why Pro Dive? The Premier Training FacilityPro Dive International is a premier training facility for dive industry professionals, designed to transform a student’s love of scuba diving into a full-fledged career. And its influence lives up to the “international” in its name. The Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) calls the Florida-based school their “first ever Career Development Center in the world” and the “most chosen” center in the U.S. “Pro Dive has occupied a unique position in the diving industry for many years,” says Bob Coleman, PADI’s VP of sales. He calls it the “Gold Standard” in scuba instruction. “When you look at the diving world today,” he says, “many dive center owners and people in the industry went through the Pro Dive program.”

Our commitment to comprehensive training of dive professionals led to a number of accolades:

Outstanding Achievement Award for valuable contributions to PADI Instructor Development

Awarded as PADI’s “first ever Career Development Center in the world” in 1996

In 1998 Pro Dive was recognized as “the most chosen PADI Career Development Center in the U.S.A.”

Our CurriculumWe offer one of the most respected scuba career training programs in the world. The Scuba Career Development programs are a series of high quality courses designed to take both divers – and non-divers – toward their goal of becoming scuba instructors. In fact, Pro Dive is one of the few schools that can take a raw beginner, someone who has never been underwater, all the way through to becoming a qualified, certified instructor. We also offer unique and proprietary training for the resort industry. The Resort Operations Specialist program (ROS®) was written and developed exclusively for Pro Dive by Dr. Alex Brylske, one of the foremost experts on diver education and an award-winning authority on sustainable marine tourism.

Our HistoryWe began with a passion and a vision. As a young man, our founder Greg Mackay had fallen in love with scuba diving and dreamed of sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport with others. When he graduated from college, he became a PADI-certified scuba instructor and began a new life. A year later, he launched his own business: a dive center in the heart of Fort Lauderdale Beach. In 1975, Mackay established Pro Dive, and we soon became one of the first PADI 5-Star Dive Centers in the United States.

In 1984, we established our Scuba Career Development Program, which became one of PADI’s first Instructor Development Centers. We expanded the scope of our Scuba Career Training, developing and copyrighting the industry’s first Resort Operations Specialist (ROS®) program.

Sadly, Mackay and his wife passed away in 2000. However, he left a world-wide community of quality Pro Dive alumni and a company driven by excellence. We are now owned by ATA Holdings, LLC based in Pasadena, California.

Vivian ToroDive Instructor, Stuart Cove’s, Bahamas Pro Dive Graduate 2003

I work for Stuart Cove’s in the Bahamas.

In college, I earned a bachelor’s in Social Sciences then went on to a very successful career appraising real estate for a major bank. Some amazing friends noticed my adventurous side and for my birthday, surprised me with the gift of a Pro Dive Open Water course. When I decided to switch careers, I headed straight for Pro Dive.

Why rescue skills? Sometimes students and even experienced divers panic in the water or an accident occurs. Lives are in jeopardy. Learning rescue skills prepares you to handle these situations in real time.

My rescue stories... I’ve had to stabilize panicked divers, tow peopleto safety and resuscitate non-breathing divers. As part of my job, I manage situations to prevent danger, while monitoring divers’ behavior, their equipment and our environment.

How does it feel to save a life? It’s a real gift to protect people and teach them how to save themselves and help others. I’m grateful that I’ve taken Emergency First Responder/CFC, Oxygen Provider and Rescue Diver. In addition, I completed my IDC training, took DSAT Gas Blender and many other safety-oriented continuing

PADI Rescue DiverWho Should Dive In?Our PADI Rescue Diver course builds on what you learned in PADI Advanced Open Water* and teaches you to prevent and manage problems should they occur. You must have proof of 20 or more logged dives including documentation of deep diving and underwater navigation and Emergency First Aid and CPR training within 24 months. Divers insurance and Emergency First Responder certification are recommended. Career candidates must be at least 18 years old, non-career 15 and Junior Rescue Divers 12.

What You’ll LearnThis is an exciting 4-day, skill-intensive course with classroom presentations, pool training and beach skill development sessions. This work is followed by 6 ocean and lake training and experience dives. You’ll learn how to rescue yourself as well as panicked and unresponsive divers. Familiarize yourself with emergency management techniques and equipment and learn how to recognize and manage stress in other divers.

