To the Class of2000

When you first arrived on campus, you were strangers with a common goal to pursue your studies and intellectual interest in the arena of higher educa¬ tion. Four years later you are no longer strangers, you are now alumni of a world class institution. As your undergraduate career draws to a close, you have accomplished something truly magnificent. I would like to congratula! and thank each one of you for committing yourselves these last four years t(; much more than just your studies. In addition to being dedicated scholars, you have also been community activists, student leaders, athletes, concerne citizens and above all, friends to each other. You have prepared yourselves wisely for the future ahead of you, and I have no doubt you will continue to make your alma mater proud.

& - i-l i

I hope that you find yourselves returning often to Tufts in the coming years; you are always welcome here. The faculty and friends you leave behind wai to hear from you, we want to share your good news. You are a part of a gen¬ eration linked by the internet and superior technology. Keep in touch with your friends on the Hill and your fellow alumni all over the world. 1

Always remember that this University has a rich and wonderful history and that you are an integral part of it.

John DiBiaggio President

'lie remarkable attention paid by all of us to the end of the century and the end of the t illennium will truly impact you and your class. You have been reminded, even isaulted, with being the first graduates to move into the 21st century. The expectations t e high: comfort and ability to lead in the new age of global information; increased responsibilities to deal with social ills by being part of an active citizenry; and ommitment to lifelong learning in an era of incredibly rapid change.

Challenges indeed, but, as Tufts graduates, you are well prepared not only to cope but nso to lead. Your liberal education, with its emphasis on critical thinking, a broad range « communication skills, and the ability to live and flourish in an internationally focussed 'orld, are the requisite skills for global leadership in the new millennium. I know I beak for all in the Tufts community when I voice confidence in your prospects to be laders in such an environment.

j s with Tufts, may your reach truly exceed your grasp.

TUFTS UNIVERSITY

To the Class of 2000:

Well, there it is: the Class of 2000. You are the first class to

carry the designation of the new millennium. Knowing as many of

you as I do, I believe this is very appropriate. Your class had

a deeper, more mature sense of historical perspective and significance

than any class in my memory. You demonstrated more historical

curiosity, a keener understanding of the events of this century.

You were the first class to seek some sort of connection with the

past, particularly the two cataclysmic world wars which marked this

century's tragic confrontations in the name of nationalism and

ideology. You used your years at Tufts to prepare yourselves to

become citizens of the world. While remaining quintessentially

Americans, you seemed to understand that technology was going to

force you to accept a more global kind of life, one which will

take you and your families far from these shores. You are adventurers,

explorers, and people of action. I would like to be a fly on the

wall, when you are finished making your mark on this earth, because

I believe that we will be vastly better off as human beings for you

having made a difference to humanity.

The Observer is Tufts' 104 year-old

newspaper. As the weekly paper at Tufts,

The Observer prides itself on giving in-

depth coverage of campus news and

sports. It has over 30 editors and a vari¬

ety of writers and reporters. The Observer

is the oldest student organization on cam¬

pus and has been the home of several

prominent journalists.

This year Queen's Head & Arti¬

choke celebrates its tenth year as Tufts

Journal of Art and Literature. The

magazine comes out once every semes¬

ter and publishes student artwork, po¬

etry, prose, and short stories. Students

get involved in a variety of ways in¬

cluding submission, selection, produc¬

tion and readings.

Walk into any classroom, any din¬

ing hall, any study spot at Tufts and

you're sure to see someone reading the

Tufts Daily. Although we're probably

most known for our crossword puzzles,

students and faculty alike also turn to

the Daily for campus news, sports, en¬

tertainment and opinion pieces. We are

an entirely student-run publication with

a staff of approximately 50 editors, not

to mention all of the writers, office

workers, and delivery people who help

the paper come out every day. Founded

in February 1980, this marks the 20th

anniversary year of the paper. For those

of us who are a part of the Daily, the

paper is more than just an activity; it is

a true family and a home away from

home. From Friday meetings, to trips

to IHOP, to basketball against the Ob¬

server and softball against the Senate,

the Daily has a culture all its own.

