樂壇新秀2015召集Calling for YMMers 2015

In 2011, for the first time, Young Music Makers (YMM) took the

format of openly inviting applications. Potential YMMers were

expected to possess performance standard of a professional or pre-

professional level. After the auditions rounds, selected candidates

were invited to record a recital at Radio 4. Our TV section also

featured each of them in a documentary. Through the interviews

and performances in these programmes, coupled with internet

polling and the Final Concert, listeners and viewers were able

to come in touch with these young musicians from different

perspectives.

When submitting their applications, some of the YMMers were

secondary school students, and some were studying music full time.

A few years past, some YMMers have embarked on professional

careers, playing as full time or freelance musicians in orchestras

both local and abroad. Quite a few of them are furthering their

studies in performance programmes. Some others have taken a non-

music programme at university, yet are still active as performers.

Whatever they pursue, YMMers generally find it enlightening to

have taken part in this multi-platform project, and experienced the

unique pathway in becoming a professional performer.

I am pleased to tell all budding instrumentalists and singers, that

after a 3-year hiatus, the project is returning this year. If you are an

accomplished musician who enjoys performing on stage, in front of

microphones and cameras, and would like to further excel in music,

you are welcome to sign up for Young Music Makers 2015. You can

be a soloist or perform in an ensemble, as an instrumentalist or

vocalist, in Western or Chinese repertoire. For more information,

please refer to page 12. Please also visit our website to see what

the previous YMMers have achieved. The application form is

also available for download (rthk.hk/ymm2015). Deadline for

application is 21 May. Act now!

2011年,「樂壇新秀」首次以公開接受報名的方式,透過嚴

格的甄選過程,發掘優秀的年青音樂家。他們的演出須達到

或接近專業水平。第四台為入圍的每位參加者錄製節目,電

視部則為他們各自拍攝專輯。透過當中的訪問和演出,再加

上網上投票及閉幕音樂會,聽眾和觀眾可以全面地認識每一

位年青音樂家。

有部份「樂壇新秀」在報名時仍是中學生,也有是音樂學院

的學生。幾年過後,他們有些已踏上專業演奏的道路,以全

職或兼職樂手的身份受聘於本地和海外樂團;有好幾位正在

本地以及海外進修演奏或演唱;亦有在大學裏選修非音樂主

科,卻仍然熱衷於演出的。無論如何,多位新秀均表示透過

參加這個跨平台的大型項目,他們有機會親身經歷作為一位

專業音樂家的過程,除了獲益良多,箇中感受亦畢生難忘。

很高興告訴各位年輕樂手和演唱者,繼2011及2012年兩屆之

後,「樂壇新秀」今年捲土重來。如果你具備優秀的音樂才

RTHK Quartet Concert at Lingnan University

The RTHK Quartet will re-visit the Lingnan University on 24 March

(Tue). After teaming up with pianist Colleen Lee last year, the four

members of the Quartet, Le Hoai-nam, Selena Choi, Elvis Chan and

Laurent Perrin will work with another guest musician at the campus

concert this year. Andrew Ling, an outstanding local violist, will join

the Quartet in the performance of Brahms’ Quintet in B minor, Op. 115

(originally written for clarinet and string quartet). The Quartet will also

play Ravel’s String Quartet in F.

香港電台弦樂四重奏在3月24日再度到訪嶺南大學。繼去年邀請

鋼琴家李嘉齡携手合作之後,四位成員李海南、蔡芷穎、陳子信

和貝樂安今年會與本地中提琴家凌顯佑合作,演奏布拉姆斯的

B小調五重奏(原為單簧管及弦樂四重奏而寫),並會送上拉威爾

的F大調弦樂四重奏。

李:李德芬吳:吳朝勝

從聽戲曲開始 ⋯⋯

李: 你的音樂事業是從中樂開始的。當年為什麼選擇中樂?

吳: 我在新界較偏僻的村落出生,接觸正規的音樂比較困難,整

條村都沒有鋼琴。那時,我媽媽愛聽戲曲,小時候我也喜歡

隨著她一起聽,所以從小對中樂較有興趣。到了中五,大埔

區有樂器班,經同學介紹,我就參加了其中一班。

李: 最初學習的是琵琶?

