Nurturing Potential. Harvesting Dreams.

By reaching out across the ocean to those

we know are in need in rural areas of

India, we — the Share & Care community

— are sharing roots of love. And while we know

funds are needed to drive our efforts, you also

rely on us to ensure that the women and chil-

dren who need us receive true compassion by

providing real opportunities.

This year we’re celebrating the untapped po-

tential of our beneficiaries, and the power of

that potential to make dreams come true. The

people we serve in India live with poverty and

discrimination in their lives, and often are never

exposed to what is possible. We work every day

towards providing more and more deserving

people with access to education, basic health-

care, sanitation and hygiene, and empowerment

through independence and safety for women.

We believe that with access and the right tools,

we can help empower those marginalized by so-

ciety. By nurturing potential we are ultimately

harvesting the dreams of our beneficiaries.

Our annual Gala not only celebrates the peo-

ple we serve, it’s also a time to honor those

who have made it possible to transform the

lives of thousands of people: YOU. It’s only

because of you that we have been able to ex-

pand our programs and assist more beneficia-

ries in more locations.

Together, we have spent 35 years building on

the foundation — the roots — of love.

We cultivate love when we allow our most vulnerable and powerful selves to be deeply seen and known, and when we honor the spiritual connec-tion that grows from that offering with trust, respect, kindness, and affection.

Love is not something we give or get; it is something that we nurture and grow, a connection that can only be cultivated between two people when it exists within each one of them — we can only love others as much as we love ourselves.

From the Desk of the PresidentHumanity, period.

We — the people involved in charitable work — spend a vast amount of time working on our mission, goals, and strategies. We undertake projects dealing in Education, Women Empowerment, Healthcare, and Sanitation & Hygiene with pride; and we communicate efficiently to achieve the best results across all of our programs.

However, after spending 35 years in humanitarian work, I arrived at a simple conclusion when we heard that 25,000+ people were forced from their homes after heavy rain and flooding in North Gujarat. We called an emergency meet-ing to prepare a rescue plan towards our Phase 1 Goal: “Im-mediate Help”. That, simply, is humanity. When there is a crisis threatening lives, we drop all individual philosophies in pursuit of one common goal: To protect the well-being of humans.

The response team, consisting of management, expe-rienced humanitarians, and our members who have in-depth knowledge of North Gujarat, was called in to cre-ate a strategy to assist affected people immediately. The team rolled up their sleeves, gathered information, and created a plan — all within 48 hours.

Our goal was established: To provide 1,000 families with basic survival items in one week. We approved a fund of $30,000 and gave a four-member sub-committee the re-sponsibility to complete the task in few days. After research and due diligence, they finalized the operation and agreed to work with four partners in India who had volunteers on the ground, to ensure help reached those families without delay. In one week, our mission was accomplished. BRAVO!

This was our 15th post-disaster relief effort. (The first was the Bhopal Disaster relief, three decades ago.) Because every disaster is unique, each requires uniquely tailored relief efforts. Dealing with the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, for instance, was quite different than dealing with the 2001 Gujarat Earthquake. No matter the circumstances, we have taken the best possible actions yielding maximum results.

I am proud to say that our members, volunteers, and staff are very professional. They are well-equipped with knowledge and training to deal with disaster relief work

efficiently so that useful help reaches victims as quickly as possible and with the best possible outcomes.

We will continue to monitor the situation in North Gujarat and decide if we should undertake projects in Phase 2 (stopgap) and/or Phase 3 (long-term rehabilitation). Be assured that this work will not compromise our other ef-forts. Disaster relief work does not permit us to divert from our Signature Projects; it is not an either/or situa-tion. Our core activities in Women Empowerment, Ed-ucation, Healthcare, and Sanitation & Hygiene — which are making significant progress, as you’ll see in the fol-lowing pages of this book — will continue uninterrupted.

For more on our accomplishments over the past 35 years, I invite you to review our Timeline (pp. 36-37). I am sure you will join me in taking pride in our journey.

You all have been very generous over the past many years. You are essential partners and teammates in our fight for humanity. In past crises, we have joined together. I am con-fident that our combined generosity and dedication will not only take us out of current challenges posed by natural di-sasters, but will also advance our ongoing commitment to improving lives.

Humanity will prevail.

Best wishes,

Sharad Shah President, Share & Care Foundation

DEAR PATRONSAND FRIENDS...

At press time we’ve added the Texas and Florida hurricanes to our relief operations,

marking the first time we’ve needed to spread

our resources across three disasters at the same

time. But we must pull together to meet this

unusual challenge, can we count on you?

Now in our 35th year of bringing hope and sustainable change to rural India.6

Dance to Change the World

MEET THE ARTISTSMALLIKA SARABHAI has been one of India’s leading choreographers and dancers for over three decades. She has a PhD in organiza-tional behavior and has been honorary director of Darpana Academy of Performing Arts for 40 years. Mallika’s work is unique in its dedication to aesthet-ic and artistic perfection while staying deeply com-mitted to social justice issues.

