our 79th season, of Fighting Irish football. This year promises to be an exciting one as we feel each of our teams should be very competitive.

We are very proud of our football teams as, not only have we enjoyed significant success over the years, we also have today the largest program in British Columbia with approximately 190 boys participating from Grades 8 through 12.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our coaches and support personnel for their outstanding work in ensuring each young man works to achieve excellence.

As the season unfolds let us continue to be thankful to our Lord, Jesus Christ, for the gifts and talents he has bestowed upon us. — David Hardy

Athletic Director’s Message

We are truly blessed here at Vancouver College to have an outstanding tradition of athletic excellence. We are proud of our football teams and the successes of all our student-athletes. Our football program creates an environment that supports and encourages high achievement in athletics and academic work within our faith and learning community. We believe that this experience contributes greatly to the overall education and personal development of the athletes by teaching self-discipline, integrity, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Coach’s Message

The 2007 Fighting Irish wish to thank Bruce Jagger and Andrea Bernett for the work they put into this program. This great publication speaks of the success of the football program and the school. Bruce Jagger has been a cornerstone of VC football for over a decade handling all statistics, history and helping with alumni events.

Our Coaching staff is the foundation of our success. Returning from last year’s Varsity staff are; Rob Kozikowski (Defensive Coordinator/ VC 94) Ryan Williams (Running Backs/Special Teams/ VC ’94) Doug Pauls (Linebackers) and Brian Taggart (Offensive Line). Praise is also due to the Junior Varsity coaches Ten Hon Choo and Joe Burke, as well as Gr. 8 coaches Mich DesLaurier and Gabe Pillay. Thanks to Mr. Hardy and the administration for recognizing the need for coaches on our staff and hiring them when possible.

Ronith Cogswell begins her second term as Athletic Director, and puts in countless behind the scene hours that are much appreciated. We continue to rely on the help of so many staff to make this possible, but special thanks to Tricia Marcotte and Andrea Bernett for their never ending devotion to VC athletics. Carole Prescott and Shellee Rogers help to make gamedays run smoothly. Dr. Gary Koss has been our team physician for two decades, and former VC parents Darrell Burns and Dave Fong are our team photographers, along with current VC football parent John Chiang. Most importantly, Rick Gazzola keeps this program healthy and looking good in his role as trainer and equipment manager. — Todd Bernett

Coach Todd Bernett Honoured

Varsity Head Coach Todd Bernett was honoured twice last year, winning the Sportexe Canadian High School Coach of the Year and finishing second in the country in the 2006 NFL/CFL Youth Coach of the Year Award.

Coach Bernett will be commencing his 7th season at the helm of the Irish this year. He has amassed an enviable record of 52 wins against only 18 losses (a 74% win record) and has taken his teams to the provincial

championship game on four occasions and to the semi-final game in the other years. In 2002 his team set a school record win 11 season wins.

Behind the scenes he spends countless hours of his own time putting together highlight tapes for his players who have the ability and desire to pursue their academic and football careers at the university level. To date, 32 of his players have gone on to study and play football at university. In 2005, the first of his former players played in the Canadian Football League and two more are attempting to crack the professional ranks this season.

His teams are known for a high level of discipline and sportsmanship, qualities he instils in them at every opportunity. On Coach Bernett’s teams everyone who tries out makes the team and during the

course of the season each young man gets a reasonable amount of playing time. To put that in perspective, in 2006, 14 different players scored touchdowns, 12 caught passes and on the defensive side of the ball, 31 had tackles with 17 of those recording double figures.

Congratulations on your outstanding accomplishments and your continued pursuit of excellence.

at 28-31-1 and, surprisingly, their

record against Seaquam is 0-1.

Meet the 2007 Fighting Irish Coaches and Support Staff

Todd Bernett – Head Coach & Offensive Coordinator

Born in Seattle, Washington, Coach Bernett attended Eastern Washington Univer-sity where he quarterbacked

the Eagles for two seasons as a starter. He joined the teaching staff at Vancouver College in 1999 and is in his seventh season as Head Coach. In 2004 he moved into the #2 position in career wins for a Fighting Irish Head Coach. Todd’s wife, Andrea, is also a teacher at VC and a General Manager of Athletics. They live in Delta with their son, Keon.

Rob Kozikowski (VC’94) – Defensive Coordinator

An outstanding player for the Fighting Irish teams of 1992-93, Coach Koz was named a BC High School

Provincial All Star in his senior year, on a team that went on to the provincial cham-pionship game. He is a graduate of Simon Fraser University where he starred for the Clansman football team for four years. He is in his seventh year as a teacher at VC and has been a coach of the Irish since 1998. Rob and his wife, Kari, live in Vancouver.

Doug Pauls – Assistant Coach

Coach Pauls is a graduate of Richmond High School, SFU where he took his B.Sc., and UBC where he

completed his degree in Dentistry. He was named the outstanding linebacker on his high school team. He went on to play three years for SFU, winning the Buchanan Award in 1981 and 1982 as the Clan player with the high-est GPA. He was an assistant coach with the Grade 8 team prior to joining the Varsity. Doug and his wife, Alison, live in Vancouver and their son, Matthew, is a Grade 11 student at VC.

