From Mayor Larry Klein’s FB page: “It was fantastic to attend the first annual LGBTQ Pride Event on Murphy Avenue last Thursday night. There were a few speeches and some background music, but most importantly it was a chance for people to meet together outdoors for the first time in a long time and celebrate Pride. Thanks to all of the partners that worked together to make this event possible: the City of Sunnyvale, Sunnyvale Downtown Association, Sunnyvale Chamber, Santa Clara County Office of LGBTQ Affairs, Fabulous Sunnyvale and Silicon Valley Pride, and Sunnyvale Art Club members. Thanks to the Sunnyvale Art Club for putting together the Pride Art, which you can currently see at the Sunnyvale Public Library.”

THE BIG DRAW ORGANIZER RULES & PARTICIPATION Compiled and written by Ish Ramanathan

Contact Sac Members: Angela Hsu, Mary Williamson, Ishwarryah(Ish) Ramanathan , and Angelo Lopez for questions or if you would like additional information. Their emails are located in the body of the email sending this newsletter. Who is The Big Draw? The Big Draw is a pioneering visual literacy charity dedicated to raising the profile of drawing as a tool for wellbeing, thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement. The charity leads a diverse program of advocacy, empowerment, and engagement, and is the founder and driving force behind The Big Draw Festival – the world’s biggest celebration of drawing. The Big Draw manages collaborative research projects, campaigns and educational conferences on visual literacy, digital technology, and STEM. The Big Draw charity also supports professional and emerging artists through its national contemporary art prize, The John Ruskin Prize and exhibition, and through events, awards, and competitions, creates platforms for each and everyone who wants to draw. What is The Big Draw Festival? In 2021 The Big Draw Festival #MakeTheChange is a timely development on last year's exploration into the relationship between people and our living environments. In 2021, we want to take action, to explore and discover ways to live in balance with the world around us, to reconnect with each other and demand a better world for future generations. This is a great year to bring your community together through positive activism and creativity, and be part of The World's Biggest community of drawing enthusiasts! What We Understood S..AC signs up for The Big Draw as an Organization which helps us to create multiple projects. Each project is under the responsibility of an organizer. SAC signs up for The Big Draw as an Organization which helps us to create multiple projects. Each project is under the responsibility of an organizer.

The Big Draw provides a big platform and modes by which we can not only market each and every Artist but also SAC as an organization. We can create events/projects with well-edited pictures, videos and of course Art Piece(s). The Big Draw even provides some fancy outlines and market strategy traits by mail which will be made available to everyone(once we make sense out of the materials they provide). The Big Draw festival’s theme is “Make the Change”. It is important we come up with the proper title that adheres to the theme. They also encourage us to “make the change” in the community or propagate the idea into the community by involving members of family and community.

This is a charity event, by getting involved you are donating to the charity. You can run your own mini-charity in your community that might help you supply your project.

You can create workshops and encourage your community share into the charity project by using their own supplies.

Things To Hash Out Before An Organizer Creates A Project Have the organizer to lead the project Have an idea Have a title for the idea (on the theme: “Make the Change”) Have at least 1-2 team members(community or fellow SAC

members) to handle editing photos and videos Set a deadline to upload all your pictures and videos of the

project on The Big Draw’s website. How SAC And Board Members Plan To Help You - Treasury signs up for The Big Draw registration once there is

one project plan checklist completed by the lead organizer. We collect the marketing materials, try to make sense of it and share it with every organizer

- We can help you run a charity drive to collect supplies for your project through the community

- With every update(pics and videos) you provide we will be reflecting them through our FB and possibly other social networks.

- We can be a part of your team or community based on individual availability

Important Things To Do To sign up for The Big Draw please announce a project at the earliest that satisfies all the 5 points discussed above. We don't want any delay in signing up that might lose us a spot. Any of us can be a project organizer. All you need is an idea. Do

This is a great way to show your art and give a little info about yourself without all the pain of spending a lot of cas and managing a website.

One of the perks of membership includes your personal member artist page on our website! You can use it to market yourself and your art.

You can link to your personal gallery where your followers and potential clients can read about you, your artistic process, mediums, etc. and view your work!

Update your artwork often! Change series, or genre and add new work!

Here’s How: Your bio and thumbnails of your chosen work will also appear in the SAC Biography Notebook, which is on display for review at our art shows so that visitors and potential buyers can read more about you, the artist and see thumbnails of your current work. It’s an excellent intro to connect with you, as an artist and perhaps lead to sales or other opportunities.

So….if you need help writing your artist biography or artist statement, there are some excellent tutorials and examples to give you an idea of what yours should include which can be found online. Or, read some sample bios online and get some ideas for your own!

How To Upload Your Artwork and Artist Bio/Artist Statement to Sunnyvale Art Club’s Website https://www.sunnyvaleartclub.org/

1) Choose up to 10 (ten) current pieces. 2) Photograph your art in good light, not at an angle, a straightened, clear photo,

without glass reflection. If it’s in a frame, you’ll need to remove it to capture a clear, clean photo. No, frame/mat or staging, just the artwork:

3) Save the photos as jpg with highest quality, so it will help with compression, too when the webmaster, uploads it onto the website.

4) Keep the file's widest/longest length to be no more than 800 pixels. (That means if you have a 20"x16" or 16"x20", the 20" side should be no more than 800 pixels, total.)