REVANTA SARABHAI is a performer, cho-reographer, multimedia designer, and filmmaker. He has toured with The Darpana Performing Group since 1999, as well as independently since 2010, and earned his masters in Performance & Creative Research at Roehampton University. Revanta’s work as a dancer/choreographer has been show-cased at several prestigious venues and festivals across Asia, Europe, and North America.

POOJA PUROHIT began her Bharatanatyam training under Guru Kanaklata Sakurikar, before joining the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in 2008. She has since performed in numerous productions with the company across multiple continents. Pooja is a qualified dance teacher as well as a certified yoga instructor.

HEMVATI SHAH has trained in Bharata natyam since 2000 and in Kuchipudi since 2007. She joined Darpana in 2014, where she has performed in several productions and expanded her vocabulary to include contemporary dance. She has also trained in yoga and Hindustani vocal music.

For our 35th Annual Gala, we are proud to announce two spectacular dance productions:

Love Songs to Shiva celebrates the verve and spirit of India’s most ancient classical dance form, Bharatanatyam — brought to you by a quintessentially 21st-century chore-ographer. In this production, Mallika Sarabhai and the Darpana Performing Group dance to Shiva Nataraja, the God of all dance.

The deep-rooted alphabet of classical Bharatanatyam is a rich language for con-temporary choreographers. In Finding My Voice, Revanta Sarabhai follows the ex-plorations of his grandmother, Mrinalini Sarabhai, and his mother, Mallika Sarabhai, to experiment with visual and directional perspective.

DISASTER RELIEF

When a disaster strikes — such

as a flood or earthquake — we

believe it is the moral obliga-

tion of organizations like Share &

Care Foundation to rise up and

help. Since our founding 35 years

ago, we have provided invaluable

support to victims of numerous

disasters in India and the U.S.

65% to 267% above average across

affected districts of Gujarat.. BOTTOM

nets at a village in northeast Gujarat.

assembled for displaced families.

Emergency Aid for Flood Victims2017 Gujarat FloodsMost recently, the Disaster Relief Committee responded to the July 2017 floods in the Indian state of Gujarat. Catastrophic floods destroyed homes, submerged farmland and cattle, and displaced thousands of families. In response to this ongoing disaster, the foundation’s Board of Trustees approved an immediate release of $30,000 to provide relief in some of the most heavily affected areas of the state. These funds equip hundreds of families with survival kits, ba-sic medical aid, and drinking water, which we are currently distributing with the help of four local, reputable NGOs.

23

TOP LEFT: With thousands left homeless, there

is dire need for everyday essentials beyond

food and water. BOTTOM LEFT: Surrounded by

makeshift shelters, displaced families wait in line

to receive survival kits. RIGHT: Roads connecting

people to vital supplies were damaged or

inundated during and after the floods, making

travel extremely difficult.

Banaskantha and SabarkanthaIn the Banaskantha and Sabarkan-tha districts, we assisted in orga-nizing the distribution of 500 sur-vival kits. Traveling on foot, a team of eight relief workers visited mul-tiple villages, where they met with local leaders and social workers to assess the damage and to distrib-ute kits. Our efforts in these areas also focus on providing drinking water, fodder for cattle, personal hygiene items, and clean-up for schools and childcare centers.

Deesa and PalanpurIn the Deesa and Palanpur areas of northern Gujarat, we helped distribute ration kits for more

than 350 families. Each of these kits contains a stove, grains, tea leaves, spices, and eating utensils.

Also in Deesa — as well as in Ban-askantha and southern Rajasthan — we helped deliver kits contain-ing clothes, toothbrushes, and basic food items. The kits distrib-uted in these areas will help ap-proximately 1,000 families.

RadhanpurIn the Radhanpur area, we are assisting in the distribution of mosquito nets and grocery kits. It is estimated that each grocery kit will feed a family of four for at least two weeks.

Keeping the Help ComingTo continue our disaster relief efforts, we need your generous support. Our goal is to raise a total of $155,000 in funds for the vic-tims of the catastrophic Gujarat floods. Your generous contribu-tion will make a huge difference in the lives of the people affected by this tragedy.

Immediate Relief: $30,000 (in progress)As described, these funds are supplying food rations and ba-sic necessities for displaced families.

GRACE, A GIFT

Open, curious, and creative artist explores issues of identity, gender, power, and spirituality.

When Shreya Mehta, artist and Share & Care member, offered to create the cover art for this year’s Annual Souve-nir Book, we were ecstatic. When she also graciously donated “Grace,” seen at right, we were utterly and complete-ly humbled. “Grace” will be awarded to one of our key donors at this year’s Gala.

Shreya is an award-winning fine art-ist who explores the juxtaposition of Eastern and Western cultures, the ever-changing power struggle in gen-der roles, the forces of traditional mind-

sets vs. today’s technology-focused world, and the challenges for women pulled in many directions. Her vibrant and varied works have been exhibited at the Indian Consulate in New York and in the collection of Prime Minister Modi. Born in India, raised and trained in Belgium, and now living and working in New York, Shreya brings a global per-spective and a gentle, positive touch to all her endeavors.

