Fr. Phil’s Communiqué
The Merciful Love of Jesus Family
 Through much prayer and discernment,
this will be our Family name that
identifies us from other Families of
Parishes within the Archdiocese of
Detroit. There is something special about
a name: it bestows an identity. In our
case, it presents us working together in a
united front toward a common goal.
While we preserve our individual identity
as Holy Family, St. Augustine, and St.
Mary Mystical Rose, having this Family
name reminds us that we are all called to
work with one another in the vineyard.
It’s the invitation for us to come together
and do what is necessary in building up
the Mystical Body of Christ, not only in
our parish communities but beyond. Each
of us are representatives of The Merciful
Love of Jesus. Wherever we go, this is
precisely what we are called to bring into
the world. It may look different,
depending on our personalities, our
knowledge and competency in regards to
the faith, our earnest seeking and desire
for the Holy Spirit to work through us and
in us, our level of surrender to the
Father’s will… This name calls forth
what we ought to be, not only in the
community, in the vicariate or
Archdiocese, but for all. However, it’s
important to recognize the concept of this
name and what it means. Our
understanding of mercy and love has to
first be rooted in truth (as opposed to our
own subjective take as to what mercy is
or what love is).
So, what is mercy? The following
exposition on mercy is taken from https://
www.thedivinemercy.org/articles/st
thomasaquinasvirtuemercy

St. Thomas Aquinas (12251274)
defined the virtue of "mercy" in his
great Summa Theologiae (ST II
II.30.1) as "the compassion in our
hearts for another person's misery, a
compassion which drives us to do
what we can to help him." For St.
Thomas this virtue has two aspects:
"affective" mercy and "effective"
mercy.
Affective mercy is an emotion: the
pity we feel for the plight of another.
In this respect, St. Thomas says,
human mercy is grounded in a
"defect" in our nature: the defect of
human vulnerability to suffering. We
feel pity for those who suffer because
we too are subject to such miseries.
Thus, our affective sympathy for
others arises from our capacity for
empathy. St. Thomas notes: "Those
who reckon themselves happy and so
powerful that no ill may befall them
are not so compassionate" (II
II.30.2). To some extent, however,
the intensity of our affective mercy
for the plight of another also depends
upon how closely we are united to
others in friendship (IIII.30.2): "The
person who loves regards his friend
as another self, and so he counts his
friend's troubles as his own, and
grieves over them as if they were his
own." An affective bond, we might
say, easily forms between friends,
and this renders good friends all the
more capable of sympathy for each
other's plight.
 Effective mercy, on the other
hand, is something that we do, a
positive action for the good of
another, taking steps to relieve the
miseries or meet the needs of others.
According to St. Thomas, the Latin
word "misericordia" literally means
"having a miserable heart"both
affectively and effectivelyfor another
person's misery…
St. Thomas argues that the human
virtue of mercy necessarily will be
both affective and effective. However,
to be the authentic virtue of "mercy,"
it must manifest two additional
characteristics. First, it must be rooted
in "right reason"
that is, in the
truth about the
sufferings of
others, and what
is in fact the
objective "good"
for the other
whom we seek to
help. Secondly,
the virtue of
mercy is proven
in effective
action for the
good of others, as
circumstances
permit. If we
merely
"sympathize" with the plight of
another and "share their pain" without
making the best of the opportunities
we have to help them, then virtue of
mercy does not abide in us in any
significant degree.

