ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of songs in Spanish by music therapists

according to song suggestions within music therapy Facebook groups. A content analysis of 84

posts and 487 comments from two music therapy Facebook groups was completed. A total of

304 songs in Spanish, 75 artists, 23 genres, and 32 resources were identified. Suggestions were

aimed at a variety of age groups, and for hospital, hospice, and unspecified settings. Music

therapy professionals are using and looking for suggestions of music in Spanish to use with their

Spanish-speaking clients. Further research is needed to develop repertoire lists aimed at Spanish-

speaking clients to assist music therapy professionals and students working with these

populations, as well as music therapists’ use of social media platforms for collaboration and

sharing of information.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Between the years 2005 and 2011 the percentage of individuals who spoke Spanish

language in the United States grew from 12% to 12.9% of the total population (Ryan, 2011). As

of 2018 the Hispanic population in the United States was 59.9 million, representing 18.3% of the

total population (Alonzo, 2019). This number is projected to nearly double by the year 2060

(Vespa, Medina, & Armstrong, 2020). Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare’s 2019 Community

Health Needs Assessment Report showed that cultural and linguistic competence is an important

aspect of what healthcare means to the Latino population in the area, but cultural and linguistic

competence is also considered a barrier to accessing healthcare (2019). The American Music

Therapy Association (AMTA) Professional Competencies (AMTA, 2013) include demonstrating

knowledge and respect for all cultural backgrounds and awareness of the influence of race and

ethnicity on the therapeutic process. Lack of cultural competence may result in Hispanic

individuals not receiving appropriate care, even in music therapy services (Vandervoort, 2017).

Therefore, it is important for music therapists to be aware of their clients’ cultural background

and to be competent in interacting with a culture other than their own.

While the use of songs is only one aspect of making music therapy relevant to a specific

culture, having a repertoire appropriate for Hispanic or Spanish speaking cultures is an important

step to take when striving to provide culturally competent services for Spanish speaking clients.

Research on song repertoire used by music therapists seems to be mostly focused on geriatric or

older client populations, corresponding with the aging Baby Boomer population (Vespa, 2020).

Studies have primarily focused on songs used in hospice care (Cevasco & VanWeelden, 2009;

Pierce, 2011; VanWeelden & Cevasco, 2007, 2009), with only one study focusing on Mexican

families with family members in hospice care (McQueen, 2017). The growing Spanish-speaking

population in the US, along with the limited research on use of songs in Spanish by music

therapists, suggests that there is a need for research about this population, particularly in regard

to appropriate repertoire. Current and relevant repertoire in Spanish would allow music therapists

professionals and students to prepare to meet the needs of a wider range of clients (Stock, 2009;

Goelst, 2016). Cahoon (2018) found that, while music therapists felt prepared to work with a

2

diverse clientele after graduation, most stated they did not have a specific class addressing

multicultural competence.

Social media websites like Facebook have been useful for music therapists to ask

questions, share resources, advertise businesses, advocate for the profession, and networking

with other professionals (Bates, 2014). Over 70 Facebook groups have been created in the last

decade for music therapy professionals and students to easily interact, share information, and ask

questions to the community within those groups (Murakami, 2020). In fact, social media sources

like blogs have become an accepted way for music therapists to share information and

collaborate (Robertson, 2016). However, there does not appear to be any research on how music

therapists share information about songs in Spanish. Identifying what repertoire is being used in

clinical settings may be helpful to music therapy students and instructors in repertoire

development (Standley & Jones, 2007). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate

the use of songs in Spanish by music therapists according to song suggestions within music

therapy Facebook groups. Specifically, this study aimed to analyze content regarding songs in

Spanish found in music therapy Facebook groups and create a list of songs suggestions, along

with details of the type of population the songs have been used with. The research questions

were as follows:

1. What songs in Spanish, artists, and genres are being suggested within music

therapy Facebook groups to be used with Spanish-speaking clients?

2. What are the specific populations and age groups the songs are being used with?

3. What resources regarding songs in Spanish are being shared within the music

therapy Facebook groups?

