However, in the interests of safety, it is important that our K-2 children are picked up by you or your nominated carer.

Kindergarten News Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)This term, KB have been learning all about blends within our spelling program. During literacy groups, KB have enjoyed constructing words and sentences based on the weekly blend focus. We have used letter bean bags, unfix cubes and dice to help us construct new words. KB then opened up their writing books and got creative with some blend focus sentences.

“SH - Shelly went on the ship. She shared her sea shells.”Caitlin R

“CH - Chilly was very hungry so she chopped some chocolate up and ate some cheese”Emmeline G

Ching! Ching! Year 1 have been visited by banking superheroes who taught many valuable lessons about money. We explored the value and design of Australian coins and notes. Students determined the difference between needs and wants when thinking about what they can use money for. We followed a narrative that helped us practise purchasing and finding correct change. Students learned about the importance of keeping money safe.

Year 1 loved learning about banking!

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4) Stage 3 News (Year 5 & 6)This week, 5A have been looking at the work of Romero Britto. He is a Brazilian artist inspired by the cubist work of Picasso, as well as pop art and graffiti art. His work incorporates 2D shapes based on everyday scenes. These are a few of our finished masterpieces.

This week, 4C started their unit on descriptive writing. We discussed the types of words that help us to create vivid images in our readers' minds. We are excited to continue to explore different elements of figurative imagery throughout the unit and start to use some fantastic adjectives and other literary techniques to develop our writing.

We started the unit by playing some vocabulary games that included Bananagrams, Articulate, Taboo and Apples to Apples that encouraged us to use lots of adjectives and different words in order to win!

Science and Technology NewsScientist of the Month:

As we near the end of May, a new Scientist of the Month will be in next week’s newsletter. Keep your eyes peeled and remember to email your answers to Mrs Keeling.

Science Awards:

This week in assemblies, the following students received a special Science Award from the Science teachers.

These awards go to the students who we feel stand out in their Science lessons. This may be for their ability to share in scientific discussions, hypothesise and offer considered predictions for various experiments, as well as demonstrate an ability to apply their learning to a new context outside of the classroom.

We would like to congratulate these students for their effort and enthusiasm in science:

Year 1: Zach H (1D)Year 2: Julian H (2H)Year 3: Jackson W (3G)Year 4: Raiden N (4M)Year 5: Siddharth G (5T)Year 6: Ethan R (6F)

STEAM Fun:

The Week 3 newsletter had a family fun challenge - The Marshmallow Challenge. Here are some of the creations from Neutral Bay families.

The record to beat was 65 centimetres, held by a group of students in 5B. The structure stayed upright and unassisted for the duration of the lesson.

Julius (1M) and family created a tower 57 centimetres tall! What a great effort!

Sophia (1T) and family created a structure 125 centimetres high, using 24 sticks of spaghetti. The structure stayed up for about 10 seconds before swaying and snapping. Well done, Sophia and family!

Neutral Bay Public School are annual participants in the Premier’s Spelling Bee, which is a state-wide spelling competition that encourages students to become passionate about words, to learn the art of spelling and to expand their vocabulary and knowledge of the English language.

This year, we have decided not to send home a paper booklet of the word lists this year for environmental reasons. Instead, we emailed the relevant details to all parents of students in Years 4-6.

The current Spelling Bee word lists and information are available from the NSW Government Arts Unit website: https://www.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/premiers-spelling-bee

The word lists are password protected. For copyright reasons, we are not allowed to give out the password on the school website so this password was emailed to all parents of Years 4-6 students last week. • The Junior Simple Word Lists are for students in

Year 4 (Levels 1-5)• The Senior Simple Word Lists are for students in

Years 5 & 6 (Levels 2-6)

All students in Years 4-6 are encouraged to take part and make it a challenge to learn new words each week.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee grade finals will be held next term. These dates will be published in the School Newsletter. How many words will your child master?

Netball Reports Week 4 2019B TeamEven from the warm up, the B Team were focused and ready to go. We were full of determination and wanted to start as soon as possible. Special mention to Evie M (6K) for hurting her ankle slightly, but still kept going through the pain. Even though everyone played really well, the player of the match has to go to Georgina M (6M) for amazing catching of some tricky passes. She played really well and should be proud of herself. Even though we lost, I think that we played really well against a hard team. We would be happy to play them again.Written by Juliet P (6M)

C TeamThe C Team started the game with a bang! We played against Cammeray and everyone tried so hard. Amelia C (6S) and Phoebe S (6F) both played astonishingly well, but the player of the match goes to Sophie F (6M) for defending and attacking brilliantly. We need to work on our defending, shooting and stepping. The final score was 4-16 to Cammeray, but we are determined to up our game.Written by Rose B-P (5N)

D1 Team3,2,1, the whistle blew, the ball went back and forth for a while, until it went through our hoop. This made my day, but I had to stay focused because we had more goals to score. A special mention to Abbey M (6K) for great goalkeeping. After a while, we had scored 7 more goals to bring it to 8-0 by half time. The siren blew, it was half time. It was a very competitive game, but we came out with a win of 19-1. The player of the match is Penny L (6M).Written by Janae R (6K)

D2 TeamThe whistle blew! It was the D2’s centre first, and the score was 1-0 to Neutral Bay. Next, it was Mowbray’s turn at centre, we still managed to get the ball and score another goal. The overall score was 8-4 to Neutral Bay. The D2 team played exceptionally well. The player of the match has to go to Jodhi H (6K) for her amazing job at attacking. Next time, we should try and work on our mid-court playing.Written by Audrey T (6M)

E TeamDespite the gloomy afternoon weather, the E Team was determined to win. Lane Cove started with the ball, passed it down to the hoop and scored, again and again. By half time they were winning 6-0. In the second half we had made a huge comeback, but unfortunately, it was not big enough to bring home the win. We ended up losing 7-5 to Lane Cove. The player of the match is Emma F (6F) for being so mature in admitting that she was injured in the second half. We need to work on sticking with our players.Written by Victoria B (6P)

Boys TeamWe were ready to play Lane Cove West and they were very good. We lost 7-15, their way. We should work on sticking to our players. Player of the match goes to Daniel B (6S). Even though he was off for half the match, he still scored 3 goals.Written by Hamish J (5A)

The Canteen Team

Canteen NewsThank you to all our KM volunteers last week. This week, we have KSV followed by 2C next week. We desperately need help on Thursday and Friday next week, so if there is any chance you can sign up for those days that would be wonderful (especially the 9am-11am slots). Remember, you will receive a free lunch, a warm cup of tea or coffee and hopefully see your child at service. May we remind all volunteers to have their hair tied back and wear closed toe shoes please (no thongs or open toe sandals). Also, please remember to sign in at the office and receive your visitors' lanyard before arriving at the canteen.

Uniform Shop NewsNearly New Uniform ShopHas Marie Kondo inspired you to spark some joy and declutter your house? Have your kids outgrown their clothes but they are still in excellent condition? By donating your pre-loved school uniforms to Neutral Bay Public School, they will get a new lease on life, while supporting the school. More importantly, it will reduce the amount of clothing heading to the landfill, which has a significant impact on the environment.

For donations, please put items in a bag and drop them off in the box beside the School Office reception desk. It's labelled for uniform donations and has a slot large enough to fit your drop offs. Neutral Bay Public School needs your good quality uniforms ahead of our upcoming sales, planned on the following dates:

• Thursday 6 June• Wednesday 3 JulyFor those who ordered long sleeve white polos in the last week or so, we are expecting a delivery of these shirts next week. Orders will be delivered as soon as possible after the new stock arrives. Thanks for your patience.