This is the mercy by which we are
called to live. This is the depth of mercy
we are called to be for our brothers and
sisters. Sometimes mercy is
misconstrued and reduced to being
permissive: one thinks only of mercy as
dismissing the gravity of evil that is
found in a particular act. This is why St.
Thomas Aquinas says that it must be

 Q. The very thought
that bread and wine are
magically transformed
into the body and blood
of Christ is so far
fetched, it is
unbelievable. When will
the Catholic Church
stop teaching this
absurdity?
 A. First let’s address your
misunderstanding. Nothing magical
happens during the priest’s prayer
consecrating the Host. Magic is sorcery.
Sorcery is of the Devil and strongly
condemned by God thru Sacred
Scripture and the Holy Catholic Church.
See: Deuteronomy 18:912, Galatians
5:1921, Acts 19:1819, and the
Catechism of the Catholic Church 2117.
There are way too many references to
list here. Please investigate this for
yourself.
For your second point, I agree whole
heartedly. Ordinary bread and wine
being miraculously transformed into the
Body and Blood of Christ is indeed far
fetched and unbelievable. But then
again, so is your eyeball, the life in a
gnat or an elephant and an acorn
becoming a 30 foot tall oak tree. These
realities are also so farfetched as to be
unbelievable.
We do not need to believe in
something for it to exist. Belief is not a
prerequisite to reality. I personally could
not believe in an all powerful God,
creator of all that exists, and then doubt
that He had the power to transform the
substance of bread and wine into the
essence of the Body and Blood of Jesus
Christ. And, do it all while maintaining
the appearance of bread and wine. This
to me seems like a simple task for the
God who created another unbelievable
absurdity when He created a spherical
earth and suspended it on nothing. (Job
26:7, Isaiah 40:21). Miracles are part and
parcel to the Creator of everything.
Now for your question: The Catholic
Church will never stop teaching the Real
Presence because she can’t stop teaching
truth. In the Book of Revelation, John is
caught up into heaven and observes the
saints celebrating Mass. It’s the same
Mass we celebrate with the same
Eucharistic banquet. All of the redeemed
of Christ are forever members of His
Church. Therefore, it is not a farfetched
absurdity to conclude, the Eucharist is an
eternal reality never to be retracted by
the Church established and protected by
Jesus Himself.

Why Have You Remained
Catholic?

In a world where it seems there are so
many reasons to choose not to remain true
to our Catholic faith, why have you
remained Catholic? We asked this
question in a recent edition of our
Flocknote email newsletter and here are a
couple responses:

“I actually left the Church in my
twenties and went to many other
Christian denominations.
I came back and stay Catholic
because of the Holy Eucharist and the
other sacraments. Jesus was missing
in all of the other denominations.
That is why it is so important to
impress the truth of the real presence
to all Catholics.”

“I have stayed Catholic because it is
the only Church that Jesus
founded.”

What about you? Why have you
remained Catholic? What is it that draws
you to the Church or back to the Church?
We’d love to hear from you.

Responses may be submitted several
ways:

Visit our websites and locate the
“Why Have You Remained Catholic”
button on the home page, then submit
your anonymous response (preferred
method).
 Message us through Facebook
Write our your response and enclose
it in an envelope marked “Why I’m
Catholic” and place it in one of our
collection boxes.

As Fr. Phil noted in his article “Each of
us are representatives of the Merciful
Love of Jesus” and sharing our faith
stories is just one small step in building
up the Mystical Body of Christ.

seen in accordance with “right reason” as
well as with the view of helping the other
achieve that which is objectively good: it
should lead somewhere that is oriented
toward their authentic human flourishing.
It is vital to recognize that this redirection
toward authentic human flourishing, one
that is rooted in Jesus, may or may not be
in conformity with the individual
receiving mercy. Mercy, then, assists an
individual to be better than where he is.
This “better” is seen in relation to the
light of the Gospel, the teachings of Jesus,
and that which has been passed down to
us through the Church.
This description of mercy then shapes
how we are called to love. This love is
oriented to none other than Jesus! He
said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the
life. No man cometh to the Father, but by
me” (Jn 14:6). Our goal is to save souls.
This means each of us ought to be
oriented toward that. Having this as our
Family name should serve as this
reminder for each and every one of us.
Also, there is power in the Holy and Most
Sacred Name of Jesus. Why wouldn’t we
want to include His name in our Family?

