Robbins (2019)

My Teaching Philosophy My conceptualization of teaching and learning. Like most, I’ve been in academics a majority of my life. I often reflect back on my time as a student, replaying in my mind the feeling and enjoyment I experienced going to class - to a teacher I had really enjoyed learning from, and to whom seemed to have a way of connecting: challenging, inspiring, motivating me to push the boundaries of excellence; bringing out my best. When the right teacher was in the classroom learning just seemed to be so much easier.

I also reflect on those who were not as effective, and now as a teacher, find myself learning to become just like those I held in such high regard; continually finding ways to effectively pass on course material, and industry knowledge, to my own students. Through reflection of the past and the present, I’m ultimately reminded of the enormous potential value that is gained from both the student and teacher, including the excellence that is shared by the student. How I teach.

It’s been important to me as a teacher to foster an academic setting where students are active participants of their learning. An environment where students are encouraged to communicate without ridicule, or fear of embarrassment from their peers, or from me. The classroom environment is a laboratory where students can freely experiment with their thoughts and ideas. My creative feedback to students during this setting fuels this engagement, and serves as a check for student progress, and assessment. As a teacher the setting of the academic stage for learning is paramount in enabling success.

Although accomplishment and academic success are earned by successfully demonstrating

comprehension of the subject, this is typically a result that is proportional to a student’s level of motivation and desire to learn. As a teacher I find it important to fuel that motivation and desire in the right way – challenging the student and structuring grading in a strategic way. The foundation for this starts by establishing a relationship with each student; starting with learning their name, understanding their expectations, and their goals – both academic and career goals.

A rationale of why I teach. Passing on industry grade knowledge to students, especially in the growing field of Information Technology and Cybersecurity, that leads them to better themselves professionally, and enabling them to meaningfully contribute to our field is a strong passion of mine. I have come to see the results and benefits from integrating the necessary rigor behind a curriculum, allowing students to gain confidence in their abilities, and achieve a sense of personal accomplishment. This rigor, combined with my teaching approach, have directly contributed in landing students with great jobs. Not a day goes by where I don’t either run into, or am contacted, and personally reminded, by one of my students thanking me for everything I’ve done and the enjoyment they experienced from my classes. I teach because our students matter every day and that means everything to me.

6. Please comment on the activities or resources that could be added to this course to improve your learning. There was more than enough activities and resources in this course. The Pearson software was glitchy with strange problems. I also had to print out the chapters to avoid toggling between twoscreens. No improvements all activities were helpful and great.n/anoneNothing MuchI am a fan of online learning as it allows me to fit school around my life effectively. 17. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods. In the beginning of the course it was unclear to me which "projects" in the textbook were required to turn in and which oneswere not. After the second week I got a good grasp on what was expected.I received no responses to my emails, even when I had an emergency. No improvements teaching styles and methods were great.n/anoneNothing muchThis course I consider a "big boy" class where accepting the fact that the teacher will not be at you beckon call totwiddle and fuss on your every thought or question. The positive in this is that you rely on your own strengths andconfidence to work out questions like a "big boy" should do. I am grateful for it because the my success is evenmore rewarding knowing I was a big boy girl and made it through.

18. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....GreatThe instructor was extremely helpful and always provided a timely response whenever I had a question.I would not take another courseThe instructor for this class was great. Helped with any problems, given it was an online course sometimes the programwould not work correctly however once the issue was brought up, he was great about working with you so your grade wasnot affected. I appreciate the assignment due reminders from the instructor it really helped keep me on track to complete allmy assignments.Great instructor! Weekly reminders and always open for help if needed. Clear and concise in directions for the course. Hope totake you again in the future!Great teacher, predictable calendar and due dates which I really appreciated.A, because he replies to emails very quickly when needed helpThe teacher did what he was supposed to do. He did not fuss about us. He helped when he needed but hisabsence was what I'd like to think of as "intentional" so to teach us self reliance and confidence. I knew he wasthere somewhere if I needed him, but that extra minute caused me to think again and figure it out myself, which Idid.

5. Please comment on the activities or resources that could be added to this course to improve your learning.I think we need to do more studyingon some of the questions in class, though the textbook gives out allthe answers too.Nothing really needs to be added.Lectures were sufficient and the textbooksfor the course were good as well.I strongly believe that there should be graded work throughout the semester. I understand that Professor Robbins is an industryprofessional, and therefore has a busy schedule - but the current class format was unsatisfactory in terms of continuedengagement throughout the semester. Professor Robbins is a pleasure to be in class with - but 2 graded assignments in 15weeks didn't really create what I would consider to be a progressive environment for learning. The course provides many practice questions that prepare the student for the mindset needed to pass the CISSP certification. Ibelieve that an interactive version of these questions could be a handy tool to help students prepare more efficiently.updated presentations to match the book

16. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.Maybe if the questions selectedwere worth points...it's a risk but bydoing well on the assignments canmake your prepared for the CISSPand give you some cushion to passthe class. No suggestions here. Professor Robbinsis an expert in his field, yet he is able tobring it home and actually teach us whathe knows at our levels. I have had otherProfessors who were "experts in theirfield" but sucked at actually getting thestudents to learn at their levels, making ithard for any of us to really understand thecontent. Professor Robbins did it right;giving us past experiences, going intodetail, and teaches us in a way that westudents can truly understand.Update assignments, slides, textbookrequirement to be up to date with theexam. I would have been morecomfortable taking the CISSP if I waslearning from up to date material.

There should be more gradedassignments so the final isn't worthsuch a big portion of the grade.

The card game for extra credit was fun,but it seemed unfair as how manycards/credit received relied a lot onrandom chance.Course could use an overhaul.

Updated powerpoints and homework assignments. It would also be nice to get some better feedback on the homework or at leastmake it graded. CISSP includes a lot of material - but the current format creates an environment that results in students crammingat the end of the semester because they weren't held accountable throughout. Ultimately, it's the responsibility of the student tofind the motivation to study - but the current format of the class isn't what I expected of a 400 level class. Professor Robbins has alot to offer - but is quite capable of creating a more dynamic learning environment.it's fine

17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....Works well with students, encourages you to do theassignments for the test. ExtraCredit is more of gambling and Iprefer a bit more consistentassignments to get Extra Credit, instead of answering questions.10/10Professor Robbins was great. Reallyupbeat and fun to listen to. He is also veryexpressive and real. Great professoroverall.A very positive, knowledgable man.Professor Robbins articulated concepts clearly and with a depth that students could not have gotten merely from a book. His useof examples from his experiences painted a clearer picture of the concepts than definitions could have on their own. He is a greatpresenter.pretty good

Having a realnetwork security professional, that is a certified as a CISSP was very beneficial.Professor Robbins was helpful and gave good insight as what to expect for the CISSPexam as well as what to expect if employed. 6. Please comment on the activities or resources that could be added to this course to improve your learning.I wished there was someone in the industry thatspoke about their journey and experiences as aCISSPWhen the work I do gets marked wrong, I tend to go through it and see why I got the answer wrong. I feel like grading the workwould help a great deal. And less questions more frequently would allow for better retention. The instructor has mentioned the thought of incorporating team building activities: class presentations.More assignments that gave more points would be helpful - instead of all the pointscoming from the midterm and final exams.

Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.I wish there was more feedback for the homeworkassignments or at least a better way to study thequestionsIf a lot of material needs to be covered, consider handing out homework in smaller portions more frequently. The instructor is great just as he is.counting attendance would be helpful to my grade. Just like a job - attending work ismandatory - attending class is the same.
