LAST Saturday night, the membersof Rotary West of Barbados tookthe time to honour four personswho would have helped the clubachieve their causes over the pastyear.

Carlton Bourne and Cynthia O’Harareceived the Vocational Service awardand Joseph Ward and Dr. Paul Steinbokreceived the Paul Harris Fellow Award.

Speaking during the awards ceremony that took place at MahoganyRidge Saturday night, President of

Rotary West of Barbados Morton Holderexpressed that they were using thattime to honour those who would haveexhibited exceptional quality and standards.

It was explained that, usually, theVocational Services award was thehardest and most challenging award aspersons did not always understand thephrase Vocational Service. In additionto giving out two Vocational ServiceAwards, Holder noted that they wouldalso be handing out two Paul HarrisFellows Awards and explained that thisaward is known to be the highest

standard in Rotary.“For those who don’t know, those

persons who are being honoured forVocational awards, are those who wouldhave exhibited high quality and standards throughout their entire vocation, the same for Paul Harris fellows, some would say that PaulHarris would be the highest standard inRotary. So, we are honouring those whowould have assisted us and helped uswith our overall work throughout theyear,” he said.

He explained that as Rotarians, theywere expected to go beyond the call of

duty and help others, as such, it was important to recognise those who helpthem achieve these acts of servicethrough either volunteering their timeor monetary contributions, which is whyhe believed it was important to awardthese four individuals.

The awards ceremony on Saturdaywas also extra special as it lined up directly with the District Governor ofRotary, Dominique Venere’s, visit toBarbados. She revealed that she wastaking a trip across the Caribbean andintended to visit all of the Rotary Clubsin Barbados during her stay.

SOME Public Service Vehicle (PSV)operators are hopeful that a resolu-tion will be found and they will beable to function as normal forthe start of the new school termtoday.

Yesterday, The Barbados Advocatevisited the Constitution River Terminalin Bridgetown and chatted with some ofthe PSV operators. Most of themseemed optimistic that they will be ableto work on the roads when the schoolchildren return to school. However, midday media reports indicated that ameeting scheduled for the same day at9 am with the Public Service VehicleWorkers’ Association and Transport authorities did not materialise.Over the last couple of days, these workers having been making headlineswith their grievances on proposed plans for their current dress code.

When The Barbados Advocate spoketo one of the PSV operators a little after10.30 am, he said that a meeting wasscheduled at National Union of PublicWorkers (NUPW). After calling the Union at its Dalkeith RoadHeadquarters, The Barbados Advocatewas informed the start time for theevent was 1 pm.

At the beginning of 2019, PSV operators met with TransportAuthorities at the NUPW to expresstheir issues with the proposed uniformpolicy after their six hour strike whichresulted in shutdown of transit service.

Transport Board: Slightly better positionWith thousands of school children expected to be on the road today, thereis the question as to whether there are enough buses to supply the demand.

The Barbados Advocate contacted theActing General Manager of theBarbados Transport Board, Felicia Suewho said they are in a slightly better position and added that the public canexpect more than 60 buses on the road.

Tuesday January 8, 2019 • 3The Barbados Advocate

AS classes resume today for students atall public primary and secondary schoolson the island as the Hilary Term (TermII) gets underway, there are fears thatthere will not be enough Transport Boardbuses to carry students to school, and another potential strike by Public ServiceVehicle (PSV) operators which looms, could exacerbate the problem.

Reports are that a planned meetingbetween the Public Service VehicleOperators Association, the newest bodyin the transport sector and the TransportAuthority, scheduled for yesterday morning, did not come off and membersof the Association were said to have beenplanning their next steps, even as theymet at the National Union of PublicWorkers (NUPW). The Association’sheads were said to have been waitinguntil the close of day, to see the outcomefor the proposed talks, before they announced their next move.

Meanwhile,Chairman of the TransportBoard, Gregory Nicholls has been quotedin the press as stating that the Board isgrappling with a less than adequatenumber of buses. As such, the generalpublic is hoping that the impasse between the PSV operators and theMinistry of Transport and Works isironed out soon.

Just last week, the operators of thePSVs went on strike, protesting a number of issues they indicated need tobe addressed, by the relevant authori-

ties. They have signalled that strike action could intensify, even as the new school term opens, if there is no resolve.

Just ahead of the opening of the newschool year last year, Minister ofTransport, Works and Maintenance,Dr.William Duguid along with TransportBoard Chairman, Gregory Nichollspointed out then that efforts were on toensure that there were an adequatenumber of Transport Board buses on theroad, to transport the travelling publicand school children.

“We have our bus availability up to 92 now, which is unprecedented over thelast few years… and we are trying to getit up to 105. I have it under good authority, backed by the chairman andthe quality assurance team, that we canget that up to 105 in time to get ready forthe schools,” Minister Duguid said backthen.

Transport Board Chairman GregoryNicholls meanwhile, acknowledged thatbuses were being rotated in a systemthat pulls them off the road for repairs, whilst putting others into circulation, and this has helped to increase bus availability.

He however acknowledged that 180 buses in all were needed for more effective transport, but he said it wouldtake a little while, with the limited resources that the Transport Board had,to reach that number.

DIALOGUE from Page 1

“All we are after, is to have a conversa-tion as it relates to the issues that are fac-ing us and coming up with solutions thatare beneficial to everyone in the industry, and trying to achieve the same thingeveryone is trying to achieve – which isa better public transport system. That isall we are trying to achieve here,”he said.

Wharton added that while they wereextremely disappointed that the meetingwas not held, they have not lost hopethat such dialogue can be had. His comments came as he indicated that inthe event that they are unsuccessful ingetting a meeting, they would speak with their members and be guided accordingly.

Meanwhile, McDowall, who said hewas not acting in his official capacity asPresident of the NUPW, but rather as afriend of the newly-formed association,

said that he believes they have a genuinecause and are in need of industrial relations advice.

“I am here to give them support wherever that is needed. Personally forme I remember catching vans when Iwas going to school and when I firststarted to work, and I understand theenvironment that they work under. So forme if there is anything that I can do per-sonally, or if there is anything that my organisation can do to assist those members, we will do that. We will makesure we do those things in order to receive the best possible result,” he said.

McDowall commended the associationfor being “very reasoned” in their approach, asking for dialogue and notsimply threatening industrial action andinconvenience for the public.

“All they want to do is to have a meeting and I find that is a position that I can support,” he added. (JRT)

Some PSVoperatorsoptimisticabout aresolution

With thousands of schoolchildren expected on the road today, there is a question of whether PSVs will resolve their issues in time for the start of the term.

THE Board of Managementand members of the YoungWomen’s ChristianAssociation (YWCA) showedtheir appreciation to threeexceptional womenyesterday.

During school time, Elizabeth‘Gina’ Millington, AntoinetteCarmichael and MaureenBishop make their way to theYWCA’s Headquarters atDeacon’s Farm, St Michael inthe wee hours to preparebreakfast for those childrenwhose parents/guardians areunable to do so because offinancial difficulties.

“We wish to publicly expressthanks and appreciation tothese ladies for their diligenceand dedication to the BreakfastClub over the years,” PresidentMargaret Pollard expressedduring the presentation to thesurprised trio.

“The work of these ladies canbe described as a labour of lovebecause they only receive asmall stipend. However, theseladies receive great satisfactiondaily by not only providingbreakfast for the children butinteracting with them.Today, wesay a hearty ‘thank you’ as wepresent each of them with a foodhamper donated by Cherish

Cosmetique”.For the past 69 years, the

YWCA of Barbados, a non-governmental, not-for-profitorganization has beenpromoting the empowermentand development of women andgirls through advocacy andthrough the management andsupport of programmes.

The Breakfast Club launchedin 2007 has gone from serving a

nutritious breakfast to 30children, to providing that mealfor in excess of 1 300 children.

“The ladies serve childrenfrom the surrounding districtshere at our headquarters. But,there are teachers selected bythe principals of schools whichwe assist who come and collectbreakfast for students. Theprincipals know the needs of thechildren through these teachers

and they then relay it to us”.“Now because of the down

turn in the economy; morepeople being laid off – I believewe are going to see our numbersincreasing,” Pollard told TheBarbados Advocate, recallingthat during the 2017 academicyear, the YWCA served 20, 653meals to both primary andsecondary school children.

The new YWCA President also

shared that sponsorship to theBreakfast Club was fallensignificantly in recent years. However, dedicated to thesustainability of theprogramme, she said theorganization will carry outvarious initiatives to earn fundsto ensure that the nation’schildren are provided with ahealthy meal before going toclass. WHENEVER new taxmeasures are introduced inBarbados there is always therisk that revenue from the newimpositions will be less thanthe targeted amount.

This is the view of ClevistonHaynes, the Governor of theCentral Bank of Barbados, speaking at a recent function ofthe Barbados Chamber ofCommerce and Industry.

“That is a risk because youhave to understand the basewhich sometimes can besmaller, sometimes it turns outto be larger,” he said whilepointing to the behaviour of theValue Added Tax which wasintroduced on January 1,1997.

Haynes recalled that on thatoccasion the VAT netted amuch larger revenue takebecause the base was

underestimated relative towhat the revenues turned outto be. So you do have theserisks once you impose newtaxes and therefore you have tobe flexible enough to make theadjustments whether throughadditional tax measures, or bywhat you do on the expenditureside,” the top economist stated.

He said that in such casesthe margin of error tends to bevery small and that it is hopedgoing forward that the personswill have their cash flowincreased since the tax refundprocess has already started.

Haynes said that delays inthe implementation of taxmeasures will have an impacton Government revenue. Heexplained that once thishappens and the governmentis unable to implement on a

timely basis, then correctiveactions will have to be takeneither by additional taxmeasures or by containingexpenditure. In relation to theproposed online tax on foreignpurchases, the Governor saidthat fortunately they knew atthe outset that there wouldhave been some lag betweenthe announcement and theimplementation of that tax.

Therefore the revenue fromthat tax in a sense forms partof the mitigation for othermeasures which is not builtinto the estimates, whichunderpin the six per centtarget of what is required. Hesaid that if there isunderperformance elsewherein the tax system it will help to mitigate thatunderperformance.

YOU ARE APPRECIATED! Elizabeth ‘Gina’ Millington; President of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) MargaretPollard; Antoinette Carmichael; Maureen Bishop; and Clytie Vaughan, Assistant Secretary/ Treasurer of YWCA, during thepresentation at the Deacon’s Farm headquarters yesterday.

