The first day of Annual Conference ended in joyous cel-ebration. The conference gathered in the convention center for the

first ever Mozambique Mingle, held to acknowledge the tenth anniversary of the Missouri Conference’s covenant with the conferences of Mozambique.

This wasn’t an Annual Conference Session you wanted to leave early. On Monday morning, Bishop Robert Schnase intro-duced Rev. Emanuel Cleaver II as his new assistant for African American leadership development.

The position is part-time. Cleaver will continue to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, but Monday morning he was all preacher.

“I’m thrilled at the prospect of ripping and running across the state, dealing with colleagues in ministry who are younger, who share my attitude that we will take a back seat to no other denomi-nation,” Cleaver said. “To black pastors, fasten your seatbelts, we’re going to do many things we haven’t done before, and cre-ate our rightful place throughout

Missouri.”Cleaver read the parable of

the five talents, which tells how the faithful servant put his talents to use and multiplied the value, while another servant acted out of fear and hid his talent away.

“Fear got him in trouble,” he said. “Fear is the worst use of the imagination that God has given us.”

Cleaver noted that the servant didn’t do anything wrong, he just did nothing. He wasn’t a prodigal,

Ordination is the culmina-tion of years of preparation and examination required before someone becomes an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. At the end of the ordi-nation service, the Missouri Conference traditionally has an altar call, in which people who are present who have experi-enced a call to ministry come forward.

But how did those who are on stage, including those leading the service, experience their call to ministry? Bishop Robert Schnase began the service by quoting psychologist Carl Rogers, “What is most personal is most uni-versal.” Then the three bishops present proceeded to tell their stories.

Mozambique Bishop Joaquina Nhanala’s father was Catholic and her mother was Methodist. She attended both churches, but preferred the Methodist church because she spoke the language there, and it had good youth programs. She became engaged to someone whom she met in youth fellowship. He told her that he would like to go into ministry.

“I said, ‘I love you very much, but not as a pastor,” she said. She had seen the struggles of pas-tors she had known, and didn’t want that to be part of her home life. She convinced her husband that they could be very active, supportive lay members, and he didn’t need to become a pastor.

It was ten years and four chil-dren later that she experienced a call to ministry, while her hus-band was out of the country for work.

“When he came back, I said, ‘Remember what we talked about when you wanted to become a pastor?” she said. “Now I’m not only ready to become a pas-

Vision: Growing, fruitful, vibrant congregations changing lives

through Jesus Christ.

I’ve just returned from four days conferring together with the pastors and laity of Missouri United Methodist churches. Over sixteen hundred of us gathered to worship, teach, preach, serve, learn, remember, deliberate, decide, ordain, vote, commission, pray, renew, laugh, sing, cry, play, encourage, eat, listen, celebrate, and recommit ourselves to the mission of the church and the ministry of Christ. It was quite an experience! As soon as we fin-ished, I headed for Nebraska to repeat the exercise with United Methodists from that area, and a few weeks ago I did the same with the good folks from Kansas West.

As I reflect upon the three experiences, I find both the simi-larities and the differences strik-ing. Conferences are huge under-takings that require extraordinary planning and preparation. They work best when their purpose derives from our founder.

John Wesley describes the first such gathering this way: “In June, 1744, I desired my brother and a few other clergymen to meet in London, to consider how we should proceed to save our own souls and those that heard us. After some time, I invited the lay Preachers that were in the house to meet with us. We conferred together for several days, and were much comforted and strengthened thereby. The next year I invited not only most of the Travelling Preachers, but several others, to confer with me at Bristol. And from that time for some years,

though I invited only a part of the Travelling Preachers, yet I permitted any that desired it, to be present…..This I did for many years, and all that time the term Conference meant not so much the conversations we had together, as the persons that conferred; namely, those I invited to confer with me from time to time.”