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Use of Patient Preferred Music in Music Therapy

Individual client preference is thought to be the most important factor in ensuring music

will have the desired effect (Standley & Jones). Standley and Jones (2007) considered relevant

song choice and musically sophisticated presentation to be important. Familiar or preferred

music is considered best practice over new music when selecting appropriate music for

procedural support music therapy, and familiar/preferred music is thought to carry positive

associations and improve mood and enjoyment (Yinger et al., 2014). Music therapists from the

United States and various European countries were surveyed and interviewed about the music

therapy profession in their respective countries (Osher, 2012). These music therapists considered

music styles that patients preferred as the most beneficial. Chason (2014) surveyed college

students who observed excerpts of music therapists’ live performances of familiar popular songs.

Their overall preference of the music therapists’ performances seemed to be more related to their

perceptions of the music therapists’ singing and expressiveness than to the performance’s

similarity to the original recorded song. The author noted that while clients in a music therapy

session may be more forgiving than participants in the study, music therapists should aim for the

best performance quality and presence to promote better outcomes with clients. Music selections

that produce emotional reactions, such as chills, shivers, tears, and crying, are considered by

individuals to have higher meaningfulness than music selections that do not produce emotional

reactions or music associated with laughter or smiling (Craig, 2009).

Bruestle (2015) compared physiological measures of arousal and perceived relaxation in

undergraduate students before and after listening to preferred general music selections, preferred

relaxing music selections, or non-preferred music. The author found that perceived relaxation

increased within both preferred general music and preferred relaxing music groups and decreased

in the non-preferred music group. Interestingly, physiological measures showed a decrease in

arousal among the three groups. Although the author acknowledged their study did not reflect a

music therapy session, they suggested their study supports the use of patient preferred music in

music therapy. They also suggested the use of verbal feedback and behaviors form the patient to

4

determine effectiveness of music for relaxation. Significant positive correlation was found

between music preference and degree of perceived relaxation among music therapists and

healthy adult groups, as well as between familiarity with the music and perceived relaxation in

healthy adults (Tan et al., 2012). Music therapists can assist older cardiac rehabilitation patients

in selecting individualized music to promote participation in healthy physical activity (Clark et

al., 2016). The authors emphasized that credentialed music therapists are especially equipped for

this because of their knowledge of physiological and subjective considerations in designing

music listening interventions.

Patients who completed physical therapy exercises with preferred recorded music seemed

to present with similar heart rate averages, reduced pain, increased total capacity of exercise, and

increased enjoyment during exercise, although differences were not significant when compared

to the control group without music (Piercy, 2008). Patient preferred recorded music in this study

consisted of playlist of one hour of music created based on the patient’s favorite songs listed

prior to the beginning of the study. Music preferences of asthma patients seemed to be linked to

not only personality, sex, age, and mood of listeners, but also the nature of symptoms and

periodic exacerbation (Sliwka et al., 2018). The use of recorded music may be more beneficial

than live music when addressing communication and counseling need of older adults with mild

to moderate dementia (Selvarajah, 2013). However, both preferred recorded music and preferred

live music were effective at reducing problem behaviors and increasing positive behaviors in

individuals with dementia during assisted bathing, compared to no music during the procedure

(Hagerty, 2015). For procedures that may intrude on a patient’s privacy, the author suggested

recorded music should be used first and that live music to be introduced later if recorded music

not was effective upon assessment.

Patient preferred live music was significantly more effective than patient preferred

recorded music and baseline measurements in eliciting alert states of hospice patients who were

not responding to vocal stimulation (Segall, 2007). Patient preferred live music seemed to be

effective for improving mood and pain in patients on a cardiovascular unit (Selle & Silverman,

2017). In Ferrer’s (2007) study, patients who received familiar live music during chemotherapy

treatment showed significant improvement on measures of anxiety, fear, fatigue, relaxation, and

diastolic blood pressure when compared to a control group that did not have music therapy

during treatment. No significant differences in heart rate and systolic blood pressure were found.