Continually inspired by the Gandhi quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” Shreya donates all pro-ceeds from her artwork to charitable causes.

OUR GOALS

28 Now in our 35th year of bringing hope and sustainable change to rural India.

HEALTHCARE 2 UNREACHED

The Share & Care Foundation con-tinues to promote self-sustainable development of education and health infrastructure in northwest-ern Rajasthan’s rural Khichan-Phal-odi area, located in Jodhpur district. Large parts of Jodhpur district fall under the area of the Thar Desert, a large, arid region is characterized by adverse climatic conditions and chronic droughts.

Working with a local NGO, Share & Care is delivering much-needed healthcare to villagers who require a combination of education, pub-lic sanitation, and regular access to healthcare providers and facilities. We’ve been in Kerla village since 2010/2011, and started the same pro-gram in Suwap village (in the same district) in 2015. The yearly cost per patient is less than $10.

A lack of basic amenities make life extremely challenging, especially for women and girls. Amidst this, the health conditions in the remote vil-lages are horrendous. It is reflected in high rates of disease, malnutrition, mortality, and morbidity rates. Poor health hampers educational oppor-tunities for girls, and female illiteracy is high. It is a very difficult area with little socio-economic development.

We have also embarked on an Im-proving Child and Mother Survival project with another local NGO, with the objective of reducing infant and maternal mortality in three Jodhpur district villages.

DELIVERING HEALTHCARE, ONE VILLAGE AT A TIME

Kerla Village: 2010/2011–PresentKerla, located in the middle of the Thar Desert, has no roads, no trans-portation facilities, no electricity, no water, and, prior to Share & Care’s involvement, no healthcare system.

The nearest health facility for any kind of medical aid, even for dress-ing a wound or providing injections, was 18 km away in the village of Aau.

Our ImpactOur work began with renovation of a building that had been originally con-structed by the local government, but had never seen use. In great dis-repair, it was ready to collapse. The health center had never been occu-pied by either a doctor or nurse.

By the start of 2012, the center was completely renovated and has been fully capable of providing preven-tive therapeutic and rehabilitation services. A sub-center provides for examinations and necessary treat-ments that include medicines, vacci-nations, immunizations, and nutrition-al supplements. Senior physicians run weekly clinics, and an auxiliary

nurse midwife and a village-level healthcare worker are present day and night, and provide all required emergency services. Additionally:

A total of 16,520 women, men, and children were seen between De-cember 2011 and 2016.• The village’s infant mortality rate

(< 1 yr.) went from 77 per 1,000 births to zero per 1,000 in the first year and has remained consistent for the last four years.

Bringing Healthcare to the Unreachable

29

• The number of women seeking treatment for pelvic inflammation — very common among wom-en in the area — went down from around 22–32 per week in 2012, to only 1–4 per week currently.

• Instances of human whipworm (an infection in the large intestine related to poor hygiene) are very common in the area, but no lon-ger result in malnutrition due to timely treatment.

• Skin diseases such as scabies and ringworm, also very common, are treated readily, preventing them from spreading throughout the population.

• Other common ailments, such as malnutrition anemia and hypocal-caemia (low calcium), and chronic diseases, such as asthma, diabe-tes, and COPD, are treated during weekly visits, thus preventing additional health issues and im-proving quality of life.

Suwap Village: 2015–PresentThe village health conditions were perilous. Because water and electric-ity are scarce, Suwap villagers live in a small conglomeration of huts with-out toilets. A doctor had never visited the location, and no other healthcare workers were available. The infant mortality rate was 79.66% and immu-nization rates and antenatal care for women was almost nonexistent. The nearest community center to Suwap was 80 km away in Phalodi Town, and the nearest primary health center was located 17 km away in Aau.

Our ImpactShare & Care became involved in 2015 to help form a healthcare program. By 2016, an abandoned health center was completely ren-ovated, including a waiting area, a small laboratory, a birthing facility, a well-equipped residential facility for nursing staff, underground water storage, and indoor in-patient care.

For the first half of 2017:• A total of 1,840 women, men, and

children were seen between Jan-uary and July 2017.

• 32 infants (< 1 yr.) and 15 children (1–5 yrs.) received vaccinations.

• 38 pregnant women received an-tenatal care and immunizations.

• 33 women visited for the first time, and 13 for the second time, and were immunized.

• 25 patients had laboratory tests re-lated to malaria, pregnancy, and lev-els of hemoglobin, blood sugar, etc.

Results are encouraging and are comparable to that of Kerla, whose

four-year results indicate to us that an investment in infrastructure, a full-time experienced nursing staff, and a regular weekly visit of a senior doctor can make a tremendous dif-ference in the lives of villagers, in-cluding significant decreases in child and mother mortality and morbidity.

