Of course all at the MPNFL office joined the rest of Australia to watch and support this wonderful event, and more than once it was mentioned how lucky we are, as local football and netball supporters, to be regularly and passionately involved in sport. While obviously we are not talking about sport on the world stage in this case, there is no less enthusiasm shown by our club and league members and followers as they watch and enjoy the efforts of their players on the field or court each weekend. The background stories that are told during the Olympics, particularly those focusing on the underdogs or giant killers, enhance the event and the reputation of the person or team involved for ever. HistoriansGenerations within the MPNFLFamilies are the life blood of every football club; each club would have one story or more of families being involved year in year out some since formation. But it is a rare thing that clubs would have a continuous lineage of a direct family name covering 4 generations to have played football in MPNFL.Today we look at a few known examples of 4 genera-tion family names within MPNFL football. The older clubs are more likely to have such a lineage of family names.

SlocombeOn the Westernport side of the bay the name slocombe is extremely well known es-pecially in the Hastings and Tyabb areas.

george slocombe senior was a player with Hastings, Tyabb, Moorooduc and Somerville from 1908 to 1930 playing 161 games and a member of the Hastings Premiership team in 1912 and 1913 then Tyabb 1921 and 1922 as coach. George was one of the Champions of the Peninsula pre the 1st World War and played till he was well in his

forties. He had George Junior and Robert play football.

robert slocombe played 89 games at Tyabb 1930 – 1936 missing out on the 1932 Premiership after a vehi-cle accident going to one of the finals matches. Robert or Bob as he was known had 7 sons play football Edgar at Tyabb, Allan at Hastings and Mornington, Jeff at Hastings and Tyabb, Ron, Laurie and Barry at Hastings.

allan slocombe played 35 games at Hastings and 4 with Mornington.

Jeff slocombe played 67 games with Hastings seniors and three times picked up the MPFL best and fairest award in the reserves 1969, 1972 and 1974. Jeff also picked up the re-serve NFL goal kicking in his season with Tyabb 1977. The fourth line of direct family continued with paul slocombe son of Jeff playing at Hastings 43 games. And current Dromana player Ryan Slocombe son of Allan who notched up 88 games at Hastings, 19 games at Tyabb, 31 games at Dromana at end of 2011.

HodginsContinuing with the Western-port theme we look at the hodgins family name, going back to alan hodgins who played 120 games at Tyabb including the 1921 and 1922 Premierships he also played 2 games at Hastings. When Tyabb Hastings merged in the late 1930’s Alan became a delegate to the MPFL be-coming a League Life Mem-ber in the 1950’s. Alan’s son Kevin (Barney) hodgins played 100 games with Hastings being a member of the 1946, 1947 and 1948 Premiership teams, he then moved to Somerville for 1949 notching up another flag that year before playing at Tyabb in the early 1950’s.

HistoriansKevin’s son greg hodgins became a long serving Hastings player notching up 210 games and Premier-ships in 1972, 1975 and 1977. Before being an active member of the Somerville club.Greg’s son Jarrod hodgins has played 49 games with Somerville.

FalckDown at Sorrento the Falck family name is currently having their 4th generation name play football. les Falck in 1939 played one season 12 games. His son michael Falck joined Sorrento in 1959 and over a 12 year period notched up 104 games.

Mick’s son adam Falck played 7 senior games between 1984 and 1990.Son of Adam is current player Jack Falck a member of the 2010 and 2011 Sorrento Premiership team. Jack has 48 senior games to his credit. There may be more 4 generation families throughout the MPNFL; than the 3 above and the League Histori-ans would be more than interested if others names are brought to their attention.

Winding Down Football clubs in August usually fall into three distinct camps: those for whom finals are a certainty, a possibility, or an impossibility. Round 1, 2012 doesn’t actually seem that far back, and it won’t be long before Round 1, 2013 is upon us. When Brad Green recently announced his retirement, he made the comment that, for the last 6 years, he has gone into a pre-season thinking of playing finals, and for those six years, he has been disappointed. With the recent completion of the London Olympics, plenty of athletes will be left pondering, as Brad Green did, on the meaning of success. For local footy clubs, once their final siren sounds, it is a time to reflect on the year, and whether it could be classed as a “success”. How we measure success varies greatly, depending on our own circumstances. On watching the aftermath of the women’s 100m hurdles, and the reaction of the placegetters, you could have been forgiven for thinking the silver and bronze medallists had won gold, such was their obvious elation – in contrast, Sally Pearson looked relieved, if anything, and far more subdued than 4 years ago when she won silver. In London, James Magnussen sounded about ready to throw his silver medals into the pool, while Steve Solomon was rapt just to have made an Olympic 400m final by running a personal best, despite not figuring in the medals.Football is littered with similar stories but, as a team game, team success is regarded as the ultimate – just

look at the number of Brownlow medallists who would gladly trade the game’s highest individual honour for a premiership. Unfortunately, as we all know, less than 10% of our clubs can win a premiership each year – does that mean the other 90% have failed? Unlikely. There are two aspects to a club’s success – on- and off-field. If a club has good player numbers, solid members, sponsors and finances, most would regard it as a success. If they are competitive on-field, even without winning any cups in 2012, which can also be seen as successful, and you may be in with a show next year. The attitudes of Brad Green and Steve Solomon provide food for thought – they probably suspected, deep down, that they would be unlikely to take out the ultimate in their respective fields, but they got the best out of themselves while trying. As long as footy clubs strive to better their own “personal bests”, then filling the space in the trophy cabinet won’t be too far away.Good luck to all teams this weekend.Ben o’BrienEastern Area Manager