Brian Taggart – Assistant Coach

Coach Taggart is in his third season of Fight-ing Irish football. He is a native of London, Ontario

and a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, where he played varsity football. He also played two seasons of professional football in Sweden. He is currently working with the Vancouver School Board as a Youth and Family Worker.

Ryan Williams (VC’94) – Assistant Coach

Another standout Fighting Irish player, Coach Williams earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Recreational Ad-

ministration at the University of Alberta, where he played football for the Golden Bears. He currently owns and operates the management consulting firm, TWI Surveys. He is entering his 9th season as a member of the Fighting Irish coaching staff. Ryan and his wife Allison live in Delta with their new daughter, Kendra.

MEDICAL STAFF

Dr. Gary Koss (VC’70) – Team Doctor

The longest serving member of the Fighting Irish football program, Dr. Koss has been the team’s physician since 1983. He

received his undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia and his medi-cal degree from the University of Calgary. He is an avid golfer and a part time hockey goalie. Gary and his wife, Maureen, have a daughter and two sons, Peter (VC’00) and Byron (VC’03).

Rick Gazzola – Trainer

A graduate of Sir Winston Churchill High School and the University of British Columbia, Rick has been a fixture in the Irish locker

room since 1993. He has served as trainer, equipment manager, chief handyman and great friend to a generation of Irish foot-ball players. He is a former trainer of the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer team and has also worked for the Canadian National Soccer team. Rick and his wife, Patty, live in Vancou-ver with their 9 year old daughter, Alexa.

SUPPORT STAFF

David Hardy – Principal

Mr. Hardy is now in his fifth year as the principal of Vancouver College and is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, with a

Bachelor of Education and a post-graduate diploma in Education Administration. Prior to coming to VC, Mr. Hardy was a Superinten-dent in the Saskatoon Catholic School Board.

He has a long history of involvement in athletics and was, for many years, the Head Coach of the Saskatoon Hilltoppers Junior Football team. Mr. Hardy, together with his 1991 Hilltopper team, was recently inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Linda, have two children, Dara (33) and Brett (29). When not at VC, he is an avid fisherman and golfer.

Ronith Cogswell – Athletic Director

After her second year at Vancouver College as Communications Officer, Ronith was appointed

Athletic Director for 2006-2007. Ms. Cogswell is excited about her new role having been involved in various sports at a competitive level throughout her high school and university years. She was a sports commentator in the Philippines for the professional basketball games television coverage. She holds a Bachelor in Commerce from UBC and recently completed her Certificate in Business Writing, Public Relations, and Marketing Communica-tion from SFU. She also coaches volleyball and track and field at Blessed Sacrament where her two daughters, Alexandra and Stephanie, attend school.

Tricia Marcotte – General Manager Athletics

Miss Marcotte has been at Vancouver College for 10 years and currently teaches Grade 3. She holds a B.A.

and B.Ed. from UBC. Outside of school, she is an avid snowboarder and enjoys hiking and biking and is a strong and vocal supporter of the Vancouver Canucks. Tricia’s energy and dedication behind the scenes has made her an integral part of the VC athletic program.

Andrea Prout-Bernett - General Manager Athletics

Mrs. Prout-Bernett is in her 7th year at VC,returning this year on a part time basis. She has been a

critical part of the Irish football program since her arrival. She holds a B.Sc. from Eastern Washington University and received her PDP from SFU. Outside of school she is an active golfer. She and her husband Todd live in Delta with their son, Keon.

Braeden RallaWR 6’2” 155 lbs

Braeden is starting his fourth season with the Irish football program and is expected to

make an impact this year as a wide receiver. He also plays on the Varsity Basketball team. He is an avid NFL fan and loyal follower of the Dallas Cowboys. Next year will see him at university with his ultimate goal a degree in business or law. Braeden is the son of Jerry and Devi Ralla.

Connor RoneyRB 5’6” 160 lbs

Connor is going into his fifth campaign with the purple and gold. He has proven to

be a very reliable ball carrier and performed to a very high standard last season when called upon to fill in for an injured team mate. He rushed for over 600 yards and scored 7 majors. He was named the Most Valuable Player on his Junior Varsity team and was also named MVP in last season’s Archbish-ops’ Trophy Game. Outside of school he is an active hockey player and enjoys water skiing and wake boarding. Connor is the son of Michael and Cynthia Roney and his brother, Brandon, is in Grade 11 at VC and a teammate on this year’s Varsity team.

James SallyDL 6’1” 220 lbs

James is a five year veteran of Irish football who has unfortunately been sidelined

with some injuries over the years. Now healthy, he is looking forward to making a large contri-bution to this year’s team. He also plays hock-ey and lacrosse and was MVP on his hockey team. A man of many interests, in addition to athletics, he enjoys climbing, ballroom danc-ing and chess. Next year he plans to attend university and ultimately go into medicine. James is the son of Martin and Susan Sally.