A Real Life StoryA Family Learns the Truth, Just in TimeIn May this year, 20-year old Madi-na — eight-months pregnant with her first child — traveled a great dis-tance with her parents to visit the Suwap Health Sub Center. This was Madina’s first visit to a health facili-ty, and she had come to seek help for symptoms of coughing and feel-ing dizzy. Her face was puffy and she had difficulty breathing; she had edema (an often painful, abnormal accumulation of fluid under the skin that manifests itself as swelling) and appeared anemic. A blood work-up confirmed she had barely one-fourth the normal levels of hemo-globin: anemia.

The consulting physician explained that both her life and the life of her baby were in danger. Her parents were surprised to hear how sick she was, they had only brought her to the center because of her recent symptoms.

Within two days they rushed Madina to a hospital in Khichan where she had a transfusion. Still not under-standing the severity of the problem, another two days later she received a second transfusion. The following night she went into labor and, at 3 a.m., she gave birth to a baby girl.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Kerla Resident Urges Share & Care to Continue Program

With no transportation facility in this village to take treatment, our life was difficult. Treatment was ir-regular, and we had much suffering. Today, doctors are coming regularly every week, without interruption. The villagers request Share & Care to please continue their support. We are not in a position to afford healthcare, and the government does not provide a required facility. Please continue to favor us as you have done over the last four years, to keep the women and children of Kerla healthy.

30 Now in our 35th year of bringing hope and sustainable change to rural India.

HEALTHCARE 2 UNREACHED

Today, both mother and baby are hap-py and thankful. The outcome could have been much different. Thankful-ly, the resurrected Suwap Health Sub Center was there for immediate help, plus a hassle-free referral for afford-able treatment.

Improving Child and Mother Survival — A Holistic ApproachAbout a year ago, we embarked on the Improving Child and Mother Sur-vival project, with the objective of re-ducing infant and maternal mortality in three Jodhpur district villages. The project affects about 600 women, 1,200, children, and 400 adolescents through education, improved nutri-tion, and improved collaboration with government healthcare.

GoalsOver the course of three years, Share & Care will help implement a num-ber of health interventions, including training village health workers and implementing a specialized nutrition education program for women and adolescent girls and boys.

In addition, antenatal care services will be provided and arid horticulture units will be set up to support nutri-tion. The project also has a learning and research component that will al-low progress to be measured against baseline data and final evaluations, and used to improve beneficial health behaviors within the communities.

We believe that community-based holistic interventions can make a sig-nificant contribution in reducing child and mother mortality and in creating healthy societies across India. So,

while the project directly benefits more than 2,200 women and adoles-cents in the three villages, the sec-ondary goal is to promote the repli-cation of the program in many more villages.

We at Share & Care Foundation express

our sincere thanks to our partner NGOs

International Human Benefit Services and

GRAVIS. We are working with HBS Trust

ucation and health infrastructure to rural

Rajasthan, and with GRAVIS on our Im-

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Suwap Resident Thanks Share & Care for Responsiveness

We receive a physician visit to our center every Tuesday, and full-time nursing staff stay in the center. Transportation is provided to vaccinate all children, as residences are scattered far apart. The doctor also provides us with referral services and sends us to the required specialized center so that we can get free and affordable services. We are thankful that the Share & Care Foundation has been so responsive to our difficulties.

SANITATION & HYGIENE

The Share & Care Foundation has been a leader in improving the dignity, health, and wellness of women, children, and families living in poverty by constructing 770 toilets and improving poor sanitary conditions overall in seven rural Gujarat villages: Alindra, Chadotar, Vanzarapura, Gane-shpura, Bhutedi, Dangarva, and Fudeda.

The project combines new construction of low-cost/high-quality toilets with education on both their use and other daily health and hygiene practices. Specifically, the women of the seven villages were among the worthiest beneficiaries. In the past, they would often wait

through the long days until the cover of night provided much-needed protection against the embarrassment and shame — and dan-gers — of relieving themselves in the open. The village residents had used the open areas around nearby ponds, streets, and agricultur-al fields to relieve themselves—polluting land, water, air, and food production.

A Real Measure of SuccessChange was made evident within one year: Residents have stopped open defecation by using the toilets, and little to no human waste is seen out in the open. We have heard many reports of people noticing this remarkable change, as well as a shift toward adopting posi-tive sanitation and hygiene habits. Also, the new toilets and education mean girls and women are now able to avoid the risk of assault, rape, and harassment, while living a healthier — and far more comfortable — lifestyle.

Within 14 months the project achieved mea-surable and qualitative results, including;

• Building trusting relationships with village leaders, who assumed a vested-interest in maintaining the project’s ongoing success.

• Teaching local masons new skills on sani-tary facility construction and maintenance; building the local economies, and reducing dependence on external help.

• Demonstrating sanitary awareness through three-day programs where the karykar-tas (staff) enjoyed an intense, yet loving teaching experience with village residents.

