2019 Annual International Career & College Counseling (IC3) Conference • 28-29 August 2019 • Mumbai 1

Dear friends,

On behalf of all the IC3 leadership committee members, I would like to warmly welcome you to the fourth Annual IC3 Conference in Mumbai.

There is little doubt that the IC3 phenomenon is now one of the most talked about in our field. The key reason for IC3’s popularity is our sharp focus on bringing counseling to every school and student. All we have really done since our inception in 2016 is to NOT deviate from this goal. In a world where “transaction” is a way of life, IC3 volunteers have shown an unparalleled sense of “service”. They have put aside the competitiveness that has afflicted so much of our planet to demonstrate collaboration that is nourishing so many people.

The solution to a world full of students without career and college counseling is not just to help individual students, but to empower every school to help their students. This is why we remain committed to sensitizing and empowering schools – sensitizing them about their responsibility toward proving guidance (not just teaching Mathematics and English), and empowering them with training and resources for their staff to deliver good guidance for their students.

The emphasis of this year’s conference is inclusion, and you will find it in every aspect of the IC3 Movement. We are reaching out and including every pocket of the world that calls out for help, either through scholarships (to attend the Annual Conference) or an IC3 Regional Forum (which are one-day events, often in areas seldom visited).

Finally, this conference would not be possible without each one of you. Our deepest gratitude to our sponsors, host schools, and content partners who all helped to put together this entire week of events, and especially to you for being here. We hope that you will discover the unique spirit of IC3 and immerse yourself in our culture of service and learning.

Welcome, dear friends.

In gratitude,Warmly,

Ganesh KohliFounding President, IC3 MovementChair, 2019 Annual IC3 Conference

Dr. Divya ChhabraDr. Divya Chhabra, a well-known practitioner of homeopathy (alternative medicine), is equally passionate about teaching. Over the last 25 years, she has taught at seminars organized by practitioners in the U.S., Canada, Russia, Germany, Australia, Spain and Israel, among others. Born to parents with educationist and engineering backgrounds, Dr. Divya was introduced to homeopathy at the age of seven months, when a single dose of a homeopathic remedy prevented a likely surgery. After graduating as a gold medalist from the homeopathic medical college, she obtained her M.D. and has since cured thousands of patients and researched 10 new homeopathic remedies. Her unique method of practice involves the exploration

of the “unconscious” brain process as a controller of disease, as well as of unhealthy behavior patterns. She explains using neuroscience how understanding “automatic brain processes,” and irrational versus rational behavior patterns, has applications in the fields of education, human relations, political conflict and parenting. A tea addict, a classical dancer, an avid reader and a tennis aficionado, Dr. Divya will shed light on how decoding these workings of the automatic brain may help us understand our students and support them in making better career choices.

SESSION 1How Empowering High Schools Can Bring Recruitment as a Sweet Byproduct 8:45am–9:45am • Grand Ballroom 1 2 Most universities engage with high schools in the form of visits to meet with interested students and high school counselors. Of late some schools have been getting 300+ visit requests a year from different universities that are virtually impossible to accommodate. How can universities differentiate themselves in this increasingly saturated market? Can they engage with schools to create stronger relationships and top-of-mind recall for prospective students? The panel will share examples of progressive universities strategically empowering schools through meaningful engagement in the areas of curriculum, administration, research, financial aid and lastly the counseling office. These engagements create sustainable relationships between the high school and the university, and in many cases lead to the sweet byproduct of student recruitment.

• Mr. Ganesh Kohli (Founding President, IC3 Movement and Chair, 2019 Annual IC3 Conference)

Changing Teenager Media Habits and How University Communications Should Evolve1:00pm–2:00pm • Grand Ballroom 3 2

A critical challenge for any higher education institution is to communicate effectively with their prospective students. This has been a complex and evolving challenge as the media habits of 16- to 18-year-olds have changed dramatically. HEIs have to now figure out ways to not only cut through clutter, but be persuasive to get through to a teenager who has a very limited attention span. Should we stick to repetitive email communications in an overloaded inbox, use the “not so cool anymore” Facebook or develop a new Instagram communications strategy? Come hear from a panel of students about the media they use, which messages are more effective and how to stand out in a crowded marketplace. The panel will also share research about changing communication attitudes and behaviors of teenagers worldwide and involve the audience in a discussion.