Peninsula PreviewEagles Face ChallengeYOU’VE got to go all the way back to the 1980s to find the last time Edithvale-Aspendale finished on the bottom of the ladder. The proud club from Regent Park own more silverware than wooden spoons. But, with two rounds remaining, Edi-Asp are anchored to the bottom. It’s been a tough season, with only three wins, but coach Troy Shannon – who was recently reappointed for 2013 - says the Eagles are in a healthy state and can dodge the spoon.“We’ve got to win another game. Our percentage is better than Langwarrin and Pines,” he said.“We’ve got Seaford and Bonbeach. We’ve got to win one more and we’ll get off the bottom and that’s what we are trying to achieve in the next fortnight.“We can (do it). We’ve actually been playing pretty good.”Edi-Asp pushed Frankston YCW last week, getting within 16 points of the champs in the last quarter, before being swamped. The exciting thing for the Eagles is the emergence of youngsters like Mark Mullins and Tommy Turner.Senior men Steve Mannix, Nick Connellan, Brad Tagg and Troy Ogier look to be finishing the season strongly.Bonbeach continue to march towards the finals. Going well, the Sharks should be able to hit September with their confidence high.MORNINGTON and LANGWARRIN have struggled badly in the latter part of the season.Like a couple of tired boxers at the end of a 12-round bout, they go toe-to-toe today.Mornington has lost five of its past six games and last week was trounced by 183 points by Karingal.Langwarrin has lost seven of its past eight games and last week copped a 101-point hiding from Mt Eliza.Of course, injuries haven’t helped either side.An out-of-form CHELSEA tumbled out of the top five last week for the first time this season.

A season of high promise has turned sour for the Seagulls, who today face a red-hot KARINGAL. It’s pretty simple for Jason Chapple’s side. They must win.The Seagulls have battled hard but must feel like they are trying to hold back a tide with a paddle in recent weeks.Today’s difficult task is made even tougher because Karingal will be hell-bent on winning for their favourite son, captain Luke Van Raay, who plays his 200th game. LVR has been a loyal, outstanding player for the Bulls – and he would dearly love to lead Karingal to the ultimate.Karingal has won five in a row and last week kicked a season-high 33 goals. Peninsula Previewa club-record equalling 12 majors last week and has booted 18 in his last two outings. The Bulls, in fact, have plenty of scoring power, with the likes of Dale Alanis, David Hirst, Michael Burke and Dan Noble.PINES are playing much better footy late in the season but face a daunting final two weeks. The Pythons play MT ELIZA today, and Karingal next week. The positives for Pines have been the form of Jamie Messina, Brendan Neville, Beau Hendry, Guy Hendry (who has kicked 33 goals) and Shaun Stewart.Mt Eliza has kicked 43 goals in the past two games and the Redlegs’ forward line has rarely looked stronger, with Sam Lloyd, Scott Lockwood and Michael Lourey combining beautifully. And with Ben Lean, Dan Gormley and Kyle Docherty also running hot, Mt Eliza looks like being hard to beat in the finals. At Jubilee Park, FRANKSTON YCW will look to make it eight successive wins when it hosts SEAFORD.The Stonecats unleashed a devastating goal-blitz late in the game last week, booting seven goals in 10 minutes to sink Edi-Asp.Big Ash Eames is playing inspired footy while Blake McCormack and Paul Wintle have been in dashing form also.Seaford has grabbed fifth spot and intends to stay there. The Tigers have had a rollercoaster season. They did push the Stonecats earlier in the year and, with a sniff of finals in their nostrils, they might be ready to take the next step.

Kangaroos on the Hop in the Reserves…LANGWARRIN scored one of its best wins of the season last week, tossing Mt Eliza by a point to celebrate Matty Poore’s 200th. If Langy can maintain such spirit, they’ll not only beat MORNINGTON today but make an impact in the finals. On a seven-game tear, FRANKSTON YCW has barged its way into the five – but now the hard work begins.

The Stonecats face highly-ranked SEAFORD and Mt Eliza in the last two games and will need to win at least one of them.EDI-ASP is out to win back their place in the top five when it faces BONBEACH.PINES scored a rousing one-point win last week with Dale Tedge, Jake Berry and Jason Mumford running rampant. The Pythons tackle flag hope MT ELIZA today.Chelsea will struggle against flag favourites KARINGAL, on a five-game streak.

Stonecats Ready to Fire in the Under 18s…Legitimate flag contenders FRANKSTON YCW and SEAFORD clash in the match of the round. The Stonecats ran rampant last week with Kieran Albanese and Corey Micari in the goals and Stephen Worton impressive.Michael Turville showed what he is capable last week as BONBEACH scored a rousing win and today the Sharks will be hard to beat against EDI-ASP.The classy MT ELIZA will roll on when it meets PINES.LANGWARRIN travels to MORNINGTON, coming off the bye and chasing a top-three spot.