NIRMAL VILLAGE PROGRAM

34 Now in our 35th year of bringing hope and sustainable change to rural India.

SANITATION & HYGIENE

Chauhan Babaubhai Ghudabhai I have two physically chal-lenged family members. My daughter Laxmi is complete-ly dependent upon me and Hansaben, my daughter-in-law, is blind. Having to trek some distance for them to use the toilet with my assis-tance had been challenging. After receiving our toilet, I am relieved of this burden since both are now self-sufficient. When my daughters ex-pressed their happiness about the new conditions, they were spreading blessings to all who contributed to making this change in our village.

Chandrikaben Patni Govindbhai I study in 9th Std. and always felt shame when having to go outside, in the open, to use the toilet in the morning and evening. It was partic-ularly stressful during time of menses. Now, I’m using my toilet without any fear or stress.

Vanzara Bhemaji Nanaji When I lost my leg in a road accident I became handi-capped. I used to need at least one person’s support to use the outside toilet. It was hu-miliating. When I took a small bucket of water, no one was ready to come with me and people would run away, mak-ing me feel bad. Now, I have my own toilet at my house and I’m feeling very good.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

The team made three follow-up visits to each village to see how the beneficiaries were car-ing for their new toilets. In the overwhelm-ing majority of cases, we saw that they were treating them with a great deal of care and re-spect, which gave us confidence that no fur-ther visits were required. We can say, without a doubt, that the project has had a positive impact, and is positioned for future success.

Here we share responses of the villagers themselves:

TOP: Completed toilets at Vanzarapura. RIGHT: A village resident

stands proudly next to her family’s newly constructed toilet.

FAR RIGHT: Community leaders gather village children and adults to

discuss the importance of sanitation and hygiene.

35

Sri Kantibhai L. Bhandva, Assistant Teacher, Chatodar Primary School Only a year ago, people living behind our school used our compound wall and surroundings to relieve themselves. Students would arrive for class each day disgusted by the odor and ap-pearance of human waste. That was how they began their day. It has changed completely. We send our thanks to the Share & Care Founda-tion for being a supportive hand to our village people by providing toilet facilities.

Balaji Vanzara, Vanzarapura I work as a social leader in our community. We essentially live a nomadic life and set-

tled near the passage of the Sabarmati River. Before the toilets were constructed, we were forced to use this risky area, in the open. We have seen a change from the smallest kids to our elders, everyone is using their toilet with-out fear. We send our thanks to the Share & Care Foundation and our local volunteers for such valuable support.

Maheshbhai, President, Palanpur Taluka Panchayat and Bhutedi We always felt worried about people’s daily practice of open defecation. Nobody had the means to build their own toilet that cost more than Rs. 25,000 [approx. $390 USD], which can be a half year of someone’s annual earnings. The work by the Share & Care Foundation and our village has benefited us by adding a total of 88 toilets. Almost all beneficiaries are using them with love and care. Thanks.

We at Share & Care Foundation express our sincere

thanks to our partner NGO the Environmental San-

itation Institute, or ESI, for being an integral part of

our mission to create a world free from the health

issues and dangers of open defecation.

Now in our 35th year of bringing hope and sustainable change to rural India.42

1. Empower women with a com-prehensive approach that in-cludes education in banking, per-sonal finance, gender equality issues, and personal safety — as well as training in livelihood skills. Provide them with resources to succeed and become self-suffi-cient, such as seed money to start a trade, micro loans, and market linkages. Equip them with profes-sional tools and equipment such as sewing machines, embroidery machines, cosmetology chairs, or catering kits when applicable.

2. Cultivate a sense of community by enhancing the formation and continuation of self-help groups

in which empowered women help to empower others, there-fore continuing to enhance gen-der equality and equity in the society. Self-help groups are a proven modality to help bring economic empowerment to vari-ous parts of the world.

3. Develop programs in which gender equality and equity is-sues are addressed in society at large. Educate women about their rights within the society and create an economic environment in which there are equal opportu-nities for women in every sector. Grassroots programs are critical to ensuring women have oppor-

tunities not only to succeed, but also to utilize their success to empower others.

4. Provide personal safety education to all school-age children. By equipping chil-dren with this knowledge, we can lower the chances of men becoming perpetrators or by-standers of violence against women. Additionally, we will continue working with NGOs to provide adult women with education about basic person-al safety — including hands-on defense training about how to escape danger or fight back against violence when needed.

According to a 2007 National Child Abuse Study, 53% of India’s children have experi-enced some form of sexual abuse, and 54.5% of incest rape victims are children under 18 (NCRBI 2015). Although the government and other organizations have focused on improv-ing the quality of education and accessibility to all, the topic of sexuality remains a taboo, and there is very little done to empower chil-dren with essential life skills to keep them-selves safe.

Culturally, child sexual abuse occupies a unique space where it is both recognized (“it happens to others”) and denied (“it does not happen to my child or family members”). Too often, parents and caregivers lack the knowl-edge necessary to teach children vigilance or, in the case of violations, the understanding to support and comfort victims.

