Abstract. Given a fusion category C and an indecomposable C-module category M, thefusion category C

∗M of C-module endofunctors of M is called the (Morita) dual fusion category

of C with respect to M. We describe tensor functors between two arbitrary duals C∗M and

D∗N in terms of data associated to C and D. We apply the results to G-equivariantizations

of fusion categories and group-theoretical fusion categories. We propose a categorication ofthe Rosenberg-Zelinsky sequence for fusion category.

1. Introduction

1. In this paper k will denote an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. By a fusioncategory we mean k-linear semisimple rigid tensor category with finitely many isomorphismclasses of simple objects and simple unit object 1. For further reading we direct the readerto [1, 8].

The set of isomorphism classes of invertible objects of a fusion category C forms a groupwith multiplication induced by the tensor product that we will denote by Inv(C). A fusioncategory is called pointed if all its simple objects are multiplicatively invertible. A pointedfusion category C is equivalent to VecωG, that is, the category of G-graded finite dimensionalvector spaces, where G = Inv(C) and the associativity constraint is given by a 3-cocycleω ∈ H3(G, k∗).

A very useful technique for the characterization of fusion categories is the categorical Moritaequivalence, see the survey [25]. Given a fusion category C and an indecomposable left C-module category M the fusion category C∗

M := EndC(M) is called the (Morita/categorical)dual of C respect to M. Important constructions in fusion category theory such as theDrinfeld’s center and G-equivariantization of fusion categories can be seen as special cases ofcategorical duality. Also, fundamental examples of fusion categories, as group-theoretical [8],[27] and weakly group-theoretical fusion categories [9], are defined using categorical duality.

The 2-category of pointed fusion categories has a very simple and concrete descriptionusing group cohomology and group homomorphism. However, even for the 2-category ofgroup-theoretical fusion categories (Morita duals of pointed fusion categories) the descriptionin group-theoretical terms is not known1.

2. The goal of this paper is to describe the functors between two arbitrary duals C∗M and

D∗N in terms of data associated to C and D and apply the results to group-theoretical fusion

categories and equivariantizations.To do so, first we introduce the category Funct whose objects are pairs (C,M), where C is a

fusion category and M is an indecomposable left C-module category, and arrows from (C,M)to (D,N ) are equivalence classes of monoidal functors from C∗

M to D∗N . The composition of

arrows is the equivalence class of the usual composition of monoidal functors.With the notation above, the description of functors between group-theoretical fusion cat-

egories is equivalent to describe the subcategory of Funct whose objects are the pairs (C,M),with C a pointed fusion category [27]. Using [24, Proposition 3.2] the description of tensorfunctor between equivariantization of fusion categories (see Section 7.5.1) is equivalent todescribe the subcategory of Funct whose objects are the pairs (C ⋊ G, C), where C ⋊ G is asemidirect product fusion category.

3. In order to describe Funct in terms of data associated to C and D, we introduce thecategory Cor (see Section 2 for the definitions of module category, bimodule category, tensorproduct of module categories, etc):

(1) An Object is a pair (C,M), where C is a fusion category and M is an indecomposableleft C-module category.

(2) An arrow from (C,M) to (D,N ) is an equivalence class of pairs (S, α), where S isa (C,D)-bimodule category and α : S ⊠D N → M is an equivalence of left C-modulecategories.

Our first main result is an explicit description of tensor functor between categorical duals interms of Cor.

Theorem 1.1. The category Funct is equivalent to the category Cor.

Remark 1.2. The categories Funct and Cor are truncations of bicategories. We expect that thecategory equivalence of Theorem 1.1 comes from a truncation of a biequivalence of bicategories.

4. Let C be a fusion category. The group of equivalence classes of invertible C-bimodulecategories is called the Brauer-Picard group and is denoted BrPic(C). The Brauer-Picardgroup of a fusion category is the fundamental group of a categorical 2-group denoted as BrPicthat parameterizes the extensions of a fusion category C by finite groups, see [10]. Then, aninteresting problem is to calculate explicitly the Brauer-Picard group of some concrete fusioncategories, some results of this type were obtained in [10], [16], [21], [26].

Our second main result is a pair of applications of Theorem 1.1 to the Brauer-Picard groupof a fusion category.

4.1 The first is a categorification of the Rosenberg-Zelinsky exact sequence. Let C be afusion category and consider the abelian group of (isomorphism classes of) invertible objectsInv(Z(C)) of the Drinfeld’s center Z(C) of C. For every C-module category M we have agroup homomorphism

In case that C admits a braided structure the sequence is just an inclusion Aut⊗(C) →BrPic(C), see Corollary 6.1.