WMFO exist as a student/commu¬

nity radio station for the Tufts commu¬

nity and the surrounding area. Our call

letters are WMFO and we are located

at 91.5 on the FM dial. We are entirely

student-run.

As an organization, Association of

Latin American Students is perhaps

the most unique one on campus. Not

only does it embrace the tremendous

cultural and geographical diversity

that underly Latino relations; it also

works as a voice to a population with

a diverse mix of political and cultural

needs.

The Latino population on Tufts is

growing, and with it ALAS as well.

La Casa Latina was perhaps the first

spinoff of the concern for Latino cul¬

ture housing. From there it has been

the parent of the Latino Center, from

where the work of developing better

student relations is done by its direc¬

tor.

In the long run ALAS hopes to be

the foreground of change while main¬

taining a vibe of approachability on

the Tufts Campus. Whether it is

through sharing poetry, holding a

dance party, or a forum concentrat¬

ing on Latino student issues we have

and will continue to try to cover the

spectrum of needs our population

feels are pressing.

Just as the club has always been

composed of Carribean, Central

South American, and Mexican na¬

tionals and American-born Latinos, it

will continue to work towards provid¬

ing some common ground for enjoy¬

ment and enlightenment in their

Tufts experience.

The goal of Asian Community at

Tufts is to unify the Asian groups on

campus by raising political awareness

concerning Asian/Asian-American is¬

sues in the Tufts community. This

goal is achieved by providing vari¬

ous political, educational, and social

events that serve to educate and unite

the Asian community at Tufts. We

host the Asian-American Culture

Show, Pan-Asian Club Night, and are

currently trying to bring a big name

Asian speaker to Tufts.

Tufts Association of South

Asians (TASA) is one of Tufts

University's largest student orga¬

nizations. TASA's main mission is

to provide cultural, educational,

and religious programming for

students interested in South Asia.

Lectures, poetry readings, con¬

certs, theater productions, reli¬

gious festivals, and culture shows

are examples of the programming

TASA organizes. While TASA's

programming is geared primarily

towards South Asians, the organi¬

zation strives to make its events

as accessible as possible to the

greater Tufts community and the

Boston community.

Now in its fifth year, the Tufts

Filipino Cultural Society (FCS)

continues to offer Filipino culture

to the Tufts community, promote

awareness of Filipino and Fili¬

pino-American issues and create a

network for all those interested in

Filipino culture on and off the

Tufts campus. Since the club’s in¬

ception, membership has grown

immensely in both number and di¬

versity. Members bond through

participation in some of the club’s

many events. Major FCS activi¬

ties include a Parents’ Weekend

Reception, involvement with Dis¬

trict I (the Boston conglomerate of

all collegiate Filipino cultural or¬

ganizations) and participation in

the F.I.N.D. Conferences (the Fili¬

pino Inter-Collegiate Networking

Dialogue). Through Philippine In¬

ternational Aid, FCS also proudly

sponsors the education of two teen-

aged girls in the Philippines. Of,

course, we can’t forget about

Piestang Filipino, the club’s unique

display of traditional Filipino

dance, music and food. The club

is a wonderful medley of person¬

alities and talent, the FCS dedi¬

cated officers and members will

ensure that the family continues to

strengthen and grow.

The purpose of the Interna¬

tional Club is to promote foreign

culture on campus and integrate in¬

ternational and American students,

so that mutual understanding can be

achieved. Social events include the

International Cruise, the Intercul-

tural Festival, and helping out at

Tufts' International Orientation.

Alpha Omicron Pi’s main purpose

is fun and friends, but we are also very

big in philanthropy. We sponsored our

first ever “Run for the Roses 5K and

Raffle” on October 23rd with all ben¬

efits for arthritis research, our national

philanthropy. It was a huge success and

we had great time putting it together.