Addressing the ProblemShare & Care Foundation has decided to ad-dress the issue of child sexual abuse through our Women Empowerment Signature Program. We believe that when we are empowering women, we must address violence prevention and promote gender equality in addition to pro-moting livelihood. Providing this education at a young age, to both genders, is critical; while fe-males are more likely to be victims, males who receive this education will be less likely to be-come perpetrators or bystanders of violence.

Additionally, we recognize that the beneficia-ries of this program include not only children but also parents, teachers, and other members of the community.

Empowerment for All: Freedom From Child Sexual Abuse

Students show off colorful signs with the message: “Not my fault.” Preventing

feelings of guilt is key to addressing child sexual abuse.

44 Now in our 35th year of bringing hope and sustainable change to rural India.

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT

A Multifaceted ResponseChild sexual abuse is a violation of a child’s body and of the trust implicit in a caregiving relationship. Victims experience conflicting emotions — such as shock, shame, rage, con-fusion, and guilt — that can have a significant, lasting impact on how they see and experience the world. They may experience mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, addic-tion, suicidal thoughts, and/or post-traumatic stress disorder, which can continue to disrupt their lives throughout adulthood if not treated.

The negative impacts of sexual abuse call for a multifaceted response, and research shows that prevention programs and thera-peutic support have the potential to reduce abuse and heal its effects. With the help of a reputed NGO, we are able to reach thou-sands of children, adolescents, and adults and provide them with direct services to-ward prevention.

These services include age-appropriate per-sonal safety training for individuals and rele-vant stakeholders, long-term psychothera-

peutic support to adolescents who have been trafficked or sexually abused, and policy advo-cacy for systemic changes that will appropri-ately respond to the needs of children.

At the core of these services is the Personal Safety Education (PSE) program, which fo-cuses on empowering children with adequate knowledge, attitudes, and skills to prevent in-stances of abuse as well as to seek support when such an incident has occurred. This program is conducted in privately owned and government schools, in shelter homes and orphanages, and among highly vulnerable groups of children referred by local NGOs. Counseling is provided to victims as well as to children who have indulged in sexual misbe-havior, in order to prevent further offenses. Ed-ucation also involves awareness-building and skills enhancement for adults such as parents, teachers, and other caregivers to create strong safety and support networks around children in their respective environments.

Our ImpactShort-Term Impact:• 5% of children disclosed sexual abuse and

received support.

• Ongoing abuse stopped, and communi-cation channels have opened up between children and parents.

• Children have become advocates for teach-ing personal safety to other children.

Long-Term Impact:• 100% of children talked about the program

after attending it.

• 100% of children said they would want to at-tend the program again.

• 8% of children reported having faced an un-safe situation. (Among these, 90% were able to seek immediate help.)

These outcomes indicate that PSE plays a key role in the prevention and risk reduction of

abuse. Engaging in child protection with children and adults is critical, and our model educates different members of society in a way that is truly impactful. With support from generous donors, we aim to help our partner NGO expand the Per-sonal Safety Education program to reach over a million children and 24,000 adults over the next three years.

In Their Own WordsGrade IX StudentThe program taught my entire class and me the names of private body parts. They also taught us Articles [rights], which we did not know early — especially Article 34, which teaches us about the right to protection from sexual abuse. I feel it is very important for all of us to know. Nobody has ever taught us any of these things before.

Parent/Awareness Session AttendeeWe are aware of this issue through the media. However, the media have a tendency to leave the viewer with negative messages, but you have addressed the issue more appropriately,

thus leaving us feeling positive and with hope at the end of the session.

School AdministratorWhen I was nine, I was molested by my ma-ternal uncle, and I’ve lived with the guilt that it was my mistake. Following the session, I re-alized that it was not my fault, and I spoke up about the pain that had been silenced for so long. I called my uncle and spoke to him, and told him that what he did was wrong. Being able to do this made me feel confident. I was able to stand up without the burden of guilt on my shoulder.

We at Share & Care Foundation express our sincere

thanks to Arpan, our partner NGO, for being an inte-

gral part of our mission to create a world free from

child sexual abuse.

Interactive, age-appropriate discussions allow students to feel happy and comfortable throughout the program.

48 Now in our 35th year of bringing hope and sustainable change to rural India.

Good things do indeed start with a vision. The Share & Care Foundation has always believed in empowering rural India as a vehicle for change, and have sought established NGOs to reach out to the most vulnerable in rural Indi-an society — specifically, women and children. Our goal is to empower the defenseless with supportive programs that are sustainable over time. The approach to provide long-term im-pact is based on three action items:

1. To educate.

2. To empower.

3. To equip children and families in need with opportunities for employment.

Some of the most at-risk in the target area are dropouts. Over 40% of Indian students drop out before reaching eighth grade, and the numbers in rural areas are even higher.

Share & Care supports work with children from rural, tribal, and underserved areas, and equips them with the skills to lead productive lives.