Ryan ShamsWR 6’1” 165 lbs

Ryan is beginning his third season in an Irish uniform. In addition to football he

plays both soccer and baseball where he was named Most Valuable Player on both of his teams. Next September, he plans to go on to university. Ryan is the son of Bijan and Lynn Shams.

Abhay SokhiOL 6’3” 245 lbs

This will be Abhay’s fourth season of VC football. Outside of school he is

an active cricket player. He has been on the Honour Roll for the past five years and plans to go to UBC next year to study science. One of his hobbies is cooking curry dishes. Abhay is the son of Harjinder and Dimple Sokhi and his brother Vdhayjeet is in Grade 9 at VC.

Sean TerrellLB 6’2” 180 lbs

Sean is a five year Irish player and is expected to play a large role on this

year’s defense. In addition to football, he plays baseball and soccer and enjoys snow-boarding. An avid musician, he plays the piano, trumpet and guitar and plays in a jazz band. Sean is the son of Michael and Jen-nifer Terrell and his brothers, Jeff (VC’03) and Tom (VC’04) are VC grads and his younger brother Mikey is at VC in Grade 11 and a teammate on this year’s Varsity squad.

Holden WhiteheadTE 6’4” 225 lbs

Holden is another five year man who had two

touchdown receptions last season as a junior. In addition to football, he plays hockey for the Vancouver Thunderbirds and enjoys snow boarding and surfing. Next year will see him at university studying either forestry or busi-ness. Holden is the son of Mark and Daleah Whitehead.

Andrew WongLB 6’0” 185 lbs

This will be Andrew’s fifth season in the purple and gold. He has been on the

Honour Roll each year since Grade 8. Of Fi-jian and Malaysian decent, outside of school he enjoys beach volleyball, ultimate Frisbee and photography. Next year will see him in the Commerce faculty at UBC. Andrew is the son of Francis and Renu Wong.

2007 Fighting Irish Graduating Seniors

Over the years, the Irish have competed against American teams from Washington,

Oregon, California and Hawaii. Since 1929, records indicate they have played

a total of 232 games, winning 85, losing 137 and tying 10.

To date, only one VC alumnus has made it to the NFL. Ed Ryan (VC’44) played for

the Pittsburgh Steelers. Peter Dyakowski (VC’02) while not drafted by the NFL

this season was signed as a free agent by the New Orleans Saints but, is now

with the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

2007 Fighting Irish Graduating Seniors

Jamal AllenRB 5’’11” 225 lbs

Jamal is starting his 3rd season with the Irish. He had an outstanding season in

2006, leading the team in rushing with 1,460 yards and 8 touchdowns. He was a conference all star and named the Best Back on the Varsity team. In addition to football, he is also a member of the Irish Track team. He plans to pursue a degree in business next year and continue to play football at the university level. Jamal is the son of Walter and Marie Allen.

Charlie CanaanDB 5’9” 150 lbs

Charlie is a five year man in the Irish football program, and will also be a VC 13

year man as he started Vancouver College in Kindergarten. In addition to playing football he is a goalie in soccer and both field and box lacrosse. When not participating in sports, he enjoys cooking. Next year will see him at univer-sity studying media / broadcasting. Charlie is the son of Samir and Alice Canaan.

Chris ChanRB 5’10” 170 lbs

Chris is starting his second season for the purple and gold. In addition to playing

football, he is also an avid rugby player. He is an Honour Roll student and plans to attend university next year to study marketing. In his spare time he enjoys writing poetry and admits to being musically challenged. Chris is the son of Donny and Wai Chan.

Jon ChiangDL 6’0” 200 lbs

Jon is another five year man for the Irish. He enjoyed an excellent 2006 campaign, leading

the team in sacks with 8 and averaging 3.6 tackles per game. He is an Honour Roll stu-dent and next year will see him pursing the culinary arts at Vancouver City College where he will enhance his love of cooking. Jon is the son of John and Iris Chiang.

Daniel GabriloOL 6’6” 270 lbs

Daniel is a five year Irish football player and is expected to anchor the

Offensive Line this season. Last year he was recognized as the Best Grade 11 on the team and has also been given the Coach’s Award on his Basketball team. He is an Honour Roll student and plans to go to university next September to study science and play foot-ball. He ultimately plans to go into medicine. He speaks fluent Croatian. Outside of school he is an active volunteer in his community. Daniel is the son of Dinko and Ileana Gabrilo.

Alex HernandezLB 6’2” 215 lbs

A five year man, Alex had an outstanding 2006 season, leading the team in

interceptions with 3 and averaging just under 10 tackles per game. He shared the Best Grade 11 player award last season. In addi-tion to football, he is an excellent lacrosse (both field and box) player and is also an accomplished boxer. Next year will see him at university studying business and playing either football or lacrosse. Alex is the son of George and Debbie Hernandez.