From Wesley’s description we discover that “conference” refers not only to the conversations and deliberations of the early Methodists as they “conferred” together, but also to the people themselves. A “conference” of Methodists sounds almost like the collective plural, like a flock of birds, a herd of cattle, a gaggle of geese, or a hassle of bishops!

What strikes me from Wesley’s early description is the purpose and result of the early conferences. The purpose was to confer togeth-er on how best to do the work God entrusts to us, or in Wesley’s language, on “how to save our own souls and those who heard us.” Conferences were a learning expe-rience, a time for mentoring, shar-ing, equipping, and encouraging one another to more fruitful min-istry. A sense of purpose pervaded the conversations. And the result was that all those who participated felt “comforted and strengthened” in their work of ministry. They felt confirmed, supported, and encouraged to continue the minis-try with renewed vision and vigor. The time together fed their eager-ness to reach out, to transform lives, to offer Christ, to relieve suf-

fering in Christ’s name.Since those original confer-

ences so long ago, the notion of an annual conferring has evolved. Conferences now risk becom-ing business meetings, focused on budgets, personnel, reports, policies, rules. They’ve become deliberative rather than discern-ing, policy-oriented rather than purpose-driven, governing rather than equipping, procedural rather than inspirational. Some of this is essential to our common life, but business and political models for conference can also dull creativ-ity, deaden the spirit, misdirect purpose, reduce innovation, and replace mutual encouragement with mutual distrust. Conferences can become conventions, gather-ings of opposing parties or of conflicting points of view, each desiring to overtake and outvote those with different claims and priorities. “Have we won or lost?” takes precedent over “What have we learned?” or “How have we encouraged one another to greater ministry?”

What I hope our conferring achieves is rather simple: clarity and confidence. I hope pastors and laypersons leave conference with a greater clarity about our mission and a greater confidence about our future. I hope conference inspires the people called United Methodists to take greater respon-sibility for creating more ministry that serves the purposes of Christ. I hope we talk each other into courageous new initiatives in the name of Christ. I hope we feel

connected in a way that stimu-lates us to risk new challenges. I hope we feel better equipped and that we learn something, and feel strengthened by our connection to our colleagues and by our rooted-ness to our forbearers and to our traditions. I hope we find our-selves renewed in Christ. I hope we have learned (or experienced) something that helps us “save our own souls and those who hear us,” and I hope we feel “comforted and strengthened” for ministry.

The music, worship, prayers, fellowship, fun, service, laughter, tears, and even the deliberation and decision and voting, should unify and embolden us for our mission, provoking us to risk new and greater initiatives to reach out to people with the gift and demand of God’s grace. That’s the conferring that I love.

I give God thanks for our time together, and for the tasks God entrusts to us. As one of our preachers this year said, “Lord, put us in over our heads!”

What do you think is the pri-mary purpose of annual confer-ence? What gives you strength and comfort for your ministry? What gives clarity and confidence?

I have discovered that for me all the high-point moments at confer-

ence are about people. This year’s high points included the presence, teaching, and leadership of two extraordinary leaders, Bishops Joaquina Nhanala and Hope Morgan Ward. The memorable and meaningful times included the teaching and preaching of our own Revs. Emanuel Cleaver, Robyn Miller, and Jim Bryan; the panel of newer clergy with Geovanna, Eric, Rena, Terry, and Jenn; the work-shop leaders; those who provided the “somewhere out there” inter-ludes; the musicians and singers; the ordinands, the commissioned and the retirees; and all the little conversations here and there with youth, chaplains, college students, mission personnel, and guests. All the best moments are people moments, and I learn from them all, and I feel strengthened and connected for Christ’s work by our connections at conference.

Yours in Christ,

Robert Schnase, BishopMo. Conference of the UMC

Foundation supports clergy education, local congregations

David Atkins, director of Missouri United Methodist Foundation, reported to the Annual Conference that in 2008 $329,500 in endowments went to 58 churches and $109,750 in scholarships were awarded.

