The Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo's Criminal Defense Unit and Appeals and Post Conviction Unit have both full time

Staff Attorney positions scheduled to being in Fall 2022. We further have both "in semester" and summer

internship opportunities available in both units which may be paid or available for school credit.

Following an extensive training period, entry level Staff Attorneys in the Criminal Defense Unit perform trial level

work mainly in Buffalo City Court. Attorneys practice a holistic model of defense paying special attention to the

individualized needs of their clients while focused on positive outcomes both inside and outside the courtroom.

High priority is placed on counseling and client interaction in all phases of the criminal proceed.

Entry level Staff Attorney positions in the Appeals and Post Conviction Unit Staff handle appeals from start to

finish, including reviewing cases, meeting with clients, preparing the brief and oral argument. Most LABB cases

are criminal appeals, but attorneys may be assigned Family Court appeals and other post-judgment matters, as

needed. Strong research and writing skills are required.

In either case, a strong commitment to social justice and a demonstrated interest in criminal defense, particularly

In the Criminal Courts, experienced Assistant Defenders represent qualified individuals charged with

misdemeanor and felony cases in all Town, Village, City and County Courts within Steuben County.

In the Family Courts, the Assistant Defenders represent qualified individuals in Custody; Visitation; Paternity;

Family Offense; Abuse; Neglect; and select Violation of Court Orders proceedings.

In 2020, the Public Defender's Office represented individuals in 1,329 criminal court cases and 396 Family Court

cases.

The Steuben County Public Defender's Office has 8 full time attorneys and 4 part time attorneys.

Distinguishing Features of the Class:

An employee in this class assists the County Public Defender in representing, without charge, by order of a court,

each indigent defendant who is charged with a crime as defined in Section 732-a of the county law in Ulster

County. When representing an indigent defendant, the incumbent counsels and represents him/her at every

stage of the proceedings following arrest and initiates such proceedings as in the incumbent's judgement are

necessary to protect the rights of the accused. The work is performed under guidelines provided by law under the

general direction of the Public Defender. Supervision is exercised over sub-professional, technical and clerical

employees. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:
