VOLUME 47 ISSUE NUMBER 1 Summer 2013

Greetings:

The summer of 2013 is here and all of the Leadership and Staff of UAW Local 160 sincerely hope that every one of our members, both active and retired, and their families, has a safe, happy and prosperous summer season.

Election ResultsNow that the election season is over, I’d like to give strong congratulations to all the candidates who stepped up for this Local Union and put their names on the ballot. It takes a personal commitment and a sense of individual sacrifice to take on the responsibility of representing this membership. Anyone willing to step up to that task are winners in life already; UAW Local 160 owes you all a “Thank you

very much.” Good-byes versus Hellos

There is a “no fun” practice, which is becoming a tradition here at General Motors, since the first Special Attrition Package (SAP) and now it has increased to the Salary side since bankruptcy. That is for us to have to say good-bye to great people who we have developed successful strong working relationships with, either by retirement, career moves, or unfortunately, even death (showing our age) is all too common a practice here at the WTC.The only thing that makes up for all the good-byes is the opportunity to say hello to all the new faces that have joined this great UAW membership; they are the future. The Leadership of UAW Local 160 is on one accord; to continue to grow and increase the membership numbers on every level, and in every classification to continue to capture the Engineering, Design, Pre-Production Work from around the world, as well as Facilities Service Operations work here on our beautiful Warren Technical Center Campus Site.

The Vision is still clear and Our Future looks very Bright! As always, Solidarity forever, for it’s the Union that makes us Strong!

Grace and Peace.

I would like to thank all my Local 160 Brothers and Sisters for the great turnout at our recent election. It is exciting to see the membership concerned about the important issues that face us as a Union. I am honored that the members of District 2

have placed their trust in me to be their representative. As we move forward, I am confident that the Shop Committee is ready to work Unified on your behalf, seeking job security and upholding our reputation here at Local 160. Stay healthy and happy, and BUY AMERICAN!

In Solidarity,Shawn LovelaceDistrict 2 Committeeman

Brothers and Sisters, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your vote and support in the District #3 Committeeperson election. It is a privilege and honor to have been elected to represent this membership.

You’ve entrusted me with the responsibility of representing and serving the interests of this membership; I assure you I will conduct business with openness, honesty and integrity over the next three years. With this appointment, I’ve promised to be visible within the department and to continue to be available and approachable to hear all of your questions and concerns. I take this elected position seriously and have pledged to do whatever is in my power to uphold the best interests of each department and individual within this membership. I am grateful for your support and look forward to this opportunity in serving you.

Fraternally yours,Daaron FleegerDistrict #3 Committeeperson

I’d like to thank everyone for your support and giving me the opportunity to serve you, the Union. I’d also like to thank everyone who came out and voted, regardless of who you supported, because a good turn-out like we had sends a message

to management that this membership cares about the issues at hand. I will always be forthright and never forget who I represent: You on the floor!

Sincerely and with Solidarity,Steve WaltersDistrict 2 Alternate Committeeman

Dear Brothers and Sisters, I would like to thank you all for coming out to vote. Thank you for your support. I will continue to listen to your ideas and concerns. I welcome any input and suggestions. I will be making your

TECH ENGINEER PAGE 3 Summer 2013Greetings Brothers and Sisters,

Catching Up For a little over a year I have been Financial Secretary-Treasurer and it has been a year filled with new experiences and plenty of work. The learning process has been nonstop and with your support I will continue to look for opportunities to improve my service to our Union.

Financially, the Local is in good standing and this past April the International Auditing Department spent a week looking over our books and finances. I am pleased to say that our International Audit Report found everything in order and we passed successfully. There have been several maintenance projects going on around the Hall throughout the year. We have had roof repairs, storm drain replacement, the hall sound system reworked and many other small repairs. Eventually, we will need to start looking at repairs to our parking lot and painting of the building exterior.

Tech Engineer News This issue of the Tech Engineer is my first experience as editor of our Local paper. Currently, we are looking at ways to communicate with our membership in a cost effective and timely manner. This edition will be our Summer Edition and the next will be published in September / October, the Fall edition. That means we will publish quarterly on a trial basis to get important information out to our active and retired membership. Also, we will not be mailing to every member due to cost. This issue has been printed and mailed to our retirees. An electronic PDF document is emailed to members that are signed up for E-Tech and one is posted to the website. If you would like to be added to the E-Tech email list please email to: [email protected] with the subject as ADD E-TECH. There are a limited number of hard copies available at the Union Hall. Should you require a hard copy please stop by, pick one up and add your name to our mailing list.

Website and Facebook PageFor the past year we have mostly relied on the Local 160 Website and the UAW Local 160 Facebook page to keep the most up to date information available to our membership. You can find these pages at uawlocal160.org and/or use Facebook search to find UAW Local 160 (join the group to receive update notifications). There has been exceptionally positive feedback on the Website and Facebook and I find this the best method of quickly notifying our membership about Union updates and activities. Please email me at [email protected] with comments or suggestions on how to make these sites better. Improvements will continue on both pages as time allows.

UAW Local 160 Family Picnic Summer is about here and we will be busy planning for the Local 160 Family Picnic. I hope to see many of you at the K of C Park on August 11. The Shop Committee will have tickets or you can purchase them at the Hall. The success of the picnic is dependent on volunteer help. If you are interested in helping out, please contact me or Kelly at the hall and let us know. Your help is always needed and appreciated. Thanks and have a great summer,

Becky Ervin Financial Secretary [email protected]

Greetings Brothers and Sisters,Thank you to everyone

that participated in the 2013 Local 160 Triennial Election; I’m looking forward to serving our membership for another three years and getting to know and help educate our new members about this great union. Your enthusiasm, support, and participation are much appreciated.

Stay involved and take every opportunity to be educated about the history of this great union, and the struggles and sacrifices that were endured so that you can enjoy the benefits, programs and privileges that we have today.

FYI… as in the past, GM Unit, 3rd Party Unit and General Membership meetings have been suspended for the summer, per our bylaws. Meetings will resume in September. For updates, event information, etc., please visit us at uawlocal160.org or visit us on Facebook. Enjoy your summer, and remember that safety should be our overriding priority at home and at work. Be blessed and be a blessing.

In Solidarity,

Nicole “Nikki” PerkinsLocal 160/GM Unit Recording [email protected]

I thought that May was to be the last month that I was in office, but I was mistaken. It will be the first of July. I want to thank all of the membership for letting me represent you, but I feel it is time for me to retire again and have decided not to run for office

again. I was very happy to see that 100 members turned out

for the election. Only 38 turned out for the last election. Remember your vote counts and if we turn out, then they have to pay attention to our needs.

What Is Ergonomics? It is the field of study concerned with the design of environments, processes and products that are suitable for safe and effective worker use.

• Making sure job demands do not exceed human capabilities jointly agreed upon by the UAW and GM

• Acknowledging that there is a relationship between certain types of work (risk factors) and injury

• Attempting to eliminate risk factors to prevent and minimize injuries

What Ergonomics Can Do…?• Reduce Injury/Illness & Cost associated with them• Reduce Absenteeism• Increase Worker Comfort• Improve Quality and Productivity• Verify if an operation is within acceptable risk

factor limits• Identify improvements that make work less

physically demanding

Ergonomically Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (Commonly called CTD’s):Is damage to body tissue caused by outside forces? Over time, this damage interferes with a normal, healthy body.

• Cumulative: building up or increasing over a long period of time

• Trauma: the damage of body tissues by outside forces

• Disorder: a condition that interferes with normal health functioning of the body

Common Ergonomic Musculoskeletal Disorders:• Tendonitis • Tenosynovitis• Digital Neuritis • Epicondylitis • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome• Thoracic Outlet Syndrome• De Quervain’s Disease• Raynaud’s Phenomenon• Rotator Cuff Tendonitis• Low Back Pain

HOPE FOR TROUBLED FAMILIES

(FAMILIES ANONYMOUS)

Mental health and substance abuse issues are a real problem in today’s society. Drug addictions don’t just take their toll on the addict; these addictions can have a huge impact on the addict’s

inner circle of family and friends. Sometimes family members and loved ones become so consumed with the addicts welfare and destructive behaviors they neglect their own happiness and their life becomes consumed in trying to save or better the life of their addicted loved one. One of the hardest things in life is learning to let go and let others take responsibility for their own choices. “Families Anonymous” is a wonderful support group helping many family members do just that….having the support of others facing the same trials and tribulations, members learn to cope and find inner peace while dealing with what can seem like the loss of a loved one.

One of the biggest revelations that family members and loved ones gain through attending “Families Anonymous” is the discovery that addiction touches all walks of life, the pain cuts deep, and there is a fine line between support and enabling. What some could perceive as good intentions may actually be helping the addict perpetuate their dependence. By providing financial support, transportation and shelter you could actually be helping the addict obtain their fix. However, being strong and saying no to an addict is not easy, especially when the addict is someone you care deeply about. Here is a “Families Anonymous” member sharing their feelings on their own road to sanity…

“Fear to faith: Whenever I imagine that my children need the help that only I can give to save them from an unfortunate situation, I have to stop. I stop everything I am planning, and any action I’m about to propose, stop thinking of alternatives that might work, and stop trying to fix everything. I have to break away from the whirlpool that’s waiting to suck me down – the whirlpools of irrationality that immerses me so completely in another’s problems that I no longer exist for myself. I remind myself those past occasions, when I permitted my children to work out their own solutions, how well they did without my interference. Sometimes it is only fear that spurs me to action; fear that without my help they will be incapable of solving their problems,

fear that they will make things even worse, fear that they may ruin their lives, fear…that they no longer need me! When I allow fear and insecurity to dominate my thinking, I become an obstacle to my own growth and the growth of my children. My higher power really does guide others as well as me…”

Addicts need to understand there are consequences for their actions, once loved ones stop enabling, addicts are forced to face the repercussions of their poor decisions. Whether that means losing a job, being stripped of material possessions, going to jail, or destroying relationships with someone they love. Hitting rock bottom may be the only means by which an addict is compelled to wake up and change their ways, and even then there are no guarantees.

