You have joined an elite group of individuals on a journey to become world-class servant-leaders. This journey begins and ends with three questions every leader must answer to truly be great:

The Multicultural Leadership Program (MCLP) is an intense professional develop-ment leadership program that focuses on developing world-class leaders from diverse backgrounds for our community.

MCLP prepares participants for increased service and leadership in public-private, educational, political, and no-profit sectors within McLean County.

The program provides a structure for learn-ing and practicing leadership skills that strengthen and support participants, as they move forward to address vital community needs and promote inter-community unity.

Participant Agreement

Congratulations on being selected to the Multicultural Leadership Program (MCLP) forClass of 2013. You are one of the elite individuals chosen to be a part of this experience. MCLPinvests major time and resources into providing the best leadership learning experience for itsparticipants. We expect participants to fully commit their time to the program and the experiences itprovides to help participants accelerate their leadership learning. Please review the guidelines in thisparticipant agreement. If you accept these terms, please return a signed copy of the programparticipant agreement to the program director or a qualified board member.

MCLP Absentee Guidelines

Each participant is required to be actively engaged in all parts of the MCLP experience. Thisincludes all learning events, the community development project, the mentor/mentee meetingsand the participant’s personal and professional journey toward excellence in servant leadership.

1. If a participant appears continuously absent, such that they are not physically present or actively engaged, a review will be initiated to assess the circumstances of the absences and determine if a participant should be permitted to continue the MCLP program.

2. Participants are expected to attend all sessions in each Saturday and Thursday learning event throughout the program. If an absence should occur, the following guidelines will be followed:

3. Participants should inform the class facilitator(s) of all absences in a timely manner. Facilitator(s) and Par-ticipant will decide upon the subject of the homework assignment and the homework deadline. Any session missed will require an assignment. Failure to complete assignment(s) may result in the inability to graduate from the MCLP program.

4. Participants missing more sessions than the equivalent of one (1) Saturday’s learning event or two (2) Thurs-day’s learning events will be required to attend all missed sessions with the next graduating class. Upon completion of the missed sessions, the participant will then receive his/her certificate. The participant can still attend graduation activities with his/her current class. However, the certificate will be withheld until-completion of the makeup sessions.

5. In the event of excessive absences, the participant may be suspended from the program and must repeat all missed activities or learning events or the program in its entirety the following year in order to receive his/her certificate. This decision will consider factors such as: participation level and the reasons for absences. The participant may not be able to attend graduation activities with his/her current class.

MCLP Commitment

As a participant of the Multicultural Leadership Program (MCLP), I fully support the MCLPmission and vision. I understand it is my responsibility to be actively engaged in all aspects of theprogram. I am committed to my own personal and professional development as a servant-leaderand I will use the skills and knowledge I acquire to add value to my home, work and community life.I am also committed to investing my time and effort in this program. Specifically,

1. I understand participants are expected to attend 100% of classroom instruction and to participate fully in the activities each day. I will attend each bi-weekly learning event prepared and on time for the duration of the program. If I must miss a session or a whole day’s learning event due to unforeseen circumstances, I will abide by the MCLP absentee guidelines.

2. I understand, in addition to classroom instruction and activities, I am required to read course materials on my own time and will be prepared for discussions and writing exercises as assigned.

3. I am committed to meeting/speaking with my mentor on a bi-weekly basis for the duration of the program to discuss my goals, progress, and any advice/assistance the mentor might share.

4. I am committed to meeting with my community development project team on my own time and to contrib-uting to the success of the project.

5. I have read and agree to the MCLP absentee guidelines which apply to the whole program.6. In signing this document, I understand the time commitment required as a participant in this program and I

am willing and able to make this commitment.

Program Description:The Multicultural Leadership Program (MCLP) is an intense professional development leadership program that focuses on developing emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds in our community. MCLP prepares partici-pants for increased service and leadership in public-private, educational, political, and non-profit sectors within our community. Program Objectives:At the completion of this program, you will be able to:1. Develop a personal leadership philosophy and learn the leadership skills needed to help others achieve their

dreams for the community.2. Understand a framework for resolving ethical questions and the challenges leaders face when working to

deliver results within ethical and truthful policies.3. Understand emotional intelligence and how to regulate your own emotional states by making effective

choices.4. Learn guidelines for receiving and giving feedback effectively, as a leader or team member.5. Practice techniques for setting priorities, assessing progress and identifying qualities and habits of successful

managers and leaders.6. Develop a change management plan by identifying risks and understanding how leaders work with others to

identify creative solutions to problems or barriers.7. Understand the benefits and characteristics of effective teams. Learn to assess team leader skills and develop

guidelines for maximizing team meetings.

Program Syllabus

Program Components & Required Participation:1. Event Attendance, Participation, and Discussion: A. Events: Each event involves extensive participation on your part. Each participant is expected to complete the preparation assignment, attend each event on-time and participate frequently during event sessions and debriefings. See Participant Agreement Form for specific details. B. Community Projects: Each participant will be assigned to a community group project. Specific details will be addressed early in this program; however, in general you will be expected to contribute to your group project by attending and participating in all meetings (times determined by your group) and preparing project materials for your mid-term and final presentations (handouts, charts, and/or visual materials). C. Mentorship: Each participant will be assigned a mentor. The mentors are influential leaders in McLean County. After specific details of this program are presented to the class, you will be expected to meet with your mentor at least once a month. D. Board Experience: Attend board meetings of a selected community organization. Document what you learned and the issues you found intriguing.