Real Stories of Student Triumphs

Namita Adhikari, Sai Centre, MangaonNamita passed Std. X in June 2017 with 76.80%Namita was first enrolled in Project Anando when she was in Std. VIII. With the opportunity that Share & Care provided for her to achieve, she says that, “All my teachers have really worked hard for my academic progress as well as for my overall personality development.”

Originally, Namita was shy and lacked confi-dence. She would often choose to remain silent in class, but now she is outgoing and even has the self-assurance to express herself on stage.

The coaching she received in English and mathematics over the past three years has helped her secure good marks in Std. X, which she had found really difficult in the past. Namita is quick to share her appreciation, “I would really like to thank the Share & Care Foundation for supporting my education in all possible ways.”

Swarashree Thale, Nehuli Centre, AlibaugSwarashree passed Std. X in June 2017 with 79.60%Swarashee first became involved with Share & Care’s support when she was in Std. VIII. Swarashee says that the assistance and sup-port she received has helped her and her classmates express themselves and con-front their difficulties, and has become a real incentive to achieve. She has been involved in a number of different activities, including study-friendly educational programs and classes, Bal Kala Mahotsav (the National Children’s Festival of Indian Dance, Drama and Music held on Children’s Day), and the

receipt of educational materials to help her focus on improving her academic perfor-mance. She says, “The most important part of my education is that our teachers work tirelessly with us to build our confidence. I would like to thank the Share & Care Foun-dation for providing us with better opportu-nities to learn.”

Adarsh Sanjay Ware, Manora Centre, Washim District Adarsh passed Std. X in June 2017Adarsh dropped out of school because his par-ents could not afford his educational expens-es. With the support of the Share & Care Foun-dation, his parents were convinced to re-enroll him and were assured that all his educational requirements would be supported financially and backed by a dedicated teaching staff. It took some convincing, but finally his parents agreed to return him to school.

As promised, Adarsh received all required educational materials and benefited from the

Making College Education a Reality for Thousands of Underprivileged, Yet Brilliant, Young Scholars

2017 PROGRESS REPORT

EDUCATE 2 GRADUATE

53

Across India, thousands of young scholars have the desire, determination, and aptitude to attain a college education — but cannot af-ford the cost of tuition. In many cases, these individuals come from low-income families who have faced limited access to education and, subsequently, limited employment op-portunities, for generations.

The goal of our Educate 2 Graduate Signature Program is to make higher education a reality

for thousands of brilliant yet underprivileged scholars. By providing our beneficiaries with in-terest-free loan-scholarships, we can set these promising young adults (and their families) on a path to a secure future, free from the binds of poverty.

Together with our partner NGOs, we screen loan applicants and choose those who meet a rigid set of requirements based on aptitude, initiative, and financial need.

Providing Access to Higher Education:Opportunities for Brilliant but Needy Students

Loan-scholarship recipients with program directors convene in Chennai, the newest location of our E2G program.

54 Now in our 35th year of bringing hope and sustainable change to rural India.

E2G launched in Bharuch, Gujarat, in 2007 and has since expanded to include locations in Rajkot, Gujarat (added in 2009) and Chennai, Tamil Nadu (added in 2016). To date, we have helped 1,238 scholars achieve their dreams of higher education.

We’ve seen over the past decade that E2G has unlimited potential for growth, as the loan-scholarship model is designed to contin-ually add more scholars to our roster. And be-cause our support includes not only financial assistance but also mentorship and a sense

of community, our beneficia-ries often go on to become role models for their families and friends. An in-vestment in E2G is truly an invest-ment with unlim-ited returns.

In Their Own WordsKavitha, Stu-dent, Jaya Engi-neering CollegeIf I didn’t get the scholarship, I would not have

done engineering. Without the support, my family would have had to suffer severe hard-ships. After receiving the E2G scholarship, my father [burdened by lack of resources for tu-ition fees] became a lot more confident and so did I. I am relaxed now and focus all my at-tention and concentration on my studies. I am determined to become the best software en-gineer. I am thankful to Share & Care Founda-tion and Kalanjiyam for supporting me and my family when we most needed it.

Rohan, Student, MNM Jain College ThoraipakkamIt has been my dream to become a mechanical engineer, so I always worked hard in school to achieve high marks and gain admission to col-lege. Although I scored 81% in Class XII board exams, my family’s economic condition was not suitable to put me through an engineering course. It was a great dilemma — but then we heard about Share & Care’s E2G program from a family friend, and I applied for it. I was cho-sen to be supported with Rs. 40,000 [approx. $625 USD] per year toward my college fees, and I am now enrolled in a mechanical engi-neering course at MNM Jain College.

Abhishek Thanki, E2G GraduateWhat I have achieved today would not have been possible without this interest-free loan scholarship in the form of E2G. I am extremely thankful to Share & Care Foundation and Sister Nivedita Foundation for consistently providing support to students like me. There are thou-sands of students like me, waiting to achieve their dream and I hope they too can be helped!