“John Wesley was educated at Oxford, loved to share his love of the Holy Spirit and believed in education,” Atkins said. “That’s why the Missouri United Methodist Foundation provides scholarships for the servant-lead-ers of tomorrow.”

The Foundation provides $3,000 for full time students and

$1,500 for half-time students, for a total of up to $90,000 for all stu-dents per year.

There’s a close relationship between the foundation, local con-gregations and clergy.

“Each of the five people who were on the leadership panel this morning have benefited from a foundation scholarship,” Atkins said.

Atkins says thank you to the many participants of the Missouri United Methodist Foundation. It is through their support that the foundation is able to provide the endowments and scholarships.

The Foundation is also able to

give $500 scholarship because of the estate plan of the Stella Kahrs Fund for Seminary Scholarships.

As a part of the mingle, participants had a time of fellowship revolving around a meal and dessert. There were also stations throughout the ballroom where people could expe-rience elements of life in Mozambique.

Bishop Joaquina Nhanala of Mozambique was hon-ored by Bishop Schnase for her leadership in Mozambique and was presented with a cherry bowl and vase. She was also presented with an Episcopal stole to celebrate her election as the first female Bishop in Africa.

Bishop Nhanala also presented several gifts to Bishop Schnase, his wife Esther and Conference Lay Leader Brian Hammons.

In a message of gratitude and hope, Bishop Nhanala thanked the conference for the official ten-year covenant and for all of the unoffi-cial connections that existed prior to the creation of the covenant.

She described the covenant as a collaboration in which there are not givers or receivers, but that we are brothers and sisters together. She said that the covenant has brought leadership development to clergy, has taken churches from gathering under trees to worship-ing in buildings, which provides, “...better conditions to worship God.”

She expressed appreciation for those who have traveled to Mozambique. “You have been a part of the spreading of the gos-pel through coming,” she said. She stated that the support of volunteers and financial support-ers brought hope to the people of Mozambique through help during floods and droughts.

Bishop Nhanala stated that the covenant has many tasks ahead and that God is not done with his plans for Mozambique.

“We still have diseases, we still have poverty. There are still pas-tors who are not trained. We do

not have capacity to receive new children. The church still has work to do,” she said.

Bishop Nhanala announced some new focuses for mission.

“We are now going to build a house for displaced widows, women sent away by relatives and chased away from homes as widows or women abandoned by husbands,” she said.

Ezekiel Nhantumbo was hon-ored with a plaque for his new home for his work in Mozambique as a messenger throughout the nation and for his leadership in the Maputo office.

Carol Kreamer was then honored for her leadership in establishing and continuing the covenant partner relationships between the Missouri Conference and Mozambique, and her 10 years of service to the Mozambique Initiative.

Youth Delegate Michael Sweeney of the Mid-State District said: “I did not know that our ministry in Mozambique was so strong. I have been inspired now to become involved and I hope to go for myself.”

The covenant celebration continued on Sunday morn-ing. Bishop Joaquina Nhanala came to the podium and told the Conference what the covenant means to her.

“As I look back over the past 10 year I see what the difference with the covenant between our two conferences has made,” she said. “We need to be the church that God expects us to be, seeing us

move from our Jerusalem to our Samaria or Mozambique—which is like the end of the world. An explosion of evangelism is taking place because of the covenant. We have seen people leaving what they believe and being transformed through words, moving from the abstract to concrete, seeing faith and seeing love.”

Bishop Nhanala said she has had an opportunity while in Missouri to see how the covenant has given both conferences an opportunity in practical ways to be one body even though we are many. She has also seen, in these past ten years, how we are a global church. The gifts that are brought from Missouri in material ways have allowed her to see the relationship move from people who give and people who receive, to a relationship that has become deeper and more heart to heart, and moving from just the physical to the spiritual. The Mingle was very revealing to her, she met people of three genera-tions that have been involved in the covenant. This husband, son-in-law, and grandchild who went to Mozambique, gave her a different perspective that this covenant will not end. There was an agreement among the previous bishops to pray for each other, but this agreement has moved to being involved more fully in the covenant. She believes that our grandchildren will take

this covenant to the next level and beyond.

