Literally What is a thermostat? A device that control temperature of a

machine such as a vehicle. Its fitted between engine and radiator.

Project theories: Transformation, Flow and Value

generationProject Management: Management-as-planning Management-as-organising Execution-Classical communication

theory and Language/action perspective. Management –as-Control – thermostat

model

Thermostat model is identical to the feedback control model as defined in modern control theory.(Ogunnaike and Ray,1994).

Thermostat model is also called cybernetic model of management control. It consists of the three elements(Hofstede,1978)

There is a standard of performance. Performance is measured at the

output(or input) The possible variance between standard

and measured value is used for correcting the process so that the standard can be reached.

Thermostat model is related to controlling process of projects.

The PMBOK guide divides core processes of controlling into two subprocesses namely:

Performance reporting – this is where corrections are prescribed for the executing process.

Overall change control – this is where changes are prescribed for the planning process.

Thermostat model is clearly embodied in the closed loop of planning, execution and controlling. It has been the dominating view on management in the 20th century. However it does not address finding reasons for deviations, eliminating those root causes.