吳: 對,學了兩年琵琶後,剛巧有朋友把他的揚琴放在我的家

裡,我覺得很有趣,於是便自學揚琴。之後發現,揚琴似乎

更好玩。1985年,我入讀香港演藝學院時就是主修揚琴,

副修琵琶。

李:演藝學院畢業後,你入讀香港教育學院。當時你對於音樂教

育是否有很強烈的信念,希望年青一代可以多了解和學習中

樂?

吳: 1997年,教職全面學位化,我們都要進修。當初入職時沒

有教育文憑,所以我要在教育學院讀三年夜師課程,修讀教

育理論。

李: 你多才多藝,集演奏、指揮、教學及作曲於一身。你的作曲

啟蒙又是從哪裡來?

吳: 當時在新界,我們這群音樂發燒友曾組織樂團,不過只有

十多人,而且樂譜資源比較少。我常常聆聽錄音,並記錄配

器,也嘗試編配。那時候覺得,原來編配音樂是非常有趣

的。後來,我在清華書院學習音樂理論,漸漸對作曲產生興

趣。

香港的中樂發展和演奏水平

李: 你擔任香港學校音樂及朗誦協會執行委員已有二十年,負責

的範疇主要在中樂方面。你認為在過去二十年裡,香港學校

的中樂發展有甚麼變化?

吳: 一方面是環境的變化,另一方面是曲目選擇和比賽規則的

制定。現在,有很多新的中樂作品出現,獨奏和合奏都有。

評判選材之後,我們會邀請香港的音樂家和教授器樂演奏的

專家協助評定哪首作品適合比賽。我們注意到,在大陸和台

灣,甚至新加坡和馬來西亞,中樂水平提升得很快,尤其是

台灣的水平更為突出。香港的中樂發展和演奏水平相對地提

升得較慢。所以,在選材方面,我們會挑選較深及程度較高

的曲目,希望香港中樂演奏的整體水平能夠提升。

李:香港電台第四台今年再度舉辦「中國樂器獎學金」比賽。去

年我也有出席比賽,覺得水平真的不錯。你覺得呢?

吳: 是的,同學的表現相當不錯。五位入選的同學其實已有很好

的成績,因此都算是精英。

吳朝勝暢談箇中樂趣現為香港學校音樂及朗誦協會執行委員的吳朝勝,是作曲家、指

揮、演奏家和教育家,多年來培育了不少國樂新秀,並致力介紹

及推廣中國民族音樂,以及協助組織學校中樂團,對香港音樂教

育貢獻良多。他與李德芬分享當年如何接觸音樂⋯⋯

比賽最重要的是⋯⋯

李: 我知道你參加過校際音樂節比賽,當年的情

況是怎樣?

吳: 我曾經贏得香港學校音樂節揚琴組公開組的

冠軍。當時只有幾個學生參加。我選了一首

適合我演奏的自選曲,想給自己一個機會,

看看水準如何,獲得冠軍當然很高興。之

後,有一年我還獲得作曲組的冠軍呢!

李: 你樣樣皆能,所以便投入作曲、演奏、編曲

和教學生?

吳: 教學生是往後的事。教育學院畢業之後,我

們始終要找工作,而且我的興趣就是教學。

李: 今年有不少同學參加音樂比賽,你對他們有

什麼寄語?

吳: 我時常跟同學說,比賽是一個渠道,一方面

讓自己清楚達到哪個水平,是多年努力的一

個回報;另一方面就是交流切磋,多留意人

家的長處。我希望今年參加比賽的同學盡力

而為,盡量表現自己,而且不要太在意輸

贏。比賽中獲得的心得和經驗才是最重要。

第六十七屆香港學校音樂節正密鑼緊鼓安排在3月2日至4月1日舉行。第四台會轉播今年學校音樂節的精選內容,節目於逢星期日晚上8時播出,隨後的星期五下午2時重播。詳情請參閱第11頁的播放時間表。

Although the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre (Cloud Gate) has been one of the foremost modern dance companies in Taiwan for the past 40 years, their administrative buildings and rehearsal studios were located in old apartments and worn-out basements spread across several locations. In 2008, a fire burned down Cloud Gate’s rehearsal studio located in the Bali District and all their audio equipment, costumes, props, and production archives were destroyed. With support from the government, Cloud Gate took over former site of Radio Taiwan International and with approximately 4,000 donations from local communities, they built a new theatre, rehearsal studios, offices, and workshop rooms at the new site. On 29 January, Cloud Gate officially moved out from its 17-year-old home in Cloud Gate Lane to the Cloud Gate Theatre in Tamsui near the Hobe Fort.