Bishop Schnase stated that it was difficult to explain how the covenant has affected the congregations in Missouri and Mozambique. He looked at Brenda Cook, with whom he went to Mozambique four years ago, teaching and leading us at the Mingle about Mozambique. This Covenant grabbed her and has taken her to experiences she couldn’t have expected, and she is just one of many.

“This covenant has a way of pulling us out of ourselves, of engaging us in a meaningful direct way, and causing us to reflect in different ways,” he said. “When we experience worship differently, it causes us to look at our own wor-ship differently.”

People and lives are changed because of the covenant. He appreciates the changes that have come, Carol Kreamer led the Mozambique offering; she invited anyone who has been to Mozambique, or is going this year or next year to come to the front row to sing in the offering. Last year at Conference, our member-ship was challenged to provide insecticide treated nets, to help prevent malaria and because of this covenant 15,000 people now are covered with insecticide treated nets. There are still cov-

enants needed, including student covenants.

Kreamer pointed to the windows that look into the ple-nary. They contained drawings of churches of that have received $25,000 in donations and can be completed. When La Croix UMC fully funded the cost of a church building, the participants in that worship doubled because of the building. In Mozambique, they sing this song while the offering is being given:

Naz-mu-ra-nza, Naz-mu-ra-nza, Naz-mu-ra-nza

a-nga-ko-na wa-ku-fa-nha-na na-ye (repeat)

An-nga-kona wa-ku-fa-na-nba Je-su

an-nga-ko-na wa-ku-fa-na-na na-ye (repeat)

Hal-le-lu-jah, hall-le-lu-jah, hal-le-lu-jah (raise hands when saying hallelujah)

a-nga-ko-na wa-ku-fa-na-na an-ye (Repeat)

These words translate to: I wor-ship Christ, there is no one who will be like Jesus.

Kreamer explained that after the offering in Mozambique is completed, it is given to the treasurer, who with a calcula-tor figures out the amount given before the end of the service and announces how much was collect-ed so that they know every week where they stand in their budget.

that blew the money on a party. He still had it, he just hid it away out of fear of losing it.

“I thought the Lord over react-ed,” Cleaver said. “Jesus went too far when he inserted the incendi-ary word ‘wicked’ into the story. He shouldn’t have done that.”

Then he considered how doing nothing is a sin, and Jesus thought doing nothing was ultimately much worse than trying to do

something and failing. He consid-ered others who had done noth-ing, like the people who passed by the crime victim on the road to Samaria, or Pontius Pilot.

“Now, as usual, I must come into agreement with Jesus. Doing nothing is wicked,” Cleaver said.

If you do nothing after knee surgery, rather than doing physi-cal therapy, the knee won’t work, he said. You can spend $70,000

on a new car, and if you park it and never touch it, in a year it won’t start. If I house sits empty, it begins to fall apart. Cleaver urged those present to do some-thing.

“You can’t fall off the floor,” he said. “What wouldn’t you try if you really believed that God would help you? If God will help you, why aren’t you doing some-thing.”

Cleaver said people sometimes would come to his church, and then later tell him they expected him to say something about poli-tics. He tells them if they want to hear him talk about politics, they had better watch C-Span. He sometimes goes to other churches, and ends up hoping that someone says something about Jesus before the benediction.

“Jesus has got to be part of

everything to that goes on in church, if he’s not, it’s not a church, it’s a club,” Cleaver said. “Jesus told us the necessary for-mula for church growth: If I am lifted up, I’ll bring men, women and children to me. You’ve got to lift him up. He doesn’t belong to another denomination. At the turn of the century we were known as shouting Methodists. We were the evangelicals.”

tor’s wife, but also to be a pastor myself.” They both then took that path.