5

Selle and Silverman (2020) investigated patient perceptions of music therapy through

patient preferred live music. They identified four themes within patient responses about the

benefits of patient preferred live music. This intervention was perceived as: 1) providing comfort

and relaxation in the hospital, 2) reducing challenging experiences of anxiety, boredom and loss

of control, 3) evoking memories and connecting to the past, and 4) providing human connection

and emotional support. The author’s suggested that the live performance may be a more

significant factor than a patient’s preference of a specific song in the therapeutic impact of the

music presented. While Robb’s (2003) contextual support model focused on increase coping

behaviors in stressful hospitalizations, Selle and Silverman (2020) argued that it applied to music

selection in that the elements of structure, autonomy, and involvement are also inherent

components in patient-preferred live music.

Cultural Competency in Music Therapy

An international survey of music therapy practice asked participants about the importance

and impact of a global music therapy certificate (Kern & Tague, 2017). Among the pros of a

global music therapy certificate, respondents mentioned that it would help with understanding

cultural and social impacts of music. Other respondents mentioned a need for respect of cultural

traditions and practices from all regions of the world as a possible issue. Music therapists have a

unique opportunity through music to make client’s and families’ culture a part of sessions and

their healthcare (Field, 2014; Goelst, 2016). Field (2014) considered that developing one’s

cultural competency as a clinician is a first step that facilitates supervision of music therapy

interns in regard to cultural issues. Surveyed hospice music therapists mentioned multicultural

issues such as culture and religion difference in end of life care come up in their practice

(Wolverton, 2012). As part of the assessment process, music therapists are encouraged to realize

their own cultural bias and preferences in music choices, and to identify cultural influences in the

client’s music preferences (Hanser, 2018).

Hadley and Norris (2016) believed that by becoming skillful in music from various

cultures without first becoming socially and politically aware regarding culture, music therapists

may contribute to client’s cultural stress, harm the therapeutic relationship and hinder the

therapeutic process. They further explained to become a culturally competent music therapist,

three steps in transformational learning are necessary: 1) self-awareness, 2) cultural knowledge,

6

and 3) development of culturally relevant skills. They stated that transformational learning must

begin prior to gaining musical cultural competencies to avoid using instruments or musical forms

inappropriately. Hadley and Norris (2016) also noted that music therapy training programs often

require students to have training in Western classical music, and that efforts to teach

multicultural music are sometimes limited to a single course, given by an instructor that does not

pertain to the cultures the music originates from.

Moreno (1988) stated “Remembering that no one music is a universal language, this

writer believes that music therapists should have a general familiarity and working knowledge of

the music of representative world culture areas” (p. 18). They suggest that, similar to learning

basic foreign words or phrases to communicate and build rapport with someone who speaks a

different language, music therapists should have the ability to use musical languages from other

cultures to achieve similar goals. International music therapy students may experience higher

levels of acculturative stress (Kim, 2011). Language barriers and cultural distance affect stress

and education of international music therapy students. Survey respondents indicated that English

language proficiency in academic settings, social situations and daily life was the most

significant source of stress. This may indicate that incorporating repertoire in languages other

than English within music therapy training may also beneficial for international students,

particularly if music in their native language is used.

Need for Songs in Spanish in Music Therapy Repertoire

Musical repertoire building was considered the most helpful aspect of music therapy

curriculum among surveyed hospice music therapists (Wolverton, 2012). Fifty-three percent of

respondents in this study also considered that musical repertoire should receive more emphasis in

college coursework. Goelst (2016) developed a manual on culture sensitivity in music therapy

practice, with suggestions about music therapy techniques that would best promote responses

from clients of African American, Asian American, Latina/o, Arab American, and LGBTQ

cultures. The author suggested music therapists should have repertoire in Spanish ready to use

and should become familiar with traditional and popular songs from the different ethnicities

within Latino culture. They also suggested one of the biggest issue when working with Latino

clients is language barrier.