Today we welcome The Frankston Bombers (Colts) and Langwarrin Football Clubs to Alexandra Park and look forward to 4 competitive games of Country Footy.Last week we travelled to visit our friends at Karingal and the Colts had a great 46 point win making finals a strong possibility. This is their last game for the home and away season as they have the bye last round. The best on the day was Shane Connell, Brandon Bolton and Jordan Forrest. The under 18’s had a bye and should come back refreshed and ready to play. The Reserves played competitive footy till the 3rd quarter and went down by 62 points and a special thank you to the under 18 boys who played on the day. Best for the Doggies were Kris McCarthy, Smithy and young Matty Brock. The seniors have had better days in the office and like the other 4 games in our comp we copped a good thrashing. Our league had 5 exciting games last week where the winning margins were 183, 101, 72, 58 points and one close game of 34 points. Karingal are very good football team with local talent and should do very well come finals. Thank you to all our Sponsors, donators and buyers at our Comedy Auction night which was a very funny and successful night. Again those that didn’t attend missed a good night. Last Saturday’s highlight clearly was watching Pozza notch up his 200th. ‘The vulture’ has been a fantastic servant of the club for well over a decade and is always sure to be sharking around the goals ensuring the suc-cess of our reserves side for such a long period of time. Congratulations on the milestone mate and becoming our newest LFC Life Member. The reserves definitely came out to play for him and worked really hard to hold on by at point against good opposition. Pozza, Reidy and Wenny were amongst the best. Disappointing to see the Pidge go down with a knee - hopefully he can get back for another finals campaign. Our unders struggled throughout against the top side with Hanger, Matt Napier and Harkness battling hard. The scoreboard in the senior game became very simi-lar and despite good efforts from Riley, Hoges, Urbs and McGill the boys never looked in it. The last two rounds are super important for the club to finish the season on a couple of positives and its starts today with Mornington.A fantastic night was had by all at the $5k draw i-tunes shuffle night last weekend. Well done to Josh Biggs on taking out the big prize. Tonight is sure to be another fun one with the Op Shop formal - if anyone is struggling for something to wear feel free to pop around to Booz Hayes’ joint as his cupboards are packed with suitable attire! Also thanks to all those who turned up for the first week at the junior finals to help on the BBQ and in the canteen - this is never an easy task on a sunday.Social Notes - OP SHOP FORMAL TONIGHT! VOTE COUNT 25th AUGUST. PRESENTATION NIGHT 19th OCTOBER.A big thank you to all our sponsors including our majors of Berettas, Harcourts, Graham Quarries and RAMS.go langy!

WIN.Round 16 2012 - donnellan inj, damon inj, morland gone, gcarpenter inj, anderson gone, connelly gone, odell 2’s. LOSS.15 goal turnaround! Your thoughts?v Seaford. The kids narrowly lost. Poor goalkicking cost-ly. Ponts, Harps, Doda, JMill and Dicko shone. Building nicely toward the finals - might be time to get on board people. The 2’s kept coming all day but fell short in the end. Hodgey, Jodda, Jnr Dyer, Clarky and Shelts got amongst it. Sivijs and Schobs got 4 majors each. A much improved effort. Seniors failed again. Considering the stakes, it was a very poor performance. Sammy, Gents, Finny, Nighta, Wiz and Slick flew the flag!Today we welcome CFC Past Players and Life Members. Enjoy a look into the future. 18’s have a bye but many could be playing seniors today. Ask someone in the know to point out our future stars - clark, ponton, kane, graham, dodson, miller and dickenson could all be on show today. Tonight we welcome back Lewy Live - Support the boy!Round 18 post Langwarrin - DISCO FEVER to finish the year. Requests taken.THANKS to all our sponsors - see you again in 2013. THANKS to all the CFC staff - so many to mention - we appreciate your support, effort, loyalty and commitment. To all the boys recovering from injuries. Do it right! Rest, Rehab and then Return bigger and stronger in 2013. Uncle W

Last week all thoughts were with Chairman of Selectors Jason Hammond and nothing would have pleased him more than the scoreboard at the end of the senior game. All at the club wish Hammo a speedy recovery – our thoughts are with you! Having been on the end of some big scores from Mornington over the years it was pleas-ing to be able to turn the tables and it was great to see the Morno guys all come in for a drink after the game.Big thanks out to Hoops, Hirsty and the guys who put last week’s Seafood Lunch together – a great time was had by all, especially Margo & Audrey! Also a BIG shout out and thanks to our Major Sponsors – TAFT Training, NP Distribution, Frankston RSL, Audi Centre Brighton & Mornington, RAMS Home Loans, Blue Gum, EastWork, BMK and Showtime Attractions – without your support we would not be where we are today. With only 1 game after today before finals we take on Chelsea today with the Unders kicking the dew off out @ Narre Warren. For them the equation is simple – to play finals they must keep winning. Wisha’s Warriors have well and truly locked up the double chance but are not interested in letting up and want to take the win-ning habit into the business end of the year while in the main game today we celebrate the captain’s 200th game milestone. Having played juniors at Frankston East (now Karingal Bulls JFC) and then graduating to senior ranks at a young age Luke VanRaay has been the main stay of Karingal backlines for years. His booming left foot, safe hands and cool decision making all show why he leads the team onto the ground each week – lets give him a 200th to remember.Tonight the Ladies take over the club for Man-o-Man night. The talent list is still under wraps but Jenks denies rumours that the Bali tan will be onstage…Good luck to the U11 and U12 teams tomorrow in their 2nd Semi finals games @ Langwarrin.www.karingalfc.com #gofncbulls #1club Bullseye