The biggest benefit through Families Anonymous is the realization that you are not alone. In a confidential setting, families and loved ones supporting each other in similar circumstances can find strength and hope, while gaining back their own sanity and sense of peace. It is a support network where those struggling with a loved one’s addiction can openly discuss their anxiety, apprehension, bitterness and frustration.

Another benefit is realizing that although you can’t control another person’s behavior, you can control how you react to it. You must take care of yourself first, before you can offer support to anyone else. It’s learning the 3 c’s when thinking of our loved ones & related feelings of guilt, shame, and pain.

I did not Cause it…..

I cannot Control it….

I cannot Cure it…..

TECH ENGINEER PAGE 10 Summer 2013Hello 160,

This year’s V-CAP incentives are being posted in the work areas. You can also find them at the Local and on the 160 Facebook page. There are some new choices like a Skilled Trades and Veterans packages and also a Woman’s and Sportsman’s packages. There has never

been a more important time than now to give to the CAP program. Organized labor and working families are under attack like never before here in Michigan and across the nation. Billionaires like the Koch brothers and business are funding groups like ALEC that are looking to strip workers’ rights and roll back regulations that keep us safe in the workplace. The “Right to Work for Less” was forced through a lame duck session in December and now we have to do what we can to repeal this misleading anti-worker

law. The only way to do that is by getting Rick Snyder out of the governor’s office and electing more senators and state representatives that care about middle class working families. The way we fund worker friendly candidates is only through V-CAP and eventhough you might be a contributor already, if you’re not checked off, that money will not stay in Michigan where it is so crucially needed. To get signed up or checked off, you can do so at the Local or with a member of the V-CAP committee.

TECH ENGINEER PAGE 11 Summer 2013Hope for Heroes and their

Families

November 20, 2012

By: Laura King Veterans Day has since passed and we have all given thanks to our heroic military forces both active and veteran. This article is about helping and will come out as

we are preparing holiday feasts and family get-togethers. However, helping is not just for the holidays. Make it a part of your life. We need to provide moral, financial and emergency support to the troops and to their families while serving and when returning home. There are many organizations that raise awareness and funds for our brave men and women.

Many of us have been philanthropic and have given support to our troops here at home and overseas. However, we see more and more of our men and women come home each day, hopefully returning in the same manner in which they left, hearty, healthy and happy. Some do …others are not so lucky.

Some come home and adapt a bit smoother to everyday life. Others return and have an extremely difficult time getting back into the rhythm of daily living, there are a myriad of reasons with to many facets to delve into in this short article. But one thing is very much our duty to those who gave their life and of their lives to ensure that we get to keep ours and our freedom. We MUST return the favor to the active, the veterans and to their families.

Many forget the families that are behind each and every one of our troops. The families that are left behind to see off their loved ones, while some of us sit in comforting thanks that we do not have to. It is so heart breaking for a young child to see their mother or father leave for over a year or more to keep us safe, and in reciprocity for that parent to miss the growing their child will do in their absence. They miss that growing forever; there is not a rewind button for things like this, I wish there were. The families may be the quietly forgotten, but the families are also warriors. For everyone this massive military occupation has been underway for over 10 years.

We as a union are a membership of individuals. Many of us have more than one family member working for General Motors here at UAW Local 160. Many of you understand the harsh reality of war; there are veterans of war among us. They may be standing right next to you. Think…have you ever looked over and just said…”thank you.” Helping a soldier’s family, helps ease their burden. Anytime a family member is away it is emotionally draining. Resilience is needed more than you think; soldiers have to do many things to reinvent

themselves once they are home. They must face their fears, find meaning in struggle, and deal with tough situations which call for many differing responses. They need social support as well as moral support and solace when necessary. Optimism is essential and the need for positive role models, as well as cognitive strength and faith, is ever present. However, knowing you have someone you can count on for social support is the most important thing we can supply.

Once home, soldiers must re-enter the job market. They must be able to apply their strengths to the jobs they desire. They must make necessary life decisions for the future, and focus on pertinent issues. Let our soldiers and their families know that they have many alternatives and keep providing programs for rehabilitating in place.

Think what you are really thankful for, and then look for something that touches your heart and try doing something and/or donating to programs that may help our heroic military personal and the families who gave so much.

Here are some programs that offer assistance to our troops and their families:

Operation Proper Exit.org (excellent ‘60 Minutes’ Segment)

Operation Homefront, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency, financial, morale and other support to troops and their families while they serve and when they return home.

Homefront Heroes food, supplies, general supplies for military and military familiesOperation Kid ComfortOperation GratitudeVeteran’s Crisis Line. net / 1(800) 273-8255

Horses for Heroes, Veterans helping Veterans, Prog. Director Jessica Moore (248)628-7433

Camp Desert Kids

Offer to help a family in your own community. When a military spouse is deployed the burden is twice as much for the ones left behind. Offer to do something like mow the lawn, clean up the yard, or make dinner.

FIND A PROGRAM THAT YOU FEEL YOU CAN DO AND DO IT!