7

Baker and Grocke (2009) suggested that building repertoire in other languages should be

emphasized in music therapy training programs and that it should be part of the competencies of

the Australian Music Therapy Association. In their study, survey respondents identified factors

that impacted their rapport building with culturally and linguistically diverse clients including

language barriers, cultural empathy, uneasiness when speaking in English among some cultural

groups, use of culturally appropriate greetings and use of words in the clients’ native language

(Baker & Grocke, 2009). These survey respondents indicated that they would use non-language

activities to compensate when language barriers affected their rapport with their clients (Baker &

Grocke, 2009). They found an incidence of 20% of songs in languages other than English among

Australian music therapists. The authors found surprising that VanWeelden and Cevasco’s

(2007) study, which was focused in the United States, had a smaller incidence of 2% songs in

languages other than English (Baker & Grocke, 2009).

Stock (2009) found that bilingual music therapy resulted in higher improvement scores

than English-only music therapy in expressive language in children learning English. Stock

(2009) pointed to the Silverman and Hairston (2005) and Silverman (2007) studies to support the

use of bilingual music therapy in clinical practice. In both studies, over 80% of respondents

reported they were not bilingual, while 40% in Silverman & Hairston (2005) and 58.2% in

Silverman (2007) reported working with non-English speaking clients. Silverman (2005)

considered it an advantage to be a bilingual therapist because of the growing non-English

speaking population in the United States. Moreno (1988) stated that music therapists should learn

the basics of a variety of musical languages and traditions to apply them in clinical practice, and

that these can be quickly learned. While Stock (2009) considers Moreno’s (1988) suggestion of

having basic knowledge of a wide variety or representative world music genres to be a noble

goal, they suggest therapists should focus on the predominant minority cultures that they may

serve most often.

Music promotes language exposure and development in the NICU (Standley &

Walworth, 2010). Results of research of a protocol for sustained live or recorded music

intervention, used for infants at least 28 weeks of gestational age, indicated a preference for the

use of the infant’s native language to promote language development (Standley & Walworth,

2010). The authors pointed out that lullabies of all cultures promote language development and

meet criteria necessary to be used with premature infants (Standley & Walworth, 2010). Music

8

therapy genre repertoire recommendations from top hit charts were used to generate genre list for

a study of the use of patient preferred music during ambulance transport (Myers, 2013). Genre

recommendations for songs in Spanish could better inform this type of research by broadening

the scope of patient preferred music available. McQueen (2017) surveyed the families of hospice

patients from Spanish speaking countries who received music therapy and found that 42%

considered that music therapists’ use of American music to be not important, and 78%

considered the use of music from their home country to be very important. Interestingly,

Komiyama (2005) suggests some clients and students born outside of the United States may be

acculturated to American or traditional Western music and that music educators and music

therapists should make sure to assess for clients’ and students’ preferences for a variety of styles

of music instead of assuming a preference for music of their native countries. While

Komiyama’s (2005) study focused on clients from Asian cultures, music therapists’ working

with Spanish-speaking clients should remember to assess clients individually to determine their

level of preference for music from their country of origin, music from other Spanish-speaking

countries, and music from outside of the clients culture.

Use of Social Media in the Music Therapy Profession

Music therapists share information through blog, podcasts, Facebook Groups, LinkedIn,

Pinterest, Skype, YouTube, e-books, online journals, and other methods (Wheeler, 2015). Before

the creation of some of those popular websites, Johnson et al. (2003) studied the effectiveness of

internet search engines to provide access to appropriate information about music therapy.

Possible interactions opportunities for music therapists on social media networking sites may

include clients, students, interns, employers, other professionals, and general public (Wheeler,

2015). Blog posts about music therapy research seemed to produce an overall improvement in

primary care giver’s awareness of music therapy services in the neonatal intensive care unit

(Robertson, 2016). Although the author did not find music therapy blogs aimed at subspecialty

physicians, they acknowledged the existing music therapy blogs about research, business

development, and current trends in music therapy practice.