PADI enriched Air (Nitrox) DiverWho Should Dive In?Anyone who wants increased safety during their dives should consider this course. Nearly 80% of decompression illness cases result from repetitive dives. Enriched air diving reduces this risk, as well as diving fatigue. You must have completed Open Water certification and knowledge reviews to attend. Students must be at least 15 years of age.

What You’ll LearnIn this one-day training class you’ll learn how to safely plan and conduct recreational Enriched Air (Nitrox) dives. The course will cover techniques for getting more dive time by using enriched air nitrox including managing oxygen exposure. You’ll learn how to tell what’s in your scuba tank and how to set your dive computer. Two Nitrox boat dives are included as well as valuable academic topics and exams. These dives may be conducted at night.

How You’ll Benefit More no decompression dive time

Stay down longer and have shorter surface intervals

PADI Enriched Air (Nitrox) Diver certification

Reduced risk of Decompression Sickness (DCS)

Before Class Starts Review PADI Enriched Air Nitrox manual and complete knowledge reviews

What is Nitrox? Nitrox is known by many names: Enhanced Air Nitrox, Oxygen Enriched Air, Nitrox, EANx or Safe Air. It actually refers to any mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. In today’s diving, it refers to mixtures with increased oxygen over that of air’s 21%. Thus the term “enriched” because the mixture is enriched with a higher concentration of oxygen than air. The two most common recreational diving nitrox mixes contain 32% and 36% oxygen. Nitrox mixtures containing 50% to 100% oxygen are common in technical diving.

In scuba, nitrox is advantageous in reducing nitrogen uptake in body tissues thereby extending the possible dive time and potentially reducing decompression illness.

Equipment ConsiderationsMost modern regulators are enriched air compatible, but check to make sure that the one you plan to use is appropriate. Any dive tank (cylinder) containing any blend of gas other than air is required to be clearly marked and cleaned.

First aid and CPR within 24 months and a minimum of 20 logged dives are also required to attend this class. Janet MurphyFounder and Director, Shark SaversCorporate TrainerPADI Master Scuba Diver TrainerPro Dive Graduate 1995

As a former veterinary technician, I’m a staunch advocate of protecting our animal kingdom friends and enjoying our oceans in an environmentally responsible way. In my 9-to-5, I’m Director of Training for a Jamaican

restaurant franchise, but I’m also co-founder and director of Shark Savers (www.sharksavers.org), a NY-based non-profit dedicated to

shark conservation. I’ve spent my entire life in the water as I was raised and educated in Jamaica where my older brother introduced me to scuba diving.

Divemaster – the foundation of my professional success. As a Divemaster, you really move from recreational diver to professional to instructor. You learn to plan and supervise dives, teach classes and conduct reviews and guide students. Pro Dive helped me discover that my true passion is instruction. At Pro Dive, I also took PADI Rescue Diver, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, PADI Medic First Aid Instructor, DAN Oxygen Provider, Nitrox Diver and earned 7 PADI Specialty Instructor ratings. I eventually morphed into becoming a Corporate Trainer within the fast-food restaurant industry. The instructional skills I learned as a Divemaster I still utilize everyday. Now, instead of a wetsuit, I am dressed in business attire!

Pro Dive is A+ – I spent the better part of a year examining various organizations worldwide offering scuba instructor training and selected Pro Dive. Their instructors, boat, classrooms, pool, equipment and retail store are phenomenal. In addition, the location is easily accessible, with affordable, nearby lodging.

Pro Dive lined up job offers before I even finished my training! Pro Dive offers ongoing support and job placement services. Pro Dive’s reputation for developing excellent instructors is widely known. I love simply stating that I attended Pro Dive. It has always been a huge benefit in gaining employment.

Right now, I lead an amazing life as the Captain of the 154-ft yacht, the Charisma, which takes me all around the world teaching wonderful people how to dive and enjoy the waters. I’ve truly seen the world voyaging through the Caribbean, the Great Lakes, Alaska, along the West Coast, the Panama Canal, Indonesia, and most recently the Mediterranean.

Where did I begin? Basically, I was frustrated with university education in South Africa. I dropped out and with parental blessing used the balance of my educational fund to start anew. With a clipping about Pro Dive from Skin Diver magazine in my pocket, I crewed my way to Ft. Lauderdale and the rest is history.