Andrew LeeOL 6’0” 225 lbs

Andrew is starting his fourth season for the Fight-ing Irish. “Cannonball“ is

from South Korea and started every game last season as a junior. He is an Honour Roll student and has been a member of the President’s Honour Society (average over 90%) since Grade 9. Outside of school, he plays the clarinet and piano and is an active volunteer. Next September, he hopes to attend the University of Pennsylvania or NYU to study Business Administration. Andrew is the son of Simon and Lisa Lee.

Tim LeeOL 6’1” 235 lbs

Tim is commencing his second season with the Irish. He is also a member

of the Varsity Wrestling team and placed fifth in his weight class at last year’s provincial championships. He is an active member of his church and sings in the choir. He is an Honour Roll student and hopes to attend the University of Waterloo next year where he hopes to continue wrestling. Tim is the son of Norman Lee and Aline Ko.

Scott MathesonDB 6’2” 190 lbs

Scott is commencing his third season of VC football and hopes to make an

impact in the defensive secondary. He is also an avid soccer player and a member of the Coastal Cup Championship team in the U18 league. He is on the Honour Roll and a member of the President’s Honour Society. Outside of school, he enjoys golf and going to the beach. Next year, he plans to continue his education at university. Scott is the son of Chris and Tracey Matheson and his brothers Troy (Grade 11) and Ian (Grade 9) both attend Vancouver College.

Michael PatkoQB 6’2” 180 lbs

Michael is a five year man and was the Varsity’s starting quarterback in his junior year.

He enjoyed an excellent season in 2006, pass-ing for over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was a conference all star last year. He hopes to continue both his academic and football career next year at university either in Canada or the US. Michael is the son of Jim and Maria Patko and his brother Kyle is in Grade 9 at VC.

Peter PlantaDB 5’9” 165 lbs

Another five year man, Peter is an excellent all around athlete. In addition to his

contributions to the football program, he is a member of the track team and, outside of school, participates in competitive Tae Kwon Do. An Honour Roll student, he has diverse plans for next September, hoping to attend USC in their Cinema Arts program or McGill studying Biology. He is an active volunteer both in and out of school. Peter is the son of Bill and Jane Planta.

Including the Class of 2007, Vancouver College has sent 35 young men to compete in football at the NCAA level. Universities

our graduates have played for include; University of Washington, Washington State, University of Hawaii, Oregon State,

Louisiana State, Utah State and the University of Southern California to name but a few. 115 of our former players

have gone on to compete at the CIS level.

Jamie Boreham (VC’96) – Saskatchewan Roughriders, Kicker

Jamie is starting his 4rth season in the CFL after an outstanding football

career at the University of Manitoba. Among his many honours at Manitoba was being named the Bison’s Most Valuable Player in 2003, being a second team All Canadian in 1999 and leading the CIS in scoring in 2002. Jamie is the son of Mike and Monica Boreham. His brother, Kevin, graduated from Vancouver College in 1998. Jamie’s grandfa-ther, Jack Boreham (VC’48), and uncle, Kevin Konar (VC’75), are members of the Fighting Irish Sports Hall of Fame at VC.

Bryan Chiu (VC’92) – Montreal Alouettes,Centre

Bryan is currently in his 11th season of CFL football and has become

one of the most outstanding linemen in the country. After gradu-ating a provincial all star from Vancouver College, he attended Washing-ton State University and was drafted by the Alouettes in the 2nd round of the CFL draft in 1996. He has been a CFL and Eastern Conference All Star for six seasons and in 2002 was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Lineman. He has appeared in five Grey Cup games. Bryan is the son of Martin and Teresa Chiu.

Peter Dyakowski (VC’02) – Hamilton Tiger Cats – Offensive Guard

Peter is commencing his inaugural season with the Tiger Cats.

He was selected in the second round of the CFL draft. While at VC, he was a Provincial All Star and named the Varsity Team’s Most Outstanding Lineman in both his junior and senior year. He is a graduate of Louisiana State University where he started every game in his senior year and was a member of the LSU National Championship team in 2003 and won the Sugar Bowl in 2007. Peter is the son of Tony Dyakowski and the late Shannon Dyakowski.

Kevin Eiben (VC’97) – Toronto Argonauts, Linebacker

Kevin is in his 5th full season with the Argos and is starting at line-

backer. He led the CFL in tackles in 2004 and was named to the CFL All Star team in both 2004 & 2005. Additionally, he was his team’s nominee for Most Outstanding Player and Outstanding Canadian in 2004. After an out-standing athletic career at VC, he attended Bucknell University where he was named an Associated Press Division I-AA All American. Kevin was Bucknell’s Athlete of the Year in his senior year in addition to making the Dean’s List. In addition to playing football, he also played on Bucknell’s baseball team. Kevin is the son of Larry and Laraine Eiben. His brother L. J. graduated from VC in 1992.

Sean Fleming (VC’88) – Edmonton Eskimos, Kicker

Sean is now in his 16th season with the Eskimos after they selected him in the first round of the

1992 CFL draft. He has participated in over 200 CFL games and has been selected as a CFL All Star three times. In 2001, was Edmonton’s nominee as the CFL’s Outstanding Canadian Player. After a memorable football career at Vancouver College, Sean went on to graduate from the University of Wyoming. Active in his community, he is Honourary Chairman of the Alberta Foundation for Diabetes Research Golf Tournament, which is held annually in Edmonton. Sean is the son of Christopher and Sharon Fleming.