4.2 Since Out⊗(C) is a subgroup of BrPic(C), thus BrPic(C) is a Out⊗(C)-biset with rightaction M · σ = Mσ and left action σ · M = σ∗M, where σ∗ is a quasi-inverse of σ, seeSubsection 6.2.

We define T (C) as the set of equivalence classes of right C-module categories M such thatC ∼= C∗

M as fusion categories. Note that the sets Out⊗(C) \ BrPic(C) and T (C) are rightBrPic(C)-sets in a natural way.

By [10, Proposition 4.2] we have a map

As an application of Theorem 1.4 we compute the Brauer-Picard group of some Tamabara-Yamagami and pointed fusion category with non-trivial associator.

Also we present an algorithmic procedure to reduce the calculation of the Brauer-Picardgroup to compute Out⊗(C) and some extra data that can be obtained using only a set ofrepresentative of T (C)/Out⊗(C), see Section 6.2.1.

5. In the remainder of the paper we focus in equivariantizations of fusion categories andgroup-theoretical fusion categories. We provide a description of the possible tensor equiva-lence between equivariantizations of fusion categories. We also describe invertible bimodulecategories and their tensor products over arbitrary pointed fusion categories. Our aim is toprovide all necessary ingredients for the application of Theorem 1.1 to any concrete exampleof group-theoretical fusion categories.

6. The paper is organized as follows: In Section 2 we discuss preliminaries about moduleand bimodule categories over fusion categories. In Section 3 we recall some important tensorequivalences related with some dual categories and the module structure induced by a tensorfunctor. In Section 4 we state and prove some lemmas in order to give a complete proof of themain result of this paper. In Section 5 we give a characterization of the tensor equivalencesbetween dual categories in terms of certain data and we also focus on the study of tensorfunctors between equivariantizations of fusion categories. In particular we give a description oftensor equivalences of Drinfeld’s centers of pointed fusion categories and we give an alternativeproof for the classification of isocategorical groups. In Section 6 we show the exactness of theRosenberg-Zelinsky sequence and we also give a proof of Theorem 1.4. In Section 7 we recallsome notions of the theory of G-sets and we study module categories over pointed modulecategories and their tensor products to describe tensor functors between group-theoreticalfusion categories. In Appendix 8 we give an explicit description of the 2-category of modulecategories over a pointed fusion category and some alternative proofs to some well knownresults of group-theoretical fusion categories.

2. Preliminaries

2.1. Modules categories and Morita equivalence. Let C be a fusion category over k.A module category over C is a semisimple category M together with a biexact functor ⊗ :C ×M → M satisfying natural associativity and unit axioms. See [28] for more details.

A module category M over C is called indecomposable if it is not equivalent to a nontrivialdirect sum of module categories.

Let M and N be left (respectively, right) module categories over C. We will denote byFunC(.M, .N ) (respectively, FunC(M.,N .)) the category whose objects are C-module func-tors from M to N and whose morphisms are natural module transformations between thesefunctors. If it is necessary we will use dots in order to specify if the category of functors iswith respect to a left or a right structure. In the particular case when M = N , we will usethe notation EndC(.M) := FunC(.M, .M). It follows from [8, Theorem 2.15] that EndC(M)is a fusion category when M is an indecomposable C

Let M be a left (respectively right) module category over C. The (Morita) dual categoryC∗M of C with respect to M is the tensor category EndC(.M) (respectively EndC(M.)).Two fusion categories C and D are Morita equivalent if there exists an indecomposable

C-module category M such that D ∼= (C∗M)op.

2.2. Bimodules categories. Let C,D be fusion categories. A (C,D)-bimodule category isboth, a left C-module category and a right D-module category and these two actions mustbe compatible. Equivalently, a (C,D)-bimodule category is a module category over C ⊠Drev,where Drev is the category D with reversed tensor product and ⊠ is the Deligne tensor productof abelian categories, see [5].

If M is a (C,D)-bimodule category then its opposite category Mop is a (D, C)-bimodulecategory with actions ⊙ given by X ⊙M =M ⊗X∗ and M ⊙X = X∗ ⊗M , X ∈ C,M ∈ M,see [10, subsection 2.9].

Let A be an abelian category and let M,N be left and right (strict) C-module categories,respectively. In [10] the tensor product M ⊠C N of C-bimodule categories M and N wasdefined. We recall some properties from [10] related to the tensor product of module categories.

Remark 2.1. Let M be a right C-module category, N a (C,D)-bimodule category, and Ka left D-module category. Then, by [18, Proposition 3.15], there is a canonical equivalence(M ⊠C N )⊠D K ∼= M ⊠C (N ⊠D K) of bimodule categories. Hence we can use the notationM ⊠C N ⊠D K without any ambiguity.