Using YouTube as a networking site may be beneficial to the music therapy profession,

be it by using links to videos on professional websites or by using videos for teaching and

presenting about music therapy (Gooding & Gregory, 2011; Gregory & Gooding, 2013).

9

Thoughtful use of social media websites and care for the accuracy of content is emphasized

(Gregory and Gooding, 2012; Johnson et al., 2003). A study about music therapists’ use of

Facebook groups was not found in the literature; however an analysis of a closed Facebook

group of occupational therapists showed that professionals use the group for collaboration,

sharing knowledge, and social support (Sheffield, 2019). Given the lack of information on how

music therapists use social media platforms, the purpose of this study was to investigate the use

of songs in Spanish by music therapists on the social media platform Facebook. Spanish song

suggestions posted in music therapy Facebook groups were analyzed for content along with

details of the type of population the songs have been used with. The research questions were as

follows:

10

CHAPTER 3

METHODS

Facebook Groups

The author reviewed four Facebook groups for possible inclusion in the analysis. They

were: 1) Latin MT Network Community, 2) Music in Spanish: Resources for Music Therapists, 3)

Music Therapists of California, and 4) Sunshine State Music Therapists. In order for a Facebook

group to be considered for this paper the groups had to: 1) be used by music therapy

professionals and students, 2) be focused on the use of Spanish or on a geographical area where

music therapists may encounter a larger number of Hispanic clients, and 3) contain posts about

songs in Spanish. Although the Latin MT Network Community group contained information

relevant to music therapy practice with Hispanic clients, it was excluded from this paper because

the administrator of the group directed users to the Music in Spanish: Resources for Music

Therapists group if they had questions about repertoire (Latin American Music Therapy

Network, 2018). The Music Therapists of California did not have any posts about music in

Spanish. Therefore, the Facebook groups included in the analysis were Music in Spanish:

Resources for Music Therapists, and Sunshine State Music Therapists.

These Facebook groups were set as “private” and “visible”. When a Facebook group is

set as “private”, it means only users who are members of the group can see what was posted in

the group and what other users are members of that group. To be a member of a private group,

you must use an active Facebook profile or page, and must request to be a member by clicking

the “join” button next to the group’s name. When a Facebook group is set as “visible”, it means

any user who searches for the group can find it and ask to join as a member. I was a member of

both groups at the beginning of this study.

Procedure

A descriptive analysis of Facebook posts in two Facebook groups was conducted to

analyze content regarding songs in Spanish found in music therapy Facebook groups. The

groups, Music in Spanish: Resources for Music Therapists and Sunshine State Music Therapists,

were accessed through the mobile version of the website using the desktop Safari 13 web

11

browser software on a MacBook Pro computer. Using the mobile version of the website hid

irrelevant features of the website, such as side bars, and made the posts the main feature visible,

facilitating the process of reviewing the content within the groups. To avoid potential issues with

access to internet connection, I scrolled through each group until all post from 2015 and later

were visible and used the “Export as PDF…” feature on the web browser for offline access to the

groups. This resulted in two PDF files with previews of each post with some functional links.

Posts previews that were considered for this paper were accessed through the links in the PDF

files. All comments within a post were made visible and the “Export as PDF…” feature was used

for offline access to posts and comments within each post.

Inclusion Criteria

Posts were included in the analysis if the original poster (OP) requested suggestions of

songs in Spanish or suggested a song in Spanish. Included posts also had to be posted between

January 1st, 2015 and April 30th, 2020. Posts in which the OP specified that the songs were not

going to be used in a music therapy setting were excluded. Posts were also excluded if the OP’s

intended use of the songs was unclear or ambiguous.

Data Analysis

For posts that requested songs, the following information was analyzed:

• Link to original post

• Facebook group where it was published

• Date it was published

• Population and/or setting for which the OP intended to use the songs

• Format in which they intended to use the songs (live, recorded, specific

instrument, printed, etc.)