CONSUMERS from Page 1

put the case for their specificgrouping. To that end, hemaintained that more oftenthan not, the wants and needsof consumers will not factorinto their arguments.

“A social partnership is apartnership that has a socio-economic dimension attachedto it, those are the two prongs

and anytime you are dealingwith socio-economicdimensions you must considerconsumers. But yet the tradeunion representation, businessassociations – all of those arepart of the Social Partnership, but not one of them puts thecase for consumers despite thefact that every one of them is aconsumer,” he said.

Gibbs-Taitt added, “They are

consumers by default, butnobody is looking outspecifically for the consumer.Remember that a man whoowns a business becomes aconsumer at some point. Hemay own a business, he mightbe selling to consumers, but hehimself becomes a consumer atsome point, whether he buysfrom himself or somebodyelse”.

Contending again the needfor consumers to be bettereducated, he said such wouldgo a long way in ensuring thatthey begin to see themselvesas the important members ofsociety that they are.

“If there were no consumersthere would be no business inBarbados, no business wouldbe conducted, even the electionof a government would be in

crisis. Without consumersbusinesses can close theirdoors, that is the type of powerwe wield, but instead we goalong with the rest who aredifferent from us. So we needsome conscious consumers, until we get some consciousconsumers we will forever beignored as a people and as aneconomic people,” Gibbs-Taittmaintained. (JRT)

“Our students are enthused, they are in the classes, they arein the library. They are focused, which is just what you wantyour students to be.”

“We couldn’t be happier with... the bus co-op which is madeup of independent bus ownershere in Barbados. They havecome together as a co-op toserve our students. That wentvery well this morning. We arevery proud of what the wholeteam has done whether it isRoss,Adtalem, the Governmentof Barbados, what they havedone to help us... our newcolleagues, our new staff andfaculty members in Barbados. Itis really a great day to see it allcome together.”

“The campus is nothing shortof beautiful. It feels great tohave a space that we can callour home. That we can do ourthing, don’t have to worry aboutlandlords. Just to the extentthat Ross has gone to makesure we have enough studyspace, make sure it is top notch, and also the extent theGovernment has gone to makesure we have this available forourselves. I’m looking forwardto it. At the end of the day I amhere for one reason and that isto study and I believe I have allthe resources here,” Azarkhailsaid.

Commenting on theaccommodation at Coverley, hestated, “There are going to besome inherent growing pains inthe beginning, which we are allworking through. I commendthe students and faculty forbeing flexible, being patient, being cooperative, I know it isgoing to be an uphill battle interms of getting everythingsituated but I believe in time, once we get everything ironedout, it will be great and it will bewonderful for everybody.” (JH)

OPPOSITION LeaderBishop JosephAtherley isquestioning the rolesof two consultantswithin government’seconomic specialadvisory team.

Speaking to the mediaover the weekend, he saidthat the specific positionsof InternationalMonetary Fund (IMF)employee Dr. KevinGreenidge and ProfessorAvinash Persaud must bemade known to thepublic.

“I don’t know Dr.Greenidge very well, butfrom time to time I haveheard people expressingthe need they think forgreater clarity and Ishare that view as towhat his role is. Is he infact working for theBarbados government onsecondment from the IMFor is he in fact workingfor the IMF? The greaterquestion is perhaps, howmuch he is being paid andwho is paying him?”Atherley stated.

He had similar queriesregarding Persaud’ssalary, while noting thatthe economist was theexecutive chairman of thefailed Four Seasonsproject and had workedwith the formerDemocratic Labour Partyadministration.

“He is now workingclosely and prominentlywith this administrationand in fact, in manyinstances, appears to bethe primary spokesman,

outside of the PrimeMinister on matters ofthe economy and effortsto restructure theBarbados economy andaddress our debt and ourforeign reserves andthese type of things,” theOpposition Leader added.

Saying his confidence inPersaud had been shakenin relation to the FourSeasons project, Atherleystated that it remainedthat way now.

“My concern here isBarbados is on the brinkof economic disaster. We

have been told we havebeen rescued somewhatfrom the brink, but we arenot out of the woods. Butthe prominent voiceleading that charge againhas been ProfessorPersaud. My confidencein him with regards toFour Seasons was shakenand therefore that weakconfidence in him inrelation to hisinvolvement in thisexercise remains. Bajansneed to be addressed onthese matters,” he added.

STORM clouds willcontinue to brew forBarbados unless incomegenerating measures aresoon implemented insistsOpposition Leader BishopJoseph Atherley.

Saying the ministerialstatement delivered byPrime Minister MiaMottley last month inParliament lacked anymention of such actions, the St. Michael West MPwarned that withoutsectoral growth the islandmay find itself in a worseposition in a few years.

“We wonder if when wego through this period ofausterity over the nextfour years and if we doarrive at some ultimatejuncture, what after thisausterity program? In theabsence of growth, itmight up end that we arenot better off than we aretoday,” he asserted.

Atherley noted that thenew year brought “a sense

of trepidation” to citizens, especially public sectoremployees, who werewondering if they toowould be put on thebreadline.

“There is a sense ofuncertainty and fear. They feel the gatheringstorms about them, especially if they areemployed in the publicservice and especiallymoreso if they areemployed in one of thestate-owned enterprises,”he said.

In a conference with themedia on Saturday at hisParliament office, he alsoknocked the PM’s claimthat there was now “ashared burden” regardingtaxes, insisting thatlower-income earnerswould feeling the burdenmore heavily than thehigher-income earners.

He was joined bySenator Crystal Drakesand financial consultant

Bruce Hennis, both whomade it clear thatgovernment must notonly look at addressingthe fiscal deficit, but lookat revenue generation.

Hennis pointed out thatin the same way theisland had restructuredfrom being a sugareconomy, the islandneeded to now move todeveloping products andservices for export-ledgrowth.

“We have reached thisjuncture where we haveto rebuild our entireeconomy, moving frombeing a twin engine dieselpowered airplane to atriple powered jet. So thatis the level of change thatwe have to do and wehave to do it urgently, ifnot as Bishop Atherleyand Senator Drakes said, four years down the roadwe are pretty much goingto be in trouble again,” hestated. THE way continues to bepaved for Barbados andother Caribbeancountries to accessfinancing for boostingtheir economicdevelopment. Theinitiative is being pilotedby the Barbados basedCaribbean ExportDevelopment Agency(CEDA) through its AngelInvestor programme.

CEDA hosted a forumrecently in Trinidad andTobago where policymakers, entrepreneursand investors cametogether to work outlogistics and to targetfinancing forstakeholders.

The scheme is part of aLINK-Caribbeanprogramme implementedby CEDA with financialsupport from the WorldBank Group. Launched inSeptember 2016, LINKCaribbean is an initiativeof the EntrepreneurshipProgramme forInnovation in the

Whilelauding the programme,a CEDA official said thatthe agency is also seekingalternative fundingmechanism throughoutCARIFORUM countries.“Caribbean Export iscommitted to supportingthe region’s private sectorwith the implementationof the 11th EuropeanDevelopment Fund (EDF)Regional Private SectorDevelopmentprogramme,” saidChristopher McNair,Manager forCompetitiveness andExport Promotion atCEDA. that the LINK-Caribbeanhas successfullysupported thedevelopment of a rapidlyemerging Angel investingeco-system.Trident Angelfrom Barbados is one ofseven set up in the regionto pool resources. Access to financing

OVER the Yuletide Season, car parks atsupermarkets, banking institutions and otherbusinesses were awash with patrons, who were thereto conduct business during this busy festive period. As one can imagine, it appeared that there was notenough space for the vehicular traffic and on moreoccasions than can be counted, able-bodied driversunapologetically dropped their vehicles intodesignated parking spaces for the disabled withouta second thought.

We are not sure how many disabled persons weredirectly affected by this practice during theChristmas season, but we know that in general, thedisabled community has been crying out over theyears that the practice needs to stop. The BarbadosCouncil for the Disabled has over the years beenseeking to get an amendment to the Road Traffic Act,to make provision for parking spaces for thedifferently-abled and to fine able-bodied personswho use them. Indeed, they got their wish, as wordeventually came that Barbadians who continued topark indiscriminately in spaces reserved for thedisabled would have to pay a fine. This came as theprevious government moved to stamp out the badpractice, with amendments to the Road Traffic Act.However, the disabled community and theirstakeholders argued that the fines were too low andthe law needed to be enforced in a greater way.

Whether we agree or disagree with the amount ofthe fine, it is clear that by parking in a space allottedto the disabled, those who are able-bodied arebreaking the law. Therefore, Barbadians whopreviously turned a blind eye to the issue, shouldnow sit up and take notice. Walking a few moresteps to get into any building in Barbados cannotand will not hurt the average Barbadian, whoperhaps could do with the exercise anyway, given thesteep rise in chronic non-communicable diseasesacross the island.

Barbadians must also realise they need to be theirbrother’s keeper and in so doing, they must ensurethat they do not take advantage of, or make life atall difficult for those who are in a vulnerable group.Of course, this is not to suggest that disability hasanything to do with inability, but the idea is toensure that the members of the disabled communitycan operate on a level playing field. How frustratingit must be to turn up to a car park and find that anabled-bodied man or woman has taken the spotdesignated to you, simply because he or she could notcare less that you, a disabled member of society, needs the space allotted to disembark your vehicleto sit in a wheelchair or a motorised chair, so that youtoo can carry on with your daily activities, just likeanybody else. Considering that an accident or injurycould render any citizen disabled at any point intime, we really must consider how our thoughtlessactions affect members of the disabled community.

Yes, we understand the rush and crush of theholiday season and the need to do business swiftly. However, the law is the law.Just as we are cautionednot to run a red light or ignore pedestrians alreadycrossing on a zebra crossing on the street, we shouldpay attention to the other aspects of the law, even aswe make use of our vehicles whilst out and about. So as this New Year gets fully under way, with therush of the festive season now behind us, let ussimply place ourselves in the shoes of others andapply the Golden Rule. It will certainly becomeeasier to do the right thing, even when we think no one is looking.

THE PM has said she is trying to get further assurances from theEuropean Union so shecan win the Commonsvote on her Brexit dealnext week.

Theresa May said thatafter delaying the votelast month, there was“some further movementfrom the EU” atDecember’s EuropeanCouncil.