5) Put it on your calendar to update your art on the website at least every year. 6) Email your artwork to the Webmaster, Sangeetha. You will find her email address in

the email that accompanied this newsletter. 7) In the subject line, it should say, "SAC Website Member Gallery" This helps to send

the email to the correct file for easy access and doesn't get lost in the zillions of daily emails.

Also, remember to include your full name so Sangeetha can put your name on your gallery page. Please be patient. It might take a few days or a week depending on Sangeetha’s schedule. If you need help, please don't hesitate to email Sangeetha, our Webmaster. That’s it! Be sure to update your artwork and your bio often! (Like every 6-8 months, that’s months, not years!)

Interesting Art Stuff

So, you want to do some art, but not sure what. Try this online quiz! Answer a series of multiple choice questions and find an idea for making art on the fly! Questions range from what color pallet you want to use, medium, where you like to make art, or how your mood is right now. It’s just for fun, so don’t make your art-career based on the final decision. (BTW, I got doodling. I guess that’s about my speed. LOL) https://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=1dq-what-should-i-draw_2RX

Interesting Techniques

RAISED STENCILING This technique creates a relief design using a stencil to create texture adding a contemporary element to your work. It’s especially useful in abstract, mixed media, or collage. You can use clear paste/gel mediums for texture only or mix with color. You can also paint gels and mediums after they dry. In this demonstration we will use a Very thick acrylic gloss gel like the one at right. This was $12.99 on Amazon, shop around. You may want to try a sampler of different mediums and gels. They can be found online at Jerry’s, Golden or Liquitex’s websites, etc. Materials: Sturdy painting support like chipboard, masonite, etc.,. / purchased stencil or one you’ve made, etc. / Thick acrylic paste/gel / Palette knife (stepped handle works best) or sturdy plastic playing or credit card, etc /damp rags. 1. Attach the stencil with painter’s tape to your art surface. Using the bottom, flat side of knife, apply medium to thickness desired. Be aware that acrylic mediums shrink up to 30%, so be generous and spread thicker than you want. There’s a learning curve so practice on something other than your masterpiece, first. 2. Smooth out the paste so that thickness is consistent. (or leave it thick/thin for desired variance of texture.) You can also use an old credit card, etc. 3. While still wet: carefully remove the stencil by rolling it back on one end until it’s completely detached. See photo >. 4. Scrape excess medium off the surrounding surfaces and/or carefully removing it from areas you don’t want the medium. 5. Once the paste/gel has dried, you can paint the design with washes, glazes, or paint. Be creative! Try it!

Interesting Art Stuff

For decades, Sunnyvale has been supporting the arts and the benefits art provides the community. Since the 1980’s, Sunnyvale has required a public art component for private development projects. We were one of the first cities in the San Francisco Bay Area to do so. We have one of the largest public art collections in Northern California with over 150 artworks in the collection. Sunnyvale’s vision: “Where all residents experience public art as part of their daily lives, celebrating the City’s history, people and culture through connected neighborhoods and interesting and accessible gathering places.” There’s a lot of public art in Sunnyvale. (and there’s a map to prove it!) You can find it here: https://www.publicartarchive.org/sunnyvale-public-art/ Click on each location to see the art. There are maybe 140 pieces of public art in the City of Sunnyvale, and you can visit every single piece. You may have seen them as you drive by or while waiting at a light, etc. This page shows many of the 140 pieces and gives the artist information as well as location and some have a story about the art, itself. https://www.publicartarchive.org/results/#/results?type=collection&term=Sunnyvale%20Public%20Art

C - Unity Review the Elements of Composition The elements of composition in art are used to arrange or organize the visual components in a way that is pleasing to the artist and, one hopes, the viewer. They help give structure to the layout of the painting and the way the subject is presented. They can also encourage or lead the viewer's eye to wander around the whole painting, taking in everything and ultimately coming back to rest on the focal point. In Western art the elements of composition are generally considered to be: Unity: Do all the parts of the composition feel as if they belong together, or does something feel stuck on, awkwardly out of place? Balance: Balance is the sense that the painting "feels right" and not heavier on one side. Having a symmetrical arrangement adds a sense of calm, whereas an asymmetrical arrangement creates a more dynamic feeling. A painting that is not balanced creates a sense of unease. Movement: There are many ways to give a sense of movement in a painting, such as the arrangement of objects, the position of figures, the flow of a river. You can use leading lines (a photography term applicable to painting) to direct the viewer's eye into and around the painting. Leading lines can be actual lines, such as the lines of a fence or railroad, or they can be implied lines, such as a row of trees or curve of stones or circles. Rhythm: In much the same way music does, a piece of art can have a rhythm or underlying beat that leads your eye to view the artwork at a certain pace. Look for the large underlying shapes (squares, triangles, etc.) and repeated color. Focus (or Emphasis): The viewer's eye ultimately wants to rest on the "most important" thing or focal point in the painting, otherwise the eye feels lost, wandering around in space. Contrast: Paintings with high contrast—strong differences between light and dark, for example—have a different feel than paintings with minimal contrast in light and dark, such as in Whistler Nocturne series. In addition to light and dark, contrast can be differences in shape, color, size, texture, type of line, etc. Pattern: A regular repetition of lines, shapes, colors, or values in a composition. Proportion: How things fit together and relate to each other in terms of size and scale; whether big or small, nearby, or distant. Uh, Oh, here’s the ‘Except for” Clause: The elements of composition are not the same as the elements of art, though composition is sometimes included as one of the latter.