Angus Reid (VC’94) – BC Lions, Centre

Angus is starting his 7th season with the Lions. Originally the club’s long snapper,

Angus replaced Lion great, Jamie Taras, at Centre, when he retired prior to the 2003 season. In 2004, he was named to the Western Conference All Star team. After a Provincial All Star season his senior year at Vancouver College, he went on to play for Simon Fraser University where he was selected an NAIA All American. He and his wife, Izabela, live in Richmond. Angus is the son of Duncan and Alicia Reid. His brothers Mark (VC’86), John (VC’88), Malcolm (VC’88) & Bruce (VC’89) all graduated from Vancouver College.

Konrad Wasiela (VC’93) – BC Lions, Defence Back

Konrad is starting his first season of profes-sional football after a very successful career with the University of

British Columbia Thunderbirds football program. In his senior season at Vancouver College he was a provincial all star and was named the team’s Most Inspirational Player. Konrad is the son of Voitek and Alina Wasiela and his brothers Jakub (VC ’94) and Michael (VC ’93) are both graduates from VC.

On the NCAA’s National Letter of Intent Day on February 7, 2007, Trey Henderson (VC’07) announced that he had agreed to a full ride scholarship with the storied football program of the University of Southern California Trojans. He will be the first Canadian ever to be a part of the Trojan’s program.

Trey played three seasons at the Varsity level and his teams played in the provincial championship game in each of those three years. He started at both tight end and defensive end for the Irish and filled in at fullback when required. In his Grade 9 season, he was named Most Valuable Player in

leading the Junior Varsity to the provincial championship. He leaves VC with over 100 tackles and 15 career sacks. He is expected to play on the defensive line for USC. In addition to his football prowess, Trey is also an outstanding track & field athlete having won gold medals at the BC High School Track & Field Championships in the Hammer Throw (2), Shot Put and Discus.

Trey’s scholarship represents the sixth consecutive season a Fighting Irish player has accepted a Division 1 football scholarship. He was preceded by Peter Dyakowski (VC’02) at Louisiana State University, Jon Conlin (VC’03) at Washington State University, Shea Emry (VC’04) at Eastern Washington University, Joe Eppele (VC’05) at Washington State University and Rob Nazarinia (VC’06) at Eastern Washington University. He also becomes the 35th Vancouver College Alumnus to play football at a NCAA school.

Over the years, a significant number of Vancouver College Alumni have gone on to compete in football at the professional level. A number of them have continued to excel at both the university and professional level, as they did when they wore the purple and gold. Many have been recognized by the Canadian Football League as attaining elite status in the league by being named a CFL All Star. Fighting Irish Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

John Beaton (VC’67) Football, Basketball – An outstanding all around athlete while at VC he was a member of the last provincial basketball championship team in 1967. After graduating from VC he went on to play football at the University of Tulsa and subsequently played in the CFL for eight seasons, playing in four Grey Cup games and winning twice.

Jack Boreham (VC’48) Football – An outstanding running back on the 1945-47 Irish football teams. The Irish, in honour of his outstanding contributions, retired his jersey #30.

Roy Cameron (VC’59) Football, Basketball, Track – One of the greatest running backs in the history of Fighting Irish football. He rushed for over 3,000 yards and scored 56 touchdowns in his three years of Varsity football. The Irish, in honour of his outstanding contribu-tions, retired his jersey #8.

Herb Capozzi (VC’44) Football, Basketball, Track, Gymnastics – An outstanding scholar and multi sport athlete who went on to star at the University of British Columbia and subsequently play in the CFL. He was General Manager of the BC Lions when they won their initial Grey Cup and served his province as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for seven years.

Reg Clarkson (VC’44) Basketball, Football, Baseball – One of BC’s greatest all around athletes. He excelled in all three sports in the 1943-44 school year and went on to distinguish himself in all three at the professional level.

Vince Danielsen (VC’89) Football, Basketball – An outstanding athlete at Vancouver College he was Captain & Quarterback of the Irish football team and played Varsity Basketball after fighting through serious health issues. He went on to play at the University of British Columbia and then to the Calgary Stampeders for 8 years where he retired as their third all time leading receiver.

Albin Dukowski (VC’72) Track – An outstanding sprinter, he still holds the Vancouver College school record for the 100m and 200m dashs which he set in 1972. After graduation he went to the University of Oregon on a track scholarship and represented Canada in the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Sonny Homer (VC’55) Football – The Most Valuable Player on the 1954 Fighting Irish football team, he went on to star for the BC Lions for 10 years. He played in two Grey Cup games and was a member of the initial BC Lions championship team in 1964.

Greg Kabat (1941-1947) Football Coach, Builder – The “Father of Irish Football,” he coached the out-standing football teams of the 1940’s and had a record of 33-12-1 in those years, playing an exclusive American schedule. He is also a member of the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame.