But Labour accusedministers of trying to“run down the clock” to“blackmail” the UK intobacking a “botched deal”.

The EU Commissionhas said there will be norenegotiation.

A spokesman said“everything on the tablehas been approved and...the priority now is toawait events” in the UK.

Meanwhile, more than200 MPs have signed aletter to Theresa May,urging her to rule out ano-deal Brexit – which isone where the UK leavesthe EU but without anyagreed arrangementscovering things like howtrade or travel will workin the future.

It comes as a major exercise involving morethan 100 lorries is beingcarried out in Kent to testout how to manage trafficqueues near the Channelports in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

The PM’s deal – whichcovers the terms of the

UK’s divorce and theframework of future re-lations with the EU – hasalready been agreed withEU leaders. But it needsto pass a vote by MPs be-fore it is accepted.

The UK is due to leavethe EU on March 29whether the deal ispassed by MPs or not.

Mrs. May, who was atAlder Hey hospital inLiverpool to launch a 10-year plan for the NHS,said that after delayingthe vote on her Brexitdeal last month, she at-tended the EuropeanCouncil, where there was“some further movementfrom the EU”.

She said she had beenspeaking to Europeanleaders in the interven-ing period.

“In the coming dayswhat we’ll set out is notjust about the EU butalso about what we cando domestically, so wewill be setting out meas-ures which will be spe-cific to Northern Ireland;we will be setting out proposals for a greaterrole for Parliament as we move into the nextstage of negotiations,”she said.

“And we’re continuingto work on further assurances, on furtherundertakings from theEuropean Union in relation to the concernthat’s been expressed byParliamentarians.”

‘Frankenstein monster’Responding to an urgentquestion from Labourleader Jeremy Corbyn, who asked for an updateon progress made inachieving legal changesto the withdrawal agree-ment, Brexit SecretaryStephen Barclay said theCommons debate wouldbegin on Wednesday.

He said Mrs. May hadbeen in contact with “anumber of her EU coun-terparts” over Christmasand said ministers “willbe clear on Wednesday”what developments havebeen made.

“Securing the addi-tional reassurance thatParliament needs re-mains our priority,” hetold MPs. “It’s a gooddeal, it’s the only deal, and I believe it is theright deal in offering cer-tainty for this country.”

But Mr. Corbyn calledMrs. May’s deal a“Frankenstein monster of a deal”.

“The government istrying to run down theclock in an attempt toblackmail this House andthe country into support-ing a botched deal,” hesaid.

“We’re now told, if wedon’t support it, the gov-ernment is prepared topush our whole economyoff a cliff edge.”

Government sourceshave told the BBC thevote on the deal is set

for Tuesday, January 15.The prime minister’s

deal is facing oppositionfrom many of her ownMPs, as well as Labourand other opposition parties including theRemain-supportingLiberal Democrats.

The DUP – which Mrs.May’s Conservative Partyrelies on for a majority inParliament – has said itwill not back the deal.

But Brexit ministerKwasi Kwarteng dis-missed suggestions thatthe government had accepted it would losenext week’s vote and wasplanning on returning toBrussels.

“The plan is to win thevote,” Mr. Kwarteng toldBBC Radio 4’s Today programme, adding thata week was “a very longtime in politics” and hewas “very hopeful” thedeal would be votedthrough.

Fellow minister MargotJames also urged MPs to back the deal butwarned, if they could notreach agreement, Brexitmight have to be delayedto allow for more negoti-ations.

“We have very littletime left,” she told theBBC’s Politics Live. “Wemight have to extendArticle 50. But I think it’svery unlikely Parliamentwill actually stare downthe barrel of that partic-ular gun.”

NEW Democratic con-gresswoman AlexandriaOcasio-Cortez has saidthere is “no question” thatPresident Donald Trumpis racist.

In an interview withCBS News, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez based her claim on “words that he uses, which are historic dogwhistles of white su-premacy”.

In a statement, theWhite House hit back atthe New York lawmaker’s“sheer ignorance on thematter”.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez tookoffice last week as the

youngest ever US con-gresswoman.

When asked by pre-senter Anderson Cooperwhether Mr Trump “is aracist”, the 29-year-oldleft-wing Democratic law-maker responded: “Yeah, yeah no question.”

“When you look at thewords that he uses, whichare historic dog whistlesof white supremacy, when you look at how he reacted to theCharlottesville incident, where neo-Nazis mur-dered a woman, versushow he manufacturescrises like immigrants

seeking legal refuge onour borders, it’s night andday.”

She also called Mr.Trump a “symptom of theproblem”.

“The president cer-tainly didn’t inventracism, but he’s certainlygiven a voice to it and ex-panded it and created aplatform for those things,”she said.

In a statement to CBS,the White House said thather “sheer ignorance onthe matter can’t cover thefact that President Trumpsupported and passed historic criminal justice

reform” and “has repeat-edly condemned racismand bigotry in all forms”.

Since her surprise elec-tion, Ms. Ocasio-Cortezhas become a lightningrod for the political right, which has criticisedeverything from her cloth-ing to a dance video thatshe made in college.

During the CBS inter-view, Ms. Ocasio-Cortezalso said she would beglad to embrace the labelof “radical”.

“I think that it only hasever been radicals thathave changed this coun-try,” she said.

BEIJING – China hasthe “good faith” to workwith the United States toresolve trade frictions, the Foreign Ministry said yesterday as officials of the world’s two largesteconomies resumed talksin a bid to end their tradedispute.

US officials are meet-ing their counterparts inBeijing this week for thefirst face-to-face talkssince US PresidentDonald Trump andChinese President XiJinping agreed inDecember to a 90-daytruce in a trade war

that has roiled globalmarkets.

Trump said on Sundaythat trade talks withChina were going verywell and that weaknessin the Chinese economygave Beijing a reason towork towards a deal.

Yesterday, USCommerce SecretaryWilbur Ross told NBCthe talks were being heldwith appropriate-levelstaff and would help de-termine how the admin-istration moves forward.

Ross also said he saw“a very good chance thatwe will get a reasonablesettlement that Chinacan live with, that we canlive with and that ad-

dresses all of the key is-sues”. He added that itwould be easiest to tackleimmediate trade butharder to resolve en-forcement issues andstructural reforms suchas intellectual propertyrights and market access.

The two sides agreed to hold “positive and constructive” dialogue toresolve economic andtrade disputes in accor-dance with the consensusreached by their respec-tive leaders, ForeignMinistry spokesman LuKang told a regular newsbriefing.

“From the beginningwe have believed thatChina-US trade friction

is not a positive situationfor either country or theworld economy. Chinahas the good faith, on thebasis of mutual respectand equality, to resolvethe bilateral trade fric-tions.”

Trump imposed importtariffs on hundreds of bil-lions of dollars of Chinesegoods last year and hasthreatened more to pres-sure Beijing to change its practices on issuesranging from industrialsubsidies to intellectualproperty to hacking.China has retaliated withtariffs of its own.

“As for whether theChinese economy is goodor not, I have already explained this. China’s development has ampletenacity and huge poten-tial,” Lu said. “We havefirm confidence in thestrong long-term funda-mentals of the Chineseeconomy.”

Lu also said VicePresident Wang Qishanwould attend the annualWorld Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland inlate January, but addedthat he had not yet heardof any arrangements for a meeting with Trumpthere.

By yesterday evening, few details had emergedof the trade talks, whichwere scheduled to runthrough Tuesday.

Although the talkswere held at a vice minis-terial level, Chinese VicePremier Liu He, who hasled trade negotiationswith the United Statesand is a top economic adviser to Xi, made anunexpected appearanceat the meetings yester-day, according to a personfamiliar with the discus-sions.

The US delegation, led by Deputy US TradeRepresentative JeffreyGerrish, includes undersecretaries from the US

departments of agricul-ture, commerce, energyand treasury, as well assenior officials from theWhite House.

Tu Xinquan, a Chinesetrade expert at Beijing’sUniversity ofInternational Businessand Economics, toldReuters before talksbegan that the meetingswould likely focus ontechnical issues andleave major disagree-ments to more senior officials.

“China’s economy issignificantly slowingdown, and the US stockmarket is decliningquickly. I think the twosides need some kind ofagreement for now,” Tusaid.

Data last week showed manufacturinghas slowed in both Chinaand the United States, though the US LabourDepartment on Fridayreported a surge in newjobs in December alongwith higher wages.

Officials have givenscant details on conces-sions that China might be willing to make to meet US demands, someof which would requirestructural reforms un-palatable for Chineseleaders.

Even if a trade agree-ment is reached soon, an-alysts say it would be nopanacea for China’s econ-omy, which is expected tocontinue decelerating incoming months.

China’s stridently na-tionalist Global Timestabloid said in an edito-rial late on Sunday thatstatements from bothsides that they hoped toreach a deal were causefor optimism, but thatBeijing would not cave into US demands.

“If China was going toraise the white flag, itwould have done it al-ready,” the paper said.

LONDON – Britishcarmaker AstonMartin has triggeredcontingency plans to cope with a po-tentially disorderlyBrexit, including hiring a new supplychain chief andpreparing to fly incomponents as well asuse ports other thanDover.

Britain, the world’sfifth largest economy,is due to leave theEuropean Union in just

over 80 days but a negotiated withdrawalagreement looks set to be voted down by UKlawmakers next week, making a “no-deal” exit– and disruption to trade– more likely.

Britain’s car industry, which employs over 850 000 people and is one of the country’s raremanufacturing successstories, has warned thatleaving the world’sbiggest trading blocwithout a deal would

add costs and could haltoutput due to snarl-ups.

Aston Martin ChiefExecutive Andy Palmersaid the luxury au-tomaker, which outlinedits contingency plans inOctober, had no choicebut to authorise them at a board meeting inDecember.

“I don’t think we’vebeen in a position in thelast two years wherewe’ve been further apartfrom understandingwhere we’re going to end

up,” Palmer told Reuters, declining to put a figureon the “accumulating”cost of the plans.

“We programme a carto align and order all the parts for those cars12 weeks in advance. You don’t need to do the maths to know thattherefore takes us acrossthe Brexit period.

“We have to preparefor the worst-case sce-nario.”

Aston Martin, the pre-ferred drive of fictional

secret agent JamesBond, joins a growing listof companies readyingfor a no-deal Brexit. Datalast week showed man-ufacturers ramping upstocks in preparation forpotential border delays.