This past Halloween we did our annual

Trick-or-Treating for Cans with ZBT

to benefit a local soup kitchen. We col¬

lected over 1275 cans! In the spring,

we look forward to our Valentine “Help

AOII Lick Arthritis” lollipop sale and

formal rush. On the outside, Alpha

Omicron Pi looks like an ordinary

“club” of 60 girls. What makes us spe¬

cial can’t be described or explained.

AOII sisterhood is unconditional, like

family. Organizations can be friends,

but AOII are sisters.

Zeta Beta Tau is a fraternity of just

under forty brothers, dedicated to shar¬

ing a common commitment while en¬

joying lifelong friendships. ZBT is a

diverse brotherhood of Tufts males

whose extracurricular involvement

spans the spectrum of activities at

Tufts. The brothers of Zeta Beta Tau

are dedicated to the university, to the

community and to each other. Whether

it is a spontaneous gathering of broth¬

ers at 126 Packard Avenue, initiating

new men into the fraternity, going away

on retreat together, or organizing phil¬

anthropic events such as the 50 inning

softball marathon (in which proceeds

go to the Make A Wish Foundation),

ZBT offers to its brothers the opportu¬

nity to make lasting friendships and to

serve the community and the school.

One brother describes the fraternity

best, “When I first met the brothers, I

realized that they had a bond with each

other that I had with few people at

Tufts. It was that sense of brotherhood

and trust that convinced me that I

wanted to be a brother of Zeta Beta Tau

Fraternity.” To its brothers, ZBT is

about brotherhood, trust and charity.

Since 1998, the Omicron Chapter of

Zeta Beta Tau has made itself known

as a powerhouse of excellence at Tufts

University. Our brothers have distin¬

guished themselves as true campus

leaders, heading organizations such as

the Inter-Greek Council, Concert

Board, TUTV, The Zamboni, The Tufts

Daily, and others. As a fraternity we

have dedicated ourselves to volunteer

service (running major events through¬

out the year for charities like the

Somerville Battered Women Shelter

and The Make-A-Wish Foundation), as

well as to excelling academically. Talk

to any one of us and you’ll see why we

say that it’s great to be a Zebe!

The Inter-Greek Council is the

governing body for the ten fraternities

three sororities, and one Co-ed Greek

House at Tufts University. We workj

closely with every Greed Organization

on campus, the Inter-Fraternity Coun¬

cil (IFC), the Pan-Hellenic Council

(PHC), and the Dean of Students Of¬

fice. Through these numerous organi¬

zations, we oversee Fraternity and So¬

rority Rush and plan events including Fall

Formal, Homecoming Block Party, anc

Spring Block Party. We have an active

IGC-Judiciary Board that handles mosi

problems that arise within the Greek

Community and we have a students ac¬

tive on the Dean of Student’s Committee

on Social Fraternity and Sorority Life

(CFS). Our executive board has mem¬

The Fencing Club exists as a club

sport for men and a program whereby

people interested in the sport of fenc¬

ing can come and learn about fencing,

and how to fence, and ultimately can

compete with us in the NESCAC con¬

ference. We coexist with the Women’s

Varsity Fencing Team, working to¬

gether to improve our skills and reach

fencing to people interested. Last year

the men’s team placed fourth in the

conference and the women’s team tied

for first. We compete in three weap¬

ons: foil, epee, and saber.

The Tufts Mountain Club is a non-

Senate funded organization with over

300 members, making it the second

largest group on campus. The Moun¬

tain Club’s prupose is to provide a form

for nautre interested souls at Tufts. Our

activities include regular training and

excursions in technical rock climbing,

weekend-long trips throughout the wil¬

derness of New England for warm and

cold weather backpacking, kayaking,

canoeing, white-water rafting, ice

climbing, skiing (both cross-country

and downhill), showshoeing, hiking,

skydiving, spelunking, mountain bik¬

ing, and other diversions. The members

of the Club are the caretakers of the

‘Loj,’ a log cabin style building located

on a large plot of forested land in North

Woodstock,New Hampshire. Club mem¬

bers and other Tufts students can pay a

small fee to spend a weekend of rug¬

ged-style relaxation away from classes

and the uncivilized urban world of Bos¬

ton. The club is organized and run by a

member-elected board of executives,

who undertake such responsibilities as

organizing trips and events, the upkeep

of the Loj, and care of Club equipment.