A bumper crowd here last week, bolstered by many of our veterans who came for their meet, were to see only one victory over BB. Many thanks to Barrie Chalkley for his handling of the vet meet from which there were many positive actions made to rejuvenate the Past Play-ers Group. Seniors after being in front at qtr time col-lapsed to a 34pt loss v the sharks. Best-Jamie Messina, Brendan Neville & Beau Hendry. Guy Hendry & Aaron Ludewig got 3gls each out of the team’s nine. Reserves gritted their teeth & got away with a 1pt win. Best-Dale Tedge, Jake Berry (4gls) & Jason Mumford. Thirds gave their utmost but suffered an 80pt defeat. Our Thirds play their last game for the season today with there being a bye for them next week. Let’s all gather round as they leave the oval today & give them three hearty cheers for their efforts this year. Well done to Trav, Glen & Barrie for their work with the team & many thanks to their time-keeper Terry Spalding & all others who assisted with the lads. Here come the Mounties today & here we stand enforced to meet them for the 43rd time (Pines 22, ME 20) since 1967 which was the only year that their snrs ever played in the old NFL. We did not see them again till Rd 1,1984 when we bowled them over by 27 pts. “I played in that very first 1967 game & we beat them by 91pts” said one veteran player, “let’s bloody well do it again”. Today Dale Tedge finally gets to play his 100th club game (85sr, 14rs.) Good word is that the combined PFNC vote count & Presentation Day is on Sat. 22 Sept, from noon. More info asap. Published word is that the 2012 Pen Div Elim & First Semi finals will be held here at the EBELL Reserve. Somebody up there like us. Bumper crowd at the Super Rules semis last Sunday too. Thanks to all the Pines people who helped out. Grand Finals here? Footy Fact File. Our highest ever score v Mt Eliza was 27.17-179, a 80 pt marg. in the PFL, 1987. Mark Green booted 6. This PFL has been our only snr final ever played against them. Only one Pines player has kicked 10 or more snr goals against them & that was Craig Neal with 10 in Rd 17, 1988. Good luck to our teams today. the last Bud

A pretty good day for the Club last week with 4/5 results going our way.Disappointing that only the Langwarrin Coach and a couple of others had the courtesy to come into the rooms after the games, and a group of their supporters who decided it was a BYO affair over on the far side of the ground! The Under 18’s dominated throughout, keeping the op-position scoreless in the first half and running away with a 20 goal win. Great to see Sam Christie back playing and in great touch with 4 goals, along with Leigh Craig. The Pascazio boys once again played well, as did Mitch and Jonesy, whilst Lefty and Piercey kicked 3 apiece. The Reserves lost a low scoring affair - Smaley was once again dominant and kicked a couple and Pookie, Pag-onis and Tim Campelj tried hard. We need to bounce back today fellas! The Seniors won comfortably for the 2nd game in a row, restricting the opposition to just 3 goals for the day. Once again the goals were shared around and Dock, Gorms, Lourey and Lloydy played solid games. The A Grade netballers recorded a big 38 goal win over Langy and the B side won a close affair by 7 goals.Social - Major $10K Draw – Tomorrow from Midday and the “Ladies in Red” Luncheon is on next Saturday 25th August.Sponsor of the Week – The MEFC thanks James Crowder and Community Real Estate for their ongoing support.Good luck to all teams today!redleg

Big week end coming up as we host 6 Tiger outfits at Jubilee Park with whatever weather the Gods throw up. It will be a good battle as normal in the Ones with Seaford now in the finals mix and our need to consolidate our grip on top spot. The Twos have climbed into 5th spot and face a third placed foe whilst the Threes have the first of two critical encounters against top three contenders. On top of this the Colts need to win cement the double chance. The Stonekittens also face formidable feline op-position. Whew – it’s a big day in front of the Past Players luncheon.Told you the Combine grow a leg at Regent Park! It took until the last quarter for the guys to throw off a persis-tent opposition and prevail by 58 points. Big Ash had a blinder and this was taken full advantage of by Benny T and Adey Mac. Welcome back Duck and the Wiz chipped in with three large ones. Need to keep the lid on the Magoos who stormed into the Five with a big win, marred by serious injury to Steve Meagher – hope you are recovering well mate. Big Josh. Smaller Ben (4 goals) and Jesse Coggo went well. If we can get over the Tiges we are virtually assured of September action.Another big win by the 18’s with Steve Worton, Ben Hall and Kieran Albanese (5 goals) prominent – now a big fortnight! Both Stonekittens teams got beaten by the lad-der leaders. Have a look at the Club Notes elsewhere in the Record to get all the details. todayWe welcome Past Players, Sponsors and Collopy Club members for a sumptuous repast as the on field activities unfold. Hopefully we can have a clean sheet win wise and then enjoy a few (more) frothies!Diarise these social events September 27 – Vote Count Night (at the rooms)October 6 – Presentation Night (Frankston RSL)