Aston is signing dealswith supplier DHL toallow for the use of portsother than Dover –Britain’s busiest and somost likely to be dis-rupted by any customsdelays – and has autho-rised its supply chain

team to make air freightbookings.

The government hassaid it will prioritise themovement of key sup-plies such as medicinesif the flow of goods is hitafter Brexit, so it is un-clear what would happento other items.

“We don’t have any as-surances,” said Palmer.“One assumes if you’reputting parts onto a standard charteredplane, no one’s going tokick you off.”

FORD MOTOR CO said yesterday itplans to roll out a wireless technologyfor its new vehicle models in the UnitedStates, starting 2022, that will allowdirect communication betweenconnected devices.

The new technology called C-V2X, orcellular vehicle-to-everything, wouldaugment sensors used in self-drivingcars making the vehicle’s view fromradars and cameras morecomprehensive.

C-V2X could complement thesesystems in ways similar to how oursense of hearing complements ourvision,” said Don Butler, executivedirector for Ford’s connected vehicle

platform.Ford said in November it expects to

launch self-driving vehicles for sale by2021, when a new vehicle architecturedesigned specifically for autonomoussystems is expected to be ready.

The new technology will help cars toquickly send and receive informationabout their surrounding environment, helping drivers know what’s ahead ofthem before they can encounter it, thecompany said.

Navigating four-way stops wouldbecome easier with the technology, saidFord, as vehicles will be able tocommunicate with each other tonegotiate which one has the right of way.

THE U.S. Supreme Court yesterdaycleared the way for the attorney generalof Massachusetts to obtain records fromExxon Mobil Corp to probe whether theoil company for decades concealed itsknowledge of the role fossil fuels play inclimate change.

The justices declined to hear Exxon’sappeal of a ruling by the top court inMassachusetts holding that AttorneyGeneral Maura Healey, a Democrat, hadjurisdiction to seek records to probewhether the company misled consumersand investors.

The action by the high court markedthe latest setback for Exxon in its effortsto halt the Massachusetts investigationand a similar one by New York’sattorney general, who in October filed a

lawsuit against the company.New York’s lawsuit accused Exxon of

engaging in a systematic scheme todeceive investors about the impact thatfuture climate change regulations couldhave on its business. Exxon has calledthe claims “meritless.”

The Massachusetts and New Yorkinvestigations were launched following2015 news reports that Exxon’s ownscientists had determined that fossilfuel combustion must be reduced tomitigate the impact of climate change.

Those news reports, by InsideClimateNews and the Los Angeles Times, werebased on documents from the 1970s and1980s. Exxon said the documents werenot inconsistent with its publicpositions.

APPLE INC last Wednesday tookthe rare step of cutting its quarterlysales forecast, with Chief ExecutiveTim Cook blaming slowing iPhonesales in China, whose economy hasbeen dragged down by uncertaintyaround U.S.-China trade relations.

The news, which comes as a spotlightgrows on Beijing’s attempts to revivestalling growth, sent Apple sharestumbling in after-hours trade, hammeredAsian suppliers and triggered a broaderselloff in global markets.

The revenue drop for the just-endedquarter underscores how an economicslowdown in China has been sharperthan many expected, catching companiesand leaders in Beijing off balance andforcing some to readjust their plans in themarket.

“While we anticipated some challengesin key emerging markets, we did notforesee the magnitude of the economicdeceleration, particularly in GreaterChina,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in aletter to investors.

Apple finds itself in a tricky position inChina, a key market for sales and whereit manufactures the bulk of the iconicproducts it sells worldwide, after thehigh-profile arrest in Canada of the CFOof domestic rival Huawei TechnologiesCo Ltd.

Since the arrest last month, at therequest of the United States, there havebeen sporadic reports of Chineseconsumers shying away from Appleproducts. Even before then, local rivalslike Huawei had been gaining market

share over Apple.Cook told CNBC that Apple products

have not been targeted by the Chinesegovernment, though some consumersmay have elected not to buy an iPhone orother Apple devices due to the firm beingan American brand.

“The much larger issue is the slowingof the (Chinese) economy, and then thetrade tension that has further pressuredit,” Cook said.

Price tagSome analysts,however,questioned the

impact of Apple’s own actions, such as itsunyielding pursuit of high selling pricesfor its products.

Apple company logos are reflected onthe glass window outside an Apple storein Shanghai, China January 3, 2019.

“Apple sales in China have not beendoing well for a few quarters now, part ofthe reason is that their price points havegone too high - past the $1,000 mark,”said Kiranjeet Kaur, an analyst atmarket research firm IDC.

“(That’s) almost three times asexpensive as phones from other vendorsthat are filling the mass market.”

China’s smartphone market hasdropped sharply this year, with Appleand South Korean rival SamsungElectronics Co Ltd leading the fall, evenas some domestic peers have performedmore strongly.

Samsung said last month it wouldcease operations at one of its mobilephone manufacturing plants in China, after seeing its share of the Chinese

market drop to 1 per cent in the firstquarter of 2018 versus 15 per cent inmid-2013.

Forecast cutApple on Wednesday lowered its

forecast to $84 billion in revenue for itsfiscal first quarter ended Dec. 29, belowanalysts’ estimate of $91.5 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.Apple originally forecast revenue ofbetween $89 billion and $93 billion.

This marked the first time Apple hadissued a warning on its revenue guidanceahead of releasing quarterly results sincethe iPhone was launched in 2007.

Apple shares skidded 7.7 per cent inafter-hours trade, dragging thecompany’s market value below $700billion. In the broader market, the S&P500 futures fell 1.5 per cent. In the U.S.government bond market, a typical safe-haven, the yield on the benchmark 10-year, which moves inversely to the bond’sprice, sank to an 11-month low.

Precursors to a warningApple’s move was not entirely a

surprise. In November, the Cupertino,California-based company said it wouldquit disclosing unit sales data for iPhonesand other hardware items, leading manyanalysts to worry that a drop in iPhonesales was coming. And after severalcomponent makers in November forecastweaker-than-expected sales, somemarket watchers called the peak foriPhones in several key markets.

In November, Cook cited slowing

growth in emerging markets such asBrazil, India and Russia for lower-than-anticipated sales estimates for thecompany’s fiscal first quarter. But Cookspecifically said he “would not put Chinain that category” of countries withtroubled growth.

As China sales weaken, Apple cutssales forecast

That all came before the damage to theChinese economy from trade tensionswith the United States and long-simmering structural issues becameevident.

Apple is now the highest-profilemultinational corporation to warn thatthe economic slowdown in China couldhurt its business. Automakers such asFord Motor Co, Hyundai Motor Co andNissan Motor Co Ltd all previously saidthey planned to cut production in thecountry.

But Apple has held firm on its premiumpricing strategy in China despite the riskof a slower economy.

“The question for investors will be theextent to which Apple’s aggressive pricinghas exacerbated this situation and whatthis means for the company’s longer-termpricing power within its iPhonefranchise,”James Cordwell, an analyst atAtlantic Equities, told Reuters.

In the latest fiscal year, ended Sept.29, unit sales of the iPhone wereessentially flat from the prior year, whileiPhone revenue expanded 18 per cent to$166.7 billion. That growth came entirelyfrom higher prices.

Almost one in three of us (30%) areseverely sleep deprived, accordingto research from the Mental

Health foundation. While screen time, stress, poor health

and even whether you sleep in socks areoften cited as contributing factors, it isall-too-easy to overlook the influence ofdiet.

Recent studies have found the timingof when we eat, as well as the specifictype of foods we consume, can affect thequality and duration of our sleep.Everything from consuming too muchsugar and caffeine at the right times toeating late at night can interfere withour ability to sleep properly, according tonutritionist Jenna Hope.

She tells Yahoo Style UK what to eat,and when, throughout the day in orderto guarantee the best possible night’ssleep.7am

A good breakfast sets you up for theday, but what is the best choice for sleephealth?

Hope recommends a breakfast high inprotein and slow-release, complexcarbohydrates, to keep your energylevels steady throughout the day.

She says: “I recommend eggs onsourdough with avocado or a bowl ofporridge made with jumbo oats. Jumbooats take longer to break down meaningthey’ll keep you fuller for longer.”

If you want to drink caffeine, do it now– “I recommend having it in themorning to prevent it affecting yoursleep later on in the day.”

11am

Once again, during the mid morningperiod it’s important to keep energylevels steady to avoid having a dip –which will make you feel sluggish andlethargic long before bedtime. Avoidhigh sugar options, advises Jenna, andgo for a handful of nuts, or oatcakeswith cottage cheese or hummus.”

1pmLunchtime is late enough in the day

to start thinking about foods which willset you up for a good night’s sleep: inthis case, fibre.

Hope says: “It can be really temptingto go for a white bread sandwich whichcan leave you feeling tired.

“Instead opt for a high fibre salad orfalafel and hummus wrap. Fibre isessential to gut health and 90% of thesleep hormone melatonin is secretedand absorbed in the gut so it’s essentialthat you support it with a high fibrediet.”

3pmTime to step away from the coffee,

says Hope – unless you want to bebuzzing when you settle down into bedat night.

“Caffeine has a half life of six hoursmeaning that an afternoon coffee canstill have stimulatory effects in theevening. It blocks the release of aneurotransmitter called adenosinewhich helps you to feel sleepy.”

Thankfully, a fibre-based fruit and nutsnack can give you the energy boost youneed without compromising your abilityto wind down later.

“Opt for an apple and an herbal tea ora date and nut bar, like Squirrel Sistersor a Naked bar. They’re also a source offibre to help support your gut.”

6pmWhile this may seem like an early

dinner time for some, Hope stresses it’sthe earlier the better when it comes toeating your evening meal – in order toprevent digestion affecting your abilityto sleep.

As for what to eat, look for foodscontaining tryptophan.

Hope explains: “You want to belooking to incorporate foods whichcontain tryptophan. Tryptophan is anamino acid which helps the productionof serotonin (a key hormone required toproduce melatonin – the sleephormone).

“Foods containing tryptophan include:tofu, turkey, chickpeas, yoghurt andoats. A chickpea curry or a tofu orturkey stir fry is also a really goodoption.”

12pmIt is tempting to have a snack or even

a midnight feast when you wake up lateat night, but Hope isn’t a fan of thisbehaviour.