In the current high-pressure environment of college admission — where missing your freshman enrollment targets can devastate the institution financially; where a senior class’s university acceptances impact who chooses to enroll at the school; where new recruitment methods are employed; and, where we've seen a rise in teen mental health issues — having a code to guide ethical behavior is critical. The recent bribery scandal in the United States has raised even more cause for concern around equity and trust in admission. SESSION 3Reconciling Red States, White Noise & Varsity Blues: What International Counselors Need to Know About American Higher Education Now2:30pm–3:30pm • Grand Ballroom 1 2

In his widely-read "Demographics and the Demand for Higher Education," Nathan D. Grawe outlines a sobering scenario, in which U.S. higher education "faces a looming

demographic storm." Universities in the U.S. are facing other challenges: an admissions scandal that made global news, a perceived student debt crisis, plus plummeting confidence in American institutions, including higher education. Still, the U.S. continues to lead in attracting aspiring international students. A panel of higher education leaders will cut through these complex layers to help us reconcile the conundrums of American higher education. University leaders will engage in a candid discussion about currents impacting American higher education. The conversations will help you convey these complex concepts effectively to international students, parents and educators.

IC3 Institute: Introduction & Admissions2:30pm–3:30pm • Grand Salon 1 & 2 1

To impact 176,000 high schools over the next 15 years, the IC3 Institute was envisioned as an initiative that will empower high schools through access to training and learning. The IC3 Institute offers a one-year certificate program in career and college counseling FREE of cost to full-time high school counselors and teachers. This blended program includes face-to-face learning through four one-week residential programs at progressive Indian universities along with online webinars and mentoring. Many university

and industry professionals have joined this initiative as volunteer faculty and are integral to this effort. While the number of options for students is growing, counseling budgets often do not. This session will provide a framework for counselors to create their own counseling curriculum so that it fits their school. Our panel will share a number of tips and FREE resources to help counselors of all experience levels build their knowledge library, and network.

Management and Humanities: The New Mainstream in Undergraduate Studies2:30pm–3:30pm • Mahogany 2

An implicit hierarchy has crept into education that places a premium on STEM subjects as compared to management or the humanities. Today, there is a powerful case for the acceptance of humanities and commerce -- in educational institutions, industry, society and most importantly in the minds of students -- such that these disciplines are no less than the sciences. The resurgence of humanities and business has student well-being at its core, part of a growing acceptance of different types of intelligence and diverse competencies. It is gaining impetus as the future of work calls for a multiplicity of skills and the emergence of roles that straddle multiple disciplines. An unspoken caste-ism is now making way for an environment in which students of the humanities or commerce are first citizens in education, along with those in the sciences.

Holistic Admissions: A Paradigm Shift2:30pm–3:30pm • Drawing Room 2

The word merit earlier equated with academic excellence is evolving as we move towards a world where machines will work with humans and not for them. The admission process is changing and new elements are getting added as deciding factors. The institutions are moving away from the idea of stress dominated admissions, where decisions revolve around test scores and class ranks to holistic processes. Holistic evaluations are more personal, understand multiple aspects of a student’s personality, where each student is considered unique. Premier institutions are moving to admission processes, which ask students to do more by showing evidence of their interest, creativity, determination and service to others, and evaluating students for their ability to generate implementable insights out of what they know and how quickly they can learn a new skill.

SESSION 4Working Effectively With Parents: Improving School and Parent Relationships 8:30am–9:30am • Grand Ballroom 1 2

Parents are more active than ever in their children’s education but this has been accompanied by a straining of parents' relationships with schools. The media regularly reports about parent protests and occasionally even taking schools to court. Why are we seeing stretched parent-school relationships and how can the counseling office play an active role in making this relationship harmonious? At the core of working effectively with parents is to understand their fears, their attitudes and behaviors towards specific careers. With this customized information the counselor can effectively address parent concerns and overcome their fears through planning, regular interaction, educating them about diverse opportunities for their child and even working with them so they become contributors and enablers to the counseling process.

Access and Equity: An Examination of Standardized Admission Testing 8:30am–9:30am • Grand Ballroom 3 2 The role that standardized tests play in determining who gains entry into universities continues to be a hotly debated topic. Stakeholder anxieties about the role of these tests are high, and in an international context where holistic admission is a difficult concept to grasp and where test security and exam availability issues raise concerns around access and equity, the anxieties seem even higher. As the test-optional movement grows, it seems appropriate to question and reassess the role of standardized testing in admission. The National Association for College Admission Counseling and its international affiliates have recently undertaken efforts to examine the current testing landscape. Join this session to discuss the various aspects of standardized testing, and what this means for the future.