This week’s club notes are brought to you by our spon-sors SUBWAY and REDDY ROASTS.The Colts were more than competitive under lights against one of the league leaders in Beaconsfield. A great game to watch, not a win on the scoreboard, but the way the boys went about the game was something that they can be proud of. Amongst the best in what was a very good team effort were Jake McCartney, Angus Evans and Jordan Waters. The battle for leading ladder positions was on in the Un-der 18’s against a Chelsea unit that had come to play. It was always expected to be a tight contest and the boys contested every issue, digging deeper when it counted to come away with a memorable, 3 point victory. Fantastic games again by Rourke Fischer, Trae Tohiariki and Kale Henderson. The reserves played some of their best footy for the year to lead at every change, eventually overpowering their opponents by 16 points. Well done boys, you are now in the running for finals action. Best players were Rizwan Harun, Paul Vyverberg and Sam Lonie. The seniors played some fantastic football, hard tackling and running were a feature and their ability to work and play for each other really paid off, resulting in constant scoreboard pressure and leading at every change. One of the best team efforts for the year, with best players being Luke Smith, Aaron Walton and Jamie Quanchi. A huge match against a quality opponent next week will require the boys to raise the bar even higher at training. Two wins and a bye for the netball ladies in what is turn-ing out to be another very successful season – well done girls.

This week we welcome our neighbor Bonbeach Sharks to Regents Park. Sure to be three tough games, with a few drinks afterwards. In our last home game we welcome our major sponsors Austral Insulation, Mordialloc Sporting Club, Berry Fit-ness, Bendigo Bank, Precision Panels and Prime Innova-tion Building and Development, and thank them for their support this year. Last week didn’t go to plan, our three footy teams were out pointed by Yc, who appear to have three teams head-ing to the finals, good job that. Our Netballers continue to roll on, and great to see our Under 15 girls notch up their first victory!Plenty going on this weekend, after the Bonny game, come into the rooms and listen to Bear Lhullier belt out some tunes between 6 and 8. Behave yourself and don’t go too hard, as all Past and Present players, committee, supporters, members, helpers, will be back at Regents Park on Sunday for our Club Reunion....A CALL TO ARMS.....starts at 12, finishes late!We also congratulate the EAJFC on their successful year, and wish the Under 16s, Under 12s, and Under 11s the best of luck in the finals this year. Thanks to Pines’ Hospitality last week and for some hangover’s as well. Always good to catch up with some old heads. The day started with a good win by the 3rds with Mick Turville booting 6 goals with Justin Bennett, Dylan Steed, Billy Hogan, and J. Macdonald among many playing well. Maybe another win could be in store today boys. The two’s had the game won but Pines clawed their way back to pinch a hard fought 1 point win. Donks’ kicked 4 goals with Ben Casey, Eammon and Madison Coppard playing well. Much thanks again to those helping out pulling on a boot when we’re looking for numbers.Pines got off to a flyer in the senior game kicking 5 goals to our 1 in the 1st quarter. But a 7 goal second term displaying the best football we’ve played all year set up a certain place in this years finals. Great games to ‘Dim-mer’ [6 goals] and ‘Raz’ [4 goals], along with Simmo, Cliffy, Tommy, Tyz and Blake to name a few. Well done to Cappy’ and his crew on great job thus far. Keep it go-ing guys. All the best at Edi/Asp today everyone. tonight: Bonbeach Cup & Con Artist Night: $15 per head with finger foodBusiness lunch: 7th September 12 Noon -4pm : Featur-ing Guest speakers Luke Nolan [Black Caviars jockey], Chris Symons and Glen Archer, $120 per head includes 3 course meal & drinks.presentation Night: Friday 5th October

Dolphins slog Coburg… againThe ground was a bog and the game was a slog, but the Frankston Dolphins were more than up for the chal-lenge as they defeated Coburg by 18 points, their fourth consecutive win over the Richmond-aligned side.In thick mud at the Coburg City Oval the Dolphins started the strongest and never relented, leading by 17 at quarter-time, 14 at half-time and 18 at the last break, never letting the Tigers within two goals.Shane Hockey, Mitch Bosward and Leigh Kitchin were superb inside the packs, opening up the game for the classy Kyle Martin on the outside.Martin collected 31 possessions and made a mockery of the sticky conditions, cutting the game open with some exquisite kicking.Where Coburg struggled up forward, Luke Clark provided much-needed punch for the Dolphins. After kicking 7.25 going into the game, Pup produced two miraculous set shots from the deep scoreboard pocket in the first and third quarters to keep Frankston clear of any challenge.Kicking against the breeze in the final term the Dolphins were simply the more desperate team, and when Hockey snapped brilliantly out of a congested pack the margin was 20 points and the contest over.

In defence, Seaford’s Jarrod Irving was resolute all day, constantly flying into packs to spill the ball for his team’s dominant small men, while the intelligent play of Dylan Van Unen and Leigh Osborne defused count-less Coburg attacks. The Dolphins took out the clearance battle 46-35, and when they weren’t winning the ball they were lay-ing an amazing 93 tackles to tear the spirit from their opponents.Frankston 7.5.47 d coburg tigers 3.11.29Goal Kickers: L. Prying AFL eyesWith six former Dolphins already playing in the AFL, there was further great news last week when four cur-rent players received official draft screening invitations for the post-season.Khan Haretuku, Kitchin and Martin were invited to the State Screening in Melbourne, while the lightning-quick Osborne was invited to the National Draft Camp in Canberra. AFL clubs have also enquired about a number of other Dolphins, showing the team’s improved form has not gone unnoticed. Word is that Irving, Van Unen, Corey Buchan and Lachy Delahunty have all received some level of interest.