She says: “ I wouldn’t advise eatingduring the night as this can affect yourbody’s ability to sleep. During the night, our body temperature tends to drop tohelp us stay asleep.

“But when we eat we stimulate thedigestion process which increases ourbody temperature and can actuallyimpair our ability to go back to sleep.”

SAGE THERAPEUTICS Inc saidyesterday its oral treatment forpostpartum depression met the maingoal of reducing symptoms of thecondition, when compared to a placeboin a late-stage study, sending its sharesup 33 percent.

Patients treated with SAGE-217showed an improvement in theHamilton Rating Scale for Depressionthat scores a patient on 17 differentparameters, including anxiety andinsomnia after two weeks of treatment, the study results showed. Theimprovements were maintained untilthe end of the follow-up period in thefourth week, Sage said.

Postpartum depression is consideredthe most common medical complicationlinked to childbirth, affecting one in ninewomen in the United States, accordingto the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention.

The results come months after theU.S. Food and Drug Administrationextended the review of theMassachusetts-based drug developer’slead drug Zulresso, an injectable thataims to treat postpartum depression, bythree months.

Certain patients who were on Zulressoexperienced loss of consciousness, whichwas flagged as a safety concern by FDAstaff reviewers as well as members of anadvisory panel to the health regulatorduring a meeting in November.

However, there were no reports ofsuch loss of consciousness in SAGE-217trial.

Stifel analyst Paul Matteis said thelack of reports of loss of consciousnesswould help quell investor concerns thatstemmed from Zulresso.

SAGE-217 was well-tolerated, but onepatient being administered the drugdiscontinued treatment because of aside effect, the company said.

“SAGE-217’s profile is highlyencouraging and qualitatively lookscleaner to us than what one mightobserve/glean from the FDA label ofother oral GABA drugs, such as Xanax,”Matteis wrote in a note.

Postpartum depression typicallyaffects women from the third trimesterof pregnancy or within four weeks aftergiving birth.

The company’s shares surged 33.3percent to US$130 before the bell.

NEW EUROPEAN research has foundthat a higher intake of eggs, around oneegg a day, may help lower the risk of type2 diabetes compared to those who eat thefood less frequently.

Carried out by researchers at theUniversity of Eastern Finland, the newstudy looked at 239 blood serum samplesfrom participants taking part in theKuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease RiskFactor Study (KIHD) in easternFinland.

The samples were analyzed in fourgroups: subjects with higher egg intake, defined as an average of one egg per day;a lower egg intake, defined as an averageof two eggs per week; those who ate eggsand developed type 2 diabetes; and thosewho remained healthy and acted as acontrol group.

Participants were also followed for anaverage of 19.3 years.

The findings, published in the journalMolecular Nutrition and Food Research, showed that the blood samples of menwho ate an egg a day included certain

lipid molecules that were positivelylinked with the blood profile of the groupof healthy men who remained free oftype 2 diabetes.

Certain molecules in the blood samplesfrom men who developed diabetes werealso correlated positively with thosefound in the loweregg intake group.

In addition, the researchers also foundthat a higher level of the amino acidtyrosine in the blood predicted a higherrisk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Previous findings from the same studyhave also suggested that eating roughlyone egg per day is linked with a lowerrisk of developing type 2 diabetes amongmiddle-aged men.

“The purpose of the current study wasto explore potential compounds thatcould explain this association using non-targeted metabolomics, a technique thatenables a broad profiling of chemicals ina sample,” says early stage researcherand lead author of the study StefaniaNoerman from the University of EasternFinland.

However, a high intake of eggs haspreviously been discouraged, due to theirhigh level of cholesterol. On the otherhand they are a rich source of nutrientswhich are beneficial for health, andopinion has been divided on theirpotential health effects.

The current findings suggest that

there are potential metabolites whichcan explain how consuming eggs isassociated with a lower risk of type 2diabetes, although the researchers notethat further studies are needed.

“Although it is too early to draw anycausal conclusions, we now have somehints about certain egg-relatedcompounds that may have a role in type2 diabetes development. Furtherdetailed investigations with both cellmodels and intervention studies inhumans that use modern techniques, such as metabolomics, are needed tounderstand the mechanisms behindphysiological effects of egg intake,”concluded Noerman.

Most of what is consumed by apregnant woman is passedalong to her growing baby.

Some things can be beneficial for thebaby while others can be harmful. Therefore, women who are pregnantshould be careful about what they putinto their bodies.

This is particularly true when itcomes to the use of drugs, many ofwhich can be harmful to the unbornchild – including alcohol, tobacco, andillegal drugs as well as prescription andover-the-counter (OTC) medications.Studies have shown that thesesubstances can have a direct impact onthe fetus. Caffeine, which is found incoffee, chocolate and some soft drinks,is also considered a drug and itsconsumption by pregnant womenshould be limited, as it too can havedamaging effects on the fetus.

Illegal drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy can seriously harmthe unborn child. Their use duringpregnancy increases the risk ofmiscarriage, premature andunderweight babies, stillbirth, birthdefects and behavioural problems in

early childhood. Babies can also be bornaddicted to the drug(s) used by theirmother during pregnancy andexperience withdrawal after birth.

Alcohol consumption duringpregnancy can result in Fetal AlcoholSyndrome and related disorders, thesymptoms of which include but are notlimited to: abnormal facial features, deficiencies in height and weight, central nervous system problems, learning disabilities, hyperactivity, physical deformities, vision and hearingproblems. There is no safe limit foralcohol use during pregnancy. Smallamounts can sometimes be just asdamaging as binge drinking – theconsumption of large quantities ofalcohol in one session. Therefore,

pregnant women should avoid alcoholuse, particularly during the firsttrimester when it is especiallydangerous.

Caution should also be exercisedwhen using prescription and OTCmedications, some of which should notbe used under any circumstancesduring pregnancy due to the increasedrisk for birth defects and other harmfuleffects on the developing fetus.

OTC drugs include common painkillers, antihistamines anddecongestants, just to name a few. While many OTC drugs are consideredsafe, the safety profile of some isunknown while the safety profile ofothers changes depending on thegestational age of the fetus. Therefore,

pregnant women should always checkwith their doctors before taking anyOTC medications.

Some women have chronic conditionswhich require ongoing or frequent useof prescription medications, such asasthma, epilepsy, hypertension, diabetes and depression. As such, theywill be required to take medication tocontrol their condition duringpregnancy. Like OTC drugs, the safetyprofile of some prescription medicationsis not known or can differ depending onthe stage of pregnancy, while others areconsidered unsafe. Therefore, womenwho are pregnant or may becomepregnant should discuss theirprescription medications with theirdoctor.

In general, drug use should beavoided where possible duringpregnancy. In cases where it cannot beavoided, medical advice should besought. Likewise, pregnant women whouse, or may be addicted to, illegal drugsshould seek assistance from theirdoctors and treatment professionals.

TRINIDAD – PoliceCommissioner Gary Griffithsays he has been workinground the clock since he tookoffice last August, and tolddoctors he was stressed, missing meals, and notsleeping properly, and this mayhave contributed to his bodycrashing.

He told Newsday: “I amrunning my blood to water, destroying my body in an effortto make this a safer country forour citizens, and I wouldcontinue to do so. Yet some, ironically, have found a voicethat the only thing that theycan do to fix TT, and a fewothers, who defend criminalswhen we arrest them, is to tryto undermine what I am trying

to do because of their ownselfish agenda.

“For decades every citizencomplained, and rightly so,that criminals have taken overthe country and the TTPS isnot doing enough.

“However, after a few monthsunder my watch, a handfulwith absolutely no knowledgeor experience in lawenforcement now suddenly geta voice and all of a sudden it isa 180-degree turn and they findthat the police is now doing toomuch, and using too muchexcessive force.

“It is the right of citizens togive views, but not when you liewith false information to try todeliberately affect the TTPSfrom doing their job.”

Nevertheless, in spite of thisand his physical reaction to jobpressures, he said, “I do notintend to slow down, I intend togo up a gear.”

On Sunday, Griffith told hiswife Nicole he was in pain andthey decided to go to the StClair Medical Centre. Griffithsaid his body “crashed” and hehad to receive intravenous fluidsas part of treatment.

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada –President of the Grenada BarAssociation (GBA), Lisa Taylor, yesterday, defended the decisionof lawyers to stage a silentprotest, outside the SupremeCourt Registry, warning of a crisisin the entire judicial system,“which threatens publicconfidence in this system”.

“The immediate catalyst for usbeing here, today, was a directiveor an ultimatum, given by theGrenada Bar Association inSeptember 2018,” she said, adding“we say to the governmentof Grenada, enough is enough; itcannot stand that in 2019, 15

years on from the destruction ofthe Court, that we are stillwaiting for a permanent solution, something more than what hasbeen done, has to be done”.

The GBA said that theauthorities have notdemonstrated with “sufficienturgency and action that theyaccept that there is such a crisis, that they intend to deal with thiscrisis, once and for all, and howthey intend to do so”.

It said that the protest was alsointended to call upon the KeithMitchell government “to come upwith an urgent plan tocomprehensively address all of

these issues”.The GBA said that following

the “complete shutdown” of allcriminal and civil high courts inGrenada in May,2018,it gave thegovernment until the end of lastyear, to provide suitableaccommodations to collectivelyhouse all High Courts andancillary services.

“Every suggestive Governmenthas blame to carry in this matter. We have been calling on theauthorities to arrest the decay ofthe registry and, in 2019, we arenot satisfied that anything of thisnature that we have called thegovernment to do, has been

attempted,”Taylor said.“We ask that the authorities

come to terms with the realitiesand cause the fix to happen,” shesaid, while calling on thegovernment to allocate thenecessary funding to the Ministryof Legal Affairs or the relevantline ministry, so that a solutioncan be identified and beimplemented.

President of the Organisationof Commonwealth Caribbean BarAssociations (CBA), RugglesFerguson, said that the underlineproblem with regionalgovernments is that the judiciaryalways gets low priority.

The GBA said recentpronouncements, about a long-promised Hall of Justice, refer todesign drawings sitting at theoffice of the Attorney-Generalwith no indication as to whenconstruction may possibly start, adding the situation at theRegistry continues to present acrisis for Grenada.