Why did Pro Dive work for me? I was interested in a combination diving and yachting career. Pro Dive respected that and encouraged me. It’s the model PADI school with solid fundamentals. Plus, I had the honor of interning for Pro Dive

between my crewing jobs as a freelance dive instructor over a three-year period. The experience was invaluable.

An uncommon career! My work and career progression are definitely unique. It’s hard to believe that I started out as a deck hand. After training at Pro Dive, I got a job as Head Divemaster on the Pelagian, a 115’ live aboard in Indonesia. Then I worked on a 147-ft motor yacht where the captain was a Divemaster, too. We started offering diving to our guests, which made us more competitive. On the Charisma, my 1st Mate is the resident dive instructor. We just upgraded an entire family. The kids went from Junior to Junior Advanced Open Water and the father from Open to Advanced Open Water. It was a blast and a vacation they’ll never forget.

Am I living the dream? Yes! I’m paid to be a beach bum. Seriously, I’m on the water almost every day and have watched more ocean sunsets than I can count. It’s a great life.

JD Mosley-Matchett, PhDOpen Water Instructor & PADI Course DirectorPro Dive Graduate 1991

I’m an electrical engineer with a JD, MBA and Ph.D. in marketing. I currently own my own company Words & Images, located on the tiny island of Cayman Brac.

I became one of PADI’s first female African-American course directors due to world-class mentor and Pro Dive founder, Greg Mackay. He helped me get the training and contacts I needed to become a Course Director.

Diving expanded my life. I began diving in 1990 to meet interesting people. Then I was hooked. Before diving, I rarely took vacations. After I discovered scuba, I began traveling the world and meeting the most wonderful people.

Pro Dive and diving are truly international. My fellow students at Pro Dive were from all over the world because scuba is worldwide. The more people you meet from other lands, the more opportunities you have to learn about different scuba locations. Plus, the people I trained with became very close friends and opened doors to me that never would have been possible otherwise. The international exposure provided by both Pro Dive and my scuba experience led me to the Cayman Islands, where I have made my home since 2004. I’m living the island life and loving it!

Alex Brylske, PhDProfessor of Oceanography

Senior Editor, Dive Training MagazineDeveloper of the Pro Dive ROS® Curriculum

I have spent my entire adult life in the dive industry, almost 40 years. I’ve been Senior Editor of Diving Training magazine for 17 years and throughout the 80’s served as PADI’s Educational Program Development Manager – designing many of the programs and training materials used by divers all over the world. In addition to a PhD in Marine Science Education with an Oceanography specialty, I’ve earned master’s degreesin instructional systems, design and marine biology and coastal zone management. I also have practical dive industry experience, having worked in the Caribbean for many years.

Identifying the need for Resort Operations training… Assuming the reigns of the career development program at Pro Dive, I promised founder

Greg Mackay that we’d become the best in the business of training instructors. Students and employers were pleased with the classes, but we saw there was a need for more in-depth vocational and technical training. Our divers were trained to be educators, teaching diving, but they wanted the kinds of skills needed to fulfill various roles in resort settings. We spent a year planning and introduced ROS® in 1989.

Pro Dive has evolving resort curriculum. Dynamic and committed to excellence, the ROS® curriculum has undergone significant evolution since its creation. One of the real benefits of Pro Dive is its broad job placement program – the most comprehensive and successful program ever. Pro Dive is in constant contact with employers finding out what need Pro Dive graduates can fill. Then Pro Dive responds by revising the curriculum. In addition, Pro Dive has gone to great lengths to recruit the most qualified instructors in the industry. They’ve been out in the trenches and are able to go above and beyond classroom knowledge.

The ROS® Impact! ROS® Graduates can hit the ground running. There’s an enormous attrition rate in the dive industry because graduates of other schools are not prepared for the practicalities of resort jobs. Pro Dive ROS® Graduates don’t have to take weeks or months finding out the demands of the job. They’re practically experts from day one.

Steven WeitzmanPro Dive Resort Operations Specialist®

Graduate 2007

Wall Street Attorney turned Scuba Instructor. That’s me. I’m now a Scuba Instructor and Boat Captain in the Cayman Islands, but this

was not my original plan. I received an Ivy League Law degree, had a high-paying finance law gig on Wall Street and still something was missing.