1000 Great reasons to smileToday marks a significant in football history. The Victorian State Home Loans Southern Umpires Association will be honouring their favourite son Jeff Jones as he officiates his 1000th senior football match in the clash between Edi-Asp v Bonbeach.

Whilst chatting with Jeff last Saturday, he reflected back on an umpiring career that started back in 1982. It’s probably not

well known that Jeff actually began his career as a club boundary umpire with ROC at the age of 8 years old. In his first year he only umpired the under 15’s and then in his second year did both the under 15’s & 17’s on the same day. During that time he played junior football for Narre Warren in the SWGFL before moving to Hastings in 1984 and assumed his interest in umpiring the following year with the MPJFL as a field umpire and a boundary umpire with the southern umpires at 11.

Jeff spent 6 years umpiring in both leagues and umpired across all grades officiating in a number of inter-league and grand finals matches for the MPJFL. He decided to leave boundary umpiring in 1985 to concentrate on field umpiring with the SUA. In 1986 Jeff joined the SUA field umpires squad and umpired/officiated in

his first senior Nepean league game (Pearcedale vs Frankston YCW) at the age of 13 and then a year later officiated his first senior Peninsula league game (Red Hill vs Frankston YCW).

His list of achievements in umpiring stretch a mile long and probably sits as one of the most highly dedicated and respected umpires in the Mornington Peninsula.

Jeff’s achievements extend across: 9 Peninsula Senior Grand Finals, 3 Nepean Senior Grand Finals, 2 Reserves Grand Finals, 3 Under 18 Grand Finals and numerous junior Grand Finals. Indeed, Jeff has umpired a Grand Final in each year he has umpired with the SUA dating back to 1985.

From 1992 to 1994 and again in 1996 Jeff was at the VFL/AFL and has the distinction of being one of the field umpires in the first TAC Cup Grand Final in 1992 and emergency umpire Hawthorn v Fitzroy senior match at Waverley Park.

2008 rated as one of his career highlights where he was named Co-Umpire of the Century in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League team of the centenary side and in 2011 was awarded the Victorian Country Football League Outstanding Contribution to Community Umpiring, Australian Football League Umpiring Award and the VSHL-SUA Jim Klauer Outstanding Service Award.

Southern Umpires

Since his time in umpiring with the SUA he has been a member of the executive, social committee, tribunal advocate, observers program, and field umpires coach, is a level 4 accredited umpire, golden whistle award winner, umpire of the year and was inducted as a life member of the SUA in 2000. His commitment not only to his umpiring, the SUA and the MPNFL is second to none, as he has lived and worked in the Melbourne CBD area since he was 21 and continued to travel in excess of an hour to training and game day even though there are some 5 – 6 umpiring bodies within his area. He has also been committed to the development of junior umpires and umpiring over many years by making himself available to umpire

in the under 18’s competition before officiating in his senior game that same afternoon. His umpiring coaches over the years read like a who’s who of umpiring with names like Rowan Sawers, Glenn James, Ian Robinson, Kevin Mitchell and David Levin’s and his local association coaches John Gambetta, Kevin Smith, Mike Viney and Peter MarshallHe thanks his employers over the years for allowing him the time to umpire from the early day of Frankston Tuckerbag to Priceline and Pharmacy Alliance and now his role as Chief Executive of the MPNFL.He owes a lot to his parents Bob & Jan for their support and commitment to his umpiring as they had to drive him to every game every weekend which not only gave him every opportunity to progress in umpiring but also allowed him to learn to drive a car as that was his scheduled driving lesson each week rain hail or shine but wasn’t allowed to drive home after the game as mum felt I was a little too exhausted to be in charge of a car. When Jonesy holds the ball aloft as he walks on the ground today we know that there will be a group of supporters, friends and family who will acknowledge a fantastic milestone. The SUA salutes you Jeff and I am sure that the MPNFL fraternity will also join us in recognising a career well-achieved.

ChelseaLast Saturday was another hard fought game by the Seagals.

Our B girls struggled to match the strength of Seaford but nonetheless gave it a red hot go. We took some good intercepts but found it difficult to convert this into goals. Against an opposition that plied good pressure, accurate goaling and consistent play, we were just un-able to match their drive. But as always, the girls gave their best for that day, good girls. I think my girls are just too nice.

The A girls had a good day out with fill ins a plenty thanks to Lisa and Ash, we had a team of 8 to take the court. We started well with our mixed bag of team mates but blended well and surprisingly were level pegging with Seaford at half time. From our leader on the court Ash, doing more than required. Every week wanting to continue to play even with a bad ankle to our fills ins doing all they could and core group Cassie, Charlene, Mel and Sally giving their best. We played some very consistent netball converting our plays most-ly into goals, but just losing our momentum after half time. The girls can hold their heads high taking it right up to the girls from Seaford. Thankyou to Seaford for an excellent venue and a great hit out. Thank you again to all my girls both A and B’s for the privilege of coaching a truly lovely bunch.