Last week, Legal AffairsMinister, Kindra Mathurine-Stewart, said that thegovernment is continuing towork, assiduously, to address thehousing of civil and criminalcourts and other mattersaffecting the legal fraternity.

PRIME MINISTER Dr.Keith Rowley Sunday nightunofficially launched hisruling People’s NationalMovement (PNM) campaignfor at least three elections, including the 2020 generalelections here bycomparing the perfor-mances of his three year oldadministration to that ofthe former People’sPartnership administra-tion.

A statement from the Officeof the Prime Minister had onSaturday indicated thatRowley would deliver anaddress to the nation that willbe broadcast in two parts, butwhat transpired on Sundaynight was a re-broadcast of anevent where the prime ministeraddressed several political andeconomic issues confronting hisadministration since it came tooffice in September 7, 2015.In the first section of thebroadcast titled “Mind yourBusiness”, Rowley appeared tobe setting the agenda for notonly the 2020 general election, but also the upcoming LocalGovernment and Tobago Houseof Assembly (THA) electionsthat are due later this year andearly next year.

He told the nation that whenthe government came to powerin 2015, the revenue from theoil and gas industry was anestimated one billion dollars(One TT dollar=US$0.16 cents)as compared with TT$17 billionin 2014 when the previousgovernment headed by KamlaPersad Bissessar was still inoffice.

He said then that the price ofa barrel of oil was US$90 ascompared with as low as US$28dollars during hisadministration’s term.

He accused the past

administration of providing gascompanies with concessions, including complete tax writeoffs during the period 2013-14that led to a further decline finthe economic situation and thatit had also “wasted” more thanTT$29 billion in cash that hadaccrued from the sale of oil andgas by state-owned entities.

Rowley told the nation thatprojects estimated at TT$12.5billion, which hisadministration is nowembarking upon, including theconstruction of hospitals, thepurchase of ferries for Tobago, tourism projects, could havebeen financed under the “cash”wasted by the previousadministration.

Rowley also defended thedecision of his government toallow the Jamaica-based hotelchain, Sandals, to operate herein the next few years, notingthat many Caribbean countriesare befitting from the presenceof the hotel chain.

Rowley told the nation that in2019, his administration has toallocate TT$68 out of everyTT$100 to spend on debtpayments and public sectorwages, salaries and pensions.

The Office of the PrimeMinister said that the secondpart of the “address” would beaired on television last night.

In an immediate reaction tothe first broadcast, PersadBissessar said “we do notexpect anything from Part twoof the Rowley show, and thePrime Minister should havespent his time focusing onviable solutions and a plan tomove the country forward.

“The country has long lostconfidence in the PNM(People’s National Movement)and are crying out for a returnto sound leadership and goodgovernance,” she said.

An owner of the facilityhas been charged withcreating a fire hazard thatled to the blaze on Friday.

The girls died after thefire broke out while theywere playing in a room ata venue in the northerncity of Koszalin.

In the game populararound the world, playersare locked in a room andgiven a set amount of timeto solve a series of riddlesto get out.

The venue owner, whowas arrested on Sunday, has been charged with“creating the danger of afire in the escape roomand with unintentionallycausing the death of peo-ple in a fire”, a spokesmanfor the Koszalin districtprosecutor is quoted assaying by the Polish PAPnews agency.

The man also neglectedto ensure that the roomhad escape routes,he said.

The accused man hasdenied any negligence orwrongdoing, his lawyerssay.

A 25-year-old man wasalso seriously injured inthe blaze which started ataround 5 pm local time (4 pm GMT) on Friday.

Leaking gas cylindersare believed to havecaused the blaze in thesmall room which meas-ured 7.3 square metres(78 square feet).

The girls, all aged 15,were visiting the attrac-tion in Koszalin to cele-brate a birthday.

Participants are gener-ally locked in a room andmust solve a series of puzzles in order to get out.

The industry has grownrapidly in recent years.

Escape games arethought to have begun inJapan about a decade ago,and one in Hungary, which opened in 2011, isbelieved to have been thefirst in Europe.

Budapest is one of theworld's hubs for the genre, and it is estimated thereare around 1 000 inPoland.

In the UK, the numberof escape rooms soaredfrom just seven in 2013 tomore than 1 000 as of lastyear.

The authorities have ordered that all escaperooms around the countrynow be checked to ensurethey meet safety stan-dards.

Firefighters inspectednearly 200 facilities acrossPoland over the weekend. They said more than 100were found to be unsafeand 13 were immediatelyshut down.

Prime MinisterMateusz Morawieckivowed on Sunday to closeescape rooms that failedto meet safety standards.

He also announced a review of more than 1 000escape rooms or relatedfacilities in Poland to determine whether newregulations were needed.

Interior MinisterJoachim Brudzinski saidon Sunday Poland wouldimpose harsh fines andsanctions on businessowners whose premisesdid not comply withhealth and safety stan-dards.

He also urged parentsto report potential safetyviolations at venues.

Flames and toxic smokespread quickly, and fire-fighters – responding toan emergency call – usedspecialised equipment tobreak in, but it was already too late.

The teenagers are believed to have died of asphyxiation. Their funerals are due to be heldon Thursday.

Polish PresidentAndrzej Duda said the fire was an “appallingtragedy”.

WORLD BANKPresident, Jim YongKim has made the sur-prise announcementthat he is steppingdown after six years inthe post.

His resignation will takeeffect from February 1.

Kim, 59, was not due toleave until 2022, after hewas re-elected for a secondfive-year term in 2017.

He will “join a firm andfocus on increasing infra-structure investments indeveloping countries”, theWorld Bank said.

In a statement, Kimsaid, “It has been a great honour to serve asPresident of this remark-able institution, full of passionate individualsdedicated to the mission ofending extreme poverty inour lifetime”.

No reason was given forhis unexpected resigna-tion.Kristalina Georgieva, the World Bank’s chief executive officer, will assume the role of interimpresident.

Climate stanceKim has avoided publicclashes with PresidentTrump, but his policy approach was sometimesat odds with the presi-dent’s approach to climatechange.

Under Kim, the WorldBank has ended its sup-

port of coal power projects– in contrast to Trump’spromise to revive the UScoal industry.

In April, Kim bowed topressure from the Trumpadministration over loanpayments to China. TheWorld Bank agreed tochange its lending struc-ture in order to secure a$13 billion capital increasefrom the US.

The World Bank has aremit to finance interna-tional development projects. Formed in 1947to help rebuild Europeancountries devastated byWorld War II, it supportsinfrastructure projectswith traditional loans,

interest-free credits, andgrants.

SuccessionKim, who was born inSeoul, South Korea, trained as medical doctorbefore rising through theranks at the Bank.

He was nominated byformer US PresidentBarack Obama for his firstand second terms as World Bank president.

The World Bank said itwould “immediately startthe process” of appointinga replacement.

Traditionally, the presi-dent of the World Bankhas been nominated by theUS, while the head of its

sister institution, theInternational MonetaryFund has been picked by European countries. However, when Kim wasfirst appointed in 2012,there was growing pres-sure from countries in thesouthern hemisphere for a candidate from anemerging market countryto be appointed at theWorld Bank.

Positioned at 41 inForbes’ Power People 2018list, Mr Kim has presidedover the dispersal of billions of dollars of WorldBank funding. In 2018, themultilateral institutionmade financial commit-ments worth $67 billion.

ITALY takes its dress codeas a matter of permanentnational priority. Eachprofession has its own of-ficial or de facto uniform.

Italy’s Interior MinisterMatteo Salvini has chosento defy the code by wear-ing shirts with police orfire service insignia.

He says this is a sign ofhis support for the respec-tive forces.

However article 498 ofItaly’s criminal code decrees that it is illegal towear a public official’suniform or badges.

The fines for transgres-sion range from 154 eurosto 929 euros.

‘Disrespect for the uni-form’Italy’s firefighters’ union, angered by public cuts, believes that Salvinishould be punished forbreaking this law.

“You can’t make people

believe that they’re infront of a policeman whenyou’re not,” it said in astatement.

“Why the interest inusing the uniforms ifthat’s not followed by tangible acts? It is obviousto everyone that us, thefire services, loved byeveryone, have not beengiven a single extra euroin next year’s budget andwe are stuck with a contract that is irregular.”

Salvini’s political oppo-nents accuse him ofgrandstanding by wearingpolice and fire service uniforms.

“I think it’s extremelyserious,” the authorRoberto Saviano told radiolisteners.

“It’s disrespect for theuniform. It seems like anact of solidarity and looseness and it isn’t atall... It’s an abuse.”

‘Source of pride’The Interior Ministerhimself rejects the criti-cisms.

“For me to receive thegift of jackets and badgesfrom the security forces isa source of pride!”, Salviniposted on his Facebookpage.

“It is a recognition of the

President Donald Trump will visit theUS-Mexican border this week, his spokes-woman said yesterday, in the latest bid topressure Congress over border wall negotiations that have led to a partial government shutdown.

He will “travel to the Southern borderon Thursday to meet with those on thefrontlines of the national security and humanitarian crisis,”Sarah Sanders saidin a tweet.

The visit was announced as the WhiteHouse and Democrats controlling thelower house of Congress refused to cedesignificant ground in what has becomeone of the biggest political challenges ofTrump’s turbulent presidency.

Trump is demanding more than US$5 billion to fund construction of what he calls a “wall” to stop illegal immigrants. Democrats have dismissedthe project as a political stunt.

In retaliation Trump has refused to signa wider spending package – leavingswaths of the government without funding and hundreds of thousands ofemployees facing delays in their paychecks.

The standoff has morphed from a debate over how to stem illegal immigra-tion to a powerplay between the president and a Democratic Party enjoying control of the House of Represen-tatives following their victory inNovember’s midterm legislative elections.

THE Canadian government is treatingthe disappearance of a woman fromQuebec and her Italian friend in BurkinaFaso as a kidnapping, media reports say.

Edith Blais,34,and Luca Tacchetto,30,were last heard from on December 15 inthe city of Bobo-Dioulasso.

The pair were travelling in WesternAfrica and were making their way to Togofor a humanitarian project.

Canada has travel advisories forBurkina Faso, due to terrorism and kid-napping.

“We’re really worried because… thecommunications stopped abruptly andevery kind of activity, every trace justcompletely vanished,” Blais’ sister,Melanie Blais, told CTV News.

“They weren’t worried about anything. They were having a really happy trip.Shehas been dreaming about travelling toAfrica for all of her life.”