Hooked on Diving. I took one dive course. It led to Open Water certification on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Then I met my wife, Andrea, an accountant at a major firm who was certified, too. From then on every vacation was a dive trip. One day, we heard ourselves saying, “Wouldn’t it be great to dive every day?” We had no debt, no mortgage, no kids. What better time than now!

Pro Dive and The ROS® Decision. We spent a year saving and researching to make our dreams come true. We talked with other divers, read dive magazines, searched the Internet and one name kept coming up again and again: Pro Dive. The visit cinched it. In 2006, while still working on Wall Street, we took trips to Pro Dive to complete Advanced Open Water and Master Scuba Diver. The next year, we quit our jobs and moved to Ft. Lauderdale to go pro.

ROS® helped us live the dream everyday! In ROS® training, I learned to perform visual inspections of air cylinders, the right way to fill tanks and change filters on compressors, and how to identify a whole lot of fish. As an instructor, the fish identification has been most helpful. When I’m out with my divers and can’t show them a shark or a turtle, I can point out smaller creatures like mollusks, juvenile puffer fish, a brittle star or 100 other fish. We wake up everyday in paradise. We’re happy and fulfilled. You can’t put a price on that.

The Recreational Dive Planner, An Inquisitive Dentist and Pro Diveby Alex Bryske, PhD

Dr. Ray Rogers, an inquisitive dentist and amateur dive enthusiast, was completing his Divemaster training at Pro Dive in 1983 and was disappointed with USN dive tables. He felt they kept him out of the water too long. Pro Dive directed him to me, program development manager at PADI.

After a long series of communications, Ray immersed himself in dive compression theory, becoming an expert in a short period of time. About a year later, with the help of his son, a computer science student at Florida State, Ray developed an entirely new model which would radically alter recreational diving practice.

Ray’s model became the first dive table developed exclusively for recreational, no stop diving. He convinced PADI

that he had indeed built a better mousetrap. In 1988 PADI launched his new tables as the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP). The RDP is now the most popular dive table in existence and used worldwide. Sadly Ray passed away in 1997, but divers everywhere are grateful to this brilliant and tenacious Pro Dive Graduate.

Amy SlateOwner, Amy Slate’s Amoray Dive ResortKey Largo, Florida

Amoray Dive Resort is a dive resort specializing in scuba charter and instruction. As the owner, I’m responsible for advertising, promotions and hiring. I make the policies and oversee all the resort operations. I have a lot on my plate, so I need skilled, competent professionals on staff to make my jobs easier. That’s why I’ve hired Pro Dive graduates again and again.

30-years in the dive business... I’d known Pro Dive founder Greg Mackay almost as long as I’ve been diving, almost 30 years. I took my first open water scuba course in the late 70’s and loved it. I quickly moved from novice to assistant instructor. In 1978, my

former husband and I opened Atlantis Dive Center in Key Largo. When Pro Dive began its instructor program, I immediately started hiring Pro Dive graduates. In 1992, I sold my interest in Atlantis and opened Amoray Dive Resort in 1993. Over a decade of research and a culmination of years of experience went into the design of Amoray to make it the perfect resort for divers. I couldn’t have done it without my employees who trained at Pro Dive.

Employees are ready to work! From the start, my Pro Dive instructors were a cut above the rest. They had realistic expectations about the scuba industry. Employees who graduated from Pro Dive were very well trained in teaching methods and rescue skills as well as presenting themselves in a very professional manner. Pro Dive alumni always had the necessary specialty rating needed for our area. The Pro Dive staff and ownership were well liked by their students and it showed in my employees’ day-to-day preparation and instruction. The students seem to have a real admiration and appreciation for the experiences they had at Pro Dive as well as the personal relationships and friendships they had formed with their teachers.

I got here by continuing my own education in every field that interested me. I do at least a month of continuing education every year. A good diver is always learning.

In the beginning... Water was and is a part of my life. Raised in Malibu, I started freediving and snorkeling when I was 6. On Sundays, I’d watch Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom followed by the Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau. I signed up for an ocean swim camp at 11. On the last day, we took a boat trip to the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. I watched our camp leader, Rob Lemond scuba dive. It was the coolest thing. He was able to stay down a long time and breathe underwater. I realized, hey I can do that. This was the first time I saw a scuba diver in person, not just someone on TV. So, I went into Malibu Divers and they said I had to be 12. I was miserable for a year waiting to take the PADI Junior Open Water Course.