Since the Cloud Gate Theatre is surrounded by beautiful mountains and seas, the Troupe’s Founder and Artistic Director Lin Hwaimin joked that reporters would be making a special excursion for the long way to visit Cloud Gate. He expressed that the Cloud Gate Theatre is not limited only to long-time Cloud-gaters. By inviting young troupes to perform and organising literary workshops, Lin hopes that the new site will nurture and provide a platform for fresh artistic creations. In April Spring Riot 2015 will be presented by its young division troupe Cloud Gate 2 to mark the Cloud Gate Theatre’s grand opening.

雖然「雲門舞集」成立已經四十年,是台灣著名的現代舞蹈團體,但其辦公室和排練場地卻分隔在不同地區的舊公寓和鐵皮屋內。2008年位於八里烏山頭的排練場因為失火而被燒毀,所有音響器材、鋼琴、歷年的資料、製作圖件、服裝和道具等化為烏有。在四千多項民間捐款以及在政府的協助下,「雲門」得到中央廣播電台在淡水原址的使用權,建造擁有劇場、排練場、辦公室和工作坊的全新劇場。「雲門」1月29日正式告別十七年「雲門巷」的老家,進駐位於淡水滬尾炮台後方的「雲門劇場」。

「雲門劇場」背山面海,景色優美,與環境融合。創辦人和藝術總監林懷民笑言,以後記者探訪「雲門」如出外郊遊。他更表示新劇場並不限於 「雲門」使用,日後會邀請更多新劇團演出,並設立文學講座以培育年輕藝術家以及提供不同類型的創意平台。「雲門劇場」將於4月正式開幕,揭幕節目是由年輕劇團「雲門2」演出的《春鬥2015》。

RTHK Radio 4 Chinese Instruments Scholarship is one

of the highlights in this year’s Schools Music Festival. This

competition is presented by the Hong Kong Schools Music

and Speech Association, with full support from RTHK Radio 4.

Last year, five finalists came to RTHK TV House studio to

perform in front of the Chinese music experts and audiences.

It was a very good experience for these young music talents

to learn from each other. Erhu player Luen Long-yuet was

awarded First Prize. She also received an RTHK trophy and a

scholarship prize.

This year, the competition will take place on 20 March (Friday)

afternoon at RTHK Studio One, Broadcasting House. We look

forward to seeing you there.

由香港學校音樂及朗誦協會主辦,香港電台第四台全力支持

的第二屆「香港電台第四台中國樂器獎學金」將於3月20日

(星期五)下午在香港電台一號錄播室舉行。去年的首屆比賽

吸引了眾多年輕優秀中樂好手參與。他們的演奏水平甚高,

演奏曲目亦相當廣泛。演奏二胡的倫朗悅憑著精湛技巧,豐

富的音樂情感,勇奪冠軍並獲頒香港電台獎杯和獎學金。

今年的賽事亦同樣精彩,幾位晉身是次決賽的同學曾經歷多

番考驗,在入圍賽事中大顯身手。相信透過這個獎學金的活

動,年輕音樂愛好者可互相觀摩,一起進步。我們誠邀你一

同分享他們努力的成果,一同見證新一屆冠軍的誕生!

Here are some project highlights:

• Application is open to candidates who have a HKID card.

• Candidates should be instrumentalists or vocalists performing Western or Chinese fine music repertoire. Instrumental candidates must be born on or after 21 May 1992. Vocal candidates should be born on or after 21 May 1987. For ensembles, the maximum number of members is 12, excluding conductor and accompanist.

• Candidates will audition by sending in a good-quality audio CD, which contains at least two works in contrasting styles with total duration of 10-15 minutes. Please include a list of the composers and titles of the works being performed.

• Short-listed candidates will be invited for a live audition.

• Candidates who pass the live audition will be invited to perform a programme of 15-17 minutes in an RTHK studio. Up to 16 candidates/ensemble groups will be selected. This performance will be recorded. Successful candidates will each be featured in a radio programme, a TV documentary and on RTHK’s website. Subsequent to a public polling and adjudication, up to four candidates will be invited to perform at the Final Concert.