What a beautiful day it was…
this past Tuesday when Fr. Phil was officially
installed as pastor of our parish family. We are so
fortunate to have a good shepherd and a good
leader as Fr. Phil leading us. There were plenty of
people representing all three parishes at the mass
in which Bishop Bob Fisher presided.
Update on me...
So many people continue to ask me if I have
heard any word on my departure. To answer
briefly; no I have not. I am very much at peace
with the current situation and very happy that
God has given me more time to serve my family
here at Holy Family, St. Augustine, and St. Mary
Mystical Rose. I truly have grown to love these
churches and my prayer now is that I may stay
until Christmas.
I am still living part time in Ray Township
and part time in Armada. The Diocese wants
priests to live together and has asked me to
continue to live with Fr. Chris, the Pastor at St.
Francis where I was living before. Depending on
the day and the amount of stuff going on
determines where I lay my head at night. It
reminds me of the scripture passage from Luke
9:58
“Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds
have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to
lay his head.”
Please continue to pray for me. I am
overwhelmed by your patience and your
generosity that you have shown to me in these
last two months.
An invitation...
Over the last year and a half I have really
fallen in love with the Traditional Latin Mass
(TLM). The TLM traces it’s beginning back to
the third century. It was the Mass that many of
our older generation grew up attending and was
the mass of our ancestors and every saint we ask
for their intercession.
In 1965 Holy Mother Church reformed the
secret liturgy to give us a modernized condensed
sacrifice of Calvary that we have today. The
“new Mass” is beautiful and glorious and we
offer it so well here with our praise to God in so
many ways.
I have offered the TLM on many occasions
but not a Solemn sung Mass. I will be offering
my fist Solemn High Mass on December 3rd at
Old St. Mary’s in Greektownone of Detroit’s
most beautiful churches. Invite everyone to come
to the church if they are able to for a beautiful
celebration of Mass.
I especially invite those who have never been
to a Traditional Latin Mass. It will be a wonderful
encounter with Jesus Christ and to see the historic
way in which we as Catholics worshiped.
Perhaps we can get a nice carpool going to travel
down.

they have been
trained up well at home as well as at
their school.
It is my joy to bring each one of
them to a richer understanding of their
Catholic faith and how to recognize
that through the traditions of the
church, each of us are drawn into a
close personal relationship with Jesus
and God the Father.
This week and last, we had many
classroom discussions in between
textbook work and teaching stories. I
was surprised to see the hunger for
learning their faith they displayed at
this age. This week, we begin the
Circle of Grace program, which many
of you are familiar with. The 7
th
and
8
th
grade students will without a doubt
have much to talk about when we
reach the topic of social justice. Our
world gives us many examples of
good and bad. It is our students at
St. Augustine that have been trained
up and are the Christian soldiers
ready to teach the good news of the
Gospel to the world with their
knowledge and by their way of life.
They are told each day that their
hands and feet are the hands and feet
of Jesus and just how fundamental
they are to spread His message of
love. They are truly special.
God bless your week.

 For the Parishioners
What does it mean
to have a Mass "offered"
for someone?
An individual may ask a priest to offer a
Mass for several reasons: for example, in
thanksgiving, for the intentions of another
person (such as on a birthday), or, as is most
common, for the repose of the soul of
someone who has died. One must never forget
the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice
of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. Pope
Leo XIII in his encyclical "Mirae
caritatis" (1902) beautifully elaborated this
point and emphasized the connection between
the communion of saints with the Mass: "The
grace of mutual love among the living,
strengthened and increased by the sacrament
of the Eucharist, flows, especially by virtue of
the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong
to the communion of saints." When a priest
offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions:
First, to offer the Mass reverently and validly
in accord with the norms of the Church.
Second, to offer the Mass in union with the
whole Church and for the good of the whole
Church. Third, to offer the Mass for a
particular intention, such as the repose of the
soul of someone who has died.
The special personal fruits of the Mass
benefit the celebrating priest who acts in the
person of Christ in offering the Mass and to
the people who are in attendance and
participate in the offering of the Mass. These
fruits are both extensively and intensively
finite, since each of us is finite. Therefore, the
more a Mass is offered, the more benefit is
conferred.

offices.
