Caritas Jerusalem Director Appeals to Pope to Hold Prayer Vigil

Asks That It Be Dedicated to the Holy Land VATICAN CITY, July 25, 2014 (Zenit.org) - The director of Caritas Jeru-salem has launched an appeal to Pope Francis to hold a prayer vigil for the Holy Land, as was done for Syria and Iraq earlier this month. Father Raed Abusahliah said he is hoping that next Saturday and Sunday could serve as the occasion, Fides reported Tuesday. This weekend, the faithful in all the parishes of Jordan, Palestine and Israel will pray for the restoration of peace and fundraise on behalf of the people of Gaza. "In this regard,” Fr. Raed said, “I launch a humble appeal to Pope Francis: may you convene a vigil of prayer and fasting for peace in the Holy Land, as you did for Syria.” Based on the conviction that “nothing is impossible for him who believes,” the Vatican held an evening prayer vigil for peace in Syria and Iraq on July 4 which welcomed many Catholics from throughout Rome, as well as Vatican senior offi-cials. A gesture similar to this, the priest of Ramallah believes, would be a comfort to “all the people who inhabit this land, the land of Jesus,” who are “tired of living in fear and pain." Along with Caritas Internationalis, Caritas Jerusalem has launched another appeal for projects and long-term initiatives to be started immediately following the cease-fire. Fr Raed said they are looking for funds of over one million euro. Almost 1,300 Palestinians, the vast majority of whom are Muslims, have taken shelter in the Greek Orthodox church of Saint Porphyrius in Gaza in order to escape the bombing of the Israeli army. Seven hundred others have found refuge in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza. Since the beginning of the Israeli military "Protective Edge" operation, more than 130,000 people have been displaced, of whom 70,000 are gathered in UN schools. So far, over 700 Palestinians have died. Adding to this, healthcare facilities in the Gaza Strip are unable to cope with many casualties totalling more than 4,000. In these days, the survival of these people depends mainly on the efforts of rescue and assistance carried out by Caritas Jerusalem. The Israeli military has defended its actions on the grounds that the Palestinian militant group Hamas has been firing rockets at Israel from schools and hospitals, thereby using innocent civilians as human shields. “In that terrible situation, our 18 operators are working tirelessly with our mobile medical centers that operate in schools and distribute survival kits to families massed in schools, in collaboration with the United Nations," Fr. Raed said. He added they are currently responsible for taking care of the refugees present in the Orthodox Church and the Catho-lic school. "We distribute food and hot meals, milk and basic necessities for the children, fuel for electric generators,” he said. (D.C.L.)

We pray for the soul of ; Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,

And may perpetual light shine upon him.

INFANTS / TODDLERS OF SLAVIC VILLAGE A billboard along the highway gives us the stark facts....1 in 5 children in America face hunger EVERY day! Our religion teaches us that we are all children of God...that we are our brother's keeper. Whatso-ever we do unto one another we do unto God! The thoughtful generosity of an anonymous parishioner who donated $100 to purchase food items for our children has made that teaching a reality. No words can thank you enough! Just think how many chil-dren will have food on their table because " some-one cared"! You too can help just by donating a can of soup or a box of cereal....every little bit helps! Open your hearts to the cries of a hungry child! Please take time to "Remember Me." August 3rd. Is a drawing for Mertie's strudel (fresh or frozen)....just donate...help fill our baskets and enter the drawing with each donation you make.

FESTIVALS of Interest 2014 Yes, it’s that time of the year again when we begin to think of festivals! The three local Polish parishes are all gearing up for the 2014 season as we speak, all sched-uled for the first weekends of the respective months as is customary.

August 1,2,3: St. Casimir (THIS WEEKEND) September (Labor Day weekend): St. John Cantius

Cultural Gardens One World Festival: Sept. 13, 14th October 3,4,5: St. Stanislaus

With regards to our festival we ask those who have helped in the past to PLEASE consider helping again! Those who have not, we ask that you consider joining us this year! It requires a lot of hands and backs and pa-tience, but it all benefits our parish. The bands have already been booked, the raffle tickets are being printed, the different sub-committees will soon begin to meet! Before you know it October will be here! Then the heat bill fund will be replenished anew!

PIERWSZE CZYTANIE

Stąd też spragnieni – to ci, którzy pragną zbawienia,

Posłuch wobec Boga i

korzystanie z Jego zbawienia – to warunki życia, nowego, wiecznego Przymierza i łask (przywilejów) przyrzec-

zonych ongiś Dawidowi, zwłaszcza pokoju i bezpieczeństwa. Święty Paweł stosuje ten wiersz do Chrystusa

(Dz 13,34).

DRUGIE CZYTANIE

Bóg daje człowiekowi wszystko – najdroższego Syna swego. Skoro ludzkość jest tak obdarowana, to kto

będzie miał odwagę wystąpić przeciw dzieciom Bożym? Naraziłby się przecież na gniew Boży.

EWANGELIA

Opowiadanie o rozmnożeniu chleba: dialog z apostołami i bijąca w oczy dysproporcja pomiędzy liczbą chle-

bów, a liczbą nakarmionych do syta ludzi i nakaz sadzania ich grupami po sto i po pięćdziesiąt, podkreślają

wielkość Jezusowego czynu i wymowę znaku, że Jezus może wszystko.

Wspanialej Niedzieli!