The Taekwondo Club is a very

hard-working and fun oriented group.

We enjoy our vigorous workouts,

which keep us in great shape and also

prepare us to fight against other

schools. We’ve had great memories to¬

gether which include flap jacks and

forties, our annual 24 hour pre-spring

fling party, and regular get togethers at

Neha’s house, torturing her cat and

“walking the dog.” Although we’ve

suffered our share of dislocated fingers,

fractures, kicks below the belt, run-ins

with wooden boards, sprained ankles,

and many nights praying to the

porcelian gods, it’s been great and

there’s always more to come.

“Fencing attracts people who are look¬

ing for a new way to keep fit and to

learn discipline. You can only improve

if you’re focused, and I think people

know that once they show up, so they

want to try harder to become

competative. It’s one of the few sports

you can pick up when you get to col¬

lege, and be a champion by the time you

leave.” - Saeed Farouky

The Poets Society is a newly resur¬

find the writers hiding on campus and in

other Boston schools and bring them to¬

terms, we are trying to build a literary

community that spans the gap between

students of different Alma Maters and

those that move in different campus

circles. To facilitate this, we are pursu¬

that meet weekly to discuss and critique

one another's work. Weekend excursions

allow us to explore the literary history of

Boston and the physical world beyond

hope to publish the first annual anthol¬

The Tufts Democrats has two pur¬

poses, to represent the Democratic party

and increase political awareness on

campus. We sponsor lectures by such

people as former Governor Michael

Dukakis. We have worked with several

political campaigns, sponsored voter

registartion drives and debated the death

penalty with the Tufts Republicans. Our

members have written viewpoints in

campus publications and worked for

elected officials such as Senator John

Kerry, President Bill Clinton, and many

others. We also work with college

democrats all across Massachusetts.

Friends of Israel is an organization

that seeks to promote awareness about

Israeli politics and culture. Although

many think we are only a political

groups, we also are cultural group. We

do a variety of things from bringing

speakers to campus to talk about the US

and Israel to having Israeli Dancing and

Falafel nights to having Hebrew speak¬

ing tables at Brown and Brew. This year

we plan to bring a Congressman to cam¬

pus to speak about the US relationship

with Israel or newly elected prime min¬

ister Barak.

Oxfam Cafe is a comfy student-run

cafe, tucked away in back of Miller

Hall. Run by nine managers and over

40 dedicated volunteers, the Cafe is

both a quiet and cozy comer to study in

and a pice in which to hold meetings,

poetry readings, art exhibitions. The

Cafe is unique in that it donates all of

its profits to Oxfam America, a NGO

committed to finding long-lasting so¬

lutions to global hunger and poverty.

Friday night it provides a home to the

happenin’, music filled Midnight Cafe.

Oxfam Collective, Oxfam Cafe’s

sister organization, shares it’s mission

to support Oxfam America’s efforts to

find long-term solutions to hunger and

poverty in Third World Countries. The

Collective organizes a 24 hour Fast in

the fall and a Hunger Banquet in the

spring. Both events on campus serve to

raise funds for and awareness of

Oxfram’s work.

Tufts Men Against Violence are a

group of Tufts men dedicated to creat¬

ing social change through personal ac¬

tivism, self-exploration, and education.

Tufts Republicans is an organiza¬

tion devoted to protecting the rights of

each individual and the philosophy of

conservatism, fiscally and socially.

The mission of United Leaders for

a Better Tomorrow, a nonprofit, pub¬

lic service organization, is to promote

statesmanship in politics across the

country. United Leaders seeks to get

more college students interested in a

career of public service and to show

people that you can enter the field of

politics without compromising your

beliefs.