A Facebook group set up by friends andfamily of Ms Blais says the couple wereheading to Ougadougou to sell their car, but never made it to the Togo border crossing or applied forvisas.

The Canadian government has a travel

advisory warning against all travel inBurkina Faso along the Togo border because of threats of “banditry and terrorism”.

Radio-Canada reported that theCanadian government is treating their

disappearance as a kidnapping, although the kidnapping has not beenconfirmed.

Global Affairs Canada told the CBC itis treating Blais’s case as “extremely highpriority.”

A TENNESSEE woman serving lifein prison for the 2004 murder of aman who solicited her for sex as a girl has been granted clemency.

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam ordered the release of Cyntoia Brown,30,after almost 15 years behind bars.

She was tried as an adult and convictedin 2006 for murdering a Nashville estateagent when she was 16.

Prosecutors said it was robbery.Brownsaid she was a child sex-trafficking victimwho fired in self-defence.

Her case drew support from celebritieslike singer Rihanna, reality TV personality Kim Kardashian West, comedian Amy Schumer and NBA starLeBron James.

Brown’s incarceration was the subjectof the 2011 documentary “Me Facing Life:Cyntoia’s Story”.

She told the film-makers that she waspicked up in Nashville by a 43-year-old es-tate agent, Johnny Allen, who agreed topay her $150 to have sex and drove her tohis home.

However she said that once at Allen’shome, he groped her roughly and thenrolled over to reach the side of the bed.

Brown said she feared he was going toget a gun so she shot him.

Prosecutors at the time alleged thatshe killed the victim as he was sleeping, and stole his money, guns and lorry beforefleeing the scene.

They claimed that she was motivatedby greed, but her defence lawyers argued

that she was afraid of returning homeempty-handed to her violent pimp, whowent by the nickname Kutthroat.

After entering a plea of self-defence, ajury found her guilty of first-degree pre-meditated murder, first-degree felonymurder and aggravated robbery.

In a statement yesterday, the state’sRepublican governor said he had orderedthat Brown be released to parole super-vision on August 7 this year.

“Cyntoia Brown committed,by her ownadmission, a horrific crime at the age of16,” the statement said.

“Yet, imposing a life sentence on a juve-nile that would require her to serve atleast 51 years before even being eligiblefor parole consideration is too harsh, es-pecially in light of the extraordinary stepsMs Brown has taken to rebuild her life.

“Transformation should be accompa-nied by hope.”

Brown, who has earned an associatedegree while in prison, said she would doeverything to justify Governor Haslam’sfaith in her.

“I am thankful for all the support, prayers and encouragement I have received,” she said in a statement.

“We truly serve a God of second chancesand new beginnings.

“The Lord has held my hand this wholetime and I would never have made itwithout Him.”

She will be eligible for release onAugust 7, after serving 15 years behindbars.

“However, we are unable to confirmthis information at this time.”

US officials have previously estimatedthat the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)

have more than 700 foreign fighters incustody coming from around 40 differentnations.

The men were arrested along with twoPakistanis and one Irishman in an oper-ation to clear a region of northern Syriaof remaining IS fighters, says the SDF.

According to Seamus Hughes fromGeorge Washington University’sProgram on Extremism, Clark had submitted a CV and cover letter to ISasking “to get a position teaching Englishto students in the Islamic State”.

AN 18-year-old Saudi woman who fledher family at the weekend has leftBangkok airport “under the care” of theUN refugee agency, the head of Thailand’simmigration police says.

Thai immigration officials had tried toreturn Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, 18,to Kuwait, where her family is.

However she refused to board a flightyesterday and barricaded herself into herairport hotel room.

She said she feared her family wouldkill her as she had renounced Islam.

“My brothers and family and the Saudiembassy will be waiting for me inKuwait,” Mohammed al-Qunun toldReuters.

“My life is in danger. My family threat-ens to kill me for the most trivial things.”

Rights groups including Human RightsWatch have expressed grave concerns forMs Mohammed al-Qunun,who had trav-elled to Thailand for a connecting flight toAustralia, where she hoped to seek asy-lum.

The Thai authorities said her statuswould be assessed by the UN refugeeagency (UNHCR).

Yesterday evening local time,Thailand’s chief of immigration policeSurachate Hakparn confirmed that MsMohammed al-Qunun was “allowed tostay”, and that she “left the airport withthe UNHCR”.

He earlier said the country would “takecare of her as best we can”, adding, “Sheis now under the sovereignty of Thailand;no-one and no embassy can force her to goanywhere.

“Thailand is a land of smiles. We willnot send anyone to die.”

Surachate said he would meet Saudidiplomats today to clarify Thailand’s de-cision.

Mohammed al-Qunun tweeted that herfather had arrived, “which worried andscared me a lot”, but said she felt safe

“under UNHCR protection with theagreement of Thailand authorities”.

Thailand is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention and provides nolegal protection to asylum seekers although there are more than 100 000refugees in the country.

An injunction filed by Thai lawyers inBangkok criminal court to stop the deportation was dismissed earlier yesterday.

Mohammed al-Qunun says that whenshe arrived in Bangkok on Saturday, her passport was seized by a Saudi

diplomat who met her coming off theflight.

Thailand initially said she was beingdeported because she did not meet the requirements for a Thai visa.

However, Mohammed al-Qunun insisted she had a visa for Australia, andthat she never wanted to stay inThailand.

Saudi Arabia said the Thai authoritieshad stopped the young woman for “violat-ing the law”.

Yesterday, police chief SurachateHakparn said the Thais had been tippedoff by Saudi officials, adding, “The SaudiArabia embassy contacted the immigra-tion police...and said that the girl had runaway from her parents and they fearedfor her safety.”

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia directorfor Human Rights Watch, told the BBC,“It seems that the Thai government ismanufacturing a story that she tried toapply for a visa and it was denied... in fact, she had an onward ticket to go toAustralia, she didn’t want to enterThailand in the first place.”

Mohammed al-Qunun drew attentionto her plight through social media postsover the weekend. She also gave a friend,Noura, access to her Twitter account, saying it was in case anything shouldhappen to her.

AT least seven people have died in theAlps during a weekend of heavy snow, with skiers facing a high avalancherisk in Austria, Germany and Italy.

Two separate avalanches killed twoGerman skiers in Austria’s Vorarlbergmountains. A third skier died inPongau district, near Salzburg.

In Bavaria, a skier died when a treecollapsed near Bad Tölz. An avalanchekilled a young woman in Bavaria’sTeisenberg mountains.

Two climbers died in the ItalianAlps. A mountain rescue team foundtheir bodies in the area of 2 800m (9186ft) Mt Cristalliera, in the Alpsnorth of Turin. Rescuers are searchingfor several missing people elsewhere inthe Alps.

The second-highest avalanchewarning level is now in force across theAustrian Tyrol and in much of theBavarian Alps.

Skiers have been warned to avoidany off-piste skiing, and manymountain roads have been closedbecause of the avalanche risk.

Italy is in the grip of a cold snap –snow has even reached Matera, in thefar south. There is also snow on MtVesuvius near Naples – a rare sight.

The heavy snow has forced manyschools to close temporarily acrossBavaria, and has disrupted some trainservices there.

More heavy snow is expected in thecoming days – as much as 120cm (4ft)of fresh snow in Austria by Thursday.

SOME 200 million years ago inwhat is now Warwickshire, adolphin-like reptile died and sankto the bottom of the sea.

The creature’s burial preserved itsskull in stunning detail – enablingscientists to digitally reconstruct it.

The fossil, unveiled in the journalPeerJ, gives a unique insight into thelife of an ichthyosaur.

The ferocious creature would havefed upon fish, squid and likely othersof its kind.

Its bones were found in a farmer’sfield more than 60 years ago, but theirsignificance has only just come tolight.

Remarkably, the skull is three-dimensionally preserved and containsbones that are rarely exposed.

"It’s taken more than half a centuryfor this ichthyosaur to be studied anddescribed, but it has been worth thewait,” said palaeontologist DeanLomax of the University ofManchester.

Thanks to data collected from CTscans, researchers Nigel Larkin andLaura Porro were able to digitallyreconstruct the entire skull in 3D.

“CT scanning allows us to lookinside fossils – in this case, we couldsee long canals within the skull bonesthat originally contained blood vesselsand nerves,” said Dr. Porro.

The ichthyosaur was originallyidentified as a common species, butafter studying it in more detail, scientists identified it as a rareichthyosaur called

Protoichthyosaurus prostaxalis. There have been previous studies of

large marine reptile skulls that havebeen reconstructed but they areincomplete.

“We were also able to digitally editthe original skull, i.e. move bonesaround and manipulate them so thatthey are in life position,” said DeanLomax..

LG has revealed a consumer ver-sion of its roll-up TV set at the CEStrade show in Las Vegas.

The Signature OLED TV R is built ona concept unveiled last year, in whichthe screen retracts into a base whennot in use so it is less obtrusive.

LG plans to sell the device in the USbefore the end of 2019, but has yet toreveal the month or price.

Experts say the technology is un-likely to become a mass-market propo-sition for many years to come.

“It’s a 4K set rather than 8K, so youcould argue there’s a compromise there– but otherwise this is a very high-enddesign that is going to be very costly,”commented Jack Wetherill from theconsultancy Futuresource.

The South Korean firm also showedoff another TV that will compete withthe fold-out model for flagship status:a 88in (224cm) model that was de-scribed as being the biggest OLED setto date.

Much of the presentation about itcentred on its use of machine learningto finesse its picture quality.

That represented a tacit acknowl-edgement that there is little native 8Kcontent available as yet, so users willbe reliant on upgraded 4K and highdefinition imagery.

In addition, the firm said that itswider range of new smart TVs wouldinclude access to Amazon Alexa as wellas Google’s Assistant, which was addedlast year.

Relatively few devices have workedwith both the two rival virtual assis-tants to date.

Speaker-maker Sonos has notablytaken longer than expected to deliveron its promise of combining the twointo a single device.

In LG’s case, the two platforms willbe accessed via its own ThinQ softwarerather than directly.

Its press conference showed a usercommanding them via a TV remotecontrol, suggesting that a different

button press determined which of thetwo assistants was invoked.

Samsung’s new TVs will also offeraccess to both Amazon and Google’splatforms too, although it will priori-tise its own smart assistant Bixby.