活動概要如下:

• 凡持有香港身份證者均可報名。

• 參加者須以樂器或聲樂,演繹西方或中國美樂作品。器

樂參加者須於1992年5月21日或以後出生;聲樂參加者

須於1987年5月21日或以後出生。若以合奏或合唱的形

式參加,每組人數除指揮及伴奏不能超過十二位。

• 參加者須錄製一張試聽光碟,並演繹最少兩首不同風格

的作品,總長度為10 - 15分鐘。 請隨光碟附上演奏曲目

及作曲家名稱。

• 通過光碟錄音試聽的參加者,將獲邀出席現場試聽。

• 通過現場試聽的參加者將獲邀到香港電台錄播室,演出

15 - 17分鐘的音樂。香港電台會從錄音節目中選出最多

十六個參加單位;入圍新秀將亮相於電台節目、電視專

輯及香港電台網頁。經過公眾投票及評審後,最多四位

新秀將獲邀在閉幕音樂會中演出。

Dutoit Returns冰釋前嫌

Charles Dutoit, who bitterly resigned his position from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (Orchestre S y m p h o n i q u e d e Montréal, OSM) 13 years ago, may return as Guest Conductor. Artistic Director Kent Nagano and Chief Executive Madeleine C a r e a u e x p r e s s hopes that this will be possible. ©

The Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit became the Artistic Director of OSM in 1977. During the twenty-five years of his leadership, the longest tenure in OSM’s history, the Orchestra became an internationally acclaimed ensemble. In 2002, Dutoit initiated dismissal actions against two orchestra members which led to unrest in the Orchestra and musician’s union intervention. Dutoit resigned suddenly in a fit of temperament.

The announcement of Dutoit’s return has brought mixed responses from Orchestra members. Violinist Richard Roberts hopefully said that it would be a sign of healing, while a player who wished to stay anonymous said, ‘the good that he did has been equalised by the hurt that he caused.’

A Dutoit reunion with the OSM is what music lovers all over the world look forward to.

樂手對於杜托華重返蒙特利爾交響樂團的消息持有不同意見。小提琴手李察‧羅拔士對於事情感到樂觀,表示這代表雙方關係的癒合,亦有匿名樂手認為他的功績和所帶來的傷害同樣深遠。

相信全世界的樂迷都期待杜托華與蒙特利爾交響樂團再度合作,重現當年樂團的風采。

This month, Hong Kong opera lovers will be able to enjoy two live productions: a Russian tragic melodrama in the Hong Kong Arts Festival and a famous Viennese operetta at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, on which Rupert Chan will offer us his witty comments and insightful observations. We will also have the chance of enjoying a rare comic heroic drama, a French lyrical romance, and a hilarious comedy bursting with stunning vocal virtuosity.

1 March : Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844 - 1908) joined the Russian naval service at the age of 18. He did not receive a conservatory education and pursued his musical interests mainly through private study and self-learning. In his early twenties, he became one of the five young composers, nicknamed ‘The Mighty Handful’, under the leadership of Mily Balakirev, the other three being Modest Mussorgsky, Alexander Borodin and César Cui. This group advocated the development of a national Russian style in music. Among them, Rimsky-Korsakov was best known and most admired for his superior craftsmanship and brilliant orchestration.

In 1868, The Tsar’s Bride, a play by Lev Mey, was suggested to Rimsky-Korsakov by Balakirev as a suitable subject for an opera. Rimsky-Korsakov, however, was not able to follow up with this idea until many years later due to his heavy commitments as composer, orchestrator, editor, and especially because of his appointment, from the age of 27, as Professor of Composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Another factor was his marriage in 1872 that led to the fatherhood of six children. Eventually, the opera was written in 1898, performed for the first time in Moscow the following year, and moved on to the great Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg in 1901. The composer was then 57 years old.

The Tsar’s Bride is a melodrama full of intrigues motivated by jealousy arising from political rivalry and frustrated love. Marfa is the beautiful daughter of a wealthy family. She is in love with a young nobleman named Lykov. Gryaznoy, a member of the royal bodyguard who desires Marfa’s affection, plans to win her love with a magic potion. Lyubasha, Gryaznoy’s abandoned mistress, learns of his plan and secretly swaps the love potion with a deadly poison. On the day of the engagement of Marfa to Lykov, everyone is surprised to learn that the Tsar has chosen Marfa to be his own bride. In the meantime, the poison begins to take effect on Marfa. It causes her to lose her mind and die at the end of a moving mad scene.