Denis Kelly (VC’68) Basketball, Football, Track – A three sport letterman who played on provincial championship teams in both football and basketball. He went on to star in football at Simon Fraser University and is currently one of the most successful high school football coaches in BC.

Kevin Konar (VC’75) Football, Basketball – An outstanding all around athlete while in high school, he went on to star on the UBC football team. In 1980, he was awarded the Bobby Gaul Award by UBC as its outstanding athlete. After university, he played for 10 years in the Canadian Football League for the BC Lions and was a CFL All Star in 1985 and 1987.

Bob Lasko (VC’58) Basketball, Football, Baseball – An outstanding all around athlete, he was an excellent football player, Most Valuable Player in the BC High School Basketball Tournament and, subsequently, a profes-sional baseball player in the New York Yankees chain.

Gordon Mackenzie (VC’53) Basketball, Golf – Captain of the Fighting Irish Basketball team in his senior year. He was also the British Columbia and Canadian Junior Golf Champion that same year. He went on to win a number of golfing championships including the Washington State & Northern California Amateur Championships and represented Canada in International golf matches.

Doug McLoughlin (VC’41) Basketball, Football – Starred on the 1938-40 football teams as an excellent running back and an outstanding kicker.

Leo Mulhern (VC’49) Basketball, Football – One of only two individuals in the history of the BC High School Basketball Tournament to win the championship as a player (1949 Irish) and a head coach (1960 Irish). After graduation, he played and coached at the Senior men’s level in Vancouver.

Maury Mulhern (VC’46) – Basketball, Baseball – The Most Valuable Player in the very first BC High School Basketball Tournament in 1946 (won by the Irish). After graduation, he turned his energy to refereeing and officiated in the Canadian Football League and in basketball at the university level.

Cal Murphy (VC’50) Football, Basketball, Builder – An excellent athlete who returned to Vancouver College to coach in the early 1960’s. His 1961 football squad is the only undefeated team in Fighting Irish his-tory. He went on to a very successful coaching career in the Canadian Football League.

Fred Owens (1955-1959) Football Coach, Boxing – One of the great football coaches in Irish history, he amassed a record of 27-13 while at VC with most of the wins against American teams. He went on to become Athletic Director of one of the largest junior colleges in the US and is a member of the US Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Peter Ohler (VC’59) Football, Basketball, Track – The quarterback and a leader of the great Fred Owens coached teams of the late 50’s; he went on to star at the University of Washington and subsequently played for the BC Lions. Since he retired from playing football, he has spent many years coaching at the high school and college levels, many of those years at Vancouver College.

Bob Pickell (VC’47) Basketball – A first team all star in the 1947 provincial basketball tournament, he went on to become one of the best players in Canada. He rep-resented his country on two occasions at the Olympic Games. He also played two seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos in the CFL.

Leo Petty (VC’57) Football, Basketball, Baseball – One of the finest all around athletes to ever attend VC. He quarterbacked an outstanding Irish football team and was tournament all star on the 1957 Provincial Basketball Championship Irish. He went on to play at Washington State and recently retired after a successful career as an educator in California.

Ed Ryan (VC’44) Football, Basketball – An outstanding athlete at Vancouver College, he went on to become an All American at St. Mary’s College in California and was the first Canadian to play in the NFL (Pittsburgh Steelers). He was also elected to the St. Mary’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Neil Williscroft (VC’63) Basketball, Track – One of the best high school basketball players in the province in his day. He was a two time provincial all star and Most Valuable Player of the BC High School Basketball Tournament in his Grade 11 year.

1946 Varsity Football Team – The team coached by the legendary Greg Kabat, was 7-1 playing against US competition. A number of its players went on the play professionally in the Canadian Football League.

Recent Irish Varsity Football Graduates – Where are they now?

Anthony Aldaba (VC’04) – attending a Norbertine Fathers seminary at St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado, CA where he is studying to become a teaching priest.

Prabhjeet Bal (VC’96) - lives in Vancouver and is President of Lotus Terminals Ltd., a transportation company providing intermodal services.

Jamie Bull (VC’04) – played football for Queen’s University and will be commencing studies at Harvard Law School in September.

Jon Conlin (VC’03) – graduated from Washington State University and will be spending some time in Tanzania, Africa working in an orphanage.

Matt Dukowski (VC’99) – graduated from Boston University and is now stationed in Winnipeg taking flight training with the Canadian Forces.

Noel Fontanilla (VC’00) – works in credit derivatives for Goldman Sachs in New York.

David Jagger (VC’98) – graduated from McGill University and is an associate with Birch Hill Equity Partners (a private equity firm) in Toronto.

Kevin Jagger (VC’02) – graduated from McGill University and is a Financial Analyst with Citigroup in their Investment Banking Division in Toronto.

Alex Lando (VC’97) – is President of Hydro Pro, a power washing company located in Vancouver.