Survival Guide for Getting Through Your First Few Years of Counseling8:30am–9:30am • Grand Salon 1 & 2 1

Are you a new counselor in your first or second year? Are you that person who's been looked at as someone who has all the answers? Are you bursting with ideas you want to implement but not sure where to start? Unsure about who can help and how to build the right network? How to separate business from education? With the plethora of information available online, new counselors face the challenge of where to begin and what to do when. In this

interactive panel you will hear from not only counselors, both experienced and fresh, but also from an academic head and a university representative who will provide different viewpoints on how schools and universities can partner most effectively to set up new counselors and their students to succeed. This is the definitive who, what, when, where and how of counseling in your early years.

New Horizons: Asia as a Choice University Destination!8:30am–9:30am • Grand Salon 3 1

Increasingly, higher education institutions in Asia are appealing to a wider audience, especially those who are contemplating choices in non-traditional destinations. Yet, many discussions may be halted by uncertainties and

"maybes" - questions about learning style, program options, graduate outcomes or even everyday lifestyle might go unanswered. This session is aimed at providing a clearer picture of what the education landscape is like in Asia, using Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore as examples. Participants will hear from three university representatives, and hopefully gain a clearer understanding of how to help students identify and prepare for opportunities in Asia.

How to Support Students in Crisis8:30am–9:30am • Boardroom 1 2

Despite the best planning, sometimes it’s unexpected events that impact a student’s journey to and during university. These events can be external: currency depreciation, or political instability, the U.S. travel ban, a natural disaster. Sometimes, they’re internal: a colleague suddenly leaves, or new administration enters, or there are sudden structural changes in an institution. This is a session

Ethical Practices in International Recruitment & Student Engagement8:30am–9:30am • Drawing Room 2

The turbulent and competitive nature of international student recruitment has led universities to find new and creative ways to recruit international students. Many of these programs and strategies result in greater access for students, but can come coupled with ethical concerns. This session explores the ethical dilemmas related to recruiter counseling of high school students, university engagement with high schools, managing agent relationships and bridge programs, and the high school counselor expectations for universities engaging with their students. Presenters provide examples from their experience and engage the audience in sharing their own thoughts. The session challenges the audience in determining if current codes of ethics are adequate in addressing the complexities of international student recruitment and advising.

Global Knowledge and Talent Flows: An Imbalanced Equation?10:00am–11:00am • Grand Ballroom 3 2

The global movement of postsecondary students is a remarkably unidirectional phenomenon: students from the developing world, or Global South, take their knowledge and talents to the developed world, or the Global North. This is particularly true for countries such as India and China. Do the global flows of students advantage wealthier nations over developing ones? Are these inequities reflected at the student-level where an international experience remains an elite opportunity for a select few? How do we then ensure that the mobility of students and talent is based on principles of access, equity and inclusiveness? The presentation will address these fundamental questions by drawing upon evidence from multiple data sources, while also proposing solutions for programmatic and national-level initiatives.

In June 2017, NACAC issued a call for testing providers to offer more innovative, accessible, and secure admissions testing options for students. More than two years later international students in particular face obstacles related to testing. This session will feature admissions officers and counselors reflecting on the current state of high-stakes testing and whether there’s movement towards alignment with NACAC’s call to action. How can we shift the status quo forward so that we can alleviate some of the continued challenges endemic in traditional testing? Can the emergence of new technologies alleviate some of the continued challenges? The panelists will solicit a discussion

Global Universities Ranking and Impact on the Stakeholders2:00pm–3:00pm • Grand Salon 1 & 2 3

With the globalization of higher education and student mobility, university rankings are generating a great deal of excitement and interest among students, parents, schools, and the government. The global university ranking systems use different methodologies and statistical tools to measure the performance of universities using a wide range of

indicators, which can be confusing for students and parents. What do we know about these rankings? How do we high school counselors and university admission counselors educate and convince parents and students to find the best-fit university for the student without heavily relying on the university ranking alone?

Budgeting for a Counseling Office in School2:00pm–3:00pm • Grand Salon 3 1

The session will focus on conceptualisation, delivery, and budgeting for career counseling services in a school set-up. The emphasis is more on "budgeting" which in turn depends on many factors, like size of the school, expectations out of the program, etc., the explanation of which will be helpful for new/other schools to get an idea of the execution and cost of such a service/program in school.

How to Conduct Effective School Visits: What Do Counselors and Students Want to Know?2:00pm–3:00pm • Boardroom 2 2

Each school nowadays is inundated with university visit requests through the year. However, most university representatives tend to have a typical presentation style which is often similar to the information available on the website. As each region and school is different from another, specific inputs and information is what the school community wants to know: international student experience, common mistakes/patterns of applicants from a region, courses most applied to, data of current students from the region at the university, more statistical information that will aid in decision making. The purpose of the university visit should be attending to customized information needs rather than providing just a basic overview, for the counselors and students that can have a direct bearing on advising students/counseling services in school.