In our complete recording, the role of Marfa is sung by soprano Ekaterina Kudriavchenko. Gryaznoy is portrayed by baritone Vladislav Verestnikov. Lyubasha is interpreted by mezzo-soprano Nina Terentieva; and Lykov by tenor Arkady Mishenkin. Each of these principal singers has at least one important aria to perform. The Tsar as a character does not appear in the opera. The Sveshnikov Russian Academic Choir and Moscow Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra provide brilliant support under conductor Andrey Chistiakov.

A production of this work by the Bolshoi Opera will be presented at the Hong Kong Arts Festival later this month.

8 March : Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus

For the second Sunday Opera programme of the month, Rupert Chan will present the ever-popular Viennese operetta, Die Fledermaus (The Bat) by Johann Strauss II (1825 - 1899). This light-hearted, sparkling and somewhat frivolous but extremely pleasing piece for the theatre was first performed in April 1874. It remains the most successful box-office hit of the so-called Golden Age of Operetta represented by the works of Johann Strauss the younger.

Already enjoying an enormous reputation as the King of the Viennese Waltz at a relatively young age, Johann Strauss was said to have been advised by Jacques Offenbach, who created the vogue for comic operettas in Paris, to turn his attention to the stage rather than concentrating solely on dance music, waltzes, and polkas. It was Strauss’ wife Jetty who took up the advice seriously and persistently drove her husband on to create a special brand of Viennese operettas. In Die Fledermaus, this potential was realised with immense success. Today, this work stands firm on the international repertoire for every season in every major opera house especially during the New Year and other festive occasions.

The whole plot is one great joke played for the amusement of a bored aristocrat, Prince Orlofsky. The joke itself is an act of revenge against the wealthy gentleman of leisure Eisenstein, who once left a friend in a public square drunk and dressed as a bat; hence the title of the operetta. From overture to finale, the score abounds in delightful moments, notably the mock farewell trio in Act I; the laughing song, czardas, friendship chorus and the famous Fledermaus waltz in Act II; and the hilarious slap-stick prison scene with the high-spirited champagne celebration at the very end.

The recording chosen for your enjoyment features tenor Nicolai Gedda as Eisenstein, soprano Anneliese Rothenberger as his wife Rosalinde, tenor Adolf Dallapozza as her admirer Alfred, soprano Renate Holm as her maid Adele, and mezzo-soprano Brigitte Fassbaender as Prince Orlofsky. The Vienna State Opera Chorus and Vienna Symphony Orchestra give a brilliant performance under the baton of Maestro Willi Boskovsky.

A production of Die Fledermaus staged by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts will be performed at the Academy Drama Theatre later this month.

15 March : Massenet’s Manon

Jules Massenet (1842 - 1912) was admitted to the Paris Conservatory of Music when he was 11 years old. He studied composition under the tutelage of Ambroise Thomas, one of the most distinguished French composers of the mid-19th century. On graduation at the age of 21, Massenet won the prestigious Grand Prix de Rome and went on to become the most prolific and successful opera composer in France, producing a total of 34 works for the theatre, many of which were extremely popular during his lifetime. Manon is his 14th opera. It was completed in 1883, during the composer’s tenure as professor of composition at the conservatoire.

Based on Abbé Prévost’s famous novel The Story of Chevalier des Grieux and Manon Lescaut, the opera was premiered at the Opéra-Comique of Paris in January 1884. By its centenary year, Manon had been given more than 2,500 performances in the French capital alone. It is without doubt Massenet’s most successful and musically near-perfect creation for the operatic stage.

Set to a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille, the plot centres around the fate of two young lovers who meet in Amiens and elope to Paris, where Manon succumbs to the temptation of luxurious living as mistress to a rich nobleman. Des Grieux attempts in vain to rescue her from her dissipated way of life, but Manon’s obsession with wealth causes her inevitable downfall. Finally arrested and sentenced to deportation to the new world, Manon dies on the road to Le Havre in the arms of her one true love, Des Grieux.

The fine recording to be presented has a fabulous cast led by Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu in the title role, displaying a rich voice of velvet quality. Partnering her in the role of Des Grieux is Corsican tenor Roberto Alagna who has a bright timbre and a passionate temperament. The Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels, are conducted by Antonio Pappano.

22 March : Haydn’s Orlando Paladino

In 1782, Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809) received an order from his employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, to compose a new work to celebrate the visit of the Grand Prince of Russia. Haydn produced this comic heroic drama, which has won critical acclaim as the composer’s funniest opera. It was very popular during his lifetime.