• Genre the OP requested

• Country of origin of the clients for whom the OP intended to use the songs

• Songs the OP mentioned in their request (“songs similar to…”)

• Type of intervention for which the OP intended to use the songs

• Type of theme the OP requested

• Total number of comments in the post

12

• Song titles suggested in the comments

• Artists suggested in the comments

• Genres or styles suggested in the comments

• Interventions to use a song with suggested in the comments

• Populations and/or settings with whom a commenter had used a song before

• Websites or tools suggested in the comments

For posts that suggested songs, the following information was analyzed:

• Link to original post

• Facebook group where it was published

• Date it was published

• Total number of comments in the post

• Song titles suggested in the post and/or comments

• Artists suggested in the post and/or comments

• Genres or styles suggested in the post and/or comments

• Interventions to use a song with suggested in the post and/or comments

• Populations and/or settings with whom the OP and/or commenter had used a song

before

• Websites or tools suggested in the post and/or comments

13

CHAPTER 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

A total of 84 posts and 487 comments were analyzed in this paper. Only one post (1.2%)

and three comments (0.6%) were from the Sunshine State Music Therapists group, while 83

posts (98.8%) and 484 comments (99.4%) were from the Music in Spanish: Resources for Music

Therapists group. There were 45 posts (53.6%) in which the original poster (OP) requested songs

and 39 posts (46.4%) in which the OP suggested songs. There were 387 comments (79.4%)

within the posts that requested songs, and 100 comments (20.5%) within the posts that suggested

songs.

Songs, Artists, And Genres Suggested

A total of 438 songs suggestions were made within the posts and 304 individual songs

were identified. The total number of songs suggested and the number of individuals songs

differed because 62 individual songs were suggested more than once (see Table 1). A total of

107 artist suggestions were made within posts and 75 individual artists were identified. The total

number of artist suggestions and the number of individual artists differed because 13 artists were

suggested more than once (see Table 2). A total of 32 genre suggestions were made within posts

and 23 individual genres were identified. The total number of genre suggestions and the number

of individual genres differed because five genres were suggested more than once (see Table 3).

Resources Suggested

A total of 37 resource suggestions were made within posts and 32 individual resources

were identified. The total number of resource suggestions and the number of individual resources

differed because five resources were suggested more than once. Eight types of resources were

identified within posts: website (n = 12), book (n = 9), Facebook video (n = 4), online document

(n = 3), YouTube video (n = 4), image (n = 2), blog post (n = 2), Spotify playlist (n = 1) (see

Table 4).

14

Settings and Populations

The following settings were identified within posts: hospital, hospice, and general or

setting not specified. Within posts that mentioned hospital settings, the following ages groups

were identified: young children / children’s hospital, parents, young / young adults, and general

or age group not specified. Within posts that mentioned hospice settings, the following age

groups were identified: adults / older adults, and age group not specified. Within posts that did

not specify a setting, the following age groups were identified: early childhood / children, teens /

young adults, adults, older adults, and age group not specified. Countries that were mentioned in

the posts included: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic,

Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Tables 1, 2, 3, and 4

indicate settings, age groups, countries, and genres that were associated with the individual

suggestions identified. Individual suggestions were associated with settings, countries, and

genres when these were specified in the suggestions, or when the suggestions were made within

a posts that mentioned those characteristics.

Discussion

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of songs in Spanish by music

therapists according to song suggestions within music therapy Facebook groups. The results

revealed that discussion about songs in Spanish in music therapy has mostly taken place within a

Facebook group that was created for that specific topic: Music in Spanish: Resources for Music

Therapists. It is worth noting that this Facebook group was the only music therapy group

identified by Murakami (2020) to be about a specific language. Results from this study suggest

that music therapists are using social media platforms like Facebook to exchange information,

much like the findings from the study of the use of a close Facebook group by occupational

therapists for collaboration, sharing knowledge, and social support (Sheffield, 2019).

Song suggestions were often accompanied by artist, genre, and resource suggestions.