Bishop Hope Morgan Ward was always in church as a young child.

“I was fascinated with God,” she said.

She was on a mission trip in Bolivia at a young age in which they vac-cinated 1,000 people in one day. At the last stop, 100 people showed up when they only had 10 vaccinations left in their nearly empty ice chest, so they only vaccinated the youngest babies. They passed out the four Spanish language Bibles they had remaining, and left feeling embar-rassed and defeated.

They kept records of everyone they vaccinated, and turned it in to the minister of health, noting that they ran out of vaccines. He replied that they couldn’t have run out, because there are not that many people in the area. Because they ran out of vaccine, a new census was conducted. Following the census, a new health initiative for the area was launched by the government.

Later a missionary from the area visited Ward’s church, and reported that the village where they had left the four Bible had started at new church, and it was the fastest growing church in Bolivia.

“When you get a health initia-

tive from an empty ice chest, and the fastest growing church in the country from four Bibles, God suddenly becomes a very power-ful God to me. A God above all Gods,” Ward said.

Bishop Schnase’s career path didn’t always point toward Christian service.

“When I took those interest inventory tests with the school counselors, they suggested I become a librarian or a bookkeeper, something where I would have little contact with people and focus primar-ily on text,” he said. “One recommended I become

an actuary, working with numbers and statistics for an insurance company.”

In high school he thought he might want to be a biologist or a

park ranger. In college he considered becoming a therapist or a school coun-selor. What helped Bishop Schnase hear his call to ministry was the gentle prodding of others.

One memorable time was as a young child, Rev. Cornelius Henderson came to his church, and met with the youth group before the service. Later

the sermon began. “When he preached, his whole

personality filled the place with the Holy Spirit of God,” Bishop Schnase said. “He was preaching on the birth of Jesus, and in the middle of the sermon, he paused and looked right at me and said,

‘Bob, it’s just so beautiful.’ After the sermon, he wrote his name and address on a bulletin, and told me if I wanted to talk about going into the ministry, to contact him.”

Bishop Schnase never did contact him, but still has the bulletin today.

At age 14, Bishop Schnase received a call from his pastor at home, a scary thing in itself for a 14-year-old. His pastor asked him to be in charge of the audio/visual equipment for the church, which was a film projector and a slide projector.

“For the rest of high school, I was at every UMW meeting, every vacation Bible school, every men’s meeting, running the projector,”

he said. At that same time, Bishop

Schnase’s youth director decided he would take the boys from the church out to cut wood and deliv-er it to people who heat and cook with wood. They got the names of needy families from the local wel-fare office. When they made their first delivery, it was to a dirt floor shack with three tin walls and one wall of blankets. Inside there was a sick man in bed, his drunk wife, and a few kids. As they continued to deliver more wood, the other situations were pretty similar.

“I had no idea this world exist-ed five miles from where I lived,” Bishop Schnase said. “It unsettled

me, as if someone was calling my name and saying, ‘What are you going to make of this?’”

In college, Bishop Schnase spent two years working the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday night shift on the suicide prevention hotline. One night a woman called who seemed very close to ending her life. They talked for hours, and she turned a corner and got help.

“When I walked back to my dorm that morning, I was as exhausted as I could be, but I felt more alive than I had ever felt in my life,” he said. “I begin to think about what it would be like to be used by God to make a positive difference in the life of a person.”

This year the Missouri Annual Conference began using some social media tools for information sharing dur-ing Annual Conference Session. There’s a group page on facebook that can be found

by searching facebook for “Missouri Annual Conference Session.” This page contains videos, discussion boards, photos and “wall” comments from Annual Conference Session. As of press time the group has 254

members. Twitter was also used during Conference.

To read the conversation, do a search from Twitter for “#moac09”.

There’s also a wealth of Annual

Conference information on the Missouri Conference Web site, including all three Daily Journals (the reports from each day of Conference session). To read them, go to www.moumethodist.org/ac09.