Set to an Italian libretto by Nunziano Porta, taking inspiration from episodes describing the adventures of Charlemagne’s Christian knight Roland in the famous epic romance, Orlando Furioso, by the important Renaissance poet Ludovico Ariosto, the opera tells the story of how Orlando, driven insane by his unrequited love for Angelica, the lovely princess of northern China, is rescued from mortal danger by the kind-hearted sorceress Alcina. The score reveals many instances of Haydn’s lively wit and subtle humour.

A recent recording will be presented for your enjoyment, with Nikolaus Harnoncourt directing the Concentus Musicus Wien and a cast led by tenor Michael Schade in the title role, soprano Patricia Petibon as Angelica and mezzo-soprano Elisabeth von Magnus as Alcina.

29 March : Donizetti’s La fille du régiment

On the last Sunday of this month, we shall all share the great fun and high-spirited comedy in the wonderful performance of the great Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti and the stupendous Australian coloratura soprano Dame Joan Sutherland in La fille du régiment (The Daughter of the Regiment) by Gaetano Donizetti (1797 - 1848). This is the composer’s first opera set to a French libretto, shortly after he left his native Italy to settle in Paris. The work was first performed by the Paris Opéra-Comique in February 1840. After its initial cold reception in the French capital, it soon became widely popular all over Europe. Following a series of revivals in the 1960s, this opera has in fact become one of the greatest box-office hits in the international repertoire today.

Marie, an orphan girl abandoned near a military camp up in the Alps, has been brought up by the French regiment stationed there and assigned duties as their canteen girl. She falls in love with Tonio, a Tyrolean boy who, in order to marry her, must first become a member of the regiment and then have the consent of all the soldiers in the troop, who are her collective fathers. Further complications arise when the Marquise of Birkenfeld arrives to claim Marie as her illegitimate niece and wants to transform her into a high-born lady qualified to be the bride of a duke. The entire regiment comes to her rescue and brings a joyful ending to the opera.

Our recording was made in 1967 as the result of a famous

production staged the year before by the Royal Opera

House at Covent Garden, London, featuring Dame

Joan Sutherland as Marie, Luciano Pavarotti as Tonio,

mezzo-soprano Monica Sinclair as the Marquise, and

baritone Spiro Malas as the sergeant of the regiment.

The Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House

perform under the baton of Richard Bonynge. This was

the opera that established the superstardom of Pavarotti

with his astounding delivery of nine glorious high-Cs at

the climax of a single aria.

Taking traditional music in the widest sense of the term including everything from folk music to ethnic music,

this show will bring such diverse styles as traditional polyphonic Malimba music from the Hadza bushmen

of Tanzania, classical Radif Persian repertoire with Iranian singer Parissa, southern Indian temple music with

the Chidambaram Periya Melam Temple Ensemble, traditional Tarling music from Cirebon Indonesia from

composer and self-taught musician Embie C. Noer, and much more.

In addition to sampling various songs from around the world, the show will also focus on musical themes

with a selection of different musicians to highlight the particular style or even regional events chosen. As

an example of such explorations, here are a few of the musical themes and events we can focus on in this

month’s shows:

Songs of the Earth

• The ‘Découvertes Tunisie 21’ Festival held annually at the El Jem

Amphitheatre in Tunisia features the best traditional and fusion

musicians and composers of the country. The Festival also includes

noted musicians from the international scene. Various formations

may highlight traditional instruments such as the bender, ney,

luth, oud and qanun on their own, and also in combination with

modern electronic keyboards and samplings to amplify the range

and create new sounds. Other performers will blend traditional

Tunisian songs with styles ranging from jazz to Gnawa music in an

exuberance of virtuosity.

• Romany or Gypsy music from East Europe. Based on the Balkan

fanfare instruments of violins, brass instruments, and accordions,

travelling Rom bands also make unique wooden spoon and mouth

percussion, and, depending on their location, even a milk churn.

Their highly skilled techniques have been perfected through

centuries of performances in Eastern European villages and courts

of the local nobility. And as a people, the Gypsies’ origins are the

subject of legends.

• Modern traditional compositions from Finland. The capital Helsinki

is home to many Finnish musicians inspired by both traditional

Finnish folk songs and traditional songs of the Sami people living

farther north in the Arctic Circle. They combine the traditional with

jazz, avant garde inspirations and varying instruments to come up

with surprising results. Performers can combine anything from

the saxophone and the accordion to voice as an instrument and

keyboard samplings.

