THE BABY CAKES – e New Orleans Baby Cakes continue a season- long nine-game road trip tonight with game two of a five-game series against the Iowa Cubs. e ‘Cakes dropped nine of 16 meetings last year, including five of eight at Principal Park, and have not won the season series from the I-Cubs since 2013. YESTERDAY’S NEWS – e Iowa Cubs pounced on New Orleans with nine runs in the first two innings getting a big performance from Taylor Davis and Efren Navarro. Davis had four hits and six RBI and Navarro added four hits and scored four runs. e Cubs scored a season high 13 runs on a season high 18 hits in the 13-3 rout of the ‘Cakes. Ben Meyer took the defeat for New Orleans allowing four runs in two thirds of an inning, the shortest start of any starter this season for the ‘Cakes. e ‘Cakes scored a pair of runs in the third inning without the benefit of a hit and didnt pick up their first hit in the game until the fiſth inning. ON THE HILL – Trevor Richards will make his tenth start of the season this evening. He made five starts with Miami and was 0-2 with 4.94 ERA, he is 2-1 in four starts with the ‘Cakes and makes his first career start today against the Iowa Cubs. In his last start, Richards worked six innings allowed three runs, two earned in a loss to Round Rock. Rich- ards was honored as the Marlins’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2017 by going 12-11 with a 2.53 ERA (41 ER/146.0 IP) in 27 games (25 starts) between High-A Jupiter and AA Jacksonville. He set career highs in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts (158) in his first full minor league season and led Miami’s system in ERA and strikeouts. MAY DAYS – New Orleans boasts a .290 team batting average this month trailing only Albuquerque (.302), Salt Lake (.295) among PCL clubs. e ‘Cakes had hit just .225 in April, the club’s lowest over a full month since hitting .222 in May 2008, while the .290 mark would be the best over a full month since hitting .298 in July 2011. ARMS RACE – Over the last eight games, the Baby Cakes pitching staff owns a 9.14 ERA (65 ER/64.0 IP). ‘Cakes starting pitchers had a 2.25 ERA (45 ER/ 180.0 IP) over the previous 27 games and an opponents batting average of .205 (139x679). New Orleans starters had turned in a quality start 15 out of 17 games before their recent stretch which has produced one quality start in the past eight contests (Trevor Richards on Sunday). HOT SOUP – Over his last 25 contests, dating to April 26, Eric Campbell is batting .407 (37x91), second in the PCL in that span to Fresno’s J.D. Davis (.442). His .495 on-base percentage also ranks second while his 37 hits are tied for third-most. Campbell has hit safely in eight of nine career games vs. Iowa, going 10x35 with five doubles, a home run and seven RBI. WALK-OFF WONDERS – ursday night was the Baby Cakes’ seventh walk-off defeat of the season, surpassing their total from all of last year. New Orleans held the lead entering the opposition’s final at-bat in each of the previous four walk-off losses, and led in the eighth inning last night. DEAN OF HITS – In his first 23 games with New Orleans, Austin Dean is hitting .317 (26x82) with 16 RBI and 12 walks for a .414 on-base per- centage. Dean was hitting .420 (34x81) in 22 games with AA Jacksonville and was honored as April’s Southern League Player of the Month aſter pacing the circuit in batting average, hits, total bases (53), slugging percentage (.654) and OPS (1.120). His .368 batting average overall ranks 10th in MiLB, and he is one of 11 players in the minors to amass 60 hits. TOMAS THE TANK – Tomas Telis has a hit in 10 of his last 12 games, batting .452 (19x42) with seven multi-hit efforts and 10 RBI. In 11 games vs. Omaha, he is hitting .457 (21x46) with nine RBI. SIR ISAAC - Isaac Galloway has 11 stolen bases, tied for third-most in the PCL, and has tied Colin Porter’s record (61) for most stolen bases in franchise history. Galloway ranks eighth on the club’s career leaderboard in games played (322) and last night he moved ahead of Chris Aguila for eighth place in at bats. He has also moved ahead of Jason Alfaro for seventh in runs scored (150). LONELIEST NUMBER – e Baby Cakes have played 15 one-run games (6-9), and 26 games decided by one or two runs (11-15), third-most in the PCL to Round Rock (28) and Iowa (27), Omaha (27). NOLA has won its last five one-run affairs at home, but has dropped all eight on the road. STEAL AWAY – Rafael Ortega improved to 9x9 in stolen base attempts on Wednesday, the most of any player in the PCL without being caught. TAKE A SEAT – Richards recorded his second career 10-strikeout game when he blanked Biloxi for 7.0 innings on 7/9. From 7/1 through year end, his 71 strikeouts were fourth-most in the Southern League.