Edithvale-AspendaleLast Saturday the C Grade girls enjoyed a week off while the A & B grade teams played YCW at Sturdee Street. The B Grade girls started the day strongly and played a terrific game of netball with some fantastic passages of play. It was very hard to pick a best player so I’ll do a Thorpie & name the whole team as BOC. Meanwhile the A Grade game was a good contest. Laura was out-standing on the back line and Lainie, Holly & Bri, were in fine form controlling the centre court. A good day for netball, played in good spirit. As today is our last home game for the 2012, Bear L’Huillier will be back at Regents creating a great at-mosphere for our final post match gathering. Hope to see you all there. Wendo is looking for helpers for the Reunion Day on Sunday 19th. Please see her at training as this will be a great day! The Monster Raffle will also be drawn, so make sure you see Ted or Helen for tickets.Special mention this week goes to our juniors - Our U15 netballers were for scoring a long overdue win and the boys of the U16 Blues, who won their First Semi Final against YCW last Sunday. We wish you the best in the Prelim Final! Today our C team travel to Pearcedale and our A & B teams welcome the lovely ladies from Bonbeach to Sturdee Street. I can’t help but reflect on the fact that last time we played the Sharks, both teams paid their respect and bid a fond farewell to our own Kenny Ly-ons. It was such a sad day but with a silver lining due

to the support we received from the Bonbeach adminis-trators and netballers! Your thoughtfulness will be long remembered.

Good luck to all our Eagle teams playing this weekend!

go eagles!!

Frankston YCWAnother wet, windy and freezing cold day down at Sturdee Park where we met the ever elusive Edi – Asp for the second time this season. A little bit of light rain certainly did not help the stonekittens cause with slips, slides and splits from one end of the court to the other. Both teams were looking at shortening the final margins with A grade managing to reel in ten goals, but unfortu-nately all did not prevail for the B grade girls.

Peninsula NetballThe B team struggled to find the goal ring all game and decided to take it easy in the final quarter mak-ing some interesting but quite amusing changes. Gab Tellis worked her behind off in the defence end playing a great game with a never give up attitude. Jac Coy’s another of the B grade girls showing great im-provement over the season and really starting to step up her game, and Suz Weidner was impressive running hard in the centre court always presenting and showing those second, third and fourth efforts.

The A grade girls were simply outplayed by a better team on the day with a significant height advantage in the goal circle….. Edi-asp took off with a handy lead and the stonekittens trailed 16-8 at quarter time. The girls were determined to keep the score in tow, con-verting centre passes and maintaining goal for goal the majority of the second quarter. Unfortunately the girls were unable to keep it going for the full four quarters. Lee Kitson who’s been consistently outstanding all sea-son put in another fine performance through the mid court. Lyshae had her hands full with a height differ-ence from out of this world, but managed to come away with a few good grabs playing man on man tac-tics. Court was strong once again down in the attacking end giving the ball and going, creating great space to lead into the goal circle.

Our final home game this week sees us take on the Tigers at home. Should be a couple of great games so would be great to see as many supporters down there as possible!

go stonekittens!

KaringalThis week we hosted Mornington at the Bullpit. It was great to see all our girls donning their emerald and blue ribbons in support of a great Karingal FNC clubman - the Bullettes are all behind you! Nobody fights alone!

We started off on a wet court for C grade - welcome to the joys of winter sport girls! Laura P stood tall in goals, with a consistent game at GS. Coach Kate keep the ball moving in the goal ring. Alyce provided brilliant run in WA when she came on after half time.

After a 40 point win the last time we met, the girls were smart enough to still give the Mornington girls respect they deserved and not become complacent. Running out eventual winners by 10 goals.

B grade faced fourth placed Mornington and knew we were in for a close game. After several lead changes, we went into the third quarter up. Unfortuantely our second half let us down with poor passes. Mornington scored 16 goals to our 9 in the third quarter. Poor deci-sion making on court saw us defeated by 5 goals. Not one of our better performances but definitely some-thing to learn from for next week! Sara shot 15 goals in three quarters after a third quarter out at WA. Katie shot 11 from GA and Emma 14 also in GA. Emily was briliant in defence and unfortunately had to leave us at half time to make her game at Jubilee Park. Jaime

recieved terrible news at half time but stepped into GD and played well on a very consistant GA. We all hope Fish receives a positive diagnosis. Laura Jack was el-evated from C grade this week and slotted in nicely, playing a great game at WD. Mornington was hungry for the win and they got it. We need to play much more consistant netball if we are going to secure wins from close games. We need much more talk on the court and get back to playing our style of netball.

A grade were lucky enough to step onto a completely dry court at 1.15pm. The last time we met at Morning-ton, we were defeated by 27 goals. The girls went in with a positive attitude and turned the result, hanging on to ensure a one goal win! Beck was sensational in goals and has shot over 300 for the season! Steph did plenty off the ball in the goal ring and didnt let being vertically challenged affect her! Rachel and Mel were back in fine form in defence and Jade playing in her preferred position of WA provided great . Little Birdy never ceases to amaze with run for the whole game. Bree - our most versatile player who slots into any team

MPNFL Since 1908 31

Peninsula Netballwhere needed - looked like she belonged in WD and worked well with Rach & Mel. All in all a superb per-formance by each of the 8 players and a well deserved win that could have easily gone either way.

Big thanks goes to Miss Reeves who showed great club spirit coming down for the day in the cold conditions and scored despite being sick!