The Leonard Carmichael Society,

Tufts' community service umbrella or¬

ganization, surpassed all expectations

in this, its 41st year. LCS's 40 pro¬

grams, which are completely student-

run, were staffed by over 85 talented

and dedicated Jumbos this year. These

programs offered a variety of commu¬

nity service activities related to the is¬

sues of hunger, homelessness,

mentoring, literacy, education, health,

and other special interests. Since the

spring of 1999, LCS has expanded on

the diversity of its programming by ac¬

cepting three new programs: Kids to

College, Tufts Elementary Science En¬

richment Program (T.E.S.E.P.), and

College High School Alliance: A Nexus

for Creative Education (C.H. A.N.C.E.).

This diversity, coupled with an increas¬

ingly civic-minded student body, caused

LCS's volunteer membership to soar

above the 1000 mark last spring for the

first time in over 20 years.

LCS welcomed the Class of 2003

and kicked off the year with some

"M.A.D."ness at the Made A Difference

Rally and volunteer trips held during

Fall Orientation. Over 250 incoming

freshmen were inspired to get involved

thanks to guest speakers President

DiBiaggio and Robyn Gittleman. Hun¬

dreds of Jumbos enjoyed a night out on

the town on October 1st compliments

of the 4th annual LCS Semiformal.

This year's event raised over $4500 for

the Welcome Project, a community-

based organization in Somerville.

LCS members also planned more

than a week's worth of concentrated

LCS events during mid-October called

Into the Streets. More than 30 events

were offered to the Tufts community

during these nine days. These events

focused on both providing volunteer op¬

portunities aimed at addressing the

needs of the surrounding communities

as well as educational events which

attempted to address the problems in th

communities and potential solutions t

them. In addition, LCS continued t

increase its campus-wide appeal b

publishing four more installments of th

recently created LCS newsletter1

Leonard's Letter.

The past few years have been on

long success story for the Leonar

Carmichael Society. LCS would lik

to thank all the Jumbos who took tl

time to make a difference this year

each one of you is a hero. And a vei

special thanks to the Class of 2000.

Because of your compassion for otl

ers and dedication to your communit

you have changed countless lives in tl

course of your years at Tufts. Aiwa};

remember where you got this passic

from, and be sure to spread it whe|

ever you go.

Best of luck in all you do.

Programming Organ AppleJam, Midnight Cafe, Off-Hill Council, Programming Board, Class Councils, Concert Board, Entertainment Board, Film Series, Lecture Series, Spirit Collation

Senior Class Council is comprised

of a group of seniors that work all year

to bring activities and class spirit to the

Tufts campus.

The mission of the Concert Board

is to provide quality music entertain¬

ment for the Tufts Community by open¬

ing our stage to both local and national

music arts. Wc produce four concerts

each year, the largest of which is Spring

Fling on the President’s Lawn. Wc also

run an annual “Battle of the Bands” to

allow Tufts-based bands to compete to

open for larger headlining acts. As a

board, we vote on which acts to bring

ton Tufts, as well as work security for

each concert. CBK.A!

Tufts University Spirit Coalition

is responsible for improving the sense

of community and general morale at

Tufts through social programming.

Our goal is to increase the spirit and

Tufts pride on campus by helping plan

Orientation, Homecoming, Winter

Weekend, and Spring Fling, in addition

to many other events.

The Tufts American Institute of

Chemical Engineers is an active

group of the undergraduate chemical

engineering students. We organize

field trips to local plants to give mem¬

bers a better understanding of what

chemical engineers can do. AIChE

serves the students by bringing in

guest speakers from industry, foster¬

ing a cooperative environment for

students to work together, and creat¬

ing a network of advice and help for

underclassmen to be guided by older

students in their journey through

chemical engineering at Tufts. We

also hold several fun events, includ¬

ing a trip to the Boston Museum of

Science, an annual trip to Busch-

Brewery in the spring, and a "subs

and study" night during finals, where

ChemEs can pool their knowledge

over snacks and a party sub. It's been

a great year for AIChE, and we hope

for many more!