• Contemporary traditional music from Madagascar. This large island

off the Eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean has a long and

complex history of peoples, cultures, and influences coming from

South-East Asia, South Asia, and East Africa. These make up its 18

different ethnic communities, each with their own language, culture

and traditional songs. Although Salegy

has emerged as the main musical style

of the whole ‘Red Island’, many other

styles abound. The instrumentation is

unique to the island and their ‘Bals-

poussières’, French for ‘dust dances’,

as well. Varying artists will perform

on the Valiha, a bamboo tubular

zither, or the Sodina, a bamboo flute

similar to the Arab Ney flute, as well

as variations of these.

Looking at other musical themes that

will feature on this month’s programmes,

on any given week you may hear

musicians highlighting a selection of

classic Egyptian songs from the 60s,

various vibrant music styles from Naples,

traditional French songs from different

regions around France, traditional music

styles from Madrid, and so on.

Alwyn and Vaughan WilliamsOnly after William Alwyn was sure of his technical abilities did he

start to tackle his first symphony in his mid-forties. His Symphony

No. 1, described by himself as ‘an optimistic challenge’, is

presented in this concert along with Vaughan Williams’ Overture

from The Wasps, ballet music for Job, and one of his best-loved

works The Lark Ascending. Sakari Oramo conducts the BBC

Symphony Orchestra, joined by violinist Janine Jansen.

World Orchestra for PeaceThe late Sir Georg Solti founded the World Orchestra for

Peace in 1995, believing in ‘the unique strength of music

as an ambassador for peace’. The ideal is shared by British

composer Roxanna Panufnik in her Three Paths to Peace,

which employs elements from Christianity, Judaism, and

Islam. The programme, conducted by Valery Gergiev, is

completed with Richard Strauss’ Symphonic Fantasy from Die

Frau ohne Schatten and Mahler’s Symphony No. 6.

已故指揮大師蘇提於1995年成立世界和平樂團,深信「音樂具備宣揚和平的獨特能力」。有此信念者不只一

人,英國作曲家羅姍娜‧巴奴芙力融合基督教、猶太教及伊斯蘭教的音樂元素,寫下《通往平安的三條路徑》。

同場節目亦可以欣賞到選自李察‧史特勞斯的歌劇《沒有影子的女人》中的交響幻想曲,以及馬勒的第六交響

曲。音樂會由葛濟夫擔任指揮。

I listen to all sorts of music, as long as they

are pleasant to the ears. One thing nice about

working for the radio, is that I have access to a

library that’s very full of resources and I can listen

to music at all times! Whether it be classical,

original sountracks, musicals, pure instrumental,

jazz, or new age, as long as it has a nice tune, it

will be my favourite.

When the Head of Radio 4 asked me to present

a jazz programme at drive time, I was over the

moon. I was glad that I had a chance to share

some of my best loved numbers with listeners, but

the world of jazz is just enormous. Where should

I begin? Therefore, based on my ‘pleasant to the

ears’ principle, I play all tuneful melodies by

known and unknown composers and performers.

7 April is the 100th anniversary of the birth of

jazz diva, Billie Holiday. I look forward to sharing

some of Lady Day’s all time hits with you, as sung

by her or by some special artists. Don’t miss Jazz

and more ... this evening of blues and R&B!

我當初喜歡爵士樂,是因為聽時不需用腦。

我選音樂的原則很簡單,只要「好聽、順耳」就行了,懶理作

曲和演奏的是國際名家或無名小子。只要是好聽的,我都喜愛。

在電台工作的好處,是可以整天播著音樂:古典、爵士、電影

原聲、音樂劇、新紀元、跨界都可以聽到不眠不休。唱片房的珍

藏聽悶了,還有網上的大世界可供選擇,只怕時間有限、唱片

太多!

還記得當天第四台節目總監問我有否聽爵士音樂,有沒有興趣在

黃昏時段播放此曲種時,我心裏先是興奮了一陣子,接著便擔心

起來。我平日只是隨手拿來唱片就聽,並沒有記下演奏家和樂曲

名稱,怎樣做節目呢?於是我再次埋頭於我那無數的唱片叢,本

著「好聽、順耳」的原則,為聽眾帶來更多熟悉與不熟悉之作。

4月7日是爵士天后比莉哈樂黛的百歲冥壽,在黃昏6時15分的

「不太古典」節目,我會為你帶來 Lady Day 熟悉與不熟悉的

作品!