2. Written Work: Guidelines are provided in manual. A. You have been assigned a support partner or buddy (see Support Partner List for your partner’s name and assignment). Both you and your partner are assigned an event for which you will be writing thank you notes to all the speakers and event chair. B. Journal assignments will occur throughout the course of the program. C. Individual Development Plan – This plan is intended as a communication tool to articulate your goals and plans so your mentor can provide better guidance to help you succeed. D. Community Project Proposal – This proposal will be based on information gathered by your team from the project sponsor, liaison, and advisor. E. Community Project Mid-term Report – This report is a summary of your project and its status. F. Community Project Executive Report – This paper will be a summary of your project, including sections covering the goals, conclusions, recommendations and the methodology.

3. Make-up Assignments: A. Participants are expected to attend 100% of classroom instruction and to participate fully in the activities each day. If you must miss an event due to unforeseen circumstances you are required to complete a make-up assignment prior to the next event. B. If absent from an event you must inform the program director of your absence no later than 24 hours after the event. C. The program director will send make-up assignments via email the next business day after the missed event.

Event Goals:1. Mastery: Each event is comprised of sessions which assist you in mastering a leadership topic.2. Method: In addition to the content of the course, these events are to make you think about some

aspects of method (how leadership is expressed by you and those around you).3. Community: Creating a community of 25 participants who come together in honesty and openness

requires time. In this set of 16 events, the class will learn how to talk, listen, express disagreement, defend one’s position, change one’s mind, clarify a question or a point of confusion, and do all this in a safe learning environment.

How to Get More from Each Event:1. Before attending each event, read preparation assignments (found at the top of each agenda).2. For each event, write a few questions to spark discussion using the following categories as guides.

Some questions you may come up with before the event – some you will come up with during the different sessions of the event.

• Close-ended factual question: Probing query that will help everyone in class come to an agreement about the material. This question usually has a correct answer and deals with a significant matter, such as asking for supporting evidence.

• Open-ended factual question: Insightful query that will require proof or logic and spur group discussion to discover or explore the answer to that question, such as identifying the particular methodology used by the speaker(s).

• Analytical question: Invites comparison/contrast with other specific topics we have covered; as well as critical judgment of the arguments, evidence and choice of methodology.

• Personal perspective question: Explores reflections on the topic. Reflections may include participant’s interest-level as well as what was surprising, relevant, controversial, persuasive, etc.

Session Description The Friday Night at the ER team-learning game is a simulation tool for gaining powerful insight in an engaging group experience. The game simulates the challenge of managing a hospital during a typical 24-hour period. Players perform distinct functions, but they come to realize that they also depend on each other.

Learning Outcomes By the end of this session, participants should:1. Be able to consider the effects of their decisions on the larger system2. Be able to collaborate with an openness to redesign3. Be able to produce sound data on which to base decisions.

Session Description This session will provide an overview of the Myers Briggs Personality Inventory and your Myers Briggs results.

Learning Outcomes By the end of this session, participants should:1. Understand their personality type through the MBTI and why this information is important to personal and

professional success2. Understand their personality strengths and how to use them to improve relationships.3. Know how to recognize communication patterns in others and how to modify their own communication to

be more effective at work and home. 4. Be able to build understanding, harmony, and trust among people who see the world differently.

Session Description This highly interactive session focuses on effective presentation skills, including prepara-tion, structure, delivery, strategy, use of visual aids, and handling question and answers.

Be able to analyze an audience in a presentation and customize the presentation delivery.4. What are your talents? Often times this question is difficult because talents, by definition, are things that we naturally do well. They can be hard to recognize and appreciate because we seldom break a sweat when we’re tapping our talents! Instead, we feel motivated, inspired and energized.

Greenfield Jr. who wrote the article, Toward a Theory of School Administration: The Centrality of Leadership, “three conditions distinguish the work of school administrators from that of their colleagues in nonschool contexts: the uniquely moral character of schools; a highly educated, autonomous, and permanent workforce; and regular and unpredictable threats to organizational stability. The resultant demand environment requires school administrators to rely more extensively on leadership than routine administration to influence teachers and to negotiate the complex interplay among the five situational impera-tives of school administration: moral, instructional, political, managerial, and social/interpersonal role demands.”

The presidents of Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan, Heartland Community College and Lincoln Col-lege along with the superintendants of Unit 5 and District 87 schools will discuss the challenges of working in the field of education as well as their leadership journeys.

Session Description: Class divides into five teams. Each team will plan a political campaign for a particular office, ranging from town council member to mayor to a county board member. Each team will be assigned a panelist who will guide their development of a political strategy, plan and presentation. At the end there will be a secret ballot to select the best team based on pre-defined rubrics.

Session Description: During this session, you will:1. Narrow down top leadership priorities at home, in the community, & at work2. Identify the people who will help you succeed3. Use the Transfer-of-Learning Scaffold to transform what you’ve learned into organized action. i.e.

communicating with stakeholders who support you about actions they will/can take and what countermeasures will overcome possible barriers

4. Consider Kirkpatrick’s Levels of Impact to set targets for what you will accomplish at home, in the community, and at work, when applying what you learned in MCLP.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this session participants should:1. Begin to build a strategy for integrating MCLP learnings into your life2. Identify specific, focused individual and class-wide opportunities for MCLP application at home, in the commu-

nity, and at work3. Rely upon MCLP peers, mentors, and other supporters to think more about what your application of MCLP

will look like, who needs to support that application, and how to overcome barriers to successful application4. Select one application opportunity most relevant to you, and develop a plan for execution using the Transfer-of-