The American Society of Me¬

chanical Engineers gives students a

chance to delve deeper into the field

of mechanical engineering than is

otherwise possible in the classroom.

Through ASME, students can work

on hands-on projects to enhance their

skills such as the Soapbox Derby or

the Oxfam Hunger Project. Students

also have the opportunity to visit

companies, go on tours, and attend

seminars in an effort to find the

branch of mechanical engineering

that best suits the individual.

It is the goal of the Tufts Univer¬

sity Pre-Veterinary Society to pro¬

vide a resource for pre-veterinary stu¬

dents from which they may attain

knowledge about veterinary applica¬

tion requirements, the veterinary ap¬

plication process, and volunteer op¬

portunities. We also work to promote

veterinary knowledge and animal

welfare through current veterinary

topic, community involvement, and

fund raising.

The mission of the Society of Phys¬

ics Students is to provide an enhanced

academic and social experience for Tufts

students interested in physics and to pro¬

mote general public interest in physics.

The Society of Women Engineers

is a group of female engineers repre¬

senting women's interests in engineer¬

ing. We are aimed at engineering out¬

reach to younger girls, professional de¬

velopment and guidance for female en¬

gineers at Tufts and social activities to

provide unity among the engineering

community. Some of our main events

include a student-faculty dinner and

awards ceremony, various seminars and

conferences involving networking, and

a girl scout badge workshop. We have

a lot of fun and over 100 members!

Asian Christian Fellowship, Catholic Center, Christian Fellowship, Episcopal Student Fellowship, Hillel, Islamic Society, Orthodox Christian Fellowship, Protestant Student Fellowship

As the second largest student orga¬

nization on campus, Hillel holds nu¬

merous events for the entire Tufts com¬

munity. Being the center for Jewish

life on campus, we provide services and

meals for Shabbat as well as for all of

the holidays throughout the year. But

our programming is not restricted to

these religious activities. We plan a

yearly semiformal, have a night of jazz

and fondue, bring in speakers from

around the country, hold a weekly text

study, and bring together hundreds of

Jewish students from different back¬

grounds at over two hundred programs

throughout the year. This year was the

first for our Tzedek Hillel Initiative,

-—--at-—-——---

bringing together social justice and

Jewish learning in a meaningful way.

This year was also the fourth year for

our popular freshman retreat, the third

year we sent a group of students to the

United States Holocaust Memorial

Museum (in conjunction with the

LGBT Center), and the first time that

we have ever sent 60 students to Israel

absolutely for free! Hillel is a place

where all are welcome, and we con¬

stantly look forward to meeting new

people and having them involved in our

wonderful programming.

The Orthodox Christian Fellow¬

ship was formed to bring Orthodox

Christian students together who are in¬

terested in learning about living the

New Testament Faith through discus¬

sions, prayer, services, and fellowship.

Our OCF is made up of Eastern Ortho¬

dox Christians from a variety of ethnic

backgrounds (Greek, Russian, Roma¬

nian, Serbian, Lebanese, Egyptian,

Ukrainian, Armenian, Bulgarian, Alba¬

nian, Ethiopian, Syrian, and American)

and gives Orthodox Christian students

an opportunity to grow in Faith and

Tradition. Our purpose is to foster a

sense of community between all stu¬

dents of the Orthodox faith and to de¬

velop a fruitful relationship between

them and to better campus life through

fellowship, social events, lectures, re¬

treats, church visitations, and Orthodox

Christian Liturgy and worship.

Tufts Protestant Student Fellow¬

ship is an on campus group, designed

to meet the needs of all forms of prot-

estant worship, including service, bible

study, retreats, and dinners. Main ac¬

tivities include: Fall Concert (free ad¬

mission), Spring retreat, weekly service

(Epicopal Priest and Fold rock guitar¬

ist Sunday 6:30), and various dinners.