“I see it as an acceptance that there’sa very large group of users alreadyusing Google and Amazon’s AIs,”remarked Paul Gagnon from the consultancy IHS Markit.

“It would be pretty hard for a company to stand in the way of thatprogress and not cut out potential buyers.”

LG also said its TVs would be among

the first to natively support Apple’sAirPlay technology, allowing them tostream footage and audio from iPhonesand iPads as well as be controlled bySiri.

LG dedicated much of the rest of itspress conference to explaining how itshousehold appliances could be made to anticipate their owners’ wishes byallowing the company to monitor people’s wider behaviour.

One example involved its ThinQ soft-ware offering to deploy a robot vacuumbecause it had detected its owner pick-ing up another cleaning device.

Another involved the dishwasher

ordering itself new detergent becauseit had run out.

In general, things ran much moresmoothly than last year when thefirm’s US marketing chief DavidVanderWaal tried to demo a robotcalled Cloi, which repeatedly ignoredhis commands.

However, right at the end of the lat-est event the firm failed to mute his mi-crophone, so that the last words heardwere Mr. VanderWaal saying: “That’s awrap – one glitch on the video.”

One of the firm’s displays failed towork as intended during the TV sectionof the press conference.

ADS for a Britain First petition to stopa mosque being built in Maidstone,Kent, appeared on Facebook over theChristmas period, despite the groupbeing banned by the social network.

The three ads and the page on whichthey originated have now been re-moved, after BBC News contactedFacebook.

Political Gamers TV says this is unfair as it has no direct links withBritain First and just reports its activities.

Britain First says it is suingFacebook for “political discrimination”.

‘Hate speech’Political Gamers TV told BBC News:“If any of our paid ads went against theFacebook policies, why were they ap-proved by Facebook in the first placeduring the review process which allads go through?”

The ads were first spotted and reported to Facebook as hate speechby user Brian Whelan on January 2and he received a standard responsefrom Facebook saying that the page inquestion did not “go against one of our

specific community standards”.A day later, when the BBC got in

touch, it had changed its mind.“We thank the BBC for bringing the

page Political Gamers TV to our atten-tion, which violated our policies andhas now been removed,” Facebook toldBBC News.

“We urge people to use our reportingtools if they find content that they believe violates our community stan-dards, so we can continue to take ap-propriate action such as this.”

Political Gamers TV told BBC Newsit was “a new, growing patriotic gamingyouth movement... here to defend therights of gamers and games from theunfair treatment of male gamers com-ing from SJWs [social justice warriors],feminists and left-wing activists”.

Facebook banned Britain First in March, removing the pages of itsleader and deputy for violating its community standards.

‘Political gerrymandering’In a statement on the latest develop-ment, the group accused Facebook ofgetting too involved in politics.

“Facebook censored Britain First, cutting off 2.7 million of our support-ers.

“Now, they are deliberately targetinganyone who posts content supportiveof Britain First.

“This is political gerrymanderingand censorship at its worst.

“This is why Britain First is suingFacebook for political discrimination,

in Belfast High Court.”Mr. Whelan told BBC News: “The

Political Gamers channel is much moresmall fry – but it shows that Facebookare still taking ads from such groupsand aren’t able to filter out the groupsthey publicly said they will ban.

“Nobody from Facebook was in touchto say they had banned the account, orclarify anything.”

LG’s screen folds out when in use and then retracts. The premium TV also features a soundbar built into its base so it canbe used to play music when the display is hidden. (PHOTO: PA)

Wilson, a Class 4 student at Charles F.Broome Primary after transferring from The People’s Cathedral PrimarySchool in the summer holidays, defeatedeach of her six opponents when the three-day event concluded at HarrisonCollege on Saturday.

The impressive performance by Wilson, who won a sub-category gold medalamong the Under-10 females at lastyear’s CARIFTA Chess Championshipsin Suriname, confirmed her place in the Barbados team for this year’s edition, which will be held in Curaçao over the Easter period from April 18 to April 23.

Both the boys and the girls weremerged into one section in the Under-10age-group but champions were crownedin each gender. As it turned out, the topthree players were all girls.

Wilson was so dominant that she wasassured of the title going into the finalround of games. Her Charles F. Broome

schoolmates Tedra Gibson and ChanonReifer-Belle both finished on four-and-a-half points with Gibson capturing second place on the tie-break.

Alec Welch of St.Gabriel’s was the boys’champion with three points while theSatheeshkumar brothers, Diyas (2) andBavin (1.5) of Wills Primary took secondand third places respectively.

In the Under-8 division, where boysand girls were also merged, another St. Gabriel’s student Alexander Berrywon the top prize with a fine showing toearn five-and-a-half points.

Berry won five games and had a drawin the third round with schoolmate OliverMcGee who finished second with five points. Kez McClean Clarke of The People’s Cathedral was third with four-a-half points in a keenly contestedsection.

DEFENDING champions LeighSandiford and Vanessa Greenidgeromped to the under-14 titles with100 per cent winning records tohighlight the middle age-groups inthe 2019 Barbados ChessFederation’s National Youth & CadetChampionships.

Sandiford, a CARIFTA gold medallistin 2015, took the boys’ crown by winningsix consecutive games, while Greenidge, who won silver at last year’s CARIFTAChampionships, achieved a similar featamong the girls in the three-day eventthat concluded last Saturday at HarrisonCollege.

Once Sandiford scored a victory in thefourth round over his Harrison Collegeschoolmate Yeshua Hill, the only otherFIDE rated player in the section, he wasthe clear favourite to emerge championand was assured of the triumph ahead ofthe final round.

Hill took the silver medal with four-and-a-half points, winning a tie-breakerwith Alexandra student NicholasRussell-Griffith after both players werelevel on points.

Greenidge, a member of the Barbadosteam at the 2018 Olympiad in Batumi,Georgia and the only FIDE rated playerin the female Under-14 category, was alsoguaranteed retention of her title beforethe final round.

Greenidge’s Queen’s Collegeschoolmate Erin Mahon captured secondplace with four-and-a-half-points whileAlesha Lovell of Ellerslie was third withfour points.

One of the closest battles in theChampionships was in the boys’ Under-12 division where Tarquin Clark of WillsPrimary was crowned champion afteredging out Harrison College’s Jaydn Gillon a tie-break. Both players scored fivewins and drew their head-to-head clashbut Clark, last year’s Under-10 king, prevailed on the second tie break onaccount of playing against opponents

with a higher tally of points. The keen battle in this division was

also reflected by another tie break todecide third place which went to KevionPerch of Graydon Sealy Secondary afterhe and Taariq Callender of St JudesPrimary both ended on four-and-a-halfpoints.

In the female Under-12 category, therewas another clean sweep of the boards asQueen’s College’s Savannah Corriganregistered six successive wins to lift herfirst national title.

While Corrigan was a runaway winner,it was a close call for second placeinvolving three players who finished onfour points. In the end, the tie-breakfavoured Alexandra’s Jalia Linton aheadof third-placed Anouska Pitamber ofPeople’s Cathedral and fourth-placedSamara Mayers of Charles F. Broome.

Rooney was arrested by theMetropolitan Washington AirportAuthority at Dulles InternationalAirport, which is located in the northernVirginia suburbs of Washington.

The 33-year-old forward came to theUS capital last July, signing with DC

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM– Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggestedhe will be judged on playing style ratherthan trophies if he is to land theManchester United manager’s job on afull-time basis.

Solskjaer, appointed as interim bosslast month to replace the sacked JoseMourinho, has made clear that he wouldlove to stay at Old Trafford beyond theend of this season, when his temporaryarrangement is set to expire.

The former United striker, on amanagerial loan from Norwegian clubMolde, has not spoken to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward about a longerstay.

However, he feels that the key to beingseen as a success is to return to theattractive, attacking football that theclub played for much of Alex Ferguson’snear 27-year reign as manager.

Ferguson won 38 trophies beforeretiring in 2013 but his United teamwere also renowned for their positivefootball, which many fans felt wentmissing in the final year of Mourinho’sreign.

Solskjaer, when asked what wouldconstitute success and improve hischances of getting the job permanently, said: “If we get to the summer and peopleare talking about the way ManchesterUnited are playing. “If the style we’replaying, it reminds us of Sir Alex’s team,if it reminds us of the successful times.”

Solskjaer said he is keen to wintrophies this season but suggested thatthe style, for now, was more important.

“It has to start with the way we playbecause results you cannot control,” hesaid. “You can control how you approachthe game and how you play.

“And of course, it’s about trophies – ifyou can get to the final of the FA Cupand get a trophy. Let’s see in May if it’sa success or not.”

Solskjaer has won his first fourmatches at the helm, including a 2-0victory at Newcastle on Wednesday, andhopes to extend that run whenChampionship strugglers Reading visitOld Trafford in the FA Cup on Saturday.

However, he expects there to besetbacks as he attempts to improveUnited’s Premier League position fromsixth over the second half of the season.

LONDON – Ferrari are set to replaceFormula One team boss MaurizioArrivabene with technical head MattiaBinotto after failing to win any titles lastyear, Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sportreported yesterday.

The sports daily, in a front-page story, said a formal announcement could comeby the end of the day. The officialFormula One website also picked up thereport.

A team spokesman said he was notaware of anything imminent, however.

Ferrari won six of the 21 races lastseason but their title challengeevaporated in the second half of the yearand Mercedes won both the drivers’ andconstructors’ crowns for the fifth year ina row.

Arrivabene’s tenure has lookeduncertain for some time, with reports asfar back as October, 2017 suggestingBinotto could replace the former PhilipMorris marketing executive.

Strategic blunders by the team lastyear only increased the pressure.

The death in July last year ofchairman Sergio Marchionne triggered achange at the top, with Louis Camilleritaking over as chief executive and JohnElkann, a scion of Italy’s Agnelli family,as chairman.

The autosport.com website reportedArrivabene’s ousting had been confirmedby senior sources within the team andsaid Elkann had decided Binotto was theright man to lead the team forward.

The Ferrari veteran, who has risenthrough the ranks to technical director

and overseen a big step up in engineperformance, has also reportedly been atarget for rival constructors.

Ferrari’s drivers for the 2019 seasonare four-times world championSebastian Vettel, runner-up to Mercedes’Lewis Hamilton last year, and Monaco’sCharles Leclerc who has replaced KimiRaikkonen.