Regarding song, artist, genre and resource suggestions, results revealed that music therapists are

in fact using and making requests for songs in Spanish to add to their repertoire and are using

these to suggestions for a variety of populations and for clients from a variety of countries. The

songs, artists, and genres that were suggested more than once represented around 20% of

suggestions in each category. This may indicate that most songs, artists, and genres suggested

were not as popular, or that they were appropriate for specific settings and age groups and not for

general use. Posts that requested or suggested songs varied in the amount of specific details they

included about the request or suggestion. This may have resulted in some suggestions being

more generalizable to the Spanish-speaking population with others fitting only specific

populations among Spanish-speaking clients. Resource suggestions show a variety of mostly

online sites. Book suggestions focused hymnals and on children’s songbooks by Jose Luis

Orozco.

Regarding setting and populations, the majority of suggestions within the hospital setting

seemed to be aimed at younger populations, while suggestions for hospice settings and for

general or unspecified settings seemed to focus on older adults. This may be due to the

popularity of children’s songs and of songs that older population would prefer. It may also

indicate that music therapists are working with these age groups more than others. The higher

number of suggestions for older adults in hospice settings seemed to correspond with the Xiaodi

et al. (2015) study which found that hospice patients who received music therapy services in a

large U.S. hospice had a mean age of 79.9 years. Although Knott et al. (2020) suggests a reliable

estimate of the number of music therapists who work in pediatric medical does not exist, an

informal survey of Children’s Hospital Association hospitals conducted by AMTA’s Pediatric

Music Therapy Task Force in 2015(as cited in Knott et al., 2020) found that 56% of surveyed

hospitals offered music therapy services. This suggests that a high number of music therapists

may be working with children in hospital settings, which corresponds with this study’s high

number of suggestions aimed at children in hospital settings. Interestingly, there seemed to be a

greater number of AMTA member survey respondents who worked with mature adults and

seniors than those who worked with children and pre-teens throughout the five years that

correspond with the posts analyzed in this paper (AMTA, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).

Although countries associated with suggestions do not indicate country of origin for that

suggestion or that only clients from those countries prefer those suggestions, it does indicate that

music therapists may have previously used those songs, artists, and genres with clients from

those countries.

Similar to previous research on repertoire for geriatric clients (Cevasco & VanWeelden,

2010, VanWeelden & Cevasco, 2007, 2009), future research may investigate which songs in

Spanish music therapists recommend and use most often in their repertoire and which songs in

39

Spanish are preferred by music therapy clients. Research may also investigate music therapy

student’s knowledge of songs in Spanish and the use of songs in Spanish in music therapy

repertoire lists created and used by internship sites and university programs. Future research may

also investigate differences in music preferences in clients from different Spanish-speaking

countries. Repertoire lists that include songs in Spanish may be useful for both music therapists

and music educators, especially when working with younger populations. Further research is

needed regarding music therapists use of social media platforms like Facebook for sharing

information and collaboration among professionals, and also for obtaining background

information about the repertoire they use.

There were several limitations within this study. First, while this study assumed that

original posters (OPs) and commenters were music therapy professionals and excluded posts that

specified the poster was not a music therapy professional, it is possible that music therapy

students or music therapy professionals who were not board certified music therapists

participated in the posts. Second, some songs may have been counted more than once due to

differences in how the song title was written in the posts. Third, during the collection of data

using the PDF files with previews of posts, this researcher noticed some posts seemed to be out

of order in terms of the date they were published, usually off by a few weeks. This may have

results in some posts being excluded if, for example, a post from 2015 appeared in between posts

from 2014 which were not used in this paper.

Conclusion

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of songs in Spanish by music

therapists according to song suggestions within music therapy Facebook groups. Results

indicated that music therapists serving Spanish-speaking clients have been sharing songs in

Spanish with other music therapy professionals through Facebook groups. The lists of songs,

artists, genres, and resources compiled in this study may be a useful starting point in creating

repertoire lists for music therapy professionals and students serving Spanish-speaking clients.

Future research should investigate music therapists’ current use of songs in Spanish and Spanish

speaking client’s music preferences in order to develop relevant repertoire lists that include

songs in Spanish. Additionally, future research of music therapists’ use of social media platforms

for collaboration and sharing of information is needed.