"Yes, we have a yearbook"

It wasn't easy. At the beginning of the year, the yearbook staff consisted of one unsuspecting editor-in-chief. Prospects looked good, however, after the first activities fair; it looked like there was a great interest in the Yearbook and it seemed the book would go off with out a hitch. Over a rela¬ tively short period of time, meeting attendaence dwindled. Soon, the staff was down to its core of nine very enthusiastic, dedicated and hard-work¬ ing editors.

Although there were a few problems - late nights, late deadlines, computer crisis' - everyone pulled together to produce one of the best books Tufts has seen in recent memory. Awareness and interest were raised across the campus and record sales were recorded. All of these successes despite it's small size and lack of university yearbook experience, the Jumbo staff persevered and sur¬ passed expectations.

I would like to takes this time to thank my staff for all of the hard work and time they poured into this book. The yearbook is a memory book.

Although its utility may seem unclear now, 10, 20 or even 30 years down the line, I promise that it will be pulled out of the back of the closet, dusted off and carefully leafed through, bringing back smiles and (hopefully) laughter, in remembrance c four amazing years at Tufts. When looking throug this book at the next reunion, remember the awe¬ some staff who helped make the 2000 Jumbo pos¬ sible:

Erica Chazin, Rina Eisenberg, Diana Fischman, Emily Harris, Jocelyn Hall, Laura Horwitz, Melissa Lobel, Jenna Koch, Liz Mullane, Missy Pope and Maria Staroselsky.

A very BIG thank you to a few more people who, without them, there would be no yearbook:

Tom Kelley, Jostens Representative; Caren Orlick-Korin, DaVor Studio lifesaver; Paul Sweeney, Sports Information Coordinator; Frank Nocito, Budget Coordinator; TCU Treasury; and Jodie Nealley and Dot McAveeney, Office of Stu¬ dent Activities.

Thank you everyone, without you this would n< have been possible!

Kristin Romandetti, Editor-In-Chief '00 Jumbo

"The best thing about yearbook is even though we're small and not that many people know about it, we have a lot of energy

Being part of the yearbook staff is a great way to ecome more involved and learn more about Tufts

University. Having worked on the clubs and cganizations section, I've discovered a lot of clubs I lever new existed. Tufts really has a lot to offer to a

variety of students." Jocelyn Hall

MEMORIES

After having 3 sons, this was Dad's last chance for a daughter and Mom desperately wanted another child. Months later out "popped" our beautiful Marina with a full head of dark brown hair--what a fabulous emotional experience it was. Mom breast fed you for 8 months--it was hard to stop, she loved you so much. As you began to grow, walk and talk, you uttered your first word, "self," a word that has transcended your entire life.

Dad loved to feed you cheerios, remember. "That stupid little girl with that dumb face cannot get us, we are quicker than she is. Hey watch out, here she comes! Aughhhh!"

Then came nursery school--what an angel you were, but tucking you in sometimes proved difficult--when we kissed you, we would get an elbow in our face.

Public school was next, what a disaster. With screaming teachers, it was so difficult for you to learn, you were so frustrated. Combining that "c" word with "self' was an impossibility.

Ice skating was fun--you sure enjoyed all your birthdays at Skyrink. Horseback riding was your specialty. Wow! what a jumper, a natural.

You started studying piano when you were tiny, after being inspired by the "Snake Charmer," we always knew you had talent. Sara kept teaching even though you had trouble practicing, but finally you had a breakthrough and how wonderfully you learned to play.

The Dalton School, your middle school/high school, was a fabulous place. It was difficult at first, but you persevered, you had an inner strength that would not quit and you certainly succeeded: First cellist, captain of the soccer and softball teams, the award for athlete of the year and your "One Woman Show." Wow! what a show with its arias, cello and piano concertos. You finally succeeded in fusing your "self with that elusive "c" word.

Finally, came college!! What a shock, you got into Tufts University. You were surprised, but we weren't. We knew the strength of character you had, the will to surmount all obstacles that had and would confront you. It has been a great four years. You certainly expanded your world. You really have grown.

