The time has come to report to themembers on the state of theAssociation. I am happy to report thatthe state is a very good one. Ourcontributors have increased by 26%this last year and the number ofcontributors continues to grow.

The Scholarship Fund has metwith resounding success, and we were, able to award five scholarships of$2000 each this year. Four of thescholarships were made possible

through the generosity of the classes of1957 and 1967 who took up the challengeof the class of 1956. We hope that otherclasses will do likewise and makeSponsored Scholarships a part of theirreunion plans. A major part of theAssociation’s mission is to lend a handto those students who come after us.

The Hall of Fame will be honoringnew inductees this year. There will be14 new honorees, and we are pleasedto be paying homage to such fine representatives of BHS.

We are looking forward to a grandturn-out of alumni at the “3rd Weekendin September” festivities, both at thegathering at the high school and theAlumni booth at the Brentwood Park"Brentwood Days" celebration. A trip down Memory Lane.......RESTAURANTS AND CONFECTIONARY STORES KNOWNBY STUDENTS AROUND BRENTWOOD OVER THE YEARS

Do you remember some of these places? The VillageInn near Bremerton and Litzsinger, Foot Long Hotdog(now Carl's), much loved Velvet Freeze on Brentwoodacross from the now City Hall parking lot; Frosty Manoron Brentwood near Madge; The Hitching Post onManchester.....Cottage Inn across from Posch's DrugStore; Posch's had a great fountain in the 40's;Hounsom's Drug Store on Manchester and Kleisly's atBridgeport and Brentwood Blvd. had nice fountains, too.And in the vicinity of Eager Road, how about BelvedereJoe's? Class of 1941 had a 5th reunion there (NormaHodges Murphy '41 reports that many, including herstepfather and the then mayor of Brentwood, hung outthere).... the Trio Restaurant. Van Horn's on Litzsinger(remember the beautiful carpeted stairway?), whereMount Calvary Lutheran Church now is located. Andthen there was Caruso's with its great pizzas, studentsworked there part time (even Elvis Presley and hisentourage stopped there one night); the Chili Houseacross Manchester from Caruso's and Buckingham'sChicken on Manchester. Another was Hy's Drive In,which reportedly had the best cheeseburgers. It wasowned by the father of Judy Heynen Robinson '59.

There was a great little confectionary on Brentwoodacross from the City Hall, where Brentwood No. 1 stu-dents visited frequently. It had several steps up to thefront door. (Does anyone remember the name?) Therewas a Bick's Confectionary somewhere, too. Then therewere places in Rock Hill and Richmond Heights, visitedby BHS students all the time.....Nahm's Nook, Blase's(hamburgers with slaw was their specialty), two Steak 'nShakes (on Brentwood Blvd. and on Manchester), andRedwood near Steak 'n Shake on Brentwood.

TEACHERS’ CORNER

Editor's Note: The following isa condensation of the profilethat appeared in the October2007 issue of THE EAGLE'SNEST, the newsletter written byBarbara Bond Simon for theBrentwood High Class of 1959.

Coach Bill Long

When Bill Long came to teach and coach atBrentwood High in 1953, this 27-year-old with the NorthCarolina drawl already had led a full life. And after retiring,he had a couple of more careers, albeit less lengthy ones.

"Coach," as students and faculty alike called him fordecades, had been a Depression Era orphan. He wentinto the Navy out of high school in 1942 and served onthe submarine USS Swordfish in the Pacific Theater. There, Lt. Long led a team of frogmen who worked underwater clearing detonators out of mines and disassemblingnets being used by the Japanese to ensnare Allied troopships. Bill was on Iwo Jima before the invasion actuallybegan. His mission was to find and map the locations ofthe Japanese munitions dumps. During one spying mission,

he encountered an enemy soldier. His ability at wrestlingis the reason Bill won that battle and was able to save hisown life. He was on the battleship USS Missouri whenthe atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, ending the war.Afterwards, Adm. William (Bull) Halsey personallypinned a medal on his chest.

One of Bill's war adventures was movie-plot stuff. Hehad been rescued from a raft in enemy waters by a swiftboat commander. That man came to St. Louis in 1960 aspresidential candidate John F. Kennedy. When JFK sawCoach in the crowd on his campaign stop, he asked if theyhad met previously. "Yes, sir, we have," Long replied inhis North Carolina drawl. Kennedy then remembered. "Iwent flying through there, trying to pick you up," he saidof bringing Coach into that now-famous PT-109.

Long, after getting his bachelor's from AppalachianState, and his MBA from Washington University, came toBrentwood to teach eighth grade combination and tocoach freshman football, basketball and track.

Oh, and he somehow found Anne Gordon at a Sundaynight church service. They were married Christmas Day1954 and spent 52 years together. Anne died two yearsago. "I don't have the words to describe how beautiful mywife was.

I had learned a lot about life in the orphanage, but mywife taught me how to live in a home. We raised threechildren, and we did it together." After retiring, Billworked for nine years as a member of the FootballCardinals' equipment staff. He could be found at eachhome game as a member of the "chain gang."