The best part – Transformation! I love the relationships and connections

that I make with people when I am in the water. The transformation that happens when those two things come together is cool. You can dive the same spot 10 times and every time you dive it is different because you’re changed by the previous dive.

Why endorse Pro Dive? I have been working with Pro Dive graduates for over a decade. In 1997, Pro Dive hosted my crew while I was directing and shooting The Aquanauts for Animal Planet. PADI had put us in touch with Pro Dive and they were definitely some of the best divers in the field. In the years since, I have worked with a series of absolutely 1st class Pro Dive graduates...I strongly believe Pro Dive is a great place to learn.

One word to describe a dive pro. Versatile. I did not limit my exploration to just diving courses from the dive industry. I was lucky to have a marine biology degree from Long Beach State, but I realized that diving and wilderness medicine, psychology, the business of diving, boat handling, archaeology, sociology... would fill in the gaps.

Diving has changed my life. I’ve shot and directed dive related television, written and talked on many dive topics, helped develop DSAT Tec Deep and Trimix programs, explored new cave systems, historical wrecks, worked with marine biologists to conduct research and see things that no one else will ever see. I’ve trained lots of divers hopefully providing that transformational moment for them as well.

Prospective Student FAQ’sYou Asked. We Answered.

1. Can I get financial assistance? There are some programs available. Please contact us for more information. Served in the armed forces? If so, PADI has obtained approval from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for qualified veterans, active military personnel and some dependents to be reimbursed the Instructor Examination fee. Contact PADI or VA Licensing and Certification Tests Benefit program for specific details. The United Kingdom offers financial assistance as part of its Military Resettlement program. You may secure loans through the Pro Dive Loan Program.

2. Do you provide student accommodations? We’ve created relationships with executive suite hotels/motels to provide our students with reduced rate housing. We also provide assistance to help you set up roommates thereby reducing your housing expense.

3. Can you provide a quiet place to study? We sure can. Everyday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, we’ve set aside a multi-purpose classroom so our students can have their very own study hall.

4. Where can I store my equipment? All students can store their equipment with us for free. We provide locked and secure equipment storage.

5. Will I need my own equipment? Yes, you will. You can bring the equipment you own already or purchase your equipment from us.

A Long Lasting RelationshipOne of the reasons we’ve been so successful is that we provide our students and alums with the tools and support they need to build long-lasting professional careers.

A Pros Library – We’ve designated a special section of the Pro Dive Shop just for you and your continuous educational development. Our Pros Library includes all of the student supplies, instructor training manuals and specialty diving books you need to run your business. 6. Is a wetsuit required? Wetsuits are strongly recommended. Stay warm. You could be in the pool for up to 3-hours at a time. Average ocean temperatures are 72-76° F (22-24° C) in winter months and 76-82° F (24-28° C) in the summer months.

7. Do I need to bring a car? Is public transportation available? The choice to bring a car is a personal one. Pro Dive has parking available for students. However, Ft. Lauderdale is a large, metropolitan city and there are a number of buses that provide daily service. Most hotels are within easy walking or bicycling distance. Bicycles and scooters can be rented from outside vendors.

8. What’s the skinny on internships? Can you get one for me? We have a formalized internship for the ROS® Program. Other career students have interned for us on a case by case basis. Obviously there is not enough space for every student to work at Pro Dive. Universities and dive operations throughout the world provide

internships, and we provide our career students with one-on-one career placement support.

9. How will you help me find a job when I graduate?

1. We ask you to fill out a DREAM SHEET, which conveys your ideal career situation.

2. The most exciting part is the creation of your unique VIDEO RESUME. Your personal video will include a 5-minute introduction followed by an underwater demonstration of 5 skills, surface pool rescue scenario and a 10-minute classroom presentation. You’re bound to communicate your unique teaching style and attract the job you want. You can post your video and view other videos on Pro Dive’s You Tube page (www.youtube.com/user/prodiveusa).

3. Then, we prepare your PAPER RESUME. We use your data to distribute your resume to compatible dive operations, help you navigate job board listings and hone your interview skills.

Pro Dive Pros Newsletter – Our bi-annual e-newsletter will let you know what’s happening at Pro Dive and within the diving industry. This is your publication. Alums will have the opportunity to advertise their services, post positions and submit editorials for publication consideration.

A Pros Discount – Graduates of our career program receive special pricing on equipment and merchandise.