Today we meet Chelsea away. Good luck to all the Bulls & Bullettes taking to the field / court.

Don’t forget tonight is Man O Man night back at the clubrooms, $40 can be paid at the door and a great night of entertainment is assured!

LangwarrinTough game this week, facing off against Mt Eliza. All the girls tried their hardest under some tough game conditions. Best on for B’s goes to Mel Howe taking the Bretta’s voucher for her continued effort in the mid court. Best on this week in A’s goes to Ally Quadara for her defensive work in the goals. Heads up girls, well be back stronger next season.

Today we play Mornington and look forward to the clash and dancing the night away at our Op Shop for-mal!

MorningtonWe had a very even competition against Karingal last week with all 3 teams matching up well. There was some concern whether the Ballam Park court would be suitable to play on and the girls were wary of the slippery surface. Luckily the court dried out for B and A grade, with only the last 5 minutes of A grade causing an issue after a light sprinkling of rain changed the pace of the game.C grade were competitive for the first half with Ros ac-curate in goals. Gemma played consistently for 4 quar-ters and linked the defence to the attackers. Nicole and

Cathy created several turnovers in defence however a number of errors in the third quarter saw the score open up.

B grade got off to a great start with Beth and Leah shoot-ing well in the windy conditions. A second quarter slump saw us down by 8 at the main break however we regrouped and had a blinder in the third to be only one goal down at 3 /4 time. Strong rebounding by Meg and Stacey gave us more opportunities to score in the last and we came away with a good win.

A grade was goal for goal all game. Alyshia threw some amazing goals after working hard to make position for Tess and Chris to pass to her. Kirsty at WD gave drive from defence through the centre court and Ella was strong at GK. We came from 3 down at the last break and got a much needed turnover from which we scored and scores were level.

The last 5 minutes went goal for goal but unfortunately time was not on our side and we went down by one solitary goal.

Well done to all the players and supporters – a great effort for our young team.

NewsXpress Mornington Centro – C grade- Gemma, B grade – Stacey, A grade – Alyshia

This week sees our girls at home against Langwarrin, the C’s against The Pines. The A’s have a slim hope of making the finals but need results of other games to go our way. B’s need to consolidate their teamwork in preparation for finals and C’s are still after that aloof win.

Mount ElizaFantastic win by our girls against ‘tough’ opposition. From the onset the girls took control of the match and stayed focused on the job at hand to bring home the 4 points. It was great to have Elise back in goals work-ing well with Racheal in shooter. Once again Renae and Nikki were tight in defense and didn’t let too much sneak past them. Meaghan did well all day showing flexibility playing in 3 different positions! Karen direct-ed the play through the centre court with the help of Bronwyn and Mandy on the wings.

32 MPNFL Since 1908

A very convincing win starting and finishing strong. Staying composed under the circumstances was a cred-it to all. Karen controlled the circle shooting beautifully with support from both Anna and Bec during the game. Our defense all over the court was disciplined seeing Jess W. and Michelle execute some fabulous intercepts in our defensive end. Jess A. and Ellie worked the cen-tre court brilliantly often shutting down the oppositions centre pass.

Two wonderful wins, well done to all concerned.

Thanks again to our generous sponsor SIMPLY BRAZILIAN.

PearcedaleLast week heading to the Pines was a must win for the girls to obtain position to play in their first final togeth-er. All players played a fab game and this was a hard game to select the Best On Court. The girls have worked so well together, with players out due to holidays has played a huge part in their game play. This week was host Edi-Asp and are after another great result from our previous times we have met, playing this side is our way to see how far they really have come. BOC: Jade Bradley.

Well done PANTHERS….ROCK IT TODAY PANTHERS

PinesC Grade played a hard game against Pearcedale with a up and down scoreline all game the girls came away with the win by 5 goals - special mentions to Hayley & Karen.

B Grade unfortunately could not take it to Bonbeach going down by 11 goals lets refocus today girls and fin-ish off the season with two more wins - special men-tions Shona & Michelle

A Grade great win by the girls who lead strongly from the first whistle coming home with a 40 goal win - Spe-cial mentions Kat & Fiona.

Dont forget tonight ladies we have the Special Effort Draw - please see me if you want a ticket plenty still available.

Presentation Day / Night will be held on Saturday 22nd September at the clubrooms details will be released this week.

With today being our second last round lets finish off the season strongly and stick together as a club.

We have had some ups and downs this year but on a whole we have come from nowhere to a club that is recognised. You have all been fantastic support for each other and we look forward to carrying this on into next season.

Good Luck today Pythonettes

SeafordLast week C Grade had a bye & this week will play against Karingal at Karingal.

B Grade: Our girls showed a positive, level headed, determined approach till the end of the game which resulted in a very comfortable win by 45 goals to Sea-ford. Lauren and Mel King stepped up this week and fitted into the team well. Sally had a change of position and did a great job in centre.

All the girls were confident and never let up the pres-sure on Chelsea.

A Grade: At home the girls had a rocky start to the game against Chelsea; with it being goal for goal in the first quarter. Eventually the girls settled into a rhythm and were able to post a win of 14 goals but it didn’t come without a fight.

Chelsea showed her versatility playing at both ends of the court. Tayla, Leah and Rania in defence put pres-sure on the Chelsea shooters, while in goals the rota-tion of our three shooters worked well.