Now that graduation is here you must know how much we love you and how much we have admired your will to succeed, your will to learn. You truly embody the idea of "self and "Confidence.

You are everything any parent or brother could ever want and we thank you for being our daughter and sister and most of all for being yourself!

Jamie Bertner Dear Jamie,

We can’t believe four years have passed,

It’s graduation time.

To let you know how proud we are,

We wrote this little rhyme.

For now it’s time to say good-bye,

Four years at Tufts are gone.

Your parents have no money left,

Say tata, au revoir, so long.

You studied hard for every course,

And got the grades that show,

You aren’t just a pretty face,

Engineering you do know.

Go out in the world and find your niche,

For your talents there’s a place.

We believe you have great potential

To improve the human race.

And some day many years from now

You’ll be a shinning star,

And all will see what we always knew,

How wonderful you are.

All our love,

Mom, Dad and Jaclyn

family always at your side.

Alysse Wurcel Dear Alysse:

In late August of 1996, you journeyed from the “known” in Hamden, Connecticut to explore a new galaxy, Tufts

University. This New World was clearly comprised of a fascinating assortment of “aliens,” all attempting to mask their

butterflies and insecurities. Yet, they, like you, were eager for the opportunity to wear the “Jumbo” emblem. Little by

little, egos were quieted, personal walls came down, and the freshmen conglomerate arrived at two crucial realizations:

that Tufts is an Ivy League school, and the “J.Crew” magazine, a bible. Freshmen then, seniors now, a four-year span

dotted with peaks and valleys.

Lyssie, your graduation with honors is a magnificent achievement. Tufts has provided you with a treasure chest of

knowledge, memories and precious ties that are yours, forever and ever. Despite the fact that you call us “REPUBLI¬

CANS,” we are so proud of your moral conscience, leadership, and community involvement. Your experiences with

Visions, Jazz Band, Tufts Dance Collective, New England Medical Center, Search For A Cure, D.J. Mike, the

Somerville Police (for sociology!), and your adopted Russian family, have all left their imprint on you. And living with

fifteen people over the last four years has taught you the importance of patience, communication and above all, a sense

of humor. Whether you’re called Lyssie, Boombie, Punkey, Tuna, or Gilah-Tequila, you are one fun-loving, remark¬

able person!

Lyssie, as an alumnus of the Class of 2000, embrace the new millennium with hope and fervor. We know that your

heart and mind will guide you through other “galaxies.” As you satellite around, know that we will always be there for

you, and love you dearly.

Best wishes to your group of friends from Carmichael, Miller, and Chetwynd. It has been fun getting to know you

and we look forward to post-Tufts visits! Best of luck - Mom, Dad, Brian and Julie.

Irene Zaki

T o our sensible and sensitive daughter,

whose hard-work and perseverance we have

always admired.

Your sincerity and directness were always

your greatest assets when dealing with people.

Your easygoing and charming

attitude in life made all who have known you

get closer and enjoy your friendship. You are eloquent, outspoken, idealistic, hard-working,

lloving, helpful, honest, kindhearted and

sincere, and most of all you have always

followed your beliefs and integrity.

Our advice today is well known to you since

your childhood, "Praise The Lord God at all

times and ask Him to guide you course. Then

all you do and all you plan will prosper."

Tob. 4:19

One word we would love to whisper in your

ear; In life out there, try to be more realistic

\lthan idealistic, in your search for Utopia.

Life is ready for you with wide open arms to

iembrace you in a future made out of your dreams, lots still to come after you've crossed this first mile¬

stone successfully.

We are quite confident that you will reach the highest levels in a bright future as you always aim for

perfection. | v. v Now that you are on the threshold of actual life, keep your mind open and your ideas flexible. May the

Lord guide you and may His blessings and peace prevail on your future, we wish you all the success.

Thanks for being you and making us the proudest parents on earth.

Mom, Dad & your brother Maurice