Robert LeBlanc (VC’01) – graduated from McGill University and after a two year stint with the Edmonton Eskimos, he is now an analyst with Oliver Wyman Inc. in Toronto.

V. J. LeBlanc (VC’98) – graduated from McGill University and is now working for Electronic Arts in Orlando, Florida.

Paul Martinka (VC’03) – finished his undergraduate degree and will be starting medical school at the University of British Columbia in September.

Jimmy Rogers (VC’02) – completed his undergraduate degree at McGill University and will be starting law school at the University of Western Ontario in September.

Patrick Rogers (VC’97) – completed his law degree at the University of Western Ontario and is articling with the Stikeman Elliott law firm in Toronto.

Aidan Sullivan (VC’96) – is Chief Executive Officer of i-level Media Group Inc., a company he just took public. He is located in Shanghai, China.

Chris Tsakumis (VC’97) – is a Vice President with EPTA Proper-ties, a property development company. He lives in Vancouver.

Rob Weitemeyer (VC’00) – graduated from UBC and is now a member of Canada’s National Rowing Crew and lives in Victoria.

Irish Academics

Vancouver College has always prided itself on the ability of its students to excel both on the playing field and in the classroom. This past school year (2006-2007) was no exception! Of our graduating class of 159 young men, 104 earned Honours status as determined by the provincial Ministry of Education. Of those, 38 were Varsity Athletes. In addition, 12 of these 38 student athletes were awarded the Provincial Government Scholarship (Final average – 86% or higher). Of particular note is the number of multi sport athletes on the Honour Roll:

ty played the first game of intercollegiate football in North America 132 years ago and they just celebrated their 40th graduate

playing in the CFL. The VC number may increase depending upon what happens to Peter Dyakowski who was taken in the 2nd

round last year by Hamilton and Konrad Wasiela (VC’03) who was signed as a free agent by the BC Lions this year.

The Archbishops’ Trophy was donated by Archbishops Duke and Johnson for an annual football game between the Vancouver College Fighting Irish and the Notre Dame Jugglers. The initial game was played at Empire Stadium on November 11, 1957 before 3,905 fans was won 38-19 by the Irish. This season marked the 50th anniversary of that game and it is perhaps one of the longest consecutive rivalries in the history of BC High School sports.

In the initial game, Notre Dame gave an excellent account of itself in the first half, down only 12-6 to the powerful Irish, as the teams went to the dressing room. Frank Maslowski gave VC the early lead with a 3 yard run and Gary Ingram made it 12-0 with a 28 yard run. The Jugglers came back though with quarterback, Bob DeJulius, going in from the one yard line. The Irish were without star running back, Roy Cam-eron, for most of the half as he went down with an injury early in the game

Cameron returned to action in the second half and the Irish took over. He scored twice on runs of 60 and 48 yards and was assisted by teammates, Peter Ohler and Ray LaFreniere, who both ran back interceptions for majors. The Jugglers got on the board twice on runs of 10 and 2 yards by the game’s Most Valuable Player, Mike Degenais. Degenais just about did it all for Notre Dame, scoring twice, passing for a convert, recovering three fumbles and leading his team in tackles.

The 1957 Vancouver College team was arguably one of the strongest ever assembled at the school. Five of the starters, Pete Ohler, Roy Cameron, Paul Seale, Barney Therrien and Greg Findlay would go on to compete in the Canadian Football League. A sixth, Bob Lasko, decided to try his hand at baseball and was in the New York Yankees chain for a number of years. Notre Dame was coached by two former VC standouts, Cal Murphy and Frank Smith, both of whom had played in the CFL and both of whom went on to very successful coaching careers (Smith in the CIS and Murphy in the CFL).

Fighting Irish in the Grey Cup

Over the years, 20 of our alumni have played in the Grey Cup game. Almost all who have played in the Canadian classic have, at one time in their careers, come away with a ring. This past season both Angus Reid (VC’94) and Bryan Chiu (VC’92) played in the championship game. For Bryan Chiu, it was his 5th Grey Cup appearance, tying him with Sean Fleming (VC’88) for the most games played by an Irish alumnus. It was Angus Reid’s first Grey Cup ring. Every Grey Cup champion since 1998 has had a former Fighting Irish player on the team.

Two of our alumni have received the distinction of being named the Most Outstanding Canadian Player in a Grey Cup final. Vince Danielsen (VC’89) won this honor in 1998 and Sean Fleming (VC’88) won it in 1993. Fleming also holds a Grey Cup record after he kicked 6 field goals in the 1993 Grey Cup game.

Let the controversy begin! Late last year a survey was conducted among 20 individuals, all of whom had a long connection with Irish football. Some were existing coaches, some were former coaches, some were coaches of competitors, some were long time referees and others were long time observers of the program. The survey included the names and positions of approximately 100 former VC players with room to “write in” a player if the respondents felt a name was missing or someone was out of position. The criteria was left very subjective as voters could pick a player for what they accomplished while at VC or what they accomplished at higher levels of the game or a combination of the two. The other challenge is compar-ing players for different eras as the game has evolved over the years with new positions being created and the strategies changing.

