6 THOMPSON RIVERS UNIVERSITY

COAT OF ARMSGranted by Robert Douglas Watt, Chief Herald of Canada, on April 1, 2005, and entered in Volume IV, page 451 of the Public Register of Arms, Flags and Badges of Canada.

Arms: The blue field refers to the brilliant skies, lakes and rivers that envelop the region where Thompson Rivers University is located. The wavy circle around the sun stands for the sacred circle of life and the never-ending character of learning. It also recalls that TRU is located near the junction of several vital water sources. The sun symbolizes light and learning, a principal endeavour behind academic institutions.

Crest: The coronet honours the Indigenous peoples of the region by acknowledging the importance of

fish as food and for recreation in their communities and the community at large. The black bear represents strength, power and determination, important qualities for TRU’s success. The mythical winged bear is a reference to migratory birds, suggesting perpetual striving for excellence across all faculties and programs.

Motto: T7ETSXEMÍNTE RE STSELXMÉM means “to strive ahead” in Secwepemctsín. It is TRU’s motto, indicating the journey of learning is enduring and unremitting.

Supporters: The mare and stallion symbolize grace, power and endurance, characterizing TRU’s approach to learning and growth. They also refer to the role of horses in

farming and ranching in the region—past and present. Their sage collars reflect the distinct landscape. The collar medallions feature open books and echo the motif of the active pursuit of knowledge. The mare and stallion stand on the natural environment surrounding the university.

Original concept: Robert D. Watt, Chief Herald of Canada, assisted by the Heralds of Canadian Heraldic Authority.

Painter: Linda Nicholson

Calligrapher: Shirley Mangione

THE FLAG OF TRUThe sun that appears on TRU’s flag is taken from the centre of the coat of arms. The blue field refers to the brilliant skies, lakes and rivers in the region. The sun is a symbol of light and learning. It is surrounded by a wavy circle that represents the sacred circle of life, often a symbol in Indigenous beliefs. The wavy feature of the circle also recalls that the university is located near a junction of several water sources important to all who live in the region.

2019 SPRING CONVOCATION 7

CEREMONIAL MACEThe ceremonial mace was used historically to symbolize rank and protect people of authority. Today, it is a symbol of the university itself. It is carried by the registrar, who leads the academic procession and recession. The mace was conceptualized and carved by Kamloops-born Daniel Tom, a member of Tsal’alh (Seton Lake Indian Band), which is part of the Interior Salish St’át’imc Nation.

MeaningThe mace symbolizes Kamloops, a traditional meeting place of First Nations people. To represent TRU as a location for sharing cultural and academic pursuits, Tom incorporated two pieces of spruce from the area; one formed the mace, the other is the base attached to BC soapstone in the shape of spawning salmon. The three pieces  embody the

abstract shape of a wolf. Symbolic of TRU and local First Nations, the wolf is associated with communication and a teacher of new ideas.

The copper mace head represents the sun and moon and is adorned with four animals associated with seasons, directions, colours and life experiences on the medicine wheel. On the north is a translucent alabaster white buffalo representing family, the spiritual state and cold winter winds. A green jade field mouse sits to the south, for warm summer winds, the physical state and the future. On the east is an 18-karat-gold eagle representing cool autumn winds, the emotional state and the present. A chlorite black bear sits to the west to mark spring, the mental state and the past. Other animal motifs carved into the mace are a great blue heron, frog, coyote, bald eagle, grizzly bear and fish.

8 THOMPSON RIVERS UNIVERSITY

TRADITIONAL SECWÉPEMC TERRITORY TRU’s Kamloops and Williams Lake campuses are situated on traditional and unceded Secwépemc territory. There are approximately 7,000 Secwépemc people in the territory, which spans 180,000 square kilometres through the Interior plateau of south central British Columbia. The boundaries are marked by mountain ranges, grasslands and river valleys around the Fraser, and North and South Thompson rivers.

TRU has one of the largest Indigenous student populations among BC post-secondary institutions, with more than 2,000 students (about 10 percent), representing 16 First Nation and Indigenous peoples.

CoyoteThe coyote sculpture created by artist John McEwen watches over campus from the top of the Brown Family House of Learning. Symbolizing the university’s commitment to realizing potential, the sculpture faces toward the rising sun. It is made from bent and rolled weathered steel stars and suggests an energy or imagination of the earth and the sky.

2019 SPRING CONVOCATION 9

Territorial markerThe deep relationship between the Secwépemc people and the traditional lands on which TRU resides is commemorated on campus with an Indigenous territorial marker. Created by Secwépemc artists Rod and Ron Tomma and Mike Peters, the glossy stone territorial marker was installed in the northern entrance to Old Main.

