2020 I ISS UE 31 I TERM 4 I WEEK 3

Hello from the Creative and Performing Arts Faculty!

What a year! For so many of us in the creative and performing arts the past few months have seen many changes and complications, but despite the lack of art gallery openings, live music and live theatre our students have taken on each and every new challenge with enthusiasm and a determination to explore our world in a variety of creative ways.

Firstly a huge congratulations to our current HSC students in Music, Visual Arts, Drama, Photography, Video and Digital Imaging and Ceramics as they undertake their final HSC Examinations after a tumultuous year. In Term 3 we had the practical examinations and the submissions of Body of Works in all CAPA subjects with some exceptional artworks and performances presented to the NESA markers. Every CAPA HSC teacher is beyond proud of Year 12’s success as they have navigated the many changes and challenges presented to them. Currently a public showcase of HSC Visual Art Body of Works from across the Rivers Secondary College is on display at the bottom on the elevators at Lismore Square. The showcase will be on display until Thursday 12 November.

From the CAPA Faculty

Year 11 and 10 Visual Arts are on a journey of self-expression undertaking individualised Body of Works using materials and mediums of their choice to create artworks around a certain theme or concept. Year 9 Visual Art have been exploring the world of street art, creating and painting skateboard decks that reflect their personal art style. Each student has worked diligently through a research, sketching and then creation process focused on developing their drawing and painting skills.

Music is smashing it out of the park with new recording equipment that allows students to create their own backing tracks and record their performance audio. Junior classes are using LMMS to create their own digital music compositions in the film and television unit. The new Year 12 cohort are starting to select their performance options for the HSC and are rocking it out in their practical classes.

Photography classes in Stages 5 and 6 have been venturing in the world of contemporary photographic practices with the creation of triptych portraits and miniature worlds. We are so lucky here at Richmond River High Campus to have access to a traditional dark room where students are producing exceptional black and white photographs.

With the lack of live theatre to attend, Year 9 Drama have been exploring the world of Australian Theatre exploring our diverse theatrical history and moving into the new world of contemporary Australian theatre by learning about the process of scriptwriting. Year 10 Drama are learning the important process of what it takes to direct a production after designing and creating their costumes and props during Term 3. It has been amazing to see the way industry has adapted to changes in 2020 with a wide variety of live theatre made accessible online for students to watch from The National Theatre in London and Australia’s Bell Shakespeare Company.

CAPA are looking forward to our Year 6 into Year 7 Transition days where we will be meeting the new and upcoming rock stars, artists and performers that will be venturing through our gates in 2021. Richmond River High Campus has a strong culture of the creative and performing arts and we are excited for the new generation of students to come.

Aurora College iRes Rather than a Residential School this term, due to COVID-19 restrictions, our Aurora students had a virtual experience! On Monday and Tuesday this week they had many activities and guest speakers including celebrity mathematician Adam Spencer, Dr Norman Swan, and author Melina Marchetta. It was an opportunity for students to “virtually” interact with their peers, friends and teachers. Our students thoroughly enjoyed using the iSee 3D virtual environments during break times. LOTE News Year 7 Japanese classes have been learning the words for Japanese clothing and shoes in a short unit on Japanese clothing, which has also featured non-folding fans, and the Obon Dance, which became famous in the 1980s from the movie, Karate Kid 2. The photos show 7Cyan dressed in summer kimono (yukata), with various happi coats, ready to do the Obon dancing which all Year 7s have enjoyed immensely - accolades to 7Yellow in particular.

In Bundjalung classes, Uncle Glen Rhodes is working to build students’ knowledge of country and expand their sentence building capability in Bundjalung. Students can make "I am..., There are..." sentences, and 3-4 sentences joined for short paragraphs. 7Purple have been particularly motivated and enthusiastic in Uncle's classes.

Ongoing learning this term will feature further use of Education Perfect to revise Dates, days and birthdays, with students completing a birth month calendar over the next fortnight.