Nikunj Gohel, E2G GraduateThanks to your generous support, I am the first in my family to attend college. Growing up in a less-privileged community has not only of-fered financial and academic challenges, but has also helped me realize the value of a col-lege education. Based on merit, I got admis-sion in M.S. University of Baroda, a reputed university in Gujarat in mechanical engineer-ing. I also received the scholarship from Share & Care and Higher Education Support Trust. After the completion of my degree, I secured a position with Tata Motors Limited, Sanand, and worked there for a year. I am now pursuing a master’s degree at the Indian Institute of Tech-nology Madras. I will always be grateful for the E2G scholarship.

To date, we have

helped 1,238 scholars

achieve their dreams of higher education.

EDUCATE 2 GRADUATE

55

Rahul Dhankara, E2G GraduateMy father works in a textile mill with an an-nual income of Rs. 70,000 [approx. $1,093 USD]. In spite of my family’s weak economic condition, my father, knowing the importance of education, told me to keep faith and nev-er quit my studies. I got admission at one of the best colleges of Gujarat and subsequent-ly a loan-scholarship from the E2G program, and successfully completed my degree with a high rank. I am currently working for the United Bank of Switzerland as an INFOSYS executive and am working hard for further success. My sincere thanks to Higher Education Support Trust and Share & Care Foundation.

Kajal Patel, E2G GraduateI come from Bapada, a remote village in Gu-jarat with a population of just 1,500. My father, who is illiterate, earned our family’s daily bread by working as a daily laborer in a diamond pol-

ishing firm. In school, I earned 91% marks in Grade 10 and 83% in Grade 12, then received admission to a reputed government dental college at Jamnagar. However, it wasn’t until I read a note in a local newspaper about Share & Care’s E2G program that I realized it might be possible to pursue my dream of attend-ing college. My application for a scholarship was approved, and I have now completed my B.D.S. studies. Next, I hope to attain a master’s degree and not only become self-reliant, but also help my family and serve the poor.

We at Share & Care Foundation express our sin-cere thanks to Higher Education Support Trust, Sister Nivedita Foundation, and Kalanjiyam Trust, our partner NGOs, for being an integral part of our mission to create a world where ev-eryone has access to education.

E2G recipients and their families gather to discuss the program.

YOUNG PROFESSIONAL COMMITTEE

The members of Share & Care Foundation’s Young Professional Committee (YPC) work together to serve as catalysts for change lo-cally as well as internationally. These talented individuals advance our mission of empowering marginalized people in India with the es-sential human rights of education, healthcare, and gender equality. They raise awareness and engage others to become supporters of these social causes.

We invite YOU to join the committee, where you will play a key role in the growth of our organization — and help to improve thousands of lives every year.

Our YPC leaders for 2017 and 2018 are Megan Kothari and Aditi Vyas and you can reach out to them by emailing [email protected]. Below is a message from Aditi.

Letter from AditiFrom volunteering with autistic children to spending time at an or-phanage in Kathmandu, Nepal, charity has always been an integral part of my life. During college, I planned philanthropy events (which went on to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation) and studied international economic relations, with a fo-cus on Asia. I now serve as the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Young Professional Committee.

My choice to volunteer with Share & Care Foundation was an obvious one. Not only am I the third generation of my family to be involved with SFC, but my grandfather Dr. Pramod Vyas actually gave the or-ganization one of their first checks — and designed their first logo!

What strikes me most about SCF is how effectively they work with grassroots-level organizations in South Asia. Individuals involved at the ground level are thoroughly vetted, and donors know exactly how their contributions are used. I am excited to be part of the orga-nization and look forward to helping advance its mission!

Best, Aditi

70 Now in our 35th year of bringing hope and sustainable change to rural India.

The Share & Care AdvantageAs Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Through observation and personal experience, we know this to be true.

The knowledge we’ve gained over the past three decades continuously strengthens our ability to help thousands of India’s most marginalized individuals. Likewise, the resources we provide our beneficiaries help to cultivate a cycle of self-sufficiency in their communities — ensuring that each dollar you donate will have a lasting impact.

We have identified the four most essential and basic needs of our beneficiaries — Healthcare, Education, Women Empowerment, and Sanitation & Hygiene.

We have individually designed our programs for specific causes and tailored them to the needs of the communities, thereby ensuring that they will be effective and sustainable.

We are the means for you to live out a charitable lifestyle and make a difference in the fields that are most meaningful to you personally.

What Sets Share & Care Apart? Our Volunteers consist of dedicated professionals from various fields who work tirelessly to fund and advance our innovative programs.

We are financially responsible and transparent. We maintain a primarily volunteer-run operation with low overhead costs and strive to achieve the maximum yield on your investments.

We use a holistic approach. By partnering with local NGOs who know the needs and customs of the people we serve, we can ensure that our programs will be effective. We also aim for all of our programs to become self-reliant within three to five years.

Our research and reporting methods guarantee that our programs are effective and have significant impact with measurable results. Our on-the-ground partners continually monitor the efficacy of our programs.

We are trustworthy and recognizable. Share & Care is one of only a few foundations in the United States recognized by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Why Give to Share & Care Foundation?