Territorial markers hold great meaning for the Secwépemc people. They are significant land forms and rocks that can represent places of mythological happenings or designated boundaries. They often include mythological beings or animals of traditional significance, such as the coyote. TRU’s territorial marker is made from a rare form of quartz and is adorned with pictographs.

2019 SPRING CONVOCATION 11

Convocation ceremonies begin with an academic procession of official representatives, faculty and students dressed in academic regalia. This colourful event represents the rich cultural and historical traditions of universities.

Academic RegaliaDistinctive academic costume has been worn in universities since their inception some 1,000 years ago. Until relatively recently, the basic items—gown, hood and mortarboard—were worn as a part of the everyday life of university. Now largely symbolic, the costume indicates through its colours, trim and lining, the degree and the university giving the award. Blue and sage, TRU’s official colours, are featured on many of the academic costumes.

2019 SPRING CONVOCATION 27

VALEDICTORIANWEDNESDAY JUNE 5 | 2:30 PM

Vimaljeet Singh has enjoyed making a new family in Kamloops and at TRU. He is unlocking his potential through his post-baccalaureate diploma in International Business. He volunteered with the TRUSU Services Committee to promote its services to students, with TRU World’s IDays events and student orientation, and as a student mentor. He collected enough hours to qualify for the Tim Hortons Scholarship Program and won first prize for the fastest line-following robot in a short-term coding workshop. After getting a couple of years of work experience, he aspires to take a Master of Data Science program where his math, stats and programming skills will help him excel in this specialized field.

Makenzie Vandertoolen has always been about helping people, so it was a natural fit for her to go into nursing. And when it came to choosing a place to study, she kept hearing about TRU as having one of the best nursing programs around. Vandertoolen excelled in the program, attending numerous conferences, being on the dean’s Student Liaison Committee and holding the position of vice-president of the TRU Nursing Undergraduate Society for three years. That latter society developed a self-sustaining award for an exceptional nursing student. Vandertoolen has already been snapped up by Penticton Regional Hospital, where she works on a cardiac ward and plans to train for critical-care nursing.

Devon Banks did her homework before choosing a university and program. The Alberta student knew several people who highly recommended TRU and she discovered the communications program fit with her passion for music and events. Banks made her mark assisting with creating weekly events at the Commodore Grand Lounge and Café that united artists and students through music nights as well as being a teaching assistant in her final year. She was awarded the TRU Arts Merit Award in the winter of 2018 and twice won the Jennie Zwarich Memorial Bursary. After graduation, she looks forward to travelling to Vietnam to teach English while building up her freelance portfolio as a social media content specialist.

46 THOMPSON RIVERS UNIVERSITY

FOUNDATIONThis is a life-changing day.Your life at university, with its books, assignments, exams and hours of study, is done.

Your life after university, with its resumés, careers and a wide-open future, is about to begin. There’s so much uncertainty and potential waiting for you.

Today, the TRU Foundation Board, staff and volunteers celebrate with you, wishing you success and happiness, however you define them.

We hope you benefit from your education at TRU for the rest of your life. And we hope you find ways to make the world a better place, as cliché as that sounds. We can all do something to help others. As you step into the future, we hope you remember those who played a role in your education.

The TRU Foundation was created to help others—specifically, students. This non-profit society raises money for financial support and scholarships for more than 1,000 students every year. Almost 3,000 TRU graduates, just like you, have given $3 million to other students over the years.

You can help someone get an education at TRU. As a new graduate, you might not have much money to give. But it isn’t about the amount. It’s about all levels of support that help others realize a bright future. Those who can’t give money often give their time. Volunteers are also important and highly valued by the foundation.

Your future is bright. We ask that you think about leaving a legacy to light the way for others.

Make a tax-deductible donation or sign up to volunteer by getting in touch.

Congratulations on your academic achievement at TRU. You’ve worked hard and made the grade. You should be proud of what you’ve accomplished while you look forward to what comes next.

Whatever the future brings, please do not think that this is the end of your connection with TRU. The university has prepared you for another phase in your life, but that does not mean you need to leave your time and experiences at TRU behind.

You can be a part of the TRU alumni community that has been building since 1970. It has more than 57,000 members—family, really—who are spread throughout 87 countries. Stay connected with TRU and your classmates through the Alumni and Friends Association in many ways: regional events and socials, benefits and services, awards, stories, newsletters and Bridges magazine. And, of course, there is a website that puts it all in one place: tru.ca/alumni.

with TRU turning 50 in 2020, there’s even more reason to sign up and stay in touch.

The association wants to know about the places you go and the things you do. TRU is proud of its graduates, and the Alumni and Friends Association wants to help everyone who has been influenced by the university to remain in touch.

So as you go forward and lead your life after university, remember that you are still a part of TRU and a community that wants to continue to celebrate your achievements.

Again, congratulations on reaching this remarkable day and best wishes for all that you do. You are alumni for life.