While there is probably a built in bias towards more recent players (fresher in the respondent’s memory) the final re-sults showed a broad mix of eras represented. The decade of the 1990’s was the most frequently represented with

about 29% but all other decades (with the exception of the 1970’s) had 10% or more representation. The original ballot started with players as early as the 1940’s. Long time followers of the Irish may find players out of position but the respondents were faced with the challenge of a finite number of players allowed for each position. In some instances they moved a player to another position (from the one they were perhaps best known for) to ensure they were represented on the team. A good example is Vince Danielsen who played quarterback for the Irish but moved to wide receiver at the professional level. Voters felt he was best placed on the team as a receiver. In previous eras, many players played multiple positions. It is interesting to note that of the list above, only a handful did not compete at the university level and 56% of them went on to play professional football.

It is also interesting to note there was only one unanimous selection (Bryan Chiu (VC’92)), although there were a number of players who garnered over 80% of the votes for their position.

A Brief History Of Irish Football

1920’s’22 Vancouver College is started by Brother Michael Lannon in a building

on Richards Street in downtown Vancouver, BC ’25 The school moves to its current location at 39th and Cartier

in Vancouver.’29 Under the direction of Major Norm Burley, Canadian Rules Rugby

(Canadian football) is introduced.

1930’s’30 Under Coach Harry Seed, the Irish commence formal competition with

a game against the UBC Freshmen, which UBC won 10 – 8’31 The Irish join a new league with the UBC Freshmen and Prince of Wales

with games played at Athletic Park’33 Irish win the Labrie Cup, emblematic of the League Championship,

defeating Prince of Wales 2 games to 0 in the best of three final’34 A new public school league is started and VC is not invited to play.

They would play games against community teams for the next five years.’39 In order to avail itself of tougher competition, the Irish turn to American

rules and seek competition south of the border. Under Coach Br. Patrick Riley, they learn the new rules, but play only one game, losing to O’Dea from Seattle, 21 - 0

1940’s’40 A more extensive schedule is established under the leadership of Coach

Joe Budnick, who guides the Irish to a respectable 4-5-1 record against a full slate of Washington state teams. Crowds of 1,500 to 2,000 were not uncommon.

’41 One of the “Golden Eras” of Irish football begins with the hiring of former Wisconsin All-American, Greg (Hardrock) Kabat as Head Coach. He institutes a rigorous training schedule and it pays off as College goes 6-1-1 against American competition. The leaders of the team include Ed Ryan, who would go on to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL, Herb Capozzi and Bill Murphy.

’43 After four consecutive losses, the Irish defeat O’Dea, 6-1.’46 Led by future CFL’er, Pete Thodos, Irish Hall of Famer Jack Boreham and

Len French, the team goes 7-1 and has cumulative attendance at its home games of over 25,000. Against Kaimuki of Hawaii, they draw a crowd of 5,381.

1950’s’55 Another “Golden Era” commences with the arrival of Coach Fred Owens.

The team plays a game against Meridian High at UBC which would be the first game ever televised live in Vancouver. Under Coach Owens, the Irish soon compile a 27-12-1 record led by future CFL’ers Roy Cameron, Pete Ohler, Greg Findlay, Barney Therrien and soon to be professional baseball player, Bob Lasko

’57 The first Archbishops’ Trophy game is played between College and Notre Dame. The Irish come out on top 38-19.

1960’s’60 Former Irish star, Cal Murphy, comes back to teach, as well as coach the

Varsity football team. He would lead the school to its only undefeated season in 1961 and go on to be one of the most successful coaches in CFL history.

’67 The Irish, now competing in the High School League, are co-winners of the Shrine Bowl (emblematic of the Provincial Championship) tying Britannia 13-13.

1980’s’81 The Irish move to their new “home” with the dedication of “O’Hagan

Field, named after the wife of the first graduate of the school and benefactor, Jimmy O’Hagan.

’85 The “Golden Years” return to VC with the arrival of Paul Dal Monte as coach. Under Dal Monte, the Irish go to the provincial finals five times, winning twice. In the process, a number of players including Chris Burns, Bryan Chiu, Matt Clarke, Vince Danielsen, Sean Fleming, Sean Graham, Bruce Reid and Mark Reid go on to play professional football

1990’s’91 The Irish defeat St. Thomas More to win the Provincial Championship.’94 The Irish become the only school in BC High School Football history to win

both the Junior Varsity and Grade 8 Championship in the same year. ’97 The Irish win a team record 10 games, but lose to Richmond in overtime in

the provincial finals.

2000’s’01 The Irish go to the Provincial Finals, but lose to Carson Graham’02 VC wins its third consecutive Archbishop’s Trophy game (the first time

they have accomplished this since 1995), win a record 11 games, and go to the Provincial Finals for the second straight year, losing to WJ Mouat

’06 The Irish go to the Provincial Finals for the 4th time in 5 years, but come up 3 points short against Terry Fox.

’07 The current version of the Irish will attempt to maintain the standards of all those who have gone before them.