A (C,D)-bimodule category M is invertible if there exist bimodule equivalences

Mop⊠C M ∼= D and M⊠D Mop ∼= C.

The Brauer-Picard group BrPic(C) of a fusion category C is the set of equivalence classesof invertible C-bimodule categories with product by ⊠C [10].

3. Morita equivalence of fusion categories revised

Let S be a (C,D)-bimodule category and X be an object in C. The left multiplication byX gives rise to a right D-module endofunctor of S that we will denote L(X). Thus we havea tensor functor

Conversely, each tensor functor F : C → EndD(S.) defines a unique (C,D)-bimodule categorystructure on S. It was proved in [10, Proposition 4.2] that S is an invertible (C,D)-bimodulecategory if and only if the fuctor L is a tensor equivalence.

LetM be a left C-module category. We will consider M as a left EndC(M)-module categorywith action given by

Notice that FunEndC(M)(M,S) is indeed a right C-module category because the left actionsof C and EndC(M) commute, and the right action is given by

Therefore, its left adjoint L is also an equivalence of 2-categories and the unit η and thecounit ε of the adjunction are equivalences of module categories.

An important fact used in the proof of Theorem 3.1 is that the 2-functor R is an equivalenceof 2-categories [11]. Some useful results follow from it.

Remark 3.2. (1) Looking at the equivalence R for morphisms we get that for each S ∈Ml(EndC(M)) there is a canonical tensor equivalence

5. Tensor equivalences between equivariantizations of fusion categories

5.3.1. Isocategorical groups. Two finite groups G and H are called isocategorical if their cate-gories of representations are tensor equivalent [7]. We finish this section with a reformulationof the classification of isocategorical group, see [7], [3], [17].

Using Theorem 5.2 we can give an alternative proof to the classification of isocategoricalgroups. Let G be a finite group. Consider G acting trivially on Vec, then RepG = (Vec)G andG-equivariant Vec-module categories are the same as VecG-module categories (see Appendix).In this subsection we will follow the notation of the Appendix.

We apply Theorem 5.2 to the case that D = Vec. Let M be a VecG-module category.Since extensions of Vec are pointed fusion categories, the VecG-module category M must bepointed (see Subsection 8.2) with MG ∼= Vec, so MG must have rank one.

By [22, Theorem 3.4] (see also Proposition 8.5) the pointed module categories over VecG arein correspondence with pairs (A,ψ), where A is a normal abelian group and ψ ∈ H2(A,ψ) isAdG-invariant. Since M(X,µ)G = FunVecG(VecG,M(X,µ)), by [27, Proposition 3.1] (see alsoCorollaryM(X,µ)G) the simple object are in correspondence with ψ-projective representationof A. 7. Invertible bimodule categories over pointed fusion categories and theirtensor product

A group-theoretical fusion category is, by definition, a fusion category Morita equivalentto a pointed fusion category VecωG, see Appendix for more details. The following corollary ofTheorem 1.1 provides an implicit answer to Problem 10.1 in http://aimpl.org/fusioncat/10/.

The goal of this section is to describe explicitly bimodule categories over pointed fusioncategories and their tensor product in order to provide all ingredients for the reader interestedin apply Theorem 1.1 to concrete examples of group-theoretical fusion categories.

7.1. Goursat’s Lemma and bitransitive bisets. Recall that, given groups G1 and G2,a G1-G2-biset is a set X endowed with a left G1-action and a right G2-action such thath(xk) = (hx)k, for all h ∈ G1, k ∈ G2 and x ∈ X.

We can regard any G1-G2-biset X as a left G1 ×G2-set equipped with the action given by(h, k) · x = h · x · k−1, for all x ∈ X, h ∈ G1, k ∈ G2. Reciprocally, any G1 × G2-set can beregarded as a G1-G2-biset. It is easy to see that this rule defines an equivalence between thecategories of G1-G2-bisets and left G1 ×G2-sets.

8. Appendix: Module categories over pointed fusion categories

Recall that a fusion category is called group-theoretical if it is Morita equivalent to a pointedfusion category. See [27, 8] for details of the theory of group-theoretical fusion categories.In this appendix we give alternative descriptions to the characterization of indecomposablemodule categories over pointed fusion categories [28], group-theoretical fusion categories [8]and pointed module categories [22], using the theory of G-sets. This alternative descriptionit is useful, for example to describe some tensor products (see Section 7). We will follow thenotations of Subsection 7.2.

8.1. The 2-category of left module categories over VecωG. In this section we will providea explicit description of the 2-category Ml(Vec

ωG), where objects are left module categories

over VecωG, 1-cells are VecωG-module functors and 2-cells are VecωG-linear natural isomorphisms.
